“This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for kids to work with theatre professionals and to be a part of the audition process,” said Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s producing artistic director. “We are delighted to be inviting local families to our theatre to take part in five of our shows during the 2014/15 season.”

Participants will learn a dance routine, receive acting lessons and learn to sing as an ensemble. Students are asked to wear dance clothing (no sandals or open-toe shoes).

“We’re looking forward to a fun-filled day where students will experience the process of auditioning for a show,” said Jennifer Sardone-Shiner, the Theatre’s director of marketing.

“Over the past several seasons, hundreds of children have performed in our professional productions because of First Step to Stardom. We look forward to another successful year!”

Director Peter Flynn discusses his artistic approach and collaboration with scenic designer Anne Mundell

Walking through the front door of one’s home after a long time away can be a complex and sometimes ambivalent experience. Even more so, this seems true during the winter holidays: a time of reunion, reflection, and “catching up.”

For the Wyeth Family-the centerpiece of Jon Robin Baitz’ gripping and touching play Other Desert Cities-a lot is revealed in the few hours they all spend together preparing for Christmas. So much so, in fact, that the safety of the family home becomes questionable.

In discussing the play with our set designer, Anne Mundell, it was important to me that there would be spaces in Polly and Lyman Wyeth’s home that are all at once private and public, safe and treacherous, exposed and clandestine. Isn’t this true of any home? One moment we sit in the comfort of a chair taking in our family from the periphery; the next, that same corner becomes the place we’ll never forget when life-altering news is delivered. These are moments, spaces, of revelation. So Anne’s set includes sharp corners, off-to-the-side sitting areas, and one angle of the room that seems to dangle precariously in midair.

Brooke’s revelation that she’s written a book exposing arguably the deepest secret of her family elicits a range of high emotion, almost operatic in size. So Anne and I talked about the size and texture of the Wyeth living room having a vastness and a roughness that one might expect in Wagner’s Ring Cycle.

Jon Robin Baitz sets his play in the luxurious desert (the phrase itself an oxymoron) outside of Los Angeles. Homes built in the heyday of Hollywood’s Golden Era used natural elements like sand, stone and wood as part of their design, so we used these to our advantage to create a space that is at once a home and a fortress. What is this family protecting themselves from, and what are they keeping away from the rest of the world? Why live so remotely in such a wide open space?

It is these architectural paradoxes that both illuminate the central struggle of Mr. Baitz’ play and propel the story forward. Anne’s set becomes an integral tool in the storytelling as this family wrestles with a brutal truth in the safety of their own home. Sound familiar?

The King and I is one of my favorite Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals. The relationship between the imperialist King of Siam and the cultured British schoolteacher is one of the great, unrequited romances in history. Based on the writings of the real Anna Leonowens, who served as governess to the King’s children in the 1860s, this timeless classic has been told by some of our greatest artists in film and theatre.

One of the centerpieces of this musical is the second act ballet, “The Small House of Uncle Thomas” as narrated by the

Each time I have worked with Marcia Milgrom Dodge, we have interpreted our productions for a contemporary audience while remaining true to the script. The King and I provides a great possibility to look at the dynamic relationship between the king and Anna, who both defy their traditional societal roles to create a solid, trusted partnership. It also is an excellent opportunity to look at cultural and historical differences between England (the West) and Thailand (the East) at this particular time in history.

fierce slave girl, Tuptim. Traditionally, this ballet is depicted as original Broadway choreographer Jerome Robbins conceived it; as a traditional-appearing Siamese dance.

When I began to develop my concept for the production, it became clear to me that the ballet was my way into the story. After much research, I decided we should adopt a new approach to the ballet, so I invited puppet designer Eric Wright and set designer Narelle Sissons to join me in creating an exciting new concept for the ballet: presenting it in a Thai shadow puppet theater.

Eric will combine the techniques of Nang Yai (large puppets with visible performers) and (smaller, jointed puppets in a variety of shapes and complexities), and a dozen dancer/puppeteers will bring this to glorious life. Of course, this ancient form of storytelling will impact the entire production’s design, including the costumes by Leon Wiebers and the lighting by Matthew Richards.

You will be getting a brand new production created especially for the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. I couldn’t be more excited!

The costume design must meet these challenges. The juxtaposition of Anna’s huge hoop skirts and corseted body against the much narrower silhouette of Thai dress (which is draped and softer) is very interesting. Both cultures have a history of elegant embroidery and details, but those are used in different ways. So, the costumes are key to the visual story-telling, and I want to use these historical silhouettes, details and embroideries to illuminate both the differences and similarities between the musical’s people and cultures.

THE PAJAMA GAME

The hilarious romantic musical The Pajama Game is a high-energy tale that not only provides a grand show for our students to be a part of, but many educational opportunities along the way.

Written by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and based on the book “7 ½ Cents” by Richard Bissell, this Tony Award-winning musical takes place in the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, where the workers’ demands for a pay increase of 7 ½ cents are being ignored. Enter the handsome new factory superintendent, Sid Sorokin, and the leader of the grievance committee, Babe Williams, and sparks fly.

Featuring such jazzy hits as “Steam Heat,” “Hernando’s Hideaway” and “Hey There,” the energetic dance numbers feature Bob Fosse choreography – a wonderful learning curve for our students.

The large ensemble cast and array of interesting characters offer the educational opportunity to create unique individuals onstage, all working together to tell the story effectively. To help them do so, we are exploring such storyline topics as minimum wage, unions, factory conditions, and living and working in 1950s America. And, let’s not forget the fact that the character Hines is a circus knife-throwing champion! We have a lot to learn!
