The innovators and heroes of New Zealand’s Arable Industry were recognised at the New Zealand’s Arable Awards on August 4th, at Te Pae, Christchurch. Federated Farmers, the Foundation of Arable Research, United Wheat Growers and the Grain and Seed Trade Association worked together to make the Awards a showcase of the sector’s people and products, recognising, celebrating and rewarding excellence. Finalists in each of the nine categories (Grower of the Year Maize, Grower of the Year Grain, Grower of the Year - Small Seed, Agronomist of the Year, Environmental and Sustainability Award, Emerging Talent Award, Arable Food Champion,
Innovation Award and Arable Farmer of the Year), were selected by independent judges for the 2022 Awards. Local Lauren Beattie was the winner of the Emerging Talent Award. “I was nominated by my employer, Townsend Seeds International Ltd, where I stepped into the role of Research Manager two years ago. We conduct a highly intensive pea trial each year in partnership with American company Crites Seeds Inc., and this year we will be expanding into bean trials also. The trial is full of new genetics and varieties, targeting the process pea industry. We have a purpose built lab where we look at starch and sugar levels in peas; we

believe we are the only company in New Zealand doing this testing on peas,” commented Lauren. “The inaugural Awards at Te Pae were fantastic, bringing around 400 industry people together. TV personality and radio host Hamish McKay was the MC for the night. I was extremely proud to win the Emerging Talent Award and to be recognised amongst so many industry greats. Although it was an individual Award, the work I do wouldn’t happen without the
team at Townsends, and I am very thankful to them for the opportunities I have received in my career,” Lauren concluded. In the United Wheat Growers section, local business Redmond Ag Farming, owned by Kathy Redmond and represented by James Scollay (Darfield) and Scott Redmond (Kirwee), were runners-up in the Premium Milling Wheat section with their Reliante variety. This category was won by ex-local Kyle Gray and his business partner Geoff Maw from Rakaia.
