Chamber Takes the Business Voice to Tallahassee

The 2025 Florida Legislative Session kicked off on March 4. As our elected officials work through their 60-day session, the Manatee Chamber continues to advocate on behalf of our members on the priorities that are important to you.

A few weeks prior to the session kick-off, members of the Chamber's Executive Committee and Legislative Committee headed to Tallahassee to meet with members of the Manatee and Sarasota delegations. Meetings with our Senators, Representatives, and their teams provided an important opportunity for our local business priorities to be heard - with time for that advocacy to make a difference this session.

Our Legislative Committee serves as a key component of our advocacy efforts by sharing insights from diverse industries and capitalizing on relationships with key leaders in the legislative arena. While this committee meets primarily in the fall to develop our State and Federal Business Agenda, the committee can be called back together to discuss a new bill or issue that comes up through the legislative process. Partnerships make our Chamber advocacy stronger and enhance our ability to quickly respond to requests from elected officials, government agencies, and our members.

The Manatee Chamber’s Legislative Committee presented a 2025 Business Agenda to the Chamber's Board of Directors in January, which unanimously approved these priorities. This process is dependent on input from our members on issues that impact the business community, policies that are barriers to continued expansion, and proposals that create efficiencies to support economic growth.

Find the Chamber's Business Agenda online at ManateeChamber.com under

and more.

Our Tallahassee trip always starts with a briefing meeting at the Florida Chamber, which provides a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of proposed legislation, where our Senators and Representatives are heading with policy development,
Senator Jim Boyd and Senator Joe Gruters hosted our Tallahassee team for a wide-ranging discussion.

Legislators Share Insights at Pancakes & Politics

The Chamber's annual Pancakes & Politics Legislative Preview Breakfast featured members of our Manatee and Sarasota legislative delegation sharing predictions for the 60-day Florida legislative session, which kicked off during the first week in March.

Our delegation spent important time talking about their committee assignments, expected topics that will arise in Tallahassee, and answered questions from the sold-out crowd of Chamber members.

Chamber Legislative Committee Chair Casey Welch highlighted Chamber priorities including hurricane recovery, resiliency, water quality, infrastructure, road capacity, workforce development, healthcare, property insurance reform, and workforce housing.

To learn more about the Chamber’s state and federal legislative priorities and to find contact information for elected officials, visit our website at ManateeChamber.com/Advocacy.

education & workforce

Chamber Makes a Big Impact with Project TEACH

On March 13, Manatee Chamber members and volunteers headed back to the classroom, speaking with fourth graders about career opportunities. In total, we reached 153 classrooms across Manatee County in one fantastic morning. One volunteer offered this comment after her time in the classroom: "I get just as much out of it with the kids as my inspiration."

Now in its 32nd year, Project TEACH (Teach Everyone About Career Horizons) is designed to help students begin to think about what they would like to be when they grow up. While students can easily imagine being a doctor, veterinarian, star athlete, video game designer or even a YouTube influencer, there are many career choices right here in our community that they aren’t familiar with including: high-tech manufacturing, skilled trades, business services, law enforcement, business ownership, hospitality, nonprofit management, and so many others. Volunteers shared insight into why they chose their careers and what skills help make them successful.

An important aspect of the program is getting the students to begin thinking about what type of education they would need to land that dream job. Post-secondary education is important and with the great educational options in our region, students do not have to travel far to receive world-class training and find a career. Special thanks to the Manatee Education Foundation for serving as our presenting sponsor once again this year.

A volunteer from Freedom Elementary shared: "Had another amazing morning of Project TEACH! Count me in for next year!!" If you are interested in volunteering for programs like Project TEACH or would like to be more involved with the Chamber’s education and workforce programs, please contact Carey Miller at CareyM@ManateeChamber.com.

Job Shadow Day Matches USF Sarasota Manatee Students with Chamber Member Employers

The Manatee Chamber partnered with the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus for a Student Job Shadow Day in March. This provided the opportunity for local college students to be matched with a business leader to explore "a day in the life" of their possible future industry or occupation.

One-on-one discussions about career pathways, best practices, and other career development-related advice allowed students to ask questions, receive relevant feedback, and grow their network.

Thank you to the following members for hosting a USF student:

• Bealls

• Bradenton Police Department

• Centerstone

• HCA Florida Blake Hospital

• Manatee Memorial Hospital

• Manatee Weight Loss Center

SRQ Media

Job shadow opportunities help build awareness among college students about career opportunities with our members' companies. Making those connections before graduation helps keep more students here in our region.

62ND ANNUAL

Chamber Annual Dinner Honors the Legacy of Business Leadership

Our 62nd Annual Dinner was an evening of special celebration that honored business leaders in the greater Manatee County region and offered a valuable opportunity to connect, share successes, and recognize the significant investment of those who contribute to our community.

Outgoing Chair of the Board Janelle VanHoose, Esposito Law Group, was celebrated for her year of leadership with the Chamber. Stu Henderson, Fawley Bryant Architecture, was welcomed as our 2025 Chair of the Board. Stu has a long history of dedication to our Chamber and will bring his valuable experience and enthusiasm to his tenure as Chair.

Janelle announced and presented a special Chair's Award to honor the tremendous efforts of so many government agencies and non-profits in responding to the 2024 hurricane season. Representing the efforts of thousands of selfless professionals from across our community were key team members from Manatee County Government, City of Bradenton, City of Longboat Key, City of Palmetto, School District of Manatee County, and Center of Anna Maria Island.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 8th Annual Robert P. Bartz Award to Janene Amick. This award honors a community leader who has made an impact in Manatee County that extends well beyond their own company or organization. See page 19 for more on Janene's long legacy of philanthropy and leadership.

We highlighted many accomplishments that the Chamber achieved and offered a preview of how we will serve our members in the coming year in areas like advocacy, small business resources, workforce development, young professionals programming, and more.

Thank you to each of our members – the collective heart of the Manatee Chamber – for supporting the Chamber team, the Board, and our many committees and member volunteers to help make the community in which we live, work, play, and own businesses even stronger.

Janene Amick and family at the Chamber's 62 Annual Dinner.

2024 Chair Janelle VanHoose with husband Jonathan and her parents Patty and Virgil Mills.
Janene Amick, the 8th Annual Robert P. Bartz Award honoree, with Jacki Dezelski, Manatee Chamber President & CEO.
We shared our appreciation for the efforts of so many agencies, non-profits, and individuals who worked tirelessly, and often with personal sacrifice, to help our community with hurricane recovery. The efforts are ongoing in several areas and our business community is grateful.

Thank You to Our Sponsors

8th ANNUAL ROBERT P. BARTZ AWARD

Honoree: Janene Amick

Bob Turner

Janene is described by colleagues as a visionary leader who builds partnerships throughout the community. Many noted that if Janene commits to doing something, she always sees it through. Rarely someone to sit back while others do the hard work, Janene has attained several leadership roles outside of her "day job," which, for anyone in performing arts and theater knows, is a seven day a week, day-and-night job.

Janene is a Past President of Bradenton Kiwanis, member of the MCR Health Board of Directors and a Commissioner for the Bradenton Housing Authority. She is the recipient of many awards and accolades, including the Ed Hunzeker Hospitality Leadership Award, Presidential Award for community volunteer service, Bradenton Sertoma's Service to Mankind Award, the George F. Hixson Fellowship, Conquistador Historical Foundation Appreciation Award, Business Education Partner Award, and BIZ941 2012 People to Watch.

Janene earned the designation of CFRE (Certified FundRaising Executive) from NCCA, holds a Certificate in Non-Profit Management from Winchester Center and her CAP (Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy) designation from The American College of Financial Services. She earned her Executive Education Certificate in Non-Profit Management from Harvard Kennedy School.

Janene and her husband Tim enjoy a blended family of 6 children, three grandchildren, Lukas, Jacob, and Damien (born in March).

She shared this thought on her receipt of the Bartz Award, "I am humbled by the recognition, and grateful for the support of my husband, family, friends, board of directors, and staff that allow me the time to pay forward what I will never be able to pay back. Having known Bob Bartz, I am incredibly proud to accept this award with gratitude for all of those who have mentored, coached, disciplined, redirected, encouraged, and provided for me along my life’s journey."

coffee club

Step Up Suncoast was delighted to host the Manatee Chamber March Coffee Club. We hope you formed a meaningful connection - whether it was with a professional that fills a gap in your network or just one of our hungry, resident turtles!

It’s always a pleasure to educate others about our array of services and programs. Step Up Suncoast is a Community Action Agency serving the residents of Manatee, Sarasota, Hardee, Charlotte, and Desoto counties. Our programming is focused on empowering individuals and families by providing education and support on their path to self-sufficiency. We develop the family unit with our childhood development, parenting education and support, and speech screening programs. Clients can overcome financial hardships and build independence through Agency services, such as housing counseling, utility and housing assistance, free tax assistance, and home weatherization. Step Up Suncoast’s comprehensive programming has made a positive impact in our community since its founding in 1968.

Please spread the word about our services! If you have questions about Step Up Suncoast or are interested in volunteering, please call us at 941-827-2887, email us at info@stepupsuncoast.org, or visit our website at StepUpSuncoast.org.
