Biodiversity Station Spring 2015 Puerto Maldonado, Peruvian Rainforest, Peru Senior Capstone Project

Las Piedras Biodiversity Station is a biological research center in the Peruvian rainforest, north of Puerto Maldonado. The station serves the Radford Amazonian Research Expedition program which brings students and researchers to study the rainforest. A half-mile hike through the rainforest, up 150 stairs, the station sits above the river, avoiding any seasonal ooding.

The redesign of the station creates more housing for visitors and incorporates a laboratory space.

Made of lumber, aluminum and sheet metal roofs, the new station allows for more multi-use space for the program and creates a better environment for living and working.

The concept of layering is represented in the push and pull of the floorplan. In multistory spaces, volumes are removed to create this push and pull effect. In single story spaces, metal louvers continue spaces from “interior” to “exterior” and create multi-use space. The louvers create multi-use space specifically outside of the lab. Large slat wall doors open up the lab and allow the space underneath the louvers to become an outdoor extension of the lab.

Concept Diagrams

The concept for the design is inspired by the ďŹ ve layers of the rainforest. The forest oor, under story, canopy and emergent layer are full of different colors, densities, and scales. By abstracting diagrams of the layers, grid systems are created that have been translated into the plan, the slat wall module, and the louver system that are found in the design. All of these moves create density and scale, and aid in the letting in and shading of natural light to the space.

North Elevation

The slat wall is a series of wooden pieces made from the old building that at different thicknesses, create density without a solid wall. The wall also serves as a way to filter light into the space. This filtering of light is essential to the design because there are very few sources of artificial light in the space due to the only power being a small generator.

The Dubai Health Authority is working to expand healthcare facilities in the UAE and is working to transform Rashid Hospital into a world-class medical campus. The entire project reects Dubai’s progressive built environment. The design also aims to incorporate traditional elements found in Islamic and Middle Eastern design. In the Rehabilitation Center facility, the concept of enclosure is shown through space planning, material use, and line of sight to create a comfortable environment for patients and visitors.

In the main lobby, a stairway incorporates planters and small seating areas to create a comfortable, relaxed environment that brings the outside indoors. The same effect is achieved in the third oor gym lobby that houses an indoor wandering garden and has different degrees of visibility to the exterior, as well as to the gym facility. The design of the patient rooms allows for comfortable space for family and other visitors and the curved shape of the rooms has a calming effect and breaks the idea of a typical patient room.

The dynamic wall was designed as part of a spatial typology study. The goal was for the occupant to be able to control the amount of sunlight entering the space, while still allowing for a line of sight through the building as a whole.

The design resulted in a series of sliding screens with circle cutouts to allow for amounts of light to be altered, while still having openings in the wall. The sun coming through the screens creates light patterns on the walls, floor and ceiling. These patterns are different with every movement of the screen.

Shared Spaces Chicago is an educational and community design center that allows interior design students from Harrington College of Design and professionals, to work in a vertical studio environment with community members and local officials to design solutions to the fresh food desert issue in the south of Chicago. Using the concept of “connectivity,” the space was designed to foster the development of design solutions as well as to educate the community about these solutions.

The concrete oor design is a simpliďŹ ed Chicago Railway map.

Many areas in south Chicago lack full-service grocery stores and farmers markets, and even in places that do have these stores, poor choices are still being made due to a lack of knowledge about nutrition and meal preparation. By designing spaces such as grocery stores, farmers markets, teaching kitchens, urban gardens, and seed libraries, gaps creating food deserts can be closed.

The concept of connectivity is based off of the idea that to successfully combat food deserts, each part of the farm to table process must be addressed and understood. The rail system in Chicago serves as an inspiration for the concept because the trains were initially used for the purpose of bringing food into the city, thus connecting the city to the rural farm land.

Food Desert and Solution Images

Connectivity and aspects of the rail system are shown throughout the design center in elements such as the railway system oor pattern, the wood slat ceiling that is consistent throughout, and the open plan that allows each space to be multi-functional and open to other spaces, connecting different activities. A wall graphic demonstrating the concept of connectivity was abstracted from a railway map and the reception window seating is inspired by railcars.

To demonstrate sustainability, all wood in the design center comes from old railroad ties and the aggregate for the concrete oor is made of gravel from rail-yards. The metal piece on the reception desk is made from an old railcar to create a sense of place immediately upon entry.

Schamus and Emonts

Residence Spring 2014 Upper West Side, New York City Third Place - Residential Design Competition

The remodel of this pre-war apartment, in the Upper West Side of Manhattan was designed for James Schamus, a screenwriter and Columbia professor, and his wife Ann French Emonts, a former Broadway costume designer and current owner of Darling Boutique. The couple have both found success in Los Angeles and New York, thus inspiring the transitional style of the design. The apartment has a backdrop of white walls, with a consistent wood ooring throughout to represent the more sophisticated style of New York, but incorporates pops of color to represent Los Angeles.

Winery + Tasting House Fall 2014 Riva San Vitale, Switzerland Study Abroad Design Project

This project transforms the existing Casa Bianchi and the surrounding land into a tasting house and winery. The concept of pairing allows the new to be paired with the old, combining the original architecture with new design.

A new stair has been introduced to pull the visitor through the entire house. Starting at the top floor, visitors meander through two floors of retail to see the product and then experience the wine on the bottom two tasting floors. To then exit, visitors again walk through the retail space.

The original stairwell is preserved through the creation of a light well in its place. Frosted glass ooring allows light to travel down the shaft through the entire house, bringing in natural light to warm up the house. The yellow of the previous stair is kept as the accent color for the space.

Extending from the stairs is a wooden acoustic wall. This allows the old walls to be revealed underneath the stairs while addressing the problem of sound in a space being changed from private to public.

The use of wood also brings warmth to the space.

Winery Placement Process

Winery and Tasting House Plans

Behind the tasting house sits the winery production building. This space is built into the mountain to symbolize the wine coming from nature. The production building does not stand higher than the house and is the same width as to keep the building from distracting from the architecture of the house. The design creates a carport space that serves as an entrance to both the production space and the tasting house.

The Foundry

Restaurant + Bar Fall 2015 Nashville, TN NEWH Sustainable Competition

The Foundry is a Korean BBQ restaurant located in Nashville, Tennessee, as part of a hotel located in the old Marathon Motorworks building. Marathon Motorworks was a large car manufacturer in the early 1900’s. The idea of the space producing part of a whole is manifested in the concept for the space, as well as the fact that the restaurant is located in the factory’s foundry. The goal of the space is to draw in not only hotel guests, but Nashville locals as well by providing a casual, but upscale restaurant, bar and performance venue that combines a dining experience of preparing your own food with the art and music of the city. This combination creates a cultural fusion, just a short distance from downtown Nashville.

The concept for the design was developed from the nature of Korean BBQ, the building’s original use as a car manufacturer, and the culture of Nashville. Using the building and layering attributes of music production also found in the preparation of Korean BBQ, a concept of fusion, based on the design idea of part to whole was developed. Many different instruments are put together to produce a song, demonstrating the idea of part to whole and Korean BBQ is served with a variety of side dishes to create your meal. Many types of music visualization diagrams were studied to develop forms within the space that could create an atmosphere that shows movement, while staying still. This is demonstrated in the plan, the ceiling feature, bar designs, and custom furniture designs.

Ceiling Element Process and Design

The goal of the ceiling element was to bring the user from the entrance, through the space allowing for the choice of the indoor bar, lounge, or dining area, eventually ending at the outdoor bar, or ďŹ nale, much like the progression of a song. The design of the ceiling lighting feature is based off of visualizations of music. Abstracting diagrams of songs and sound into triangular shapes found in the visualizations, a pattern was created in 2-D and was then extruded into 3-D pyramids at different heights. These different heights represent the different instruments used in a song and the different sound levels and intensity of each instrument. The ceiling feature is made of small metal tubes that at each connection point have a small LED light to emphasize the concept of connecting parts to a whole. The intricate, yet delicate design speaks to detailed and light focused Korean design.

Bar Design Concept Elevation

The design of the bar detail is based off of the structure of a song, and is demonstrated in the density of the inlayed metal pattern.

Starting on the left side, the song begins with a softer, quieter sound, and with fewer instruments. As the song progresses into more verses and choruses, sound increases and more instruments are added. This is represented by the increased density of the detail. For the bridge of the song, the density is decreased and then is again increased to end the song in a ďŹ nale, before trailing off into “silence.â€?
