On December 19th the Maleny SES Group hosted its end-of-year awards ceremony at the Maleny Emergency Service HQ to recognise members and their ongoing commitment to public safety and service to the local community.

Group Leader Sarsha received the Glen Ellis Memorial Shield Stepping Up Award in recognition of her leadership.

Queensland Government to reform e-bike laws Following the death of 12 young people across Queensland in the past 12 months involving ebikes the Queeensland Government is to make further urgent updates to regulations in respect to ebikes. These reforms mean that many e-bikes were now classi ed as motorbikes. Presently there is a parliamentary committee into the matter and is expected to nish its inquiry into e-scooters and e-bikes by March 2026.

Bondi Event shakes Australian society and it is one of those events that will be long remembered

Over recent weeks, Australians have been reminded of our shared vulnerability, and of how a single act of blind hatred can change a country forever. Events that should never have occurred have shaken our sense of safety and left many people carrying grief that words cannot easily reach.

Australia has long been a place where people believed they could live freely and safely. Our neighbourhoods, public spaces, and communities have traditionally been places where families gather, children play, and people from every background build a life. When that sense of safety is broken anywhere, it is felt everywhere.

Recent events have reminded us that social cohesion does not maintain itself. It is built through ordinary human choices, repeated quietly, day by day. Through noticing one another. Through making room.

Through choosing care over indifference.

As we step into the new year, I have just one wish.

The rise in the number of ebikes on our roads is causing an increased danger to other road users Over the past month or so, it has been noticed that a group of youth are riding their e-bikes around Maleny streets in a haphazard manner and not complying with any of the regulations.

Some of this activity occurs in the very early hours of the morning.

The popularity of e-bikes as a means of transport around our towns continues to grow. Whilst some ebikes might look tempting, not all are legal for Queensland roads.

In Queensland, legal e-bikes must be pedal-assist, have a 250W motor, and cut assistance at 25 km/h; they're allowed on most roads/paths with bicycle rules,

almoral Ecolodge Pty Ltd is proposing an “Ecotourism development” will include self contained single-storey cabins on steep and uneven previously grazing land in Sinclairs Lane, Balmoral Ridge.

The development is expected to include eight high speci ctionn cabins will be built on the 60 acres of already cleared grazing land. The development which will include 11 car parks will have two access points from Sinclairs Lane which is a quiet country laneway off Balmoral Road, Balmoral in an area that is already a popuarv tourist area.

The cabins will be offered onlly for shortbstay accommodation and the location of the cabins will offer stunning views across the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

requiring helmets, no licence/reg, but modi ed or throttle-only bikes are illegal for road use, as are e-scooters (unless under 200W/25kmh), with strict rules against phone use and drunk riding.

Whichever e-bike you have, they must always be used with an approved helmet properly strapped.

The requirements for the use of these vehicles are quite stringent, and any departure from the rules attracts heavy penalties.

Within the next couple of months, we will take a look at what is required to legally ride these vehicles on the road.

Those who have had no experience in this, however, should take note of various factors which may lead to trouble.

In the case of a car of normal design coasting may be indulged in by en gaging neutral, or if a free-wheel device or suction clutch is tted, by simply removing the foot from, the throttle pedal.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions Tightning gun laws now will not make Australia any safer for anyone?

Following the Bondi Massacre, the rst utterance by the Prime Minister was that Australia’s gun laws would be tightened further to stop this type of horri c incident.

I remember similar sentiments were uttered after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, the rst utterance then by Prime Minister, Mr Howard. The introduction of gun laws then was not right and did nothing for Australia except expend large amounts of taxpayers’ money for no bene t.

I am not a gun owner and have no interest in any activities involving guns, so it matters little to me personally.

Tightening gun laws further in Australia is unlikely to provide meaningful protection against anti-Semitic violence.

Australia already maintains some of the strictest rearm regulations in the world, following the 1996 National Firearms Agreement, which signi cantly reduced mass shootings and restricted civilian access to semi-automatic weapons. Despite these regulations, targeted attacks driven by ideology or hatred, such as anti-Semitism, are rarely prevented by stricter rearm controls alone.

Anti-Semitic violence is primarily motivated by prejudice, radicalisation, or extremist ideology rather than easy access to guns. Individuals intent on committing hate crimes may resort to other weapons or methods, including knives, explosives, or vehicular attacks. Therefore, legislative focus solely on guns addresses only one possible tool rather than the root causes of antisemitism.

Effective protection requires a multi-layered approach, including community engagement, intelligence monitoring of extremist groups, robust law enforcement, and education programs to counter hate and radicalisation. Increased surveillance of threats, security measures at vulnerable locations such as synagogues and schools, and stronger social cohesion initiatives are far more directly relevant to reducing anti-Semitic incidents.

Apart from that, over a long period of recent time, we are seeing more and more unlawful activities involving rearms.

It is not dif cult to obtain rearms by anyone who wants one.

In summary, while gun laws may be important for general public safety, further restrictions will not meaningfully diminish anti-Semitic attacks in Australia because the threat arises from ideology, not rearm availability.

And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t” Truthful tells us that one of his relatives, Paddy, was a driver for Einstein in a previous life.

One day, Einstein had to speak at an important science conference, and Paddy had to drive him there.

On the way there, Einstein comments to Paddy, his driver, that looks a bit like him.

Einstein then says, “I'm sick of all these conferences. I always say the same things over and over!"

Paddy agrees and says: "You're right. As your driver, I attended all of them with you, and even though I don't know anything about science, I could give the conference in your place.”

"That's a great idea!" says Einstein. "Let's switch places then!”.

So they switch clothes, and as soon as they arrive at the conference, Paddy, dressed as Einstein, goes on stage and starts giving the usual speech, while the real Einstein, dressed as the car driver, sits at the back of the conference room.

But in the crowd, there is one scientist who wants to impress everyone and thinks of a very dif cult question to ask Einstein, hoping he won't be able to respond.

So this guy stands up and interrupts the conference by posing his very dif cult question. The whole room goes silent, holding their breath, waiting for the response.

The driver looks at him, dead in the eye, and says: "Sir, your question is so easy to answer that I'm going to let my driver reply to it for me."

Morale: Sometimes when you draw attention to yourself, you cannot always dictate what the consequences will be, and they might come back and bite you.

Santa sought Stevies help at Christmas You wouldn’t guess what happened to Stevie the dachshund dog that normally works at the Maleny Paint Shop over Christmas. It is almost too much to believe that it is true - but it is.

Santa Claus was worried. And not just a little bit worried—oh no. He was “stroking-his-beard-so-hard-sparks-werealmost- ying” worried.

It all started about three days before Christmas, when Santa was sitting in his big red armchair reading the Naughty and Nice List for Queensland, Australia. But something strange was happening.

The list kept growing.

And growing.

And growing!

“Mrs Claus!” Santa called, scratching his head under his hat.

“Either Queensland has had the busiest year of babies ever… or I need new glasses!”

Mrs Claus hurried in with a cup of hot cocoa. “Santa dear, the elves checked the numbers. Queensland’s population really has exploded this year. You can’t deliver all those presents alone—not unless you sprout another eight reindeer.”

Santa slumped. His belly jiggled like a bowl of jelly that had given up hope. “That settles it,” he sighed. “I need help.”

Enter Steve the Tan Dachshund Far below the snow and sparkle of the North Pole, in sunny Queensland, lived a tan dachshund named Steve. Stevie had been trained by Andy the Maleny postman how to deliver parcels properly and carefully.Steve was known for three important things: 1.

His ears apped like tiny helicopter blades when he ran.

2.

His tail wagged so hard it once knocked over a garden gnome.

3.

He was extremely, positively, absolutely helpful.

Continued from Previous Page So when a puff of magical glitter popped open above his backyard and Santa Claus stepped out, Steve didn’t even bark. He simply wagged his tail so fast he nearly took off.

“Ho, ho, ho!” Santa boomed. “Steve the helpful dachshund, I need your assistance!”

Steve straightened up proudly. “What can I do, Santa? Fetch a stick? Chase a cat? Taste-test cookies to make sure they’re safe?”

Santa chuckled. “Better. I need you to deliver Christmas presents to all of Queensland. There are simply too many this year. Also I need somebody who can deliver parcels properly and caarefully. You have been trained by Andy the postman. I don’t want any broken or damaged parcels delivered to the children of Queensland..”

Steve's eyes widened. “Me? Deliver all of Queensland’s presents? But… I’m only little!”

“Yes,” Santa said, patting his head. “But you’re brave, loyal, clever, and quick—exactly what I need.

And I’ve got a spare sleigh you can use.”

The Backup Sleigh from Santa’s Shed Santa snapped his ngers, and with a whoosh of cold winter magic, an old but shiny sleigh appeared in Steve’s yard. It was red (mostly), a bit dented (only on both sides), and had a sticker that said “Property of Emergency Santa – Do Not Use for Racing.”

Steve gasped. “It’s beautiful!”

“It’s… adequate,” Santa admitted. “I kept it in my shed for emergencies—which this year certainly is!”

Santa walked Steve around the sleigh proudly.

“She might rattle a bit and she leans left when you turn right. But she’s sturdy, been very reliable and

has never dropped a single present. It will do the job just ne” Steve hopped in—well, climbed with a slight scramble—into the driver’s seat and puffed out his chest. “I’ll do it, Santa! Queensland will get their presents!”

Here is a magical golden key. It will get you into any door as long as you are wearing Santa’s magical badge. But, it only workd on Christmas Eve. Santa smiled with relief. “Good! Now… you’ll need a team to pull it.”

Friends from the Dog House in the Sky A gentle breeze rustled. A warm, glowing shimmer lled the air. Steve wagged slowly as he realised what he was seeing. Two familiar shapes appeared —tail wagging, eyes shining, surrounded by soft, golden light.

It was Buddy, the brown Labrador who used to live next door until he went to live in the dog house in the sky, always cheerful, always ready for a game.

And Rajah, the golden German Shepherd, noble and strong, with a bark that used to make the magpies behave. He used to live with my family but I never met him, but I will tonight..

Their paws didn’t quite touch the ground. Their fur glowed like sunrise. But they looked happy— peaceful—and very real.

Steve’s eyes prickled. “Buddy? Rajah? You’re… here?”

Buddy gave a soft, magical woof. his head proudly.

Santa spoke gently. “They’ve come from the Dog House in the Sky. They wanted to help one more time. They know how much their families miss

“Queensland’s big—wouldn’t want you turning right at Toowoomba and ending up in Tasmania by accident.”

The Christmas Eve Delivery Dash Night fell on Christmas Eve, and the “crew was ready”. Stars twinkled. Queensland shimmered with hot summer air—very different from the North Pole. Steve stood proudly at the reins.

“Team, are you ready?” he barked. Comet stomped a hoof. Buddy yipped. Rajah woofed with calm con dence.

“LET’S FLY!” With a burst of golden magic, the sleigh shot forward, up into the sky. Steve squealed with

They braved the summer storm over the Gold Coast, with Ranger barking courage into the thunderclouds.

“Uh… Steve? According to the map, this is supposed to be a suburb.”

Steve blinked at the cows. The cows blinked back.

Then Steve checked the map upside down. “Oh. Oops.”

The Final Stretch By dawn, only a few houses remained. Steve was drooping, exhausted but proud. “Nearly done, team,” he murmured. “Queensland kids are counting on us.”

Buddy nudged him with a glowing nose. Ranger barked softly.

Santa knelt beside them. “You two brought joy to your families in life. Tonight you did it again.” The Labrador and Shepherd slowly began to fade, but they were smiling—big doggy smiles full of love and peace.

“Goodbye, friends,” Steve whispered. “Thanks for ying with me.” Buddy gave one last wag. Rajah gave one last proud nod.

And then they shimmered away into the sky.

A Christmas Morning to Remember Santa picked up Steve and gave him a gentle squeeze. “You were incredible. Queensland owes you big time. And I am sure that that training from Postman Andy was a big help..”

Steve beamed. “Does this mean… I might get a job at the North Pole?” Santa winked. “Let’s just say we’ll keep your sleigh spot warm. And I am sure Buddy and Rajah will be back next year.

And with that, Santa disappeared in a twirl of snow akes. Steve curled up on his favourite blanket, nally drifting to sleep as Christmas morning dawned.

He had saved Christmas—in the most Queensland way possible.

And somewhere, high above, two glowing dogs watched proudly from the Dog House in the Sky.

The 2025 - 2026 Ashes series is a series of ve Cricket Test cricket matches being played in Australia between Australia and England for “The Ashes Trophy” with the rst match having started on the 21st November 2025 and the fth game starting on the 8th January 2026.

The Ashes is only between Australia and England because of a legendary satirical obituary from 1882 in an English newspaper, when Australia rst beat England in England and the English captain vowed to "regain those ashes.”

The Ashes trace their origin to 1882, following a shock defeat of England by Australia at The Oval in London. Australia’s seven-run victory was England’s rst home loss to the Australians, and it caused widespread consternation in the English press. In response, The Sporting Times published a mock obituary stating that “English cricket had died” and that “the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”

When England toured Australia in 1882–83, England’s captain Ivo Bligh vowed to “regain those ashes.” During the tour, Bligh was presented with a small terracotta urn by a group of Melbourne women, believed to contain the ashes of a burnt cricket bail, though other theories suggest a stump or even a veil.

The atmosphere of early Ashes contests was intense but

Even Witta has a place in the history of Ashes Cricket. Otto Ernest Nothling, born and lived at Witta in 1900. He represented Australia, as well as an Australian cricketer who played in one Test in 1928.

He is one of only two Australian rugby and cricket dual internationals.

Relatives of Otto Nothling still live in the Maleny/Witta area. At the time of his death in 1965 he was President of the Queensland Cricket Association.

The Bodyline Era and Rising Hostility A major turning point in the Ashes atmosphere occurred during the 1932–33 series in Australia, infamous for England’s use of “Bodyline” bowling tactics aimed at neutralising Don Bradman. England’s fast bowlers, led by Harold Larwood, bowled short-pitched deliveries directed at the batsman’s body with legside elders positioned to catch de ections.

While technically legal at the time, Bodyline was perceived as dangerous and unsporting. The series provoked diplomatic tension between Australia and England and deeply divided public opinion.

Crowds became openly hostile, particularly in Australia, and the spirit of the rivalry took on a sharper, more antagonistic edge.

The episode marked the rst major instance where the Ashes transcended sport and entered the realm of international controversy.

It was with this series that the Australian Broadcasting Commission began live broadcasting of the games. The 1930s, ABC broadcasters Charles Moses and Mel Morris devised a method of bringing test cricket to Aussie radio audiences.

ABC cricket commentator, Alan McGilvray began his cricket broadcasting career in 1934. He started by providing synthetic radio commentary in the studio, based on coded cables from matches overseas, before moving to live ball-by-ball coverage after World War I1.

When the games were played in England information was sent from the ground in England via cable to Sydney. Experts would take this information and provide details for the commentator via model cricket elds in the Sydney studio. As each shot was called, a sound effects operator played

Not too many of them can keep them and reach their endpoint goal.

New Year's resolutions are personal goals for self-improvement in areas like health (exercise, diet, sleep), finances (saving, budgeting), relationships (family, friends), and skills (learning, hobbies) that people set at the start of a new year, often aiming for positive change but frequently struggling to maintain them.

he tradition of making New Year resolutions is a long-standing social practice rooted in re ection, renewal, and the symbolic signi cance of a fresh calendar year.

This tradition dates back to ancient civilizations such as the Babylonians and later the Romans.

Be Prepared for severe weather events

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

What to do if you need assistance

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies.

By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, ood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

Maleny Visitor Information Centre The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for pro t, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny avour along with information about places and events around the area.

The Centre is situated at 2/23 Maple Street, Maleny. It is open 7 days a week between 9.30am-4.00pm.

Closed only on Good Friday and Christmas Day. If you have lost something on your visit to Maleny check with the centre as often items are handed in there. Phone: 07 5499 9033

“Peak Hour in Maleny” Maple Street, Maleny - 1940.

Not only were the streets buzzing, but on Wednesday May 29th, 1940 a very successful garden party was held in the Maleny Presbyterian Church grounds. The gate takings amounted to £5, and in addition very brisk business was done at the jumble stall.

The gardens were gay with marigolds and bowls of marigolds and bowls of poinsettia were placed about the lawn. The afternoon nished with a “dainty afternoon tea”.

Just how things have changed from those wild days to today’s serenity!.
