To say that this year has been a challenging chapter for the Maltz Jupiter Theatre would be an understatement. How do you forge a path forward in the face of multiple unknowns? As it turns out, one day at a time.
There is much to be said about the hard work that our staff has been able to accomplish. A dozen people shared the workload of what is normally forty, and the Theatre has weathered the storm better than we could have anticipated. I owe my gratitude to our outstanding Board of Directors, whose guidance and unwavering support have ensured that the Theatre always continued to move forward, never losing sight of our primary goal: bringing the experience of live theatre to our audiences. would be remiss if did not also acknowledge our donors and patrons that chose to “Stand By Us” despite not knowing what the future would bring.
In searching for the silver linings to this cloud, we discovered that this “great pause” has afforded us opportunities for self-reflection about ourselves and our organization. We turned a critical eye on ourselves, and explored the weaknesses in our own work. How can we better serve our community? How can we be better advocates for underrepresented voices in our industry? There are many big questions and no simple answers. But, we are putting in the work now, so that we can enter this new chapter of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre with even bigger ambitions.
There is much yet to be done, but if this past year has taught us anything, it’s that great things can be achieved when we all work together.
Thank you!
Andrew KatoOur stage was dark. Our seats were empty. Our offices were packed. But, by no means did the Maltz Jupiter Theatre take a year off. Rather than handing out programs and pouring champagne, the Theatre staff were working to simply keep the Theatre alive in a season without productions.
In the spring of 2020, a few things happened all at once. With cases of COVID-19 rising rapidly in Palm Beach County, we were forced to close our production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying before the first performance. A final run-through of the production was filmed before the entire staff’s workflow shifted to video calls and instant messaging.
of our 40+ staff, with the expectation that full-time furloughed staff would retain medical insurance and be brought back on as we ramped back up to reopening. In the meantime, a small team of 12 would share the load, most doing 2-3 jobs, to keep the Theatre moving forward. All of us working out of a temporary office in Juno Beach while the building was under construction.
Our team also pulled together applications for Paycheck Protection Program loans, which combined with a reduced staff, restricted expenses, the Theatre’s operational savings, and the Endowment distribution, allowed us to sustain ourselves through the fiscal year.
Andrew Kato and the Maltz Jupiter Theatre staff refused to quit in this challenging past year. Andrew and the Theatre staff did nothing but look forward with incredible energy, planning for the exciting 2021-2022 season and making even bigger plans for our now, soon to be fabulous, Maltz Jupiter Theatre. The fact that the Theatre was able to thrive in a season without shows is proof of their hard work and dedication to their craft.
would like to extend a special thank you to our Vice Chair, Robin Smith, and to our Committee Chairs. The work that was undertaken in our various Committees this season has been outstanding. Our Board Members have truly stepped into their roles to support and guide the organization in both large and small ways.
This past year, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre has been given a unique opportunity to turn inwards. Self-reflection and improvement have been a major focus for the staff and the Board, allowing us to better understand the workings of our organization and lay the path for our future. With a new facility and big ideas, the Theatre is now prepared to emerge from this chapter stronger and ready to take on any challenge that the future may hold.
Sensing correctly that COVID-19 would cause an extended disruption for the Theatre, the Board of Directors challenged the staff to capitalize on this downtime to move ahead major building renovations as part of the Believe capital campaign. With the attitude of “turning lemons into lemonade,” the staff hit the ground running. Plans were finalized and budgets were reworked. Kaufman Lynn Construction was selected as the construction manager, and Northstar Management Company was brought in as our owner’s representative. The Theatre staff undertook the monumental task of preparing the building for construction. Lights hanging in the stage tower, filing cabinets in administration, and everything in between needed to be packed and stored before the bulldozers rolled in.
However, any excitement for this monumental step in our capital campaign was tempered by the grim reality of the upcoming 2020/21 season. Without the ability to safely produce in-person performances, how would the Theatre survive?
Self-preservation required a multi-pronged approach. We were forced to furlough the majority
We owe our gratitude to the Endowment Board, who committed to giving the Theatre our full planned 2020/21 distribution ahead of schedule, in the event that market volatility negatively affected the value of the account.
In the spring of 2021, we were able to apply for a Shuttered Venue Operators Grant, which would provide a solid foundation to help us rebuild our organization. The grant award would fund over $400,000 of deferred revenue and over $600,000 of How to Succeed ticket refunds, once the production was officially canceled. We have been able to build on this momentum, laying plans to bring back furloughed staff at the end of the fiscal year and switch our focus onto our Grand Reopening Season.
It was a year of difficult choices and of plans being made, unmade, and remade again and again. With every roadblock, our staff carved a new path and kept the wheels turning, and now we can enter our new year on solid ground.
Our stage was dark. Our seats were empty. Our offices were packed...
During a time when not-for-profit theatres were learning how to “pivot” and reimagine themselves through the pandemic, the Board of Directors of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre used this time to pursue meaningful work in their respective committees. Under the leadership of the Board’s
The Maltz Jupiter Theatre did what many of us did during COVID-19 shutdown: Go virtual!
In an effort to maintain audience engagement during a season without shows, we developed a limited-run web series titled Reel Brief The final product was five episodes that were part variety program, part talk show, part sketch comedy— offering a little bit of everything for everyone. Most notably, Reel Brief featured a recurring segment called “Some Assembly Required” showcasing footage from the Theatre’s expansive renovation.
Program: Reel Brief.MPA
Finance/Audit/Investment Committee:
Chair, Debra A. Elmore
This committee assisted with the oversight of the Theatre’s revised operating budget, the annual audit, multiple government payroll assistance and recovery grants, and the organization’s ongoing investments.
Committee on Directorship and Nominations:
Chair, Sally B. Neff
With the aim of strengthening the Board, this committee revised the Theatre’s bylaws, created a self-evaluation process for Board Members, led recruitment efforts to diversify the Board, and planned social opportunities for Board Members during the upcoming season.
Artistic Advisory Committee:
Chair, Rodger H. Hess
In an effort to familiarize themselves with diverse voices in theatre, this committee and Theatre staff purchased, read, and discussed five plays written by BIPOC playwrights over the course of the season.
Building Advisory Committee:
Chair, Doug Brown
Chair, W. Scott Seeley, and Vice Chair, Robin B. Smith, the Board Committees balanced the Theatre operations in tough economic times with preparing for the promising future that lay ahead at the conclusion of the Theatre’s renovation.
With the complexity of the renovation and new construction of the Theatre’s facilities, this committee advised on the selection for the project’s Construction Manager and the Theatre’s Owner’s Rep. Additionally, they met periodically through the building process to help Theatre staff manage important decisions and approaches to critical objectives.
Equity, Diversity, Inclusion Committee: Chair, Robert Sachs
Guided by professional consultant Barbara Cheives, of Converge & Associates Consulting, this committee worked to begin defining ways that the Maltz Jupiter Theatre can be inclusive to all members of our community, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other underserved populations.
Conservatory Advisory Committee: Chair, Brett Langbert
With the temporary closure of the Goldner Conservatory due to COVID-19, this committee took a critical look at past business practices with the hope of bringing back stronger educational opportunities once the building reopens. The Committee also assisted Theatre leadership in selecting a new Director of Education.
Strategic Planning Committee: Chair, Alceste T. Pappas
As the Theatre’s current 5-year strategic plan nears completion with the building renovation, a new 10-year plan needed to be developed. This committee identified multiple objectives for the Theatre’s growth and efforts to serve our community. In addition, the committee updated the Theatre’s mission, vision, and value statements to better reflect the Theatre’s future goals.
Reel Brief was written, produced, directed, edited, and even performed by the talented team of Maltz Jupiter Theatre staff. For a few days out of the year, the Theatre’s cozy satellite office was transformed into a television studio, complete with a green screen to film most segments.
Engagement with the videos was high, drawing rave reviews from Theatre supporters and driving interaction with our social sites. We were thrilled to be able to bring a little Maltz Jupiter Theatre magic to our friends at home.

SEPTEMBER 2020
JULY 2020
The Green Room Club Level is loaded with office furniture, files and other stored items as the Maltz Jupiter Theatre is prepared for demolition.
Initial ground preparations took place with trees and other landscaping moved or removed. The construction manager, Kaufman Lynn moved their offices into the lobby.
NOVEMBER 2020
The house chamber ceiling is shored up with massive scaffolding. A temporary wall is constructed on the west side of the building in front of the stage to protect the existing theatre from water intrusion.
OCTOBER 2020
AUGUST 2020
Temporary offices were secured in Juno Beach for the twelve remaining staff members who were not furloughed during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre sign was removed from the stage tower.
Seats in the theatre’s audience chamber were moved or removed to make room for the shoring that was needed to stabilize the building.
The existing stage tower at Maltz Jupiter Theatre is stripped of its line sets. As office mascot, Chloe, looks on, Producing Artistic Director/ Chief Executive, Andrew Kato, and Project Manager, Marc Savoy from Kaufman Lynn sign the contract allowing the buildout to commence.
DECEMBER 2020
Demolition of the east side offices as well as the Goldner Conservatory on the north east side of the building begins. On the west side of the building, the rehearsal hall, loading dock and stage door are removed.
Demolition continued on the awning. A large cut was made separating the existing Theatre from the stage tower preparing the area to be torn down. In two days the entire stage tower was excavated and removed. New top soil is put in and the entire area is prepared for ground improvements.
The north side of the building begins to form with walls rising from the foundations. On the west side of the building, the orchestra pit and trap area is created with secant piles. Foundations are poured creating the new foundation of the Second Space.
The massive new porte cochere was framed and concrete “legs” were created. The north side of the building continues to grow.
In the summer of 2020, we faced an uncertain future. Facing a season without productions, we made the difficult decision to furlough almost two thirds of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre staff—reducing a team of 40 full time employees down to 12.
The small team were tasked with the tall order to help ensure the Theatre’s preservation and to keep planning for a future of returning to in-person productions, as far off as that future may have seemed at the time.
As demolition began on the Theatre’s building, the affectionately named “Dirty Dozen” moved the entire Theatre’s operations into a temporary office space about 10 minutes away in Juno Beach. Unique bonds were formed in the socially distanced office space. Departments that rarely intersected in the Theatre’s building now had no choice but to hear each other’s phone calls and water cooler conversations all day long.
Over 300 piles were put into the ground to create stability for the new foundations on the north and west side of the property. Foundations are started on the east side of the building.
APRIL 2021
A large area was excavated where the new orchestra pit and traps will be located digging twenty feet through the water table. After 82 trucks of concrete were poured through the water, the water was drained to reveal a new “basement” foundation.
JUNE 2021
Steel is delivered and is installed forming three floors on the north side that will house the new Second Space and Education Center. The walls of the stage tower begin to rise. The new development office on the east side begin to take shape and the loading dock slab is poured.
The experience reinforced the culture we foster at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is one unified organization that is made up of diverse individuals with their own stories, ideas, and motivations. The responsibility of keeping the Theatre moving forward never rests on just one person’s shoulders. We ask for
With every new curveball, from managing COVID-19 concerns or construction delays, the team stuck together. We celebrated victories together and supported each other to get through the tougher days.
help, we share burdens, and we are never afraid to admit when an idea is just not working.
We have a saying we share with every new employee, volunteer, board member, and visiting artist that walks through our doors: “There are two reasons why you are here. First, you are talented. Second, you are kind.” These two ideas of talent and kindness encompass all that we ask of our employees. All that we can do every day is bring forward our best and be kind to each other.
After a year stuck together in a small office, one thing is undeniably true: the Maltz Jupiter Theatre is not our shows or our events, it’s our people.
Like many other not-for-profit organizations, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre faced immense fundraising hurdles in the 2020/21 season. COVID-19 forced the cancellation of keystone annual fundraising events for the Theatre, such as the gala, the Tony Award®-Winner Benefit Concert, and the Golder Conservatory of Performing Arts Awards Luncheon. In this uncharted territory, the Development Department devised new strategies to meet fundraising goals and created a new giving campaign called “Stand By Us.”
The Stand By Us campaign began as an appeal for patrons to donate their unused tickets from the 2019/20 season back to the Theatre. Namely, the campaign focused on tickets from How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying the Theatre’s final production of 19/20 that was postponed and ultimately cancelled before it ever opened. The value of these donated tickets allowed the Theatre to recover from lost revenue on that production. As the pandemic loomed for many months longer than anticipated, the focus of the Stand By Us campaign expanded to encourage patrons to donate the value of their

2020/21 season subscriptions to the Theatre— while also ensuring they will retain their seats for the 2021/22 season.
We were overwhelmed with the amount of support the Theatre received from our community. Even in the days and weeks that seemed the bleakest, our supporters responded generously to our appeals. From the gifts we received, the Theatre was able to “keep the lights on,” support the Theatre’s twelve employees’ wages, maintain medical benefits for all furloughed employees, and keep the Theatre moving forward towards reopening. To honor those who “stood by us” through this year, donors of $100 or more will be forever listed on a dedicated naming wall in our lobby and will be among the first to be welcomed into our newly renovated facility.
The Development Department surpassed their fundraising goal for 2020/21 by $860,000. We are very thankful to all of our donors who allow us to enrich our community with the performing arts.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the Theatre to halt operations in March 2020. With no knowledge of when the Theatre would be able to reopen and generate revenue, the Theatre entered survival mode. A tough decision was made to furlough most of its staff in July 2020 in order to preserve cash. To take advantage of the forced closure, the Board approved to move forward with a new phase of the Believe renovation.
With the decision to move forward with the buildout, all programmatic activities, including season productions and limited engagements, were postponed to the 2021/22 fiscal year. Additionally, the Goldner Conservatory remained closed. The generous support of our patrons and Board members, funds received through the Payroll Protection Program and the support from our Endowment assisted with our ability to get us through these unprecedented times.
