Maleny has seen very high rainfall totals swamping the area and closing many roads. Many rural roads have suffered severe degradation and will require maintenance that is not immediately available. Take care when driving on rural roads. The authorities will make repairs as quickly as possible.

Parks and Gardens Maintenance Update Our Parks and Gardens are looking greener than ever and continue to be maintained to the highest possible standard by our committed Parks and Gardens and Cemetery Services teams.

As you are aware, continued higher than above rainfall has inhibited our teams at times to provide consistent, timely servicing of our parks, cemeteries and roadways with the current weather we are experiencing further exacerbating our issues.

Many areas throughout the Sunshine Coast experienced overnight rainfall greater than 200mm which has resulted in many of our parks being inundated. This will keep our staff extremely busy in the short term responding to ood damage. Dr Tony Parer Park Shelter opposite the Maleny Hospital has also received a complete clean and pressure wash. It looks fabulous We are further anticipating higher than average vegetation / grass growth as a result of this weather and we seek to quickly bring our open space assets back to acceptable standards. Our staff and contractors

continue to work overtime and have done an amazing job in delivering services across our community.

Their dedication and motivation has been on show for all, in which they continue to work through what has been a challenging growth season.

On a positive note we are seeing night time temperatures reducing gradually which will reduce soil temperatures resulting in slower growth.

Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell Roadworks on Woombye to Montville Road The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have advised that vegetation management works on the full length of Woombye-Montville Road, between Woombye and Montville will be conducted until early March - weather permitting. Works will be undertaken at night, Sunday to Thursday between 6pm and 6am.

TMR's maintenance contractor will be clearing vegetation and trees close to the road, removing potential hazards, improving the visibility of road signage and increasing the rebreak within the road corridor.

For traf c safety, traf c controllers, reduced speed limits, road signage and variable message signs will be in place.

Men’s Sheds throughout Australia provide an important part of Men’s Health

Mr Andrew Wallace Federal MP for Fisher On February 22nd I was privileged to turn the rst sod on the new Maleny Men's Shed which is situated in the grounds of the Maleny Historical Society.

After the sod turning I was presented with a stunning gavel masterfully crafted by the Shed members.

The shed is an ex Vietnam War "Army Shed", donated by the ADF, will provide much needed space for alternative activities, a breakout area for smokos etc.

During the presentation one member was heard to say, “I am sure that you will nd something hard to hit with that.”

From July, , who earn less than $450p/m will be eligible to receive superannuation for the rst time.

That's effectively a 10% pay boost for SunshineCoast families - and for 200,000 women nationwide.

Also, from 1 July, 2022, the minimum age that you can make a down-sizer contribution will drop from 65 to 60.

When only the best will do!

Ingredients 4 x 200g porterhouse steaks, fat trimmed 500g “microwave in a bag” mini white potatoes 2 carrots, peeled, cut into batons 1 bunch broccolini, trimmed 1 cup frozen peas

Heat a lightly oiled chargrill pan or barbecue on high.

Cook steaks for 3 minutes each side or until cooked to your liking. Rest for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, cook potatoes in packet for 4 to 5 minutes on HIGH (100%) or until tender, adding carrots, broccolini and peas in a microwave safe container for 2 to 3 minutes or until tender In a non-stick frying pan heat oil over medium-high heat.

Add onions and cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until softened.

In a jug, prepare gravy according to packet instructions.

Add gravy to pan, season and stir to combine. Simmer for 1 minute or until heated through Serve steaks with gravy and vegetables. Sprinkle with parsley, to serve.

1 tsp olive oil

Tips to make it a good meal!

1 brown onion, thinly sliced 29g packet traditional gravy mix Chopped parsley, to serve.

“Ask The butcher. Skip the expensive beef if you’re cooking it well

Use any type of steak for this recipe – eye llet, scotch and rump would also work well.

Substitute potatoes with shoestring or sweet potato fries Any vegetables of choice would work well and can be microwaved – snow peas, green beans, broccoli, and squash, to name a few.

Most butchers like their beef on the rare side. If you prefer well done, go for it, but you can probably skip the most expensive steaks.

Changes to Covid Restrictions The Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has recently announced that there was some changes as to how COVID-19 will be managed in the state as from 6pm on March 4th.

Masks won't be needed at school, work, shops, pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants.

Masks WILL still be needed on public transport, airports, hospitals, disability care, aged care and prisons Density limits will no longer apply for weddings, funerals, food courts, hairdressers,

gyms, private venues, universities and gatherings in your own home For schools, the ban on excursions, assemblies and visitors will no longer apply.

People are still urged people to still wear a mask in places where they cannot socially distance.

Maleny SES Volunteer group Driving through ood Waters Irrespective of the number of times that motorists have been advised about the dangers of driving through oodwater, some will always take their chance.

Following the torrential rainfall on February 22nd and 23rd, where Malenyites were recording between 200 and 300mm, a woman was found dead in her submerged car in oodwaters in Belli Park on Wednesday morning.

Another man is believed to be missing in oodwaters after his motorbike was found near Green Creek Bridge, Cedar Pocket Rd. Many roads throughout the Sunshine Coat hinterland were closed because of ooding.

How do know that the roadway under the water surface is not like the above photo and you are about to drive through the water and unbeknown drive into this road damage?

QFES deputy commissioner Mark Roche said motorists were not heeding warning about driving in ooded roads. Swift water rescue teams have had to attend

up to 40 incidents over 3 days of the heaviest rain.

When you are about to head to work, or elsewhere always take extra caution in wet weather.as multiple roads could be ooded, and there is no way any council would be able to have signs at them all as the conditions change by the minute. As a driver you have some responsibility for yourself and your passengers.

But then, I guess it is alright the SES Volunteers will come to the rescue!.

Locally, the ground is so wet and water logged, the trees are starting to feel the impact and dropping all over the place this is what our team face heading to another job.

Last week’s wild weather will mean a major clean-up operation for the Witta Recreational Club playing and sports elds.

The vision of the club is to provide country club services to be enjoyed by the local community and visitors to the area.

Spare a thought for the many volunteers who will be mopping up change rooms, clearing debris from facilities and trying to repair and restore playing surfaces.

The excellent facilities of the Witta Recreation Club are available for hire for events such as weddings, sports days, family gatherings.

The Witta Recreation Club sports elds became a lake, more resembling an inland sea. This closed off Cooke Road for some time.

Now whilst farmers and conservationists haven’t always been the best of friends we soon developed a simple language of him pointing with the 3 phrases that I understood “kill - Don’t kill and Nuke” Needless to say we’ve covered some ground,

Twinnies Seabird Rescue at Landsborough hit hard by this weeks storms “WE NEED YOU MORE THAN EVER DONATIONS NEEDED”

The Twinnies from Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue at Landsborough really do need your help following another storm that came in last Wednesday night and caused signi cant damage to their Rescue HQ which is located at Landsborough on the Sunshine Coast The entire precinct has been hit hard by the oods and now there is lots to do to rebuild the rescue centre.

Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue is relying on the generosity of the community to chip in so once again the job of nursing back to health the precious pelicans and birds can continue.

Needed are new outdoor pens, drains and fences to protect and give the best care to the Please donate now:

The Twinnies are not sure what the next few days holds in terms of the weather but they are doing their best for the pelicans and birds in care.

The Twinnies said; “We’ve estimated that it will cost us about $35,000 to get back on our feet. Every dollar that you kindly donate will go towards rebuilding the Rescue HQ. We receive no government funding so are completely reliant on community generosity.”

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions With the weather continuing to devastate many families and their homes and businesses it must be time to give some thought to the process of town planning and the use of ood plains.

For decades now we have been converting oodplains which were previously used for agriculture into building blocks. It should have been evident all along that this practise sown the tract of time would be fraught with danger. Still local councils allowed the practice to continue.

Developers have been careful to create sub divisions that maybe are ood free when constructed, however all they have done is shift large volumes of water from one area to another without thought for those who live in that other area.

All in the name of obscene pro ts for a few and misery for many more.

Some of these areas have been ood infected a number of times in one persons lifetime and this has now led to many people not being able to afford insurance thus are left to nancially fend for themselves. Thus in that person’s lifetime the value of the original pro t has been expended many times, but that is OK because the original developer has taken his money and gone.

It is time that all levels of authority takes another look at development practices and ensures that an adequate a range of ood-mitigation initiatives are required from the inception to prevent the situation that many Australians nd themselves in today.

This not only applies to land development, but to building design and construction requirements. Right from the start, better preparation and mitigation, not only of ooding, but wild res and cyclones could save the nation hundreds of millions of dollars a year with better planning and project placements.

It is not too dif cult, but initially it may reduce developers pro ts, but in the longer time it will be better for Australia and Australians.

Come on Australia - take the tough decisions.

She began her day nding the most perfect shoes in the rst shop and a beautiful dress on sale in the second.

It was a female doctor notifying her that her husband had just been in a terrible car accident and was in critical condition and in the ICU. The woman told the doctor to inform her husband where she was and that she'd be there as soon as possible.

As she hung up she realised she was leaving what was shaping up to be her best day ever in the boutiques.

She decided to get in a couple of more shops before heading to the hospital.

She ended up shopping the rest of the morning, nishing her trip with a cup of coffee and a beautiful chocolate cake slice, compliments of the last shop. She was jubilant.

Then she remembered her husband. Feeling guilty, she dashed to the hospital.

She saw the doctor in the corridor and asked about her husband's condition. The lady doctor glared at her and shouted, 'You went ahead and nished your shopping trip didn't you! I hope you're proud of yourself!

While you were out for the past four hours enjoying yourself in town, your husband has been languishing in the Intensive Care Unit! It's just as well you went ahead and nished, because it will more than likely be the last shopping trip you ever take!

For the rest of his life he will require round-the-clock care. And YOU will now be his carer!

The woman was feeling so guilty she broke down and sobbed.

The lady doctor then chuckled and said, 'I'm just pulling your leg...He's dead. Show me what you bought.’

Moral of the story: Is that women just cannot contain their need to go shopping, irrespective of the circumstances surrounding them!

Colin Hastie’s Murderer faces court The murderer of Colin Scott Hastie, also known as“Magical Col” or “The Philosopher of Maple Street”, much-loved local has faced court for his murder.

Most Maleny locals knew Colin Hastie who lived in Macadamia Drive, Maleny. He was regularly in Maple Street, Maleny and he always took the time to stop and have a chat with people. He was known to many people in Maleny and lived "a quiet lifestyle”. He never had a bad thing to say about anyone.

When he left the conversation he always left with a message, such as, “keep on smiling beautiful’ or ’keep on shining a light’.

On the 16th April, 2019, Colin, who was 63 years of age was found slumped on the front stair area on the outside of his house by a teenage boy delivering pamphlets. Colin was conveyed to the Maleny Hospital in a critical condition where he later died from his injuries.

On the 17th April, 2019 police charged Danielle Sheryl Erica Beutel, aged 39 years with three charges including,

The charge of dangerous operation of a vehicle has been adjourned to a date to be xed.

SES Volunteer dies in rescue attempt

An SES volunteer has died while responding to a call for assistance in Coolana on Friday night February 25th, 2022, according to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES).

The SES unit was assisting a family after ood water threatened to inundate their home. Emergency Service volunteers often put everyone ahead of themselves and go into harm’s way to save others.

The volunteer was travelling with three other SES personnel when their vehicle was swept off the road by major oods.

His three colleagues were rescued from the oodwater.

Maple Street Kiosk for hire!

Maleny Men’s Shed News

Located in Maple Street as part of the Maleny Community Centre, the Kiosk is available for hire to business and not-for-pro t organisations. It is a bonny little booth, well placed to capture all passers-by. All sorts of amazing goods and information can be found there.

The Mens Shed operates on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8am to midday. Men of all ages, backgrounds and interests are welcome. Activities include woodworking, metalworking and blacksmithing.

Maleny Mens Shed is a place for Maleny men to get together, enjoy some hands-on activities, make new friends and talk about "men's business”.

Beginning in 1994 Maleny Visitor Information Centre operated from the kiosk. The Centre shared the kiosk with the Country Women’s Association who used it as the Maleny baby changing rooms! It was affectionately known as ‘the hole in the wall’, and it gave the MVIC a street facing presence from which to serve the information needs of visitors to the town.

Some of our members led by Ashley showing off Squatters Chairs that they are refurbishing . Several others are working on projects, and all are willing to share their skills in the wood shop.

We have now expanded and occupy a more swanky of ce just a few paces along the street in the Maleny Community Centre. So, come and see us there.

Orangery Maleny Hosts Koala Habitat Fund-raiser

You don’t need any actual skills to join the Maleny Mens Shed, other than a need to have a guilt-free social activity in the company of other similar minded male persons.

Currently a large group are in the nal stages of setting up for our second shed erection. It has been a long path, but will be a great asset to the Mens Shed as space for a variety of interests is pressing.

COMPANY DIRECTORS BEWARE !

The days when Company Directors could plead ignorance of their Company’s affairs are long gone with the courts showing very little sympathy for Director who use ignorance as a defence. No longer can a Director argue that the appointment was a token appointment or one that he or she was pressured into accepting.

Directors are expected to: •

Be proactive and actively participate in the management of the Company. Total nonparticipation is impermissible;

•

Understand the role that a Director performs;

•

Ensure that the solvency of the Company can be monitored on a continuing basis.

Directors in particular have an obligation to prevent their Company from incurring debts that the Company cannot pay for.

A Director is also expected to be able to judge the ne line between solvency and insolvency and be ready to act to prevent the Company engaging in insolvent trading. However to be able to identify the ne line between solvent and insolvent trading is not an easy one.

It is the Company’s cash- ow which is of crucial importance and this is where the line between solvent and insolvent trading can be found. A Company is only solvent if it is able to pay all of its debts "as and when they fall due” – not just some of its debts. A Company that has a surplus of assets over liabilities can still be technically insolvent because of the lack of cash ow to cover its debts.

If it is alleged that a Director has contravened the Corporations Act in relation to insolvent trading the Director must be able to prove one of the following as defence: •

when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to expect that the Company was solvent and would remain solvent even if the debt was incurred; or

•

when the Company incurred the debt the Director had reasonable grounds to believe (and actually believed) that a subordinate in the Company was competent enough to provide the correct information about the Company’s solvency status and that the

Director relied upon this information; or

•

that when the debt was incurred the Director, because of illness or some other good reason, was unable to take part in the management of the company at that time; or

•

that the Director took all reasonable steps to stop the Company from incurring the debt.

It is clear that although Directors may delegate certain responsibilities to other subordinates in the Company, they are still obliged to have an active role in the management of the affairs of the Company. To fail in this obligation to properly discharge the duties of the of ce of a Director could lead to personal exposure to liability and in many cases signi cant sums of money.

Beerwah War on Waste Beerwah War on Waste has just sent off 6210 ( or 2.3 kg) of plastic bread tags to Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs in South Australia.

This fabulous organisation sells them to a recycler, and then uses the funds to purchase wheelchairs for disadvantaged people. This program ticks so many boxes.

Local collection points are Beerwah Kindy, Landsborough Community Kindergarten and the Maleny Salvation Army Family Store.

Beerwah War on Waste is always looking for more collection spots, particularly with a local shop, business or community organisation.

How do you dispose of used batteries?

Up until now most of us disposed of used batteries straight into the garbage and subsequently into land ll. In real terms Batteries should never be put in your household recycling or the garbage bin.

Australia has a national recycling scheme for batteries with thousands of recycling locations available across the country. In the Sunshine Coast Council area most Woolworths, ALDI and Battery World stores act as drop-off centres for PlanetArk. Now A national recycling scheme throughout Australia extracts the precious metals from the batteries which is reused to make other products.

Store used batteries in a cool, dry place, in a nonairtight glass container out of reach of children.

Landcare Queensland Awards 2022 Landcare Queensland links the corporate sector with Queensland's Landcare network. They also get community members and groups in touch with local Landcare Groups.

Local conservationist, Susie Duncan, founder of Hinterland Bush Links has recently been awarded a Highly Commended in the QLD Landcare Awards on the weekend.

Susie established Hinterland Bush Links in 2011 with a vision to connect, protect and restore the natural habitat in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Susie had a sound strategic plan based on the best available science to connect up the landscape in order to protect the wonderful biodiversity in our region.

Susie has been an inspirational advocate for connectivity conservation, engaging with local landholders and working with like-minded individuals and groups to protect our natural environment.

Breakthrough of Bribie Island - February 2022 In January 2022 cyclone Seth changed the northern end of Bribie Island forever. The massive swells buffeting the northern nger of Bribie Island's has split the island in two creating a dangerous passage that is now 450 metres wide with a depth of 1.5 metres at high tide and 1 metre at low tide.

Whilst the situation is dynamic, it was hard to predict what would happen in the future with respect to the new bar. It is thought that over time the previous northern part of Bribie Island could silt up and become of cially part of Caloundra and form a Caloundra spit.

Whilst this new opening causes amazement to newer Caloundra residents, older residents say that erosion of the area was a "natural occurrence” and shifting sands will always be a part of life for resident and visitors to the Golden Beach area.
