Adaptive Acoustic ‘Adaptive Acoustic’ is a collaborative project aimed at exploring the cross disciplinary possibilities between architecture and artificial intelligence. This project specifically focuses on the sound qualities and architectural design of concert halls.

We began by considering how visual appeal in architectural design may overshadow other qualities through which architecture may be experienced.

One such undervalued and often overlooked quality is sound. With this project, we sought to explore the power of sound within the spaces we design.

Our goal was to create a platform for architectural/ acoustic experimentation. Based on an initial data set of 2000 concert hall interiors, we trained a custom neural network to generate its own interpre-

tation of acoustic spaces by adapting simple 3D volumes into acoustic forms.

Still in its early stages in terms of devising a complete acoustic/architectural solution for concert halls and acoustic music spaces, we found our AI-driven platform to be particularly intriguing for early stages of concert hall design.

The project exposed us to a series of unexpected acoustic/formal solutions that we may never have considered otherwise. The possible sounds and qualities of these spaces captivate, inspire us, and have the potential to further connect architecture to an evolving culture of music, musical performance, and audience experience.

Data Sets Two data sets were used to train our neural network: One made up of 2000 3D models of concert hall interiors and the other made up of numerical data such as volume, reverberation time, etc. associated with each of the 2000 3D models.

Neural Network This diagram depicts our method for achieving our results. Two sets of input information (Input Mesh + Acoustic Values) are combined and calculated through our trained neural network (Graph CNN), resulting in the output of a new acoustic mesh representing the interior form of a concert hall.

Site Choices Our site selection intentionally deals with different volumetric constraints in order to see how the neural network will perform in the creation of acoustic forms in unusual or difficult spaces.

Result Matrix 44 selected result models from the Graph Convolutional Neural Network. 22 of which are generated from the small site, and 22 from the large site. We vary the input mesh shape, mesh count, acoustic parameters, etc. in an attempt to produce a wide range of outputs.

Parameter Diagram Using a control variate method we rank the factors impacting the results of our Graph CNN: Mesh form, mesh count and volume have the greatest influences. Silhouette image, height, width, length to width ratio, and height to width ratio have the second greatest impact. Camera angle also affects the outcome to some extent. Seat count, reverberation time, acoustical absorption area, volume per seat and absorption coefficient have the smallest influence on the output mesh, as the slight differences are difficult to pick up right away.

Simulation Matrix 44 results from Ecotect’s acoustic simulation software. The performance of sound waves is visualized through simulated particles. A range of successful and unsuccessful results can be seen, demonstrating how sound travels within the forms generated by our Graph Convolutional Neural Network.

Style Transfer We used an AI-driven style transfer technique to combine sections from existing concert halls with sections from our AI-generated forms to project an additional layer of information that would help us imagine what the interiors of our newly generated concert halls may begin to look like.

2000 Concert Halls in Plan We used plans and sections from the book “Concert Halls and Opera Houses� by Leo Beranek to build an initial dataset of 100 3D models, which was then expanded to 2000 through a series of transformations.

Party Animals! ‘Party Animals!’ explores the intersection between co-housing, permaculture, and a diversity of community players’ needs. Located on a site directly adjacent to the Dequindre Cut: a park in Detroit, MI.

Featured in the 2020 Taubman College Student Show.

The massing for the project is based on decentralized co-housing. This model allowed us to accommodate dwellings for humans, a variety of gardening typologies, and dwellings for animals in clusters gathered around steel and glass winter garden structures which serve as central vertical circulation.

These vertical circulation towers offer communal places in which residents can intermingle, tend to plants, and let their pets spend time outside their units during the colder months.

Vertical Neighborhood Urban life promises economic mobility, entertainment and social life unequaled in low-density communities. Yet as the global population continues moving to cities in droves, many will also experience feelings of isolation. As people change jobs more and more frequently, they also move within or away from the city as their situations change.

Technology offers the chance to make virtual connections in lieu of physical social interaction.

High-density architecture reinforces social alienation through a lack of effective public space.

present a visual connection between the building and its neighborhood, while also offering residents spaces for casual interaction and mingling. By puncturing the urban street wall, Vertical Neighborhoods promote connections between residents and their neighborhood as well as among residents themselves.

This studio was done in a collaborative effort between students and Vinci Construction (a large developer based in France). The first half of the semester was dedicated to a studio-wide research project with the aim of understanding precedents, history, future, contemporary trends, and logistics involved in prefabricated architecture. The results of the research were collected in a self-published book: “New Generics: vol. 1�.

Secret Sky

Alibi Studio

“‘Secret Sky’ is the structural reworking of the barn to allow the sky to enter and pass through the building. By day, the barn is noticeable for its patterning and intricacy and a massive cut with light pouring through it. At night, the work glows from within acting as a lantern in the landscape and casting long shadows on the ground that surrounds it, giving it back to the sky.” (Catie Newell)

of my responsibilities included working through the design of the exterior/interior wooden cladding, material selection, detailing, and construction.

‘Secret Sky’ is located in Kinde, Michigan and is the third installment in an ongoing project that aims to preserve and transform old barns in the Port Austin area into art objects.

This project was completed during a period working for Alibi Studio. Entering the project as most of the structural work was completed, I worked in a team with Catie Newell, Charlie O’Geen, and Julia Jeffs to help push this project to completion. Some Type Firm Project Lead Involvement Date

Kissing Sparrows

plusFARM

The result of a collaboration between 16 students and 3 instructors who participated in a 3-week design-build exercise in Buffalo, NY.

City’: a site in Buffalo, NY, formerly a used as a grain refinery, currently being re-purposed as a public art/event space.

Students worked together with instructors to develop, prototype, and build an installation using textured light-gauge stainless steel. Designs were first explored at a smaller scale in paper, then prototyped at a 1 to 1 scale in steel. The final design features individual, hand-rolled steel sheets (sparrows), connected and arrayed across a unified system.

The Project was later adapted for a competition exploring previously built works at the installation scale. Kissing Sparrows was selected as a finalist in the “Bigger than a Breadbox Smaller than a Building” competition (2015).

Kiss Each Sparrow is laser cut, hand rolled, bent, and mechanically fastened. The sparrows are connected to one another at the tail to form rows. The rows are then staggered, closely nested, and mechanically fastened together.

Cocoon Section Configuration Moving forward, we discovered that system was not completely ridged, and allowed for some flexibility. Standing up on its side, the system created a wall. Rolled over on its side, the system created a cocoon-like form. The final result was imagined to be a canopy/enclosure/kissing booth.

Bigger than a Breadbox This version of Kissing Sparrows seen in plan, section, and perspective was proposed as an installation at the BSA Space in Boston. The sparrow canopy appears to create a sense of motion in the form of a wave.

5 Parts for 555

‘5 Parts for 555’ is a project that considers architecture as a series of parts that operate at different scales towards different objectives, “The goal is to show how every effort around architecture also makes an impact – not just the design of a building itself.”

The project engaged a Detroit-based non-profit organization called 555 Arts and defined a center of focus in their ongoing renovation of the former Banner Cigar Company building. We designed a series of full scale architectural parts that connected the building’s piecemeal transformation with a possible future vision, while also weaving the building’s Type Organizer Project Lead Team Involvement Date

existing tectonic elements with 555’s own production of metal art at its on-site foundry. Collaborating with a group of artists in residence at 555, we custom-built a series of molds that allowed each aluminum part to retain a hard-edged “controlled” portion and a soft-edged “overflow” portion that played with the idea of imperfect standardization.

Lastly, a large scale physical model distilled the Banner building into relational elements open to reinterpretation and reconfiguration. (Peter Yi)

Banner Cigar Company Building The building, owned by 555 Arts, is currently under renovation and will one day serve as a gallery and art space for artists in residence. Many of the designs for our standard/ non-standard parts were inspired by elements already existing in the building such as column footings and headers.

Floating Stair

Kin & Company and Louis Lim

A custom designed architectural stair for a townhouse in Brooklyn, NY. The client requested a “floating” stair designed with strong emphasis on wooden treads/risers with minimal elements in metal.

The stair’s appearance is meant to be light and effortless. Thin treads and risers, made of light wood, are the most visually present. Steel structural components were routed and nestled in and behind the stair. A blackened steel stringer casts a subtle shadow along the edge where the stair meets the wall.

Fabrication The metal stringer was laser cut from a 3/8� thick steel sheet. It was cut and installed in two parts for ease of transportation; joined on site using standard mechanical fasteners. A small prototype was also cut in order to test the system ahead of time.

1/2� thick steel angles were cut to size and welded to the stringer. Structural analysis was done ahead of time by a contracted structural engineer. The welded assembly was then blacked with a black oxide patina.

Blackened Steel hand rail and wooden treads/risers were also prefabricated and installed on site.

Thin Series

Kin & Company

The ‘Thin Series’ is a collection of tables and chairs so spare that they look as though they might collapse - but don’t.

- delving into experiments with tempering metal, patina processes, as well as mirrorizing, and powder coating.

At first glance, the furniture looks so delicate that you may be apprehensive of breaking it. The pieces ask participants for a little bit of trust; that something won’t bend, break, or collapse under a persons weight. Once planted, you find the material to be surprisingly strong!
