Comino, the smallest of the three islands, is classified as a Natura 2000 site; the island is scattered with wild herbs and flowers, and its rugged cli s provide a safe resting spot for migratory birds while its waters protect an abundance of marine life, making it popular among divers. Currently, Comino has no year-round inhabitants, but the only hotel located on the untouched island, which caters to the many seasonal guests every summer, is set to be re-developed into an exclusive five-star hotel with luxury serviced bungalows.

Each island is a treasure trove of history, culture and tradition, with Malta and Gozo both housing UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In fact, Malta is home to three sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. “It tastes like the land from which it was born, derived from a sense of truth, intent and loving attention. A wine that, in its harmony and roughness, talks about the land that it comes from and, therefore, also about me. That’s why I think a natural wine is also a human wine, besides being a good wine,” she says.

This could not apply more to Il Frappato. A wine that stems from Arianna’s dream as a girl to make wine that knows the land that she lovingly works, the air she breathes, a wine that knows her thoughts. It is bitter, bloody and elegant, like Vittoria and the Iblei Mountains. In 1973, with their eye on the future and having long-standing and established relationships with several international suppliers, Roger Satariano and Son acquired large premises in Gwardamangia serving as their new warehouse facility. Here they continued to expand their range of services and products and in 1980 they moved their showrooms out of Valletta and Floriana to a larger, more modern showroom in Valley Road, Birkirkara.

Malta’s leading kitchen, home and bathroom supplier is proudly celebrating their 125th anniversary. Having built a reputation as the brand of choice that stands for the aspirations of a modern Malta and the enjoyment of the highest possible quality of life, Satariano, synonymous with luxury and prestige, comes from humble beginnings.

Steeped in history and legacy - the roots of the Satariano brand can be traced back to 1898 when Roger Satariano started importing and selling sanitary ware and other building materials in his position as a regional sales manager for a manufacturing and exporting firm from Birmingham in the United Kingdom. Simultaneously his son George launched his own import company.

Before long, father and son merged firms to become Satariano & Son, setting up shop in the capital city of Valletta. The duo quickly built a reputation for themselves as the premier provider of high-quality bathroom fixtures, and by 1934 George Satariano had brokered an exclusivity deal with Ideal Standard, paving the way for expansion and diversification.

As the firm evolved, the brand shifted its focus from commission agents and wholesalers to direct retailers, acquiring their first showroom adjacent to their o ce in Valletta. With the brand’s growing popularity Roger Satariano & Son expanded their catalogue of bathroom fixtures & fittings to include tiles and building materials, opening a second showroom in Floriana in 1957.

On the 8th of September 1964, George Satariano passed away, and his five children James, Anna, David, Ray and Joe successfully kept the business going, with son James Satariano taking the helm as Chairman and Managing Director.

At the time, a housing and hotel construction boom began to take shape and over the next six decades, Roger Satariano & Son Ltd worked on almost every major construction project with well-known developers on the Maltese Islands, including Tumas Group, Corinthia Group, Eden Group, Midi Tigné Point and MSV Mafre. The company’s success in this business sector is principally attributable to their competitiveness, experience and the quality they deliver.

Roger Satariano & Son continued to expand and diversify their o erings, adding air-conditioners, solar water heating units and plumbing supplies to their range of products. In March 1985 the company launched top manufactured Hepworth Plumbing products. This simple push-fit plumbing system revolutionised plumbing installation in Malta and throughout the years, over 18 million Hep2O fittings and more than 20 million metres of piping have been installed in commercial premises and households across the Maltese islands.

Today Roger Satariano & Son - fondly referred to as Satariano, is one of the most recognized brands in Malta, known for its commitment to quality, innovation, and customer service. Art has always been a medium of expression, a way to convey emotions and ideas that words cannot. It is a reflection of our society, culture, and history. It is with this in mind that the Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) celebrates the beauty of art and its significance in our lives.

Nestled within the historic landscape of the Floriana lines, at the former Ospizio and Ritirata sites, overlooking the stunning seascape of Marsamxett Harbour, the Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) will firmly establish itself as one of Malta’s premier art hubs, when it opens in 2024. Its mission is to support and promote contemporary art and culture through a variety of exhibitions, events, and educational programs.

The MICAS footprint, an array of spectacular 17th and 18th century military architecture built by the Knights of St John boasts a rich history. The site’s narrative is multi-layered, stemming from its original purpose as a war machine and its subsequent transformation hosting the first hospice for the care of the elderly and the infirm, and a military store during British colonial rule. In 2018, the Government of Malta earmarked the site for the development of a new cultural infrastructure for Malta; the Malta International Contemporary Art Space.

MICAS is intended as a destination for art enthusiasts and cultural connoisseurs alike and has already kicked o its artistic programme collaborating with cutting edge artists such as Pierre Huyghe as well as Phyllyda Barlow, Conrad Shawcross and Sean Sculley amongst others. Presently, MICAS is showcasing captivating exhibits in various sites by Spanish artist Cristina Iglesias, American artist Michele Oka Doner and Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone that o er visitors a unique and immersive experience.

Cristina Iglesias, explores the interplay between nature and architecture and her featured exhibit Sea Cave (Entrance), is an installation with elements of water and indigenous flora hinting at a liminal threshold, the potential entrance to a cave, where the bronze sculptural form delves downwards to expose stratified layers and an imagined pitted and hollowed geology.

Michele Oka Doner’s The Palm Goddess for Malta embraces the figurative tradition of the ancient past. The sculpture also draws inspiration from the monumental leaves of Phoenix dactylifera, a palm that inhabits the Maltese archipelago.

MICAS is committed to promoting contemporary art and culture in Malta. “A dedicated space for contemporary art is hugely important for Malta, but the key factor is that it needs to be alive. Furthermore, it needs to engage with all age groups, so they feel there is something for them and that it is a place they can relate to and enjoy coming to frequently,” continues Sultana.

Whilst Ugo Rondinone’s The Radiant is a stone figure encompassing the most archetypal representation of the human form, an elemental symbol of the human spirit, connected to the earth yet mythic in the imagination.

MICAS, currently in the process of renovating and restoring the Floriana site - is set to open in 2024. The new build which roofs over the Ritirata ditch, integrating the iconic skewed arch known as the Arco Barbara, is being reimagined by IPO Studio, a Florence-based architecture firm specialising in civic architecture.

MICAS aims to positively energise Malta’s cultural ecology and become a proactive player in the contemporary art world. “It is with this in mind that MICAS will be a state-of-the-art facility designed to o er maximum flexibility and adaptability featuring a sculpture garden and a variety of galleries and modern spaces for exhibitions and installations by local and international contemporary artists,” says world renowned Interior Designer and Ambassador of Culture for Malta, Francis Sultana.

MICAS will incorporate 1,500 m2 of gallery space and a further 5,450m2 of outdoor spaces and is led by a proactive board headed by Phyllis Muscat as chair.

“Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a curious traveller, or simply looking to expand your horizons, MICAS will o er a range of exhibitions, educational programs, and initiatives that are sure to captivate and inspire,” concludes Sultana.

A RETROSPECTIVE ON SOTHEBY’S RECORD-BREAKING 2022 WATCH SALES.

Overall, 2022 was a remarkable year for the Sotheby’s Watches department in Asia, with a total of nine live or online sales, that captivated the watch world’s attention. These included a white glove sale in April 2022 of The Nevadian Collector collection, an exquisite curation of 40 exceptional timepieces from the golden era of horological development, between the 1940s and 1980s, predominantly consisting of Patek Philippe timepieces.

The collection’s highlight was a rare and significant pink gold perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch crafted by the distinguished Italian retailer Gobbi Milano in 1957, featuring a unique retailer signature on the dial. The only known pink gold second series of its kind, it sold for HKD 60,265,000.

Other notable pieces from the sale included a rare Patek Philippe yellow gold perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch, with luminous baton indexes and hands. The only known luminous example with moon phases, dating back to 1958, it sold for HKD 23,365,000. Meanwhile, a standout Patek Philippe, a pink gold perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch with moon phases and a pink dial, sold for HKD 22,760,000.

In early 2022, Sotheby’s marked ten years since the passing of the renowned watch designer Gérald Genta by opening his personal archive for the first time in the Gérald Genta: Icon of Time auction. The sale featured both his most famous timepieces and never-before-seen private commissions, along with a selection of innovative and unique watch designs. In this pioneering marrying of technology and historic documentation, the physical designs were paired with individual NFT equivalents, which included fascinating unseen archive material and multimedia biographical content.

The successful 2022 watch sales achieved a total of HKD 605,524,910 - a testament to the extraordinary response from clients and, according to Sotheby’s UK Watches specialist Tom Heap, a reflection of the watch world’s stellar 2022 performance. “We have been incredibly fortunate to have secured some exceptional watches that have, in turn, achieved exceptional results,” he commented.

A notary will prepare the documents for the Promise of Sale. The notary will also inspect all of the paperwork and verify the title while preparing a final deed of sale.

Your agent will negotiate the price and conditions with the seller on your behalf. Once both parties agree, a promise of Sale, also known in Maltese as a “Konvenju”, will be signed at the Notary’s o ce. Purchasers will be subject to a due diligence and compliance checks.

In order to apply for finance, you will need to present evidence of income in the form of your last 3 months’ payslips and a FS3 form – in the case of self-employed individuals you will need to submit your last 2 income tax returns, Maltese identity card, residence card, the preliminary agreement or deed of purchase of the property, disclosure of any current loans and details pertaining to that and a Bank Appointed Architect’s valuation report. The bank may ask for further documentation or information.

• Pay thE DEPosit

Upon signing the promise of sale and qualifying for finance, you will be required to pay the deposit for the property – this is usually 10% of the purchase price. In addition, the buyer will also be required to pay 1% of the purchase price as provisional stamp duty on the property.

• sign thE Final DEED oF salE

A final deed of sale will be signed at the Notary’s o ce, upon which you will be required to pay all outstanding funds for the purchase of the property, the Notary fees and the remaining 4% of the Stamp Duty fees associated with the purchase of a property. If there is a bank loan involved, then the final deed will be signed at the Bank’s o ce. The real estate agency fees are paid by the seller.
