Maleny Author Lisa Plucknett authors another risque anthology

On Saturday, December 13 Maleny author the fabulously naughty nonagearian Lisa Plucknett and about 100 of her friends launched another of her hilarious anthologys titled “Out of the Bath – but Up the Pole .” This is her sixth book of poems and short stories. One pertinent poem is titled “Re ections at 91” and those memories must be similar to many other people from the same era.

There was a time when the perfect “housewife” would have been most happy to have a Handi Pumpless ‘shellite’ spirit iron to help keep those clothes looking good.

There are a number of schools in the U nited States where the Christmas jingle, “Jingle Bells” is not allowed to be sung. The reason being: The song “Jingle Bells” debuted on September 15, 1857, at a blackface minstrel show in Boston. James Lord Pierpont wrote it for a racist minstrel troupe. It was alleged that enslaved people were forced to wear jingle bells on iron collars to prevent escape.

Today, we want things to get more and more simple and easy to use so no longer will the Handi Pumpless ‘shellite’ spirit iron “cut the mustard”.

Social Media shutout for under 16!

I’ve long fought for stronger protections for our kids, especially online. Yesterday’s launch of the under-16 social media ban is a signi cant step forward, following the work of the Protecting the Age of Innocence report, which I was proud to help deliver.

Parents want this to succeed. So do I. ’ .

Kids under 16 can no longer have accounts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, X, YouTube, and other major platforms, yet key questions remain. How will age veri cation work? Will older teens be asked to upload ID? Why were parents left in the dark until the last minute?

The Government’s own trial showed large error rates, and young people are already getting around the system by shifting to platforms that aren’t included. It’s becoming a real game of whack-a-mole.

We all want our kids safe from cyberbullying, predatory behaviour, and harmful content. Labor needs to get this right. The Coalition will keep pushing for a clear plan so families have con dence this change will truly protect their children.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions Why do the Australian Taxpayers need to pay so much in taxes?

Successive Australian governments have often been criticised for a laissez-faire attitude toward public spending, leading to signi cant waste of taxpayers’ hard-earned money.

While Australia bene ts from a relatively stable economy and strong revenue base, this very stability can sometimes encourage complacency. Instead of approaching public funds with disciplined stewardship, governments at local, state and federal levels have, at times, allowed inef ciencies, duplication, and poorly scrutinised projects to ourish.

One of the most persistent problems is the tendency to announce large, headline-grabbing initiatives without adequate planning or cost-bene t analysis. Infrastructure blowouts, technology system failures, abandoned programs, and consultancy spending spikes are common examples.

When projects are launched for political gain rather than long-term public value, taxpayers inevitably foot the bill for overruns, delays, and revisions. This is not a matter of one political party over another; waste has appeared across all sides of government, revealing a systemic cultural issue rather than an ideological one.

Truthful tells that when he went to church last week to celebrate the wedding of his niece the pastor asked if anyone had anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom, it was their time to stand up and talk, or forever hold their peace.

Another source of waste stems from bureaucratic layering.

Multiple departments, sub-agencies, and committees often handle overlapping responsibilities. Instead of streamlining these structures, governments sometimes allow them to expand, creating unnecessary administrative costs. In many cases, reviews and audits warn of inefficiencies, but their findings are not implemented with urgency—if implemented at all.

A laissez-faire approach to scal discipline also overlooks opportunities to modernise public services. Outdated systems remain in place for years because governments fail to prioritise strategic investment or rigorous oversight. As a result, Australians pay more for services that could have been delivered more effectively and at a lower cost.

Taxpayers expect governments to treat public money with the same care that households treat their own budgets.

When governments fail to do so, trust erodes.

Stevie The Brave Little Fire Dog from Maleny

I

t was just a few days before Christmas. The Australian bush was hot and tinder-dry. Hot, dry winds brushed the countryside.

It was Australian countryside, where the gum trees swayed like old dancers and the red earth smelled of dust and sunshine. The Maleny Volunteer Fire Brigade was preparing for what looked like a long, scorching day. The sky shimmered with heat, cicadas hummed like a thousand rattling engines, and a faint smoky haze whispered of trouble somewhere out in the bush.

At the centre of it all—wagging his tail with military seriousness— stood the brigade’s smallest, furriest, and most determined member: Stevie, a tan dachshund with a reman’s coat tailored specially for his long, low body and a bright red helmet that always sat just a little crooked.

Stevie lived for re season. He lived for the thrill of the chase, the rush of the missions, and the privilege of riding proudly with the brigade. More importantly, he had a nose sharper than a chainsaw blade and could sniff out a are-up faster than any human eye could spot one.

And today, that nose twitched.

Captain Julian , a broad-shouldered veteran with a singed beard and a talent for undercooked barbecues, noticed Stevie stiffen. “Uh-oh,” he muttered. “Stanley’s caught a whiff. That’s never good.”

Moments later, the radio crackled with urgency.

“Bush re spotted north ridge, Booroobin— ames moving fast.”

Julian nodded. “Righto, crew! Mount up! Stevie, you’re with us!”

Stevie barked sharply—a sound Captain Julian was certain meant, Mate, I was already on the truck before you even knew there was a re.

Sure enough, when the crew reached the bright yellow re truck, Stevie was already perched on the back platform, ears opping in the breeze—even without the truck moving yet.

The crew scrambled aboard, and with a roar of the engine, they shot off to nd the dusty track where the re was burning. As they roared along, they left a cloud of dust behind them and a determined dachshund leading the charge.

Racing the Flames As they approached the north ridge, the world shifted from hot and dry to smoky and dangerous. Flames licked at the sides of brittle grasses, and tall eucalyptus trees stood like tinderboxes waiting to explode.

Up in its branches were two koalas—one older, mellow, and half-asleep, and another young joey clinging nervously to the trunk. The ames were creeping toward the base of the tree.

“Oh no,” Chris gasped. “We’ve got a koala emergency!”

“Right!” Julian shouted. “Protect the tree!”

The re roared, a beast unleashed.

Stevie’s nose twitched again. He scrambled to the edge of the truck, barking wildly.

“Stevie has got something!” shouted Ranger Chris from the passenger seat.

Julian slammed the brakes. “Alright, boy, show us!”

Stevie leapt off the truck—well, plopped off with the grace typical of a long-bodied dog—and tore toward a patch of scrub just metres away. The re ghters hurried behind him and found exactly what he’d detected: a small are-up hidden behind a fallen log, one that could have quickly spread toward the ridge.

“Hose up!” Julian shouted.

The re ghters formed a line, spraying water around the base while Stevie stood guard, barking in what sounded very much like instructions: Left! No, your other left! Watch that ember! For heaven’s sake, someone check behind the stump!

After a tense few minutes, the area around the tree was smothered. The koalas blinked down sleepily, clueless to how close they’d come to disaster.

“That’s two saves in ten minutes,” Chris told Stevie.

“At this rate, you’ll be captain by nightfall.”

Stevie wagged his tail modestly—but inside, he was certain he already was the real captain.

Chaos and Courage The day went on in a blur of smoke, heat, and frantic activity. Stevie dashed back and forth across the re ground like a tiny but

But his work was far from done.

“Stevie’s running this whole operation,” one re ghter panted.

“I’m not even mad,” Julian said. “I’d be lost without the little bloke.”

As the sun dipped low, the re still raged, but it was nally losing its strength. The crew—sweaty, covered in ash, exhausted—kept pushing forward, guided by Stevie’s tireless enthusiasm.

Even when darkness began to creep over the bush, Stevie didn’t slow down. His ears apped, his paws churned up dust, and his helmet clinked as he ran.

But eventually—after hour upon hour of ghting—the great roar of the re softened. The ames shrank.

The embers cooled. The smoke thinned into a gentle haze.

And then, with a nal hiss of steam and a sigh of relief from the entire brigade, the bush re was declared extinguished.

Stevie stood at the front of the crew, chest puffed, whiskers singed, tail wagging proudly.

Captain Julian knelt beside him.

“You did good today, mate.”

Stevie leaned into the captain’s leg, exhausted and satis ed.

Back at the Fire Station The journey home was quiet. Stars twinkled overhead, and the moon cast a gentle silver glow across the countryside. The worst was over. The koalas were safe. The bush was saved. And Stevie,

though ghting to keep his eyes open, remained steadfastly upright in the truck.

When they reached the Maleny Fire Station, nobody rested just yet. There was still work to be done— hoses to coil, tanks to re ll, trucks to scrub, ashcovered gear to wash.

Even Stevie waddled around supervising, though his steps were slower now and his tail wagged in a sleepy rhythm.

“Look at him,” Chris laughed. “Still on duty even after a full day.”

“He’s unstoppable,” Captain Julian agreed.

Finally— nally—the station was clean, the truck ready for the next emergency, and everyone gathered in the common room.

Someone cracked open a cooler of cold beers.

Stevie ambled over to his water bowl, which had been lled with cool, fresh water and placed near his favourite blanket.

The re ghters raised their drinks.

Stevie dipped his head and lapped noisily at his bowl.

“To another day’s work,” Captain Julian said.

“To the best re dog in Australia,” Chris added, raising his beer toward Stevie.

Stevie paused mid-drink and thumped his tail twice in acknowledgement.

“And,” Captain Julian added, “to Christmas! Merry Christmas and a safe holiday

Stevie let out one soft, contented bark—as close to “Merry Christmas” as a dachshund could manage—then curled up on his blanket, helmet askew, paws twitching as he drifted into dreams of heroism, gum trees, and koalas.

Outside, the night was calm, cool, and peaceful.

Inside, the brave little re dog slept soundly, knowing he’d earned his rest—and that next time the re bell rang, he’d be ready.

BEWARE !

The days when Company Directors could plead ignorance of their Company’s affairs are long gone, with the courts showing very little sympathy for Directors who use ignorance as a defence. No longer can a Director argue that the appointment was a token appointment or one that he or she was pressured into accepting.

Directors are expected to: •

Be proactive and actively participate in the management of the Company. Total nonparticipation is impermissible;

•

Understand the role that a Director performs;

•

Ensure that the solvency of the Company can be monitored on a continuing basis.

Directors in particular have an obligation to prevent their Company from incurring debts that the Company cannot pay for.

A Director is also expected to be able to judge the ne line between solvency and insolvency and be ready to act to prevent the Company engaging in insolvent trading. However, to be able to identify the ne line between solvent and insolvent trading is not an easy one.

It is the Company’s cash ow which is of crucial importance, and this is where the line between solvent and insolvent trading can be found. A Company is only solvent if it is able to pay all of its debts "as and when they fall due” – not just some of its debts. A Company that has a surplus of assets over liabilities can still be technically insolvent because of the lack of cash ow to cover its debts.

If it is alleged that a Director has contravened the Corporations Act in relation to insolvent trading, the Director must be able to prove one of the following as a defence: •

when the Company incurred the debt, the Director had reasonable grounds to expect that the Company was solvent and would remain solvent even if the debt was incurred; or

•

when the Company incurred the debt, the Director had reasonable grounds to believe (and actually believed) that a subordinate in the Company was competent enough to provide the correct information about the Company’s solvency status and that the

Director relied upon this information; or

That when the debt was incurred, the Director, because of illness or some other good reason, was unable to take part in the management of the company at that time; or

•

•

that the Director took all reasonable steps to stop the Company from incurring the debt.

It is clear that although Directors may delegate certain responsibilities to other subordinates in the Company, they are still obliged to have an active role in the management of the affairs of the Company. To fail in this obligation to properly discharge the duties of the office of a Director could lead to personal exposure to liability and, in many cases, significant sums of money.

Maleny Folk Festival, Bill Hauritz AM passes away The Woodford Folk Festival CEO, Ms Amanda Jakes, has announced the passing of the Festival founder, Mr. Bill Hauritz AM. In 1986, Bill was a guest speaker at the Maleny Rotary Club, and with a deep love of folk music, he proposed that a music festival in Maleny would not only be bene cial to the Maleny Community nancially but would be a unifying agency for the local community.

So, in 1987, the rst Maleny Folk Festival, coordinated by Bill Hauritz and the Queensland Folk Festival, and with the help of a number of Maleny service clubs, was held at the Maleny Showgrounds. Whilst in that rst year, only about 750 people attended, and in spite of some strong negative reaction from a handful of community members, the festival was deemed a success.

According to the 2021 census, Australians identifying as Christian are about 43.9% of the population, whilst about 40% identify as non-religious, agnostic, atheist, or unaf liated. Other religions such as Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism all rate at about the 3% mark. At the 1971 census, around 86% of the population classi ed themselves as following Christianity. This is a major drop in just a few decades, and most of those numbers have gone to not following any religion.

Christianity is beginning to fade in this century for several interconnected reasons.

Many societies are becoming more secular, with people placing greater value on science, personal autonomy, and individual spirituality rather than organised religion.

Younger generations often perceive churches as outdated or disconnected from modern life. Scandals within some institutions have also weakened trust. Migration and cultural diversity have introduced a wider range of beliefs, reducing Christianity’s dominance.

Additionally, busy lifestyles and digital technology have shifted attention away from traditional religious practices. Together, these factors contribute to a gradual decline in Christian af liation in many parts of the world.

A

t its heart, the Christian meaning of Christmas is wonderfully simple: it celebrates the moment when God came into the world as a human being in the person of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that in Bethlehem, over two thousand years ago, God chose to draw near in the most humble way possible—not as a mighty king or powerful ruler, but as a tiny baby born to Mary and Joseph in a stable. This remarkable event is known as the Incarnation, meaning “God made esh.” It is the foundation of Christmas.

Christmas is not only about the birth of Jesus, but also about why He came. According to the Christian faith, Jesus was born so that humanity could be brought back into a right relationship with God. His life, teachings, death, and resurrection would become God’s plan for salvation. But Christmas focuses on the beginning of that story—the moment hope entered the world in the form of a child. For Christians,

this birth is a sign of God’s love, God’s mercy, and God’s desire to be with His people.

Another central message of Christmas is light overcoming darkness. The world into which Jesus was born was troubled, much like ours today. By sending His Son, Christians believe God offered light, peace, and a new way forward. This is why many Christmas traditions—candles, star decorations, and nativity scenes—point back to that theme of divine light shining into human struggle.

Christmas also carries a message of humility. Jesus’ birth in a manger shows that God values the lowly and the ordinary. Shepherds, not kings or nobles, were the rst to hear the news. This reminds Christians that God’s love is for everyone, regardless of status or circumstance.

Finally, Christmas is about joy—not just the joy of gatherings, gifts, or carols, but the deeper joy of knowing that God has entered human history to bring hope and salvation. Christians celebrate because they believe Emmanuel, meaning “God with us,” is not just a name but a promise.

In its purest form, the Christian meaning of Christmas is this: God loved the world so much that He came to live among us through Jesus Christ, bringing hope, peace, and the promise of eternal life. Everything else—traditions, celebrations, and festivities— ows from that simple and profound truth.

Jewish families live in predominantly Christian societies and are aware of Christmas as a major cultural event. For them, Christmas often has social and cultural signi cance rather than religious meaning. For many Jews, it is simply a day like any other.

Whilst Christianity is the most followed religion in the world at about 2.3 billion followers, it is now closely followed by Islam, which is followed by about 1.9 billion followers.

It can be a time to observe the season in ways that re ect family, community, and kindness, even if they do not celebrate the holiday in a religious sense.

So what is it that the Islam religion offers?

Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world.

In simple terms, from a Muslim viewpoint, the meaning of Christmas lies in honouring the miraculous birth of Jesus, appreciating his role as a beloved prophet, and recognising the story as a reminder of God’s mercy and power—while maintaining a distinct Islamic understanding of his nature and mission.

Jesus—known as ‘Isa (peace be upon him)—is one of the greatest and most honoured prophets sent by God. His birth is viewed as a miracle and a mercy, not as the arrival of God in human form.

From an Islamic perspective, the meaning behind the birth of Jesus focuses on God’s power, Mary’s purity, and Jesus’ role as a guide and messenger.

His life is seen as an example of humility, devotion to God, service to others, and moral courage.

Muslims believe that Jesus was given the Gospel (Injil), performed miracles by God’s permission, and called people to worship the one God. So what about the Jewish religion?

For Jewish people, Christmas is not a religious holiday because Judaism does not recognise Jesus as the Messiah or a divine gure. However, many

The most popular religion in India, with about 79– 80% of the population identifying as Hindu.

Hinduism does not traditionally celebrate Christmas, as Hindus do not recognise Jesus as a religious gure.

They focus on their own religious festivals like Diwali, Holi, or Navratri.

If the world’s religions were to disappear over the next 100 years, the consequences would be complex, affecting culture, ethics, social cohesion, politics, and personal identity. The loss of religious voices in public ethics and debate could also create moral or cultural vacuums, and it is highly likely that other ideologies or nationalism might take their place, and not necessarily for any better society. It is likely that it would increase existential uncertainty for many people.

Many religious institutions provide community, charity, and social support. Their disappearance could reduce certain forms of communal identity and mutual aid.

In conclusion - “Celebrate Christmas in your own way and may it be merry and peaceful”.

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

What to do if you need assistance

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies.

By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, ood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

Maleny Visitor Information Centre The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for pro t, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny avour along with information about places and events around the area.

The Centre is situated at 2/23 Maple Street, Maleny. It is open 7 days a week between 9.30am-4.00pm.

Prior to that the Australian migration policy was focused on assimilation, underpinned by the "White Australia" policy Multiculturalism is the coexistence of multiple cultures within a country’s society.

Australia is widely considered one of the most multicultural countries in the world, with a huge percentage of its population born overseas or with migrant parents, and a rich tapestry of languages and ancestries, making it a highly diverse country.

Australia’s cultural character has undergone signi cant change over recent decades, shaped by globalisation, mass migration, and shifting geopolitical tensions.

While Australia has long de ned itself as a successful multicultural society, recent debates around anti-Semitism, social cohesion, and communal con ict suggest growing strains within the social fabric that warrant careful and balanced examination.

Historically, Australia’s Jewish community has been relatively small but well integrated, bene ting from strong legal protections and broad social acceptance. Anti-Semitism certainly existed, but for much of the post-war period it remained largely marginal and socially unacceptable. In recent years, however, reported incidents of anti-Jewish harassment,

vandalism, and intimidation have increased, particularly during periods of heightened con ict in the Middle East. This shift has unsettled many Australians who assumed such tensions were largely external to domestic life.

Mass migration has played a role in reshaping Australia’s cultural landscape. Large-scale arrivals from Africa and the Middle East have added linguistic, religious, and cultural diversity, enriching Australian society in many respects. However, migration on this scale has also introduced complex challenges around integration, social norms, and the transmission of overseas political and religious con icts into local communities. In some cases, imported grievances—particularly those linked to Middle Eastern con icts—have contributed to heightened tensions involving Jewish Australians. It is important to note that anti-Semitism does not originate from any single community; it has emerged from multiple sources, including farright extremism, conspiracy movements, and radical ideological interpretations within a minority of migrant and nonmigrant populations alike.

High-pro le events have intensi ed public concern. The 2005 Cronulla riots remain a de ning moment in modern Australian history, exposing deep fractures around identity, belonging, and cultural difference. Although primarily driven by anti-Arab and antiMuslim sentiment, the riots demonstrated how quickly social cohesion can collapse when cultural anxieties, media narratives, and political rhetoric converge. They also highlighted the dangers of framing national identity in exclusionary terms.

The offender in the 2014 Lindt Cafe massacre, Man Haron Monis, was an Iranian-born individual who shortly before the siege pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group, and a black ag with white Arabic script, similar to those used by Islamic militants, was displayed in the cafe window during the incident. After the incident, IS praised him in a propaganda magazine.

More recently, the Bondi Junction attack in 2024—often loosely described in public discourse as the “Bondi” massacre—sparked renewed debate about social violence and communal safety.

The speed with which speculation spread illustrated how fragile trust has become and how quickly violence is interpreted through cultural and political lenses.

Taken together, these developments suggest that Australia is grappling with the limits of its multicultural model.

Diversity itself is not the problem; rather, insuf cient integration, uneven enforcement of shared civic values, and reluctance to confront extremism in all its forms

have contributed to social fragmentation.

Preserving Australia’s democratic culture requires reaf rming common legal and ethical standards, protecting minority communities—including Jewish Australians—from hatred, and ensuring that migration policy is matched with serious investment in social cohesion. Without this balance, cultural pluralism risks giving way to division rather than mutual respect.

Both Britain and France have undergone signi cant changes as a result of large-scale migration from Muslim-majority countries and parts of Africa over recent decades. Of cial assessments in both countries acknowledge that

while migration has contributed labour, cultural diversity, and demographic renewal, it has also generated signi cant policy challenges where integration has been uneven or poorly managed.

Their authorities have also noted dif culties in social cohesion, including residential segregation, language barriers, and the emergence of parallel communities where civic participation and shared norms are weaker. Security agencies have further acknowledged the challenge of monitoring radicalisation risks among a very small minority, while stressing that the vast majority of migrants are law-abiding. .

What began as a seemingly calm Sunday afternoon, after a long and busy week for so many families, gradually gave way to a growing sense that something terrible was unfolding in Sydney. As details emerged from Bondi, it became clear that we were witnessing an antisemitic act of shocking brutality and horror— confronting, heartbreaking, and deeply disturbing.

Lives were stolen. Families have been shattered. Children, parents, and grandparents were caught in violence while simply gathering in peace to celebrate the rst night of Chanukah— the Festival of Lights.

I want to express my heartfelt support for Australia’s Jewish community, who were targeted while celebrating faith, light, and hope, and for all those who were harmed or killed, regardless of who they were or where they came from. Violence driven by hatred does not con ne its cruelty to one group. It devastates everyone it touches.

Hatred will not have the nal word in Australia. What de nes us is how we respond, together.

Following the tragic event that happened on Bondi Beach in Sydney on the afternoon of Sunday, December 14th, the rst decision of the Federal government was to declare it will back tougher gun laws, including a requirement that only Australian citizens can hold a licence.

Debates about tightening Australia’s gun laws often assume that further restrictions would materially reduce the likelihood of violent incidents such as the one alleged at Bondi Beach in December 2025. That assumption is contestable. Australia already operates under some of the most restrictive civilian rearms regulations in the world, including comprehensive licensing, registration, safe-storage requirements, and bans on most semi-automatic weapons. As a result, rearms are rarely the primary instrument in violent public incidents.

The decision for gun control under the Howard government in 1996 following the Port Arthur massacre was not right then, and tighter gun controls now will not solve the problem that caused this mass murder situation.

Australia, which has become worse over the past 2 to 3 years. It has moved from merely racist statements in social media to graf ti on walls and now to mass murder.

A central limitation of additional gun control is that it does not address the dominant drivers of contemporary violence: mental health crises, ideological radicalisation, substance abuse, and the use of readily available nonrearm weapons. Many high-pro le attacks in Australia and comparable jurisdictions have involved knives, vehicles, or improvised weapons, none of which are meaningfully constrained by gun legislation. Tighter gun laws cannot prevent an individual intent on harm from exploiting these alternatives.

Determined individuals do not acquire weapons through lawful channels. Tighter gun laws have not stopped those with criminal intent from not being able to easily obtain them and only penalise those with honest uses for them and also disarms the majority of the country so that in times of need they do not have them.

Reducing violent incidents is more plausibly achieved through improved intelligence sharing, early intervention for at-risk individuals, visible policing in high-density areas, and robust mental health services. Without addressing these systemic factors, additional gun laws are unlikely to make incidents of mass violence materially less likely.

Calling for tighter gun control is only an answer that a person who has no idea about what to do under these tragic circumstances would make and then only for political purposes to say that he had done something.

As after the Port Arthur massacre, gun control laws were brought in at enormous nancial expense to the Australian Commonwealth, and then it was simply “washed one’s hands and nothing further was done about the problem of mental health”.

On this occasion, it will be the same, but nothing will be done about anti-Semitism in
