The key to unlocking our dreams

The expansion will include windows to bring natural light into the main and club levels.

Now celebrating our 10th anniversary season as the largest regional theatre in Florida, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre averaged an unparalleled 97 percent capacity for its five produced season shows during the 2011/12 season.

Our shows were so popular that we had many sold-out performances in which late ticket buyers could not get seats – but now we have a solution.

It is with great excitement that we announce an expansion of the Theatre. We will be adding 62 luxurious new seats in the existing second floor space for an upstairs club level. This second floor renovation will include a private entrance with a glass elevator, seating area, lobby, bar and restrooms, all adjacent to the 62 new seats.

We will also be expanding and upgrading the downstairs lobby, increasing restroom facilities and adding a much-needed standalone family/accessible restroom.

Due to the generosity of Roe Green and the Roe Green Foundation, we have raised 70 percent of the funds needed to complete this expansion. Provided we can raise the additional $700,000, we will break ground at the end of the season.

As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, I know we could not have become so successful without the incredible support our community has given us.

Ticket sales cover only 56 percent of what it costs to operate annually; the rest comes from tax-deductible donations made by individuals, area businesses, foundations, corporations, and government agencies. Please help us keep growing so we can ensure that future generations have the opportunity to experience the magic of live theatre for years to come.

We invite you to help us reach an even brighter future. To make a tax-deductible donation and help the Theatre expand, please call the development o ce at 561-972-6124 or 6133.

A Parable

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® for best play, John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt examines the blurry line between reality and gossip, discipline and compassion, truth and doubt. Several of the South Florida actors in our upcoming production re ect on this dichotomy and the important discussions about truth that the show brings up.

“Shanley writes, ‘The beginning of change is the moment of doubt.’ Everything and everybody creates doubt in our lives, if we let it. Shanley believes that our lives are actually enriched by this device, rather than blindly accepting the status quo. In the play, my character nds her whole world ipped upside down, once a small seed of doubt is rooted into her thoughts. It's unnerving how quickly she begins to unravel, and it’s tempting to wish she could just stay locked in her innocence and naivety. I nd it interesting how Sister James, herself, begins to change because of this all-consuming doubt.”

I think doubt is created by active fear. That little spark in the back of our minds that says, ‘I can’t do this’ or ‘I’m not sure.’ The second that (fear) happens, you have to hope that your belief in yourself – or whatever belief mechanism you have put in place – is strong and active enough to hold you on course, and enable you to beat back that fear. A lot of times, you can’t. You can’t beat back that fear, but hopefully can learn from that experience, and are able to have less doubt/fear the next time – and the next time and the next – until fear dissipates into belief.

“What resonates with me is the conviction of each character other than Sister James, (in his or her belief), and the doubt that resides under the surface. I believe most people need conviction of some sort; we all need to believe in something. It gives us purpose. Doubt occurs when we have a loss of that conviction, and we start to question what we believe. One line from my character that stands out is ‘You accept what you’ve got to accept, and work with it.’ This is something we all deal with in everyday life, in one way or another. Non-acceptance of ‘what is’ leads to struggle.”

Here comes Millie!

Hold your breath, Maltz Jupiter Theatre fans – because here comes Thoroughly Modern Millie in a magical musical, set in the roaring twenties when bobbing your hair and rolling your stockings was considered daring. Millie even colors her lips!

A high-spirited musical romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston, Thoroughly Modern Millie (March 5 – 24) tells the story of a small-town girl who travels to New York City to marry for money instead of love. Audiences will relive the roaring 1920s in this Tony Award®-winning musical featuring jazz, thunderous tap dancing, frisky flappers and dashing leading men.

Based on the 1967 film of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie opened on Broadway in April 2002. The production subsequently won six Tony Awards® and five Drama Desk Awards, including the win for Best Musical at both award ceremonies. It also launched the career of actress Sutton Foster (who starred as Millie Dillmount) into Broadway stardom.

The style of the musical is comic pastiche, and its lighthearted humor made it a perfect choice for the Theatre, said producing artistic director Andrew Kato.

Theatrical Productions, the theatre’s 2011-12 season opened with the world premiere of Newsies!, which subsequently opened on Broadway the following spring and earned a Tony Award® nomination for Best Musical.

“I have worked with Paper Mill Playhouse’s producing artistic director, Mark S. Hoebee, for more than 20 years,” Kato said. “It’s thrilling for the Theatre to be partnering with a regional theatre with such an incredible history and reputation for quality.”

“We’ve been celebrating our 10th Anniversary Season all year, but Thoroughly Modern Millie will be the cherry on top! “

“Millie is a big dance musical, and it’s terrifically funny, from beginning to end,” Kato said. “The authors found a fresh approach to the classic story and added buoyancy. We’ve been celebrating our 10th Anniversary Season all year, but Thoroughly Modern Millie will be the cherry on top; it’s impossible not to love it.”

The musical is a co-production with Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey, which has built a solid reputation for excellence in the industry. In an unprecedented partnership with Disney

The production will be directed by Hoebee. The Theatre will also welcome back acclaimed choreographer Denis Jones for the musical, who won the Carbonell Award for Best Choreography in the Theatre’s production of The Boyfriend.

“I’m excited about the opportunity this show is providing for Paper Mill Playhouse to work again with the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. This production represents a new style of co-production for me where the show will begin at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre and then literally grow – in cast size and footprint – when it moves to Paper Mill Playhouse,” Hoebee said. “This relationship allows both theaters to capitalize on the resources that each individual organization provides for the overall good of the show. Michael Schweikardt has come up with some exciting design ideas and I am anxious to see the show come to life – first on stage in Florida, and then again in Millburn, NJ.”

The entire Conservatory team is looking forward to our upcoming production of the time-honored classic Oklahoma This toe-tapping tale not only provides a grand show for our students to be a part of, but many educational opportunities along the way.

The first writing collaboration of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Oklahoma! follows a high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys as they strive for statehood in the Oklahoma territory. The charming cowboy Curly finds romance with Laurey –a winsome farm girl – amid the backdrop of the sweeping plains at the turn of the century. With such beautiful melodies as “Oh what a beautiful morning” and “Out of my dreams,” this delightful story will certainly leave you singing along.

Our Conservatory students will have the opportunity to explore classic Agnes de Mille choreography, and you may even see a few rope tricks! Topping this off is the enrichment gained from examining historical aspects of the storyline: lifestyles of the time period, the journey west and the struggle between homesteading cultures. Such a rich story will enable our students to dive into dramaturgical research and gain a true understanding of how Oklahoma came to be the 46th state to join the union – which in turn, will help the students create full and complete characters on stage.

Show dates: Saturday, May 18 at 7:30pm and Sunday, May 19 at 2:00pm
