During the 1880’s most household cooking was done over an open fire. This required cooking pots to be robust such as this three legged pot cauldron which was commonly used for cooking stews or boiling vegetables.

Snakes in our area are on the increase

Have you noticed a recent increase in the number of snakes being found in residential areas. Queensland is home to about 120 species of snakes and about bout 65% of these are venomous.

In Queensland snakes are protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 and it is an offence to kill, injure or take snakes from the wild. Snakes usually prefer to retreat when encountered, but can become defensive if threatened. The lesson is “leave them alone” and they will quietly wander off.

When gardening it is safer to wear gloves, long pants and covered shoes and lift timber or sleepers away from you giving you the opportunity to see any snakes before you are in a dangerous position.

Female snakes can lay eggs to have anything between 3 and 40 young and leaves the young almost immediately after their birth.

The seasonal surge in snake numbers came as a result of the earlier start to the warmer months and the warmer temperatures. It won’t be too long before they start to hibernate for winter but can wake from hibernation and then return to sleep.

Australian Reptile Academy snake expert Dr Christina Zdenek warned inexperienced homeowners against interacting with snakes due to the increased risk of bites. People consistently underestimate the speed of Australian snakes and this has led to an increase in the number of people being bitten by snakes..

Queensland hospitals recorded 1,257 snake bite cases last year, up from 1,094 in 2023. You can decrease the number os snakes around your home by avoid creating a habitat for snakes by keeping a tidy, well-maintained yard and shed.

Driving

floodwaters

The RACQ advises owners of cars submerged in floodwaters are warned not to try starting them.

If your car got submerged, it's likely that the engine oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and even the petrol were contaminated.

Get your mechanic to check all of your car's fluids for water contamination and replace them as needed.

It is crucial that owners of flooded electric and hybrid vehicles did not start them as there was the possibility of electrocution or fire from short circuits.

The message always is “Don’t drive in floodwaters”!.

Need a Roadworthy Certificate?

Maleny Service Centre have a Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises and we know only too well what it takes to make your vehicle safe and roadworthy.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

Thanks To Emergency Service Volunteers!

“Couldn’t be without them in a time of need!”

Once again we recently saw the work done by the various Emergency Service volunteers as TC Alfred travelled across Australian shores. In the southern and western part of the continent saw volunteers attacking Hugh bush fires that were burning our communities. It appears that major disasters will continue to be felt across Australia.

One thing is obvious and that is that Australia could not do without the hundreds of thousands of volunteers who work in all sorts of organisations.

We regularly hear of the work done by the SES volunteers. Established in 1975, the Queensland State Emergency Service (SES) evolved from the former Queensland Civil Defence Organisation that had been in operation since 1961.

The Queensland Civil Defence Organisation was originally set up to deal with emergencies in the event of a nuclear war. In November 1973, a tornado caused considerable damage in the Brisbane area and the Civil Defence Organisation was activated to assist for the first time in disaster relief. Following this was the 1974 devastating flooding event which impacted Brisbane.

In 1975, the state government introduced the State CounterDisaster Organisation Act 1975 (SCDO Act), which was proclaimed on 11 December 1975. 'The SCDO Act established two organisations, the State Counter Disaster Organisation and the SES.

The SES was established because the government recognised the need for a centralised service that could support a response to natural disasters, as well as undertaking a civil defence role in the event of armed aggression against the Australian mainland. Thank you to all volunteers.

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% trueNo Bulls##t”

Truthful tells of a frightening experience that his neighbour Mick had.

Mick goes out into his backyard and is shocked to see a gorilla in one of the trees. He runs back inside and calls animal control.

Twenty minutes later an animal control officer shows up and sees that it's true. He thinks for a while, then goes back to his truck and returns with a baseball bat, a German Shepherd, a pair of handcuffs and a shotgun.

He tells Mick, “Here's what we’re gonna do. I'll take this here bat, climb up there, and knock him out of the tree.

Mick says, “Okay, but then what?”

The officer says, “When he hits the ground, Brutus here is gonna go for his testicles.”

Mick says, “Okay, but then what?”

The officer says, “Well, when he tries to cover them with his hands, you slap on these handcuffs.”

Mick agrees and the officer starts climbing. As he is climbing Mick yells up to him, “ Hey, what's the shotgun for?”

The office replies, “Oh, right. If by some chance I fall out of the tree, shoot Brutus.”

t’s a misconception that certain types of timber – such as hardwood don’t need treating or oiling. Hardwood still absorbs and releases moisture and is prone to the same splitting and cracking as softwood if it isn’t treated. If you’re tempted to skip oiling your timber deck, don’t – oiling provides essential protection from sun, wind and rain which can easily cause long-term damage. Decking Oil is best to ensure your deck both looks fantastic and stays structurally sound for many years to come.

What is the best technique to use when applying oil to your timber deck? It is best to apply your decking oil in long, steady strokes along each board or section – don’t rush the application, or the finish may be uneven, but don’t linger either. Think controlled, smooth movements, and use breaks in the timber boards as natural stopping points.

To oil a deck, brushes are great for fiddly areas, such as between expansion gaps, and so can be a helpful addition to other tools. However, by themselves, they can take a long time to get the job done. To work more quickly, consider a roller.

The oil will absorb on its own, so avoid going back and forth to rub the oil into the wood, or you may end up with marks once the oil dries

It is better to apply thin coats of oil as thick coats have problems with drying and the deck will stay “tacky” because the oil hasn’t dried. Decking oil should always be left to dry before re-coating.

Oil based decking oils are easiest to apply –and fastest to dry during warm weather. Making the deck oiling process quick and headache-free comes down to selecting the right tools and oils for the job. And with reapplication needed every six to twelve months, it’s well worth learning the fastest way to oil a timber deck without compromising on the results.

Buying & Selling Residential Property in Queensland

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

In the 21st century, we all enjoy the benefits of fast and efficient new technology. However, that speed and efficiency does come with some obligations and responsibilities, as cybercrime has also evolved and takes advantage of tech, so it is up to every one of us to be vigilant.

Law firms have put in place strict protocols when dealing with the electronic transfer of funds as that is a favourite target of hackers diverting funds away from the intended bank accounts, resulting in significant loss of money.

Before you electronically transfer any funds, you MUST first telephone the recipient, whether it be a law firm, Real Estate Agent, Broker and verbally confirm their bank account number, their bank

details and the amount of money to be transferred.

You should never open attachments, click on hyperlinks or download buttons in unexpected emails without first contacting the sender to check legitimacy, and you should contact your law practice if in any doubt about emails or other electronic communications that appear to have come from you. You should also give the same warnings to anyone else we know who is involved in the matter (e.g. the agent, broker, family member involved or any other third party) and who may also be involved in the transfer of money.

If you change your bank account details mid transaction be sure to let your law firm know

Web Address: http://eastonlawyers.com.au/

immediately, both in writing and verbally.

Provided we all follow these protocols strictly, we will make it extremely difficult for hackers to access our funds without our consent.

Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used our donation could go to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects.

Have you ever travelled to a country town and visited the local cemetery?

If so, have you ever considered the importance of that cemetery for the telling about the history, tragic events and the people who created the history of that district?

country cemetery holds a unique and invaluable place in the history of a country town, serving as both a resting place for past generations and a reflection of the town’s cultural, social, and historical evolution.

On a recent damp and cloudy day when visiting the Witta cemetery to say farewell to another patriarch of the Maleny district it occurred that there was much more to a cemetery than just a final resting place.

Whilst it might appear to some that a cemetery was a tragic place to others it might reveal a lot more. Some country cemeteries, normally found on the outskirts of the country town may not appear attractive, others set in quiet and tranquil bushland radiates an ambience of days gone by and surrounded by native trees and wildlife, making them places of reflection and tranquility, as is the Witta Cemetery.

These cemeteries are more than burial sites; they are archives of personal and collective histories, revealing the lives, struggles, and contributions of those who built and shaped the community.

One of the most significant roles of a country cemetery is its connection to the town’s early settlers and pioneers. The

headstones and burial records often date back to the town’s founding, offering insights into the people who first established farms, businesses, schools, and churches. Many of these cemeteries contain the graves of war veterans, civic leaders, and local families who played key roles in the town’s development. The names etched into the stones often reappear on street signs, public buildings, and local landmarks, reinforcing the link between past and present.

Country cemeteries also serve as a window into the social history of a town. The style of grave markers, inscriptions, and epitaphs reflect the cultural values and religious beliefs of different time periods. Some cemeteries feature grand monuments dedicated to prominent figures, while others highlight the hardships of the past with simple, unmarked graves. Epidemics, mining disasters, droughts, and other historical events can be traced through the sudden clusters of burials in certain time frames, providing tangible evidence of the town’s struggles and resilience.

In addition to historical significance, a country cemetery fosters a strong sense of community identity and continuity.

Families often have multiple generations buried in the same cemetery, reinforcing ties to the land and to each other. For descendants, visiting the graves of ancestors fosters a deep connection to their heritage, strengthening the sense of belonging.

Cemeteries also serve as gathering places during memorials, anniversaries, and community events, preserving traditions and honouring those who came before.

They serve not only as historical sites but also as green spaces that contribute to the town’s landscape and environment.

Ultimately, a country cemetery is a vital part of a country town’s heritage, telling stories that might otherwise be lost. By preserving and respecting these cemeteries, towns ensure that their history remains alive for future generations to learn from and appreciate.

Local cemeteries often can tell the story of what a community is like today. A walk through that cemetery can turn ones memories back in time as names of past friends and foes are seen on the headstones. One can only reminisce about the happy times of the past whilst realising that we will all reside there someday!.

NEARLY 200,000 sandbags were collected from SES locations across the Sunshine Coast in preparation for Tropical Cyclone Alfred. With the severe weather now behind us what to do with those sandbags.

You can use the sand to top dress your lawn, then place the bag in your general waste bin or keep it handy for future use. The bags may last up to 12 months. Properly dispose of the SES sandbags to ensure they don’t go to waste.

bout 2 years ago my wife and I were on a cruise through the western Mediterranean aboard a Princess liner.

At dinner we noticed an elderly lady sitting alone the rail of the grand stairway in the main dining room. I also noticed that all the staff, ships officers, waiters, busboys, etc., all seemed very familiar with this lady.

I asked our waiter who the lady was, expecting to be told that she owned the line, but he said he only knew that she had been on board for the last four cruises, back to back.

As we left the dining room one evening I caught her eye and stopped to say hello. We chatted and I said, "I understand you've been on this ship for the last four cruise". She replied, "Yes, that's true."

I stated, "I don't understand" and she replied, without a pause, "It's cheaper than a nursing home”.

So, there will be no nursing home in my future. When I get old and feeble, I am going to get on a Princess Cruise Ship. The average cost for a nursing home is $200 per day.

$65 a day forgratuities which will only be $10 per day.

I will have as many as 10 meals a day if I can waddle to the restaurant, or I can have room service which means I can have breakfast in bed every day of the week.

Princess has as many as three swimming pools, workout room, free washers and dryers, and shows every night. They have free toothpaste and razors, and free soap and shampoo.

They will even treat you like a customer, not a patient. An extra $5 worth of tips will have the entire staff scrambling to help you. I will get to meet new people every 7 or 14 days. Is the T.V. broken? Light bulb needs changing? Need to have the mattress replaced? No Problem!

They will fix everything and apologise for your inconvenience.

Clean sheets and towels every day, and you don't even have to ask for them.

9

If you fall in the nursing home and break a hip you are on Medicare; if you fall and break a hip on the Princess ship they will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life.

Now hold on for the best! Do you want to see South America, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, or name where you want to go?

Princess will have a ship ready to go so don't look for me in a nursing home, just call shore to ship.

P.S. And don't forget, when you die, they just dump you over the side at no charge !

Maleny SES looking for volunteers

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

The Witta Cemetery, located on Witta Road in Witta, Queensland, was established in 1893 and is a final resting place for many of the first German families who settled in the area around 1887. The area was originally known as Teutoburg. The town was renamed Witta in 1916 during World War I due to anti-German sentiment, with "Witta" which is believed to being a corruption of the Kabi word "wetya" meaning dingo.
