Australia Day 2022 - Maleny It is a day we celebrate our nation, its achievements and most of all, its people. Australia Day is one of those days that the celebrations do not please everyone. The marking of the 26th January is an important date in Australia's history. It was on the 26 January 1788 that the First Fleet landed in Sydney Cove to set up a penal colony for English prisoners. Irrespective of your thoughts. Australia Day is about acknowledging and celebrating the contribution that every Australian person makes to our contemporary and dynamic nation. It is to many a day to celebrate the freedom we have by living in Australia. It is also one day when we as Australians believe that the day should be a time to recognise and celebrate the country's cultural diversity and to acknowledge what we love about being Australian January 26th also marks a day where some Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples have mixed feelings about celebrating this day—some consider it a day of mourning, and others use the day to mark the survival of their ongoing traditions and cultures. Irrespective of your thoughts, Australia Day should be a day where we all foster constructive, respectful discussion about the contributions of all Australians past, present and future as well as where we want the
Australian community to be for the next generation. By only remembering the past will not lead to a better future for all. On January 26th right cross Australia, thousands of people who hav immigrated to Australia from other countries become Australian citizens each year at special Australian Citizenship Day ceremonies. In Maleny the Sunshine Coast Council will facilitate a ag raising and a Citizenship Ceremony followed by a celebration that takes on an even more special meaning for those new Australian citizens who, hopefully, will appreciate the privilege of becoming Australian on this day of great national pride. Normally, there is an Australia Day Expo at the Maleny Show-grounds, hosted by the Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club where a wide range of community groups invite you, not only to come out to play with your family, but learn about the community organisations that provide services and support to our community. Unfortunately, this year the Expo has been cancelled because of the threat from the growing number of people with COVID related illnesses.
