Caloundra Overpass with Bruce Highway finally opened After years of traf c disruptions nally the completion of the largest single infrastructure project ever undertaken on the Sunshine Coast the $932 million upgrade to the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Rd and Sunshine Motorway - has arrived. This project has seen the Bruce Highway upgraded to six lanes. This project was 80% funded by the Federal Government and 20% by the Queensland Government.
More than 9km of new active transport infrastructure have been provided for people walking and riding bikes. During the four years of this construction there were about 90 major switches of live traf c. Also more than seven metres of rainfall fell along with the additional dif culties brought on by the COVID-19 virus. This project, which includes Intelligent Transport Systems such as web/CCTV cameras, vehicle detection technology, variable speed limit signs and variable message signs ensures enhanced traf c safety and smoother traf c ows.
With the Sunshine Coast region being one of the fastest growing areas in Australia this upgrade is going to improve the experience for tourists to our region, boost our economy, help local businesses move staff and goods around quicker and help get locals home sooner and safer. This project included Australia’s rst Diverging Diamond Interchange at Caloundra Road along with environmental measures such as 49 fauna escape poles, a fauna rope ladder and 162 metres of fauna logs. It also included the planting of more than 245,000 plants, trees and shrubs.
