ANZAC Day 2023 returned to normal after the previous three years were disrupted through Covid, and was commemorated in Rolleston with a parade from the Community Centre to the Memorial Clock Tower. It was encouraging to see the number of people from our community who participated in the march, including Veterans and RSA members, serving personnel, emergency services, scouts and guides, as well as the general public. The service at the Clock Tower was also well attended, with estimates of over 2,000 attendees!
The event was well organised by the Rolleston Residents’ Association, supported by the new Rolleston RSA. The Selwyn Community Choir and Rolleston Brass played key roles in the parade and service, with a contingent of Rolleston Brass leading the parade down Rolleston Drive, under the able command of Parade Marshall Brian Eckersley Jeff Bland once again did a great job as MC for the service and introduced the guest speakers, including Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg and Rolleston Residents’ Association Chair, Moneel Pratap
Many thanks to Rolleston College for the dissertation at the service and for producing the professional wreaths that were laid by the RSA at both the Burnham Dawn service and the Rolleston service. Another first was that the new RSA hosted the community at the rugby
clubrooms after the service. It was most enlightening to see so many community members attend the get together - this is an integral part in the support of veterans by their own community. Rich Hurt, on behalf of Rolleston RSA.

BLACK FERNS SQUAD
Lucy Jenkins from West Melton has been named in the Black Ferns 2023 Contracted Squad, earlier this week.
Prior to this she was named the Sky Super Rugby Aupiki Champion 2023 Wahine of the Match, voted by commentators and received the Aoraki Award for the Matatū Player of the Year.
“Lucy played a pivotal role in our Championship season and has shown the world what an incredible player she is. We're very lucky to have her in Matatū Blue and congratulate her on her recent Black Fern Squad selection,” commented a spokesperson from the Club.
Lucy has also won five Farah Palmer Cup National Women’s titles over the past six years with Canterbury.
“I have been part of this team since I was sixteen years old. My Christchurch Club team has won the Premier Women’s division, five out of the seven years that I have played” commented Lucy. Lucy is one of thirty four contracted players locked in for the Black Ferns as they set their sights
on building toward the 2025 Rugby World Cup. Lucy secured her first full-time Black Ferns contract, after being a standout in the Sky Super Rugby Aupiki competition and now has the opportunity to further her growth at the next level.
She will train at the Christchurch hub and receive technical, tactical and strength and conditioning programmes.
In addition, each player will have one day a week committed to their
personal development, focussing on the areas of career/education and work, finance and asset protection, character development, mental wellness and other professional rugby obligations and expectations.
“I encourage any female, that is keen to pursue a career in rugby to just show up at a training and make the most of the outstanding environment,” concluded Lucy. We wish Lucy all the best for her future.
ROLLESTON LIONS UPDATE
April was a busy month for the Rolleston Lions, with lots happening, and it looks like May will be just as busy. Members braved the weather and the mud to feed the crowds at the South Island Agricultural Field Days, in Kirwee. Our hot food was in great demand, and we sold out of hot dogs and bacon sandwiches at one stage.
We had a very successful Colour Fun Day in March and are hoping this will not be the final one after all. Members also collected for the annual Blind Low Vision Appeal and raised over $1,100 at New World in one day. Our next appeal is on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th of May, for Aviva, which is the new name for Women’s Refuge. The name was changed as it is not only women who suffer from domestic violence.
We also attended and sold hot dogs and chips at the Relay for Life at Brookside Park, on April
29th, with all proceeds going to cancer support.
Speaking of cancer, there is an exciting nationwide programme being launched this year to do with fighting melanoma. The South Island of New Zealand has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world, and it is not always easy to detect. I know this from personal experience, so you will hear more about what the Lions are doing to help. Watch this space!

ROLLESTON POP-UP MARKET
The Rolleston Pop-Up Market will be held this Sunday at Clearview Primary School!
Hannah Hunter , a local Templeton resident, has been running the Hornby Indoor Market for four years and has created an amazing outlet for small businesses to display and sell their crafts and creations.
The variety is endless and includes jewellery, plants, bath and body products, knitting, home decor and much more, as well as coffee, sweet treats and several food trucks.
The Market has a large following on Facebook and great reviews, making this a must-do weekend attraction held on the third
Saturday of every month in the South Hornby School Hall. Hannah is bringing her market to Rolleston this Sunday with over ninety stalls to browse including several food trucks. Find the event on Facebook for updates and sneak peeks or see the advertisement beside for further details.
SELWYN ART SHOW
The Selwyn Art Show 2023 will be held at the Rolleston Community Centre on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th of May.
The Show will feature more than seventy five artists from all over the Canterbury region, with a large number of local Selwyn artists represented. Exhibits will include sculpture, painting, ceramics printmaking, photography and fibre crafts. This is the 21st annual Art Show held by the Arts Heart Selwyn Central Arts Council, and each year it grows in size, with more artists exhibiting.
Jessica Waters is a local Rolleston artist who is looking forward to displaying her art at the upcoming Show.
“I am super excited to be a part of the upcoming Selwyn Art Show for a second year,” commented Jessica.
“The Show is an empowering event where artists come together to bravely put our hearts on our sleeves, and show the world what we passionately create tucked away in our studios, workshops, or even kitchen tables!”
In high school, Jessica was always drawing and being creative, which naturally flowed onto studying a Bachelor of Design. She worked in the printing and picture framing industries in Christchurch and London respectively. Jessica has also successfully illustrated three children's books and last year won an award at the annual Darfield Artweek exhibition.
“The Selwyn Art Show is such a fantastic opportunity to have many local eyes on my work, as well as people that travel from afar to come to the Show. I'm so
grateful this is a part of my community,” Jessica added. Jessica’s art business Creative Infinity Art will have two panels filled with beautiful limited edition giclee prints and a table of whimsical wonderful originals, including a sprinkle of dried flower goodness.
“It is great, as artists, to be able to fill our display spaces how we wish, giving us a chance to be involved with how best to showcase our own work. The chance to refill gaps, if works sell, is an added bonus,” Jessica concluded.
Art lovers of all ages are invited to come along and be inspired by the creativity on display. Artwork is available for purchase throughout the weekend, and eftpos is available.

One of the tools commonly used by Emergency Services, to locate your address, is house numbers or if on a rural road, the Rapid number. These are two different things, but both are important.
Each rural, residential address should have a Rapid number assigned to it by the District Council. It is a property identification number and is more than just the letterbox number. It should not be confused with a Fonterra, Synlait etc dairy shed number. It should be the number given to a courier, post, or more importantly, Emergency Services should they need to attend your address.
The Rapid number is supposed to be visible at the gateway of the drive leading to the residence on a property. It should be on the left hand side of the gateway attached to a post or most commonly on a blue plastic post in the ground. It will have a 4-digit number in reflective lettering. It should be clear of anything that may obstruct its view, such as long grass, shrubs or structure.
There is a convention for the numbering, so it is important that it is not just taken from the neighbours. The 4 digits are a measured distance from the start point of the road and represent 10’s of metres. Odd numbers are on one side of the road (left), and even numbers on the other, when viewed from the start end. If the odd number is on the right, it means you are travelling towards the start of the road, and the numbers will be getting smaller.
So placing the 4 digit number only on your letterbox can be tricky to locate your address. Especially where letterboxes are in a common place with others, but also, is the number visible from both directions, as you cannot guarantee from which direction help will come. If the 4 digits are not visible, which one is missing, the first or the last? This could lead to confusion as they will indicate more than one possible address.
As we approach winter, remove the old vegetation at your gate so that you are doing everything in advance, to aid a rapid and successful location of your address.

PINK RIBBON MORNING TEA
Local, West Melton Pilates group joins national effort to raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand (BCFNZ).
“We are joining a national effort to support Kiwis affected by breast cancer by hosting a Pink Ribbon Morning Tea. Our Pilates girls will be serving food and refreshments at the West Melton Community Centre on Wednesday, May 31st, from 10am, commented co-organiser, Robyn Moore
“We would love our West Melton village locals to join us for a cuppa. Cash donations accepted at the door or visit the donation page listed below to donate,” concluded Robyn.
Pink Ribbon Breakfast is Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand’s annual campaign to
raise vital funds for breast cancer research, patient support, education and awareness. Each year more than 3,500 people are diagnosed with breast cancer and it is the leading cause of death for New Zealand women under sixty five.
Ah-Leen Rayner , chief executive of Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand said, “We are so grateful to everyone who takes part in the Pink Ribbon Breakfast. Thanks to the generosity of Kiwis up and down the country, we are able to continue our life-saving work.
“The proceeds raised from Pink Ribbon Breakfast will bring us one step closer to our vision of zero deaths from breast cancer.
So, please get involved in whatever way you can - your support will make a real
difference,” Ah-Leen concluded. Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand is a not-for-profit, nongovernment funded organisation that depends on donations and fundraising for its work in breast cancer education and awareness, medical research and training grants, advocacy and supporting Kiwis with breast cancer. AQUARIAN HEALING
The birth of my daughter Sara was extremely painful so I was injected with an epidural. The hospital staff forgot to drain the epidural, so I (Robin Rodgers ) was crippled, unable to walk and in extreme pain twenty four hours a day for three years after the birth. Doctors predicted I would spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair.
I was furious at being left in debilitating pain, which did not respond to whatever painkillers were prescribed. In the Dunedin Hospital Pain Clinic, very strong addictive painkillers were prescribed that made no difference to my level of pain. Others in the Pain Clinic mentioned they had tried Reiki to relieve pain with some success, so I gave it a go. Reiki
helped leading me to become a Reiki Master and studied at least twenty five different healing modalities, Hemaview, muscle testing, meridian lines, detoxification, hypnotherapy, Seichin, Homeopathy and Acupuncture to name a few, leading to me creating, ‘Aquarian Healing’.
Aquarian Healing helped to relieve my pain levels and to walk, unaided, though not for long distances.
I have treated patients with Aquarian Healing for thirty years, paid off my house, travelled and taught Aquarian Healing widely in Europe, Asia, America, England, Norway and Australia.
Aquarian Healing is registered as a healing modality by the New Zealand Government, and I am a
Registered Medical Practitioner here in New Zealand.
I have demonstrated Aquarian Healing in Norway, Austria, Germany, Australia and England. In 2003, I was invited to be a guest speaker at the World Conference of Spiritual, Parapsychological and Medical Healers in Basle, Switzerland. After my demonstration, I received a standing ovation. I have clients in the United States, Australia, England and several throughout New Zealand. Occasionally I also run courses to train parties interested in my modality.

It Can’t Be Raining - My Phone Says Its Sunny!
Ever been guilty of this? You look outside, see the clouds but your phone clearly says its sunny, so therefore you put on your sunny appropriate clothes and freeze all day in the drizzle.
Why are we collectively looking outside of the obvious because technology or the news or FB tells us otherwise?
It can be very useful to check outside sources when making decisions, but ultimately you need to look inside yourself. How do you feel? How does it look to you? Chances are, if you look outside and see it is raining, then it is raining. Making decisions about home ownership, investment property or any other purchase should be based on what you feel you can honestly afford. Can you go without if need be? Can you live without sending your children to boarding school, or the new car? Are you willing to put in the required work to add value to the new home, or the extra hours needed to afford the mortgage? Think about what the sacrifice may mean to you and be honest with yourself. Only you can decide if home ownership will work for you, and when you have made that decision yours, you will achieve your dream.

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE
Last week, the National party released the first tranche of our three-part agricultural policydrawing a very clear line in the sand that, unlike Labour, we are the party that is going to cut the unnecessary red tape and get our farmers back actually farming. As anybody in Canterbury knows, farming is the backbone of New Zealand’s economy, and I am proud that our farmers are the best in the world. Selwyn has one of the fastest-growing GDPs in the country, and that is thanks to the hard work done by our rural sector.
Last year, New Zealand’s agriculture exports totalled $41 billion, or 63 percent of our goods exports. When farmers succeed, New Zealand succeeds. However, since coming to power, Labour has waged war on farmers by burying them under a mountain of unnecessary and unworkable red tape - including introducing or changing more than twenty new or amended regulations that directly affect the ability of business operations in the agricultural sector. For example, ‘wetlands’ are so poorly defined that farmers are having to go to court to determine whether land is a boggy paddock that can be farmed or a protected wetland that can’t. This is adding to the uncertainty and frustration amongst the existing impractical working environment. Farmers end up spending more of their time and money grappling with Labour’s new rules and have less to invest in their farms, risking lower productivity. For example, the Government’s delays in finalising their rules for freshwater farm plans alone are going to cost Canterbury farmers $7 million in consent fees. These costs get
passed on to consumers, so we all end up paying for Labour’s over-regulation.
Labour has used rules and regulations to try to run farms from Wellington. That ends under National.
National’s Getting Back to Farming package will cut the mountain of red tape to help farmers get on with earning the income on which their livelihoods, New Zealand’s economy and New Zealanders’ standard of living, depend. We have been hearing the cries from the sector for the past five years, and we hear you. We want to put the pride and practicality back into farming.
We’ll get Wellington out of farming and ensure farming regulations are fit for purpose and are workable in each area of the sector, rather than imposing a generic set of rules that just don’t work. National will return the management of local issues to local councils. We’ll ensure rural communities have the tools they need to continue to provide New Zealand, and the world, with high-quality, low-carbon food and fibre.
In contrast to Labour’s heavy-handed centralisation, National supports practical environmentalism. We are committed to a carefully balanced approach, integrating both environmental and economic goals. National will deliver a professional, competent regulatory system that targets environmental outcomes without telling farmers how to run their businesses, and while imposing the minimum compliance costs on them. We have also been working closely with the export sector to reinstate live shipments of cattle
offshore at the absolute highest level of animal welfare standards possible. We firmly believe New Zealand farmers are the best in the world, which is why we are backing farmers to uphold the highest standards of animal welfare. As National’s spokesperson for Animal Welfare, I care very deeply for all animals.
Most ships in current use are refurbished container shipsthese are fundamentally unsuitable for live exports and should not, and will not, be allowed to carry livestock under a National Government. I recently paid a visit to the last vessel to leave the Napier port prior to the ban of live exports that comes into effect at the end of the month - a custom-made ship with incredible facilities, good drainage, rubber flooring, air conditioning, sawdust bedding, plenty of food and water reticulation. This is the world-class standard National will regulate for, and we will tolerate nothing less. This is only the start. This country does not need more rules. It needs better regulation. National will be announcing more policies on agricultureand many other things - in the coming weeks and months. And in government, National will deliver results so that all New Zealanders get ahead.

ROLLESTON MEN’S SHED
The Woodwork and Metalwork workshops at the Rolleston Men’s Shed always have projects underway. Besides wood turning and welding, there are also many other items being made or repaired. Currently another batch of laminated breadboards are being made, which will be available for purchasing as a fundraiser for the Shed.
A fence top was recently painted for a Rolleston resident, and a garden seat has been dismantled, repaired, painted, stained and reassembled.
The Shed also repaired a couple of chairs and a garden fertiliser spreader, which needed the axle supports replaced as they had rusted away, for a Rolleston resident.
Bag hangers are being made for schools to replace cast ones that
break. The hangers produced by the Shed have steel rods inserted into long lengths of timber which are then screwed to the walls.
Noise can always be a problem, so the Shed has purchased packs of sound dampeners and installed in the tearoom and workshops.
A good yarn and the morning cuppa are still the most important items.
Feel free to drop by for a yarn!
The Shed, situated at 54 Dynes Road, Rolleston is open Saturday, Monday and Wednesday mornings. Visit our website for further information: rolleston.wordpress.com

TOWN CENTRE UPGRADE
A space to gather, play, relax and enjoy nature has been confirmed as the next stage of development in the Rolleston town centre.
The Council has confirmed construction to start on the development of the reserve green space with City Care set to complete the $1.5 million upgrade to the areas to the north and west of the town centre buildings.
An amphitheatre with capacity for 1,000–1,200 people will be built near the sensory space and youth space, to host public events, along with upgrades to the existing fields.
“The amphitheatre will be an important piece in helping make the town centre a centre for the community,” Councillor Phil Dean commented.
“It will be great to have another gathering space where our community can come to mark big events and commemorations, as well as smaller community events. Gathering is an important part of building community and having another central space to
do that will be really positive for Rolleston,” Phil concluded. The reserve will feature picnic areas, plantings and pathways to allow people to enjoy a quiet break away from the main town centre retail areas.
“The existing children’s playground will be kept and there will also be a continuation of some of the features in the youth zone with small skate areas branching off some of the pathways with street skate features such as steps, rails and
platforms,” Council Major Projects Manager Phillip Millar said.
“It’s an exciting new part of the development, refreshing what was there previously and providing something different again for the town centre. It will be a space to relax, where people can enjoy some green areas, walk, picnic, and play games,” Phillip concluded.
Construction of the green space is due to begin mid-May and is planned to finish in early 2024.

To find the dishes available, or book tickets to an event, visit: selwyn.nz/taste or see advertisement on this page for further details.
Get your glow on with an exclusive VIP experience at the Hororātā Glow Festival, relax at Terrace Downs, or watch Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton mow your lawns while helping the people of Tairawhiti Gisborne with the recovery from Cyclone Gabrielle.
The Selwyn District Council and Waikirikiri Selwyn businesses have joined forces to raise funds for the cyclone hit region with a charity Auction on Friday, May 5th.
The fundraiser will be part of a cocktail evening at Rossendale Winery, with donated items up for Auction and the proceeds going to the Gisborne Mayoral Relief Fund. This evening provides a fantastic opportunity to network with other Selwyn businesses while supporting a great cause.
From horse-trekking and luxury accommodation stays at Lake Coleridge, to a free business promotional photoshoot or taking to the sky with the Canterbury Gliding Club, there will be a range of unique products and experiences on offer for bidders.
Tairawhiti / Gisborne District Mayor Rehette Stoltz will share a video message, updating guests on the flood recovery work.
“It’s been fantastic to see the way Selwyn businesses are getting in behind this event, with more signing up as we go. We’re looking forward to a really fun night and raising money for a great cause. As a community we know first-hand what a huge boost it is to have others supporting us in the long-haul recovery from this disaster. Now it’s our turn, and it’s good to see how generous and creative Selwyn people have been in giving back and helping others,” commented Sam.
The Auction event is the latest in a series of fundraisers throughout the community to support the Tairawhiti Gisborne District, after Selwyn ‘adopted’
the community through the Local Government New Zealand Adopt-a-Community programme, partnering communities to support areas hardest hit by Cyclone Gabrielle.
Tairawhiti Gisborne experienced heavy damage from the cyclone, with a long journey ahead to restore roads, bridges, power, and water infrastructure and to help displaced residents back into their homes. Other recent fundraisers have included a donation drive at Selwyn Sounds, a fire brigade truck pull and Selwyn schools pairing up with their counterparts in Gisborne.

SELWYN TO HUM
Hit folk singer Fraser Ross will be bringing a one night only gig at Te Ara Ātea, as the district fills with music for New Zealand Music Month.
Christchurch-based folk musician Fraser, dubbed the ‘Kiwi Billy Connelly’ for his cheeky banter, has travelled the world and released several EPs and albums, including ‘And Birds Do Sing’, ‘Mongrels’ and ‘Life is Magic, Where is My Rabbit?’
He will be performing on Thursday, May 4th, as part of the events at Selwyn Libraries and at Te Ara Ātea in Rolleston for Te Marama Puoro o
Aotearoa - New Zealand Music Month.
The Music month events will feature performances, lessons and fun activities planned for every member of the family, inviting people to try their hand at playing an instrument, listening to live music and attending special performances.
The theme for this year’s national Music Month is ‘community and collaboration’, which encourages people to think outside the box about what they can do together, support
artists’ journeys as creators, help build a connected and rewarding local music community.
“The community connection is a huge part of music month,” Council Culture, Content and Learning Manager Mat Logan commented.
“New Zealand Music Month is a really fun month in our libraries and we’ve got a good range of events this year.
It’s been really good to see the excitement people have for it with things like the taonga puoro event showcasing traditional Māori instruments already sold out and lots of excitement for other events,” Mat concluded.
Among the events will be local performances every Saturday at all Selwyn libraries, music themed story times and guitar lessons, available every week at the Lincoln and Leeston Libraries for people aged fifteen and over to get started or brush up on the basics.
The lessons will be run by Diego from Music with Diego, and you’ll need to bring your own instrument.

A young woman goes to her doctor complaining of pain.
“Where are you hurting? asks the doctor.
“ I hurt all over,” says the woman. “What do you mean all over? asks the doctor. “Be a little more specific. The woman touches her right knee with her index finger and yells “Ow, that hurts.” Then she touches her left cheek and again yells, “Ouch! That hurts, too.” Then she touches her right earlobe. “Ow, even that hurts,” she cried. The doctor checks her thoughtfully for a moment and tells her his diagnosis, “You have a broken finger”.
