MAKING BETTER RISKY DECISIONS ABOUT FROST Peter Hayman, SARDI Making better decisions about frost is an ongoing challenge for grain growers. Zoning paddocks that are frost prone and lining up salvage options such as hay or grazing are considered best practice frost management. Best practice is a set of rules that growers adapt to their enterprise and largely follow each year. Another best practice rule is to sow crop varieties in the recommended sowing window. Sometimes there is an early sowing opportunity and growers in frost prone areas have to decide whether to deviate from best practice and take the risk of sowing a spring wheat a bit earlier than recommended. Sowing decisions in frost prone regions can be tricky. Ideally, the crop should flower after the last damaging frost and before the onset of heat and water stress. Getting the crop in early and flowering before spring becomes too dry and hot has proven to be good agronomy. Some growers have said they don’t mind seeing very minor frost damage as this indicates that they were pushing up against just the right amount of frost risk for that year. The problem is that the date of light frost damage in one year can be major frost damage in other years. As we don’t have a crystal ball and there aren’t 100% frost tolerant varieties (yet), all frost decisions have some degree of risk. The most profitable choices Continued.... will only be known after the season.
WELCOME Our first issue for 2023 starts with conditions that have been generally dry across the region and talk of an El Niño. Seeding has progressed albeit slowly for some. So what can we expect with frost this year? In this issue, we continue our regular catch-up with Dr. Peter Hayman to chat about the season and the decisions made on farm when it comes to frost how can we make these decision less risky? And if you're still on the tractor seeding, spraying, spreading or rolling tune in to the Better Frost Decisions Podcast where we chat to Peter Hayman, Max Bloomfield from FAR Australian and CSIRO's Bonnie Flohr. Next issue August 2023.
