SITE AND LOCATION ANALYSIS

Nashville, Tennessee, located along the Cumberland River in central Tennessee is a central hub for music, healthcare, and banking and is home to numerous universities. Nicknamed, Music City, Nashville is the center for country music, but is home to all genres. Having such a large entertainment scene, Nashville has one of the fastest growing tourism markets in the country. Some 57,000 jobs are tied to the hospitality industry and the number of visitors to the city grows tremendously every year. Davidson County, in which Nashville is located, led Tennessee in tourism revenue in 2015, generating $5.7 billion in tourism alone. A large percentage of these visitors is made up by groups visiting the city together, and the city is especially a destination for bachelor and bachelorette parties. Because of such a large demand, hotel rooms in the city can become very expensive. The goal of Marathon Place is to create a hotel-hostel hybrid in which visitors have the option of a traditional lodging experience, or a hostel like experience, perfect for groups traveling together. Numerous public spaces within the hotel foster interaction and communication between visitors, and locals, fostering a community focused atmosphere that creates a unique lodging experience from other options in the area.

Marathon Place is a hotel-hostel hybrid located in Nashville, Tennessee that aims to provide a different type of lodging experience to Nashville visitors.

The hotel is located in the old Marathon Motorworks building, as part of Marathon Village.

Marathon Motorworks was a large car manufacturer in the early 1900’s, also known as the brass era for the brass fixtures used in the vehicles. The building was eventually abandoned and then purchased by a developer in Nashville who is slowly renovating the space. The goal of the space is to provide lodging for groups visiting music city, and to create a space in which guests interact with each other, as well as the city outside. Marathon Place provides a luxury, but laid back lodging experience to different group sizes and visitors. Marathon Village is only a short distance from downtown Nashville in an up-and-coming part of the city.

MARATHON MOTOR WORKS HISTORY

Southern Engine and Boiler Works begins production of their first automobile, designed by engineer William H. Collier.

The factory building is built in Nashville as The Phoenix Cotton Mill.

Sherman Manufacturing Company starts in Jackson, Tennessee.

Sherman Manufacturing Company becomes incorporated as Southern Engine and Boiler Works in Jackson, Tennessee.

By 1911, five different automobile models were being offered.

1911

Nashville investor Augustus H. Robinson purchases the automobile division and moves the company to the cotton building in Nashville and renamed the company “Marathon� in honor of the 1904 Olympics.

After a string of management issues Marathon Motor Works ceased building cars but continued to produce parts.

1913

The Marathon Motor Works buildings sit vacant and become very run down.

1918 1914

The factory buildings are restored to become a mixed use space in an up=and=coming part of the city.

1986 1918 - 1986

1986 - 2016

Marathon Motor Works ceases to build parts.

By 1913, twelve automobile models were being produced.

Nashville resident Barry Walker purchases the Marathon factory buildings.

CASE STUDIES HOSTEL CONII ESTUDIO ODS QUARTEIRA, PORTUGAL This hostel, located in Portugal, is the renovation of an old housing building for workers from the local fish canning industry.

The hostel offers traditional hostel style accommodations, as well as private rooms.

The simple design of the space focuses almost entirely on the function of the space.

JUGENDHERBERGE BASEL SEBASTIANPITZ ARCHITEKT BASEL, SWIZTERLAND Sitting in a very old part of Basel, this hostel is a slightly more upscale hybrid hotel hostel. The goal of the designers was to create spaces for interaction between different age groups within the space. Hall style showers create a dorm-like feel that fosters interaction even in the upstairs hallways.

CONCEPT

The concept for the design comes from looking at the elements and principles of music theory, specifically form and texture. Form and texture are often referred to as the “architecture of music� and can be interpreted as elements of the built environment. Musical form refers to the overall structure of a piece of music. This structure is typically represented by a pattern of letters such as ABACB. These letters represent different parts of the song such as the chorus, verses, or bridge. Musical texture refers to the number of layers, as well as the type of layers used in a piece of music and how the layers are related. These layers are composed of the different sounds within a song such as the sound of a guitar layered with the sound of a voice. To further develop the design, graphic notation examples of music were studied. Graphic notation is the visual representation of music theory concepts and these visual translations of parts of music are translated into built environment components. Using graphic notation, and musical form and texture, the design creates a space that is functional and aesthetically pleasing, while conveying the layering, rhythm, repetition, pattern, and dynamic of music. These elements prove a close relationship between design of the built environment and music theory, as many of the elements are the same. The space interprets these ideas as a visual, built concept.

PLAN PARTI DEVELOPMENT The development of the plan parti began by looking at the basic structure and form of a song and the different types of forms.

Next, four randomly selected songs from different genres were analyzed. The first listen to each song analyzed the form, while the second analyzed the texture of the song. These texture diagrams were overlapped to find common moments across different genres of popular music. When flipped on itself, this diagram over overlapping textures was overlaid on the plan of the building to reveal three main moments within the plan that relate to the beginning, climax, and end of a song. This diagram translates into the parti diagram for the plan of the design and the sudden bump outs and turns break up the single lengthy path.

SCHEMATIC DESIGN The design began by looking at the needs of a hotel versus a hostel and identifying common areas between the two. Blocking the building out into spatial locations and overlaying these blocking diagrams with the parti began to reveal the plan of the space.

FIRST FLOOR DEVELOPMENT Development of the first floor design required research of needed back of house spaces and this research combined with the parti and blocking diagraming led to the development of a first floor plan that allows for discovery and socialization.

The bar is used as a serving area for breakfast foods and then in the evening becomes a full bar. Locked cabinets below the counters hold drinks and supplies.

Two sided fireplace provides a visual connection between the lobby and guest lounge.

Wheelchair ramp walkway entrance.

Open part of business center provides a space for group work or meetings.

Lounge space for hostel rooms provides a space for these guests to interact away from where it noise would cause an issue for other guests.

Along with the lounge space is a game space for further entertainment.

A second floor lounge space serves as an extension of the lobby and as a second floor elevator lobby.

SCREEN DESIGN A B C D

The design of the screen is based off of the musical forms ABABCB, ABACADBC, ABCDBC, and ABCDBC. The design of these screens creates rhythm and pattern, as well as layering throughout the space and abstractly resembles sheet music. The use of brass as the material for the screens, as well as the material for accents throughout the space comes from the brass era cars that were once produced in the building.
