“We all want to believe we will be safe and cared for as we get older. But this does not always happen. What can we do to ensure the rights and safety of ourselves and our loved ones?” Said QUOTA spokesperson, Val France.

There will be a short film in the form of a drama outlining issues for older people and their legal rights, including Enduring Powers of Attorneys and Wills, followed by a complimentary morning tea.

After this a question-and-answer session will be hosted the Suncoast Community Legal Service, Representatives from Centacare Domestic Violence Service, Relationships Australia Elder Abuse team, & QPS Vulnerable Persons Unit.

All are welcome to come along to learn what you can do to ensure your rights, and those of your loved ones, to safety in our advanced years. Bring all your questions that you would liked answered by the experts.

T.C. Alfred has now passed. Now, what to do with all those sand bags
Your unused sandbags can still be put to good use, or you can return them to a disposal location.

Close to 200,000 sandbags were collected by residents from SES locations across the Sunshine Coast in preparation for Tropical Cyclone Alfred. And for that preparation, Sunshine Coast Council and emergency services thank you.

We are now urging residents to put their unused SES sandbags to good use at home by topdressing your lawns, giving them to a neighbour, family or friends who can do the same, or if that’s not possible, taking them to a sandbag disposal location where they will be used around the region.

Sunshine Coast Local Disaster Management Group Chair and Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli commended the community for proactively preparing for Cyclone Alfred.

“We know that many people have unused SES sandbags and we are calling on our community to put them to work.

“When the time comes to dispose of sandbags, please use the sand to top dress your lawn then place the bag in your general waste bin or keep it handy for future use. The bags may last up to 12 months.

“From 7am to 3pm each day until Friday March 14 residents can take their SES sandbags to a number of Council-staffed locations between Caloundra, Nambour and Coolum so we can reuse the sand where it’s needed most.

“Some sites, which do not have weekend sporting activities, will also open Saturday and/or Sunday.”

Sandbag disposal locations are at:

• Meridan Fields Sports Complex - Entry via Western gate off Meridan Way (until 3pm Friday - no weekend access)

• Eudlo Rural Fire Brigade (until 3pm Friday - no weekend access)

• Caloundra Indoor Stadium - Southern side of the end carpark (until 3pm Friday and on Sunday only - no Saturday access)

• Parklakes Sports Complex, Bli Bli (until 3pm Friday and on Sunday only - no Saturday access)

• Nambour Showgrounds - Enter via main entrance off Coronation Avenue (including Saturday and Sunday)

• Palmview Estate - Flintwood Crescent Park (Including Saturday and Sunday)

Please ensure you bring appropriate tools to safely open your sandbags.

We are unable to take sandbags collected from outlets other than SES as the contents cannot be verified as safe to use across our fields.

Mayor Natoli also encouraged the community to keep an eye on community social media pages as there were many residents and businesses advising they would collect sandbags as well.

Old Fig Tree is turning up its leaves

The historic fig tree which resides on the Maleny District Sports club leased area near the 5th Light. Horse Regiment Maleny Troop HQ is showing signs of old age.

The historic fig tree is believed to be over 200 years old. These trees normally are able to live for between 150 and 200 years.

The Sunshine Coast Council has taken the necessary cuttings to propagate so tat a new tree can replace this fine old lady!

Driving in floodwaters - just not worth it!

it’s been a tough drive and you’re within minutes of the comforts of home when you’re confronted with what looks like a relatively shallow and steady flow of water across the road. Just what to do?

Modern cars with electrically powered windows and locks are almost impossible to escape from once water finds its way into wiring and motors, disabling switchgear and pressing on bodywork. Still waters can run deep and the flow in front of you could pack a punch of a tonne per metric metre, which can tear away the road surface and result in a much deeper gully than is apparent.

It is just not worth the risk or the cost.

Need a Roadworthy Certificate?

Maleny Service Centre have a Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises and we know only too well what it takes to make your vehicle safe and roadworthy.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

Juvenile Crime

“Is this stupidity or plain selfishness”

We were all warned well in advance about the coming of Tropical Cyclone Alfred and the possible locality and severity. Seas had mountainous waves and were extremely dangerous for surfers and swimmers and boat owners. All people were directed not tented the water because of these dangers.

It was only the first day when three people on a jet ski at Noosa failed to take heed of the warnings and just had to “go into the water for no urgent reason”. On getting into trouble and unable to make it back to shore they summonsed help from emergency service personnel. They were not the only people who decided to ignore warnings and subsequently “got into difficulties” and had to be rescued. There were numerous people rescued. Even after warnings not to drive vehicles into floodwaters many people did. One person who foolishly drove his vehicle into floodwaters lost his life when the 4WD utility was washed off the road. Surfing during cyclonic weather is an act of extreme foolishness that not only endangers the surfer’s life but also puts rescuers at risk. Cyclones bring violent winds, massive waves, and unpredictable currents that even the most experienced surfers cannot navigate safely. The sheer force of the ocean during such storms can easily drag surfers out to sea or smash them against rocks and debris.

Moreover, cyclonic weather often leads to strong rip currents, which can pull surfers far from shore, making it nearly impossible to swim back. The chaotic sea conditions also mean that even the most skilled lifeguards or rescue teams may struggle to save anyone in distress. Emergency responders have more urgent tasks during a cyclone, such as helping evacuate residents and responding to flooding, and they should not have to risk their own lives for reckless thrill-seekers.

Beyond personal danger, surfing during cyclonic weather sets a bad example for others, especially young or inexperienced surfers who might attempt to imitate such reckless behaviour. No wave is worth risking one’s life, and the ocean is far too powerful to be challenged during a cyclone. True surfers respect the sea and understand when it is time to stay on land. One cannot say that they did not know the dangers as those dangers are pointed out on a regular basis when there is inclement weather about. Ones own senses should be enough to warn oneself!

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true -

Truthful tells us that Sister Mary Ann, who worked for a home health agency, was out making her rounds visiting homebound patients when she ran out of gas. Fortunately, an Ampol station was just a block away. She walked to the station to borrow a gas can and buy some gas. The attendant told her that the only gas can he owned had been loaned out, but she could wait until it was returned.

Since Sister Mary Ann was on the way to see a patient, she decided not to wait, and walked back to her car. She looked for something in her car that she could fill with gas, and spotted the bedpan she was taking to the patient. Always resourceful, Sister Mary Ann carried the bedpan to the station, filled it with fuel, and carried the full bedpan back to her car.

As she was pouring the gas into her tank, two Baptist ladies watched from across the street. One of them turned to the other and said, "If it starts, I'm turning Catholic."

Preparing your deck before re - oiling

reparation is the key to achieving the best possible results for whatever it is you are doing. The same goes for timber decking! Whether it’s a new or existing timber deck, a little prep work prior to coating will ensure that the job is done right!

What are tannins?

Hardwood decking has tannins that are natural properties of the timber itself and are stored within the grain of the timber.

When water or moisture spreads through the timber it will bring these tannins back to the surface causing dark, brownish stains. It is vital to clean timber decking before applying any coating to ensure the tannins are removed. Note that the only real way to effectively remove the tannins is to “weather” the timber for approximately 4-6 weeks prior to washing/cleaning the deck using Oxalic Acid Crystals.

How do I clean my deck??

Oxalic Acid Crystals are a concentrated, heavy-duty cleaner which is effective in removing light stains and blemishes from timber. Simply dissolve in 100ml to 1 litre of hot water and using a hard scrubbing brush, wash the timber decking. Leave for approximately 15 mins and rinse off thoroughly with a high pressure hose, making sure to remove all traces of the solution. Allow to completely dry.

For new timber, then apply 3 coats of a quality Universal Decking Oil with a roller or decking oil floor brush. or

applicator. Quality decking oils are formulated to PRESERVE, PROTECT, & RESTORE. It is important to achieve optimum results by getting right into the gaps.

For existing and previously coated decking, follow the cleaning process mentioned above, although the timber may require some sanding prior to applying 1-2 coats of decking oil. It is important to apply light coats of oil as oil dries from the inside out. By applying too thick a coat means the oil doesn’t dry properly and remains “tacky when walking on it”.

Oil based decking oils have been around for a very long time. This is because they penetrate very well. the operative word being PENETRATE. They go deep into the timber keeping it hydrated and lubricated versus coated in layers on top providing excellent protection from the inside out.

Oil based decking oils also have far less chance of peeling, provide an even finish with less chance of lap marks and are so easy to use and require hardly any effort.

NOTE: If you have a solvent or water-based polyurethane coating your floor will require a full sand and complete clean before any re-coat.

How to Remove Mould with Wet & Forget

• Mix 1:5 (1 part Wet & Forget with 5 parts water) in a garden sprayer.

• Saturate the affected area with the diluted Wet & Forget. ...

• Leave, and let Wet & Forget do the work for you!

• Re-treat once a year, or at the first sign of re-growth.

Talk to us about cabinets custom made to size!

After T.C. Alfred what next with kitchen cabinets?

A flooded kitchen can be a disaster. Not only is it a huge inconvenience, but if water damage is not dealt with quickly and correctly, it can lead to mould and other serious problems.

Before starting any repairs, it’s important to carefully inspect your kitchen to understand the full extent of the damage. You might find that some parts of your kitchen can be saved, while others may need to be completely replaced.

Water damage will usually show up in one of the following ways: Warping and expansion of the wood, peeling of the outside layer of the cabinet (delamination) or the painted surface of the wood. Water stains or changes in the colour of the wood are other signs of water damage..

Water damaged cabinets can typically be repaired, depending on the amount of water experienced and how quickly action was taken.

If your cabinets are wet, empty any flooded cabinets then dry them out as quickly as possible. You can do this by opening the doors and drawers and using a fan to blow low to medium heated air inside.

It is important that mould is properly treated

If the cabinets are severely damaged, they may need replacement.

Buying & Selling Residential Property in Queensland The contract With Trove

Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

The standard contract most often used in Queensland has been developed by the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) and the Queensland Law Society (QLS).

Usually, a real estate agent will prepare a standard REIQ contract for you to sign.

Be sure to get advice before you sign – send the draft contract and disclosure material to your solicitor to make sure they are correct and that they meet your needs.

The standard REIQ contract cannot deal with the individual circumstances of every transaction.

If necessary, your solicitor can add special clauses to the contract, for example the:

purchase may depend on the sale of your existing property; property is not subject to flooding; and sellers have obtained all necessary statutory approvals and complied with those approvals.

Buying a residential property is a major financial transaction for most people. So, it’s vital you seek the advice of your solicitor before you sign any contract. With increased numbers of residential properties changing hands in Queensland and a recently revised standard residential contract we thought this was a great time to review a few residential contract basics.

Over the next few weeks, we will review the fundamental issues in

We will see how Monday 10th is looking and if we deem necessary, we will close the office and ensure that our team is home safely and can work remotely.

Please take care out there as the weather is looking to get a bit rough. Remember; “do not drive through old water as its most likely leads to death”.

As described by the Oxford English wokeism is a noun and means:

“Progressive or left-wing attitudes or practices, esp. those opposing social injustice or discrimination, that are viewed as doctrinaire, self-righteous, pernicious, or insincere.”

No one seems able to offer an official and consistent definition of what it actually means.

eginning in the United States of America in the 2010s, wokeism came to be used to refer to a broader awareness of social inequalities such as racial injustice, sexism, and denial of LGBTQ rights. In recent years, Australia also has witnessed the rapid expansion of “wokeism”—a movement rooted in progressive ideologies that emphasise social justice, identity politics, and political correctness. While initially intended to promote inclusivity and equality, the movement has evolved into an often rigid and authoritarian force that threatens free speech, traditional values, and national unity.

In 2025, the dangers of wokeism in Australia are becoming increasingly evident, impacting institutions, public discourse, and the everyday lives of Australians.

One of the most significant dangers of wokeism in Australia is its impact on free speech. The movement frequently employs cancel culture to silence dissenting voices, creating an

environment where individuals fear expressing opinions that do not align with progressive narratives. Academics, journalists, and public figures have been fired, deplatformed, or socially ostracised for holding views that were once considered mainstream.

This suppression of debate stifles intellectual discourse and prevents the exchange of diverse perspectives that are essential for a healthy democracy.

The influence of wokeism in schools and universities is profound, with curricula increasingly focusing on critical race theory, gender ideology, and decolonisation narratives. While some elements of these discussions are important, their dominance in the classroom comes at the expense of foundational education in subjects such as mathematics, science, and history.

Additionally, students and teachers who question these ideas risk being labeled as bigots

or reactionaries, creating a culture of fear in educational institutions.

Woke ideology has also infiltrated Australia’s legal and corporate sectors, leading to policies that prioritise diversity quotas over merit and competence.

Workplace sensitivity training, mandatory pronoun usage, and corporate virtue-signalling have become commonplace.

Employees who refuse to conform to these new standards may face disciplinary action or job loss, raising concerns about personal freedoms and professional integrity. Meanwhile, businesses that do not publicly align with progressive causes risk boycotts and reputational damage.

Rather than fostering inclusivity, wokeism often exacerbates social divisions by emphasising identity over shared national values.

Australians are increasingly encouraged to view themselves through the lens of race, gender, or sexual orientation rather than

Continued Next Page

Continued from previous Page

as individuals with common interests. This trend risks deepening societal fractures and creating resentment between different demographic groups. Instead of uniting Australians under shared principles, wokeism promotes a culture of victimhood and grievance.

Remember just before Australia Day 2025 the Australian Venue Co. hospitality group announced it would be banning Australia Day celebrations at its more than 200 pubs across the nation on 26 January. The reason for the ban, according to the group, was that, ‘Australia Day is a day that causes sadness for some members of our community’. This action caused such a backlash from the various hotel customers boycotted those hotels. The result was that company had to back down and relents s not to have their business decimated.

A similar incident occurred when Woolworths stores refused to stock Australia Day merchandise so as to not upset one action of the Australian community. Woolworths chief executive, Brad Banducci was forced to resign. QANTAS Chief Executive, Mr Alan Joyce faced a similar episode when he pushed his personal

beliefs by repainting some QANTAS planes.

What these businesses and others like them did not take into effect was that there are far more mainstream Australians out there than there are inner-city activists. This will be an important consideration for federal politicians to take into account as Australia heads into the 2025 federal election. This rewriting of history can erode national identity, leaving future generations disconnected from their roots and uncertain about their cultural inheritance.

Woke activism often targets traditional Australian values, branding them as relics of an oppressive past . Public holidays, historical figures, and national symbols are frequently scrutinised, with calls to rename, remove, or cancel elements of the country’s heritage.

Reasonably recently its has become fashionable to attempt to change the past history, good or bad of Australia by removing statues of people involved in our early history or changing place names after generations have known those places by the replaced name..

In conclusion, wokeism in Australia in 2025 poses significant dangers to free speech,

education, corporate integrity, social unity, and cultural heritage.

A lack of tolerance for differing views will create dividing lines between families, communities and ultimately the country, While social progress is important, the authoritarian nature of woke ideology threatens the foundational principles of democracy and individual freedom, this appears to be so in Australian Universities. This mis resulting in students becoming more fluent in wokeness and less of a “full bottle” own their primary subjects..

If left unchecked, it could reshape Australia into a society where fear of speaking freely overrides rational debate, and identity politics replaces meritocracy and common sense.

Did you Know? What do you know about Australia’s first computer?

Under the leadership of Dr. Trevor Pearcey, Maston Beard and Geoff Hill, construction began on the pioneering CSIR Mk1 computer in the late 1940s.

On 14 November 1949, the CSIR Mk1 computer, developed by the CSIRO ran its initial test program. It was the first in Australia to do so and only the fourth stored-program computer in the world.

It was a massive machine, filling a room the size of a double garage and consuming enough electricity to power a small suburb..

How much battery power do I need for my home?

Purchasing a battery is a big decision and you want to make sure you make the right choice – especially when we’re talking about battery size. At Redback, we get it. It’s difficult to know what battery will work best for your home and your lifestyle.

We always recommend talking with an accredited installer in your area, as they’re fully trained to look at all your individual needs and advise on the correct sized system.

RedEarth’s PowerOasis is a fully integrated, ready-to-run and modular Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) catering for the niche 50-400kVA power range. It has the option to use both the inbuilt solar PV MPPT or AC-coupled solar PV inverters can be added.

Why shut down solar in a storm? Solar power safety in severe weather events

During a natural disaster, your solar panels will continue to produce electricity even if the mains power has been disconnected. Combined with flood water or storm damage, a live solar PV system can pose a serious electric shock risk to anyone who enters your property.

Wind can cause uplift when it makes its way between the roof and the solar panels, causing the panels to rise up or break free. Proficient installers will ensure the correct installation of quality solar panels, you won't have to worry about uplift until in the case of really severe weather. C E Solutions will ensure a proper instillation.

Home battery sales are rising with volatile power prices

Global Recycling Day 2025

The 2025 Global Recycling Day is on March 18th. It iis a recycling initiative that encourages us to look at our trash in a new light.

It is all about giving new life to old materials, conserving natural resources, and making a real impact on sustainability.

One thing we don’t really think about recycling is the medicine blister pack that many of use. Well, now they can be recycled.

Chemist Warehouse and Pharmacycle have teamed up with Kenvue, a pure-play consumer health company to roll out an Australian blister pack recycling initiative nation-wide.

After a successful trial of the initiative in late 2023 across 100 Chemist Warehouse pharmacies in Victoria, the program is now available and the aluminium is reused as an aluminium de-oxident and used in the making of steel.

The plastic is used by a Victorian company in the making of amongst other things, PVC decking and fencing.

The blister packs can be returned to Chemist Warehouse and simply placed in the provided blue and gold containers. Already more than 60 million packs have been collected and reprocessed. With over two BILLION blister packs used in Australia each year this recycling target can only grow.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..
