Coalgate Honey Co is a small family business based in Coalgate, run by Simon and Sarah Aarts. “Beekeeping has been in the family for four generations, so it is nice to carry on the family tradition,” commented Simon. Coalgate Honey Co sells a range of honey and beeswax products which can be found on their website. In June, Apiculture NZ held their annual Conference and Trade Exhibition in Christchurch, at the Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre. This year was Coalgate Honey Co's second year entering the Honey Competition, and like always the Competition was hotly contested with honey entries from all over the country. The popularity of the Honey Competition has grown so much, that now the honey is judged before the Conference to allow them enough time to judge all the entries. “It was again pleasing to be among the businesses that received medals. We received a Silver medal for our raw liquid honey in the liquid/clear honey medium section and a Bronze medal for high country creamed honey, in the creamed honey light section. It was the second year in a row our creamed honey has placed in the top three, which was awesome and shows we are producing a consistently quality product. We would like to thank our landowners who continue to allow us access to their pristine land and the ability
Proud award winner Simon with his children Maddison and Toby. to continually produce quality honey,” Simon concluded. To find out further information about Coalgate Honey Co’s products visit: www.coalgatehoneyco.nz

Although Snowdrop Sunday was postponed until August 14th, the planned day dawned so warm and calm that organisers decided not to close the gates to visitors. A small number enjoyed their brief time around the gardens until the southerly hit early in the afternoon. The rain that has brought despair to many is just what the snowdrops and hellebores love, and have responded accordingly.
