In Vince Bri a’s paintings, colour does not simply fill a canvas – it performs. Each stroke becomes an act of translation, where emotion, vision and gesture merge to create a visual language uniquely his own. Following years of eventful practice and exhibitions that have taken his paintings, video art and installations to numerous international galleries and museums worldwide - including twice representing Malta at the Venice Biennale (1999 & 2019) – Bri a has, over the last decade, narrowed his artistic focus to painting. This shift marks a return to intimacy, where he continues to consolidate his unique language which fuses drawing and painting into a single act, and developing a mixture of materials that define his distinctive aesthetic.

Bri a’s academic art education in the United Kingdom instilled in him a lifelong commitment to the refinement of a specific act of seeing; shaping a personalised method of encountering and experiencing the world, one that focuses on colour - and its translation in paint - as the primary driver of emotional experience. This creative direction began with his early interest in impressionist painters’ interpretations of light and form, and was later refined through academic research into the intersection of the art and science of vision, as mediated by the artist’s physical gesture and the materiality of paint.

In a contemporary painting language, Bri a’s work investigates painting as a perpetual state of becoming, articulated through the intricate interweaving of visual perception, paint materiality, and the performance of hand and bodily gestures. Within his studio practice, he examines how paint and related materials, through deliberate intervention on the work’s surface, become the central premise of the artwork itself.

Bri a’s paintings operate at the crucial junction of matter and form, where the activity of working, erasing, reworking and constantly modifying materials is understood not as an imposition of theme or meaning but as movement through matter itself. This approach challenges more conventional notions and historical applications of matter in painting traditions, and positions the painting process and its result as the actual artwork, not signifying anything external to itself.

This organic creative process draws equally from subconscious visual and cultural influences and a deeply personal orientation toward abstraction. His cyclical method - always beginning with and returning to the medium - values material properties while remaining open to chance occurrences and interventions that emerge during creation.

Finally, after completing each piece, the artist purposefully adds complexity through playful metalinguistic titles that invite viewers to recognise specific visual, aesthetic, and historical influences in his process, further enriching the interpretive experience.

These waterproof chronographsthe first to be made by Patek - have long captivated the imagination of collectors, and this example was no exception.

The final member of this auctions Fab Four? A pink gold Patek Philippe Ref. 2524/1 Minute Repeater with a Gübelin dial - one of only two known in this metal, and the only one to have been ‘souble-signed’. This wristwatch had been out of the public eye since the legendary 1989 ‘Art of Patek Philippe’ auction, and it came back with a bang - or rather, a chime - selling for $1.6 million.

As the sale kept ticking along, there were a number of other Patek Philippe highlights with no fewer than seven other Patek minute repeaters, a white gold ‘Padellone’ Ref. 3448, and a sapphire-studded platinum Nautilus all sparking heated interest. A cloisonné enamel World Time and a Ti any & Co. minute repeater pocket watch - each a tribute to timeless artistry.

A GLEAM OF HISTORY: THE ENDURING ALLURE OF MALTESE SILVER

There are few artistic legacies as layered as Maltese silver from the era of the Knights of St. John. For collectors and connoisseurs, they hold a rare, enduring appeal where craftsmanship, culture, and political power merge into tangible brilliance. As an auctioneer, I’ve had the privilege of handling pieces that are far more than precious metal, being relics of ceremony, status, and nationhood.

thE silvErsmiths of thE ordEr

From 1530 to 1798, Malta was ruled by the Knights Hospitaller, transforming the island into a bastion of European nobility and religious devotion. Silverwork became part of its physical expression.

Maltese silversmiths during this period developed a Baroque style, tempered with Mediterranean restraint. Their output was largely ecclesiastical chalices, monstrances, sanctuary lamps, reliquaries, and so on, but domestic silver also flourished, including cutlery, trays, and elegant tea services for noble households.

Among the most prominent silversmiths were Pietro Paolo Troisi (1686–1743) an engraver, medallist, and silversmith to the Order. His sanctuary lamps for Senglea (1719) and Valletta (1733), and a reliquary for Naxxar (1732), remain iconic. Annetto Pullicino & Giovanni Andrea Troisi, co-created the silver capsule at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina. Michele Angelo Farrugia, known for his refined late-18th century pieces, were commissioned under Grand Master Oakes and Pietro Carmine Kalfa’s “K” mark - is one of the most recognisable marks among collectors.

Many of their creations along with other notable silversmiths’ works remain in situ at St. John’s Co-Cathedral, the Mdina Cathedral, and in parish churches across Malta. Others, once inherited, displaced, or looted, now resurface at auctions - sparking intense collector interest.

silvEr And sovErEiGnty: PoWEr cAst in mEtAl Maltese silver cannot be separated from the politics that shaped it. The Knights ruled not as caretakers, but as sovereign princes. Each Grand Master functioned as a head of state, and silver commissions became symbols of faith, control, and stature.

Rulers like António Manoel de Vilhena and Manuel Pinto da Fonseca led a cultural golden age. Vilhena emphasised refinement and architecture; Pinto favoured symbolism and patronage. Both invested heavily in silver, commissioning grand works bearing their coats of arms.

The Order’s internal divisions often fuelled rivalry. Regional chapters such as Italy, Aragon, and France competed through lavish silver commissions for their individual chapels and alters enriching Malta’s silver legacy.

Silver thus became devotional and diplomatic; a votive o ering, a gesture of favour, a mark of ambition. Even following the French seizure of Malta in 1798 looting treasures and dismantling the Order - many pieces survived, hidden or spirited abroad. Today, as these pieces reemerge, their hallmarks reveal the political and spiritual drama of their era.

thE British PEriod And BEyond

Though the golden age of silver ended with the Knights, fine pieces continued into the British period. Makers like Aloisio Troisi, Paulo Camilleri, and Enrico Critien produced notable works from the early 19th century. Their works - distinct yet echoing earlier craftsmanshipare increasingly valued for their historical continuity.

mAltEsE furniturE: A silEnt tEstAmEnt Malta also boasts a rich heritage in Baroque furniture. Pieces from the 17th and 18th centuries reflect the same refined aesthetic tastes. Though rarer than silver, surviving examples are highly sought after and seldom appear at auction.

lost trEAsurEs, frAGmEntEd lEGAcy

The French occupation of 1798, and British colonial rule, saw widespread looting and export of Maltese artworks. Many were melted down, sold abroad, or vanished into private hands.

This cultural loss has only heightened the value of surviving pieces. Each work that resurfaces is a piece of Malta’s story waiting to be retold.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the formation of the Maltese Association of the Sovereign Order of Malta – the local representation of the ancient Hospitaller Order founded by the Blessed Gerard. This is complimented by the illustrious history we are so proud of, most notably the Great Siege of 1565, when de Valette’s valiant defence, in collaboration with the Maltese militia, heroically led his knights to withstand the onslaught of a vastly superior Ottoman invader.

Behind this rich narrative lies a vibrant, compassionate and highly active modern Order, dedicated to St. John of Jerusalem, but universally known as the Order of Malta.
