iarritz’s old town is full of elegant boutiques and gourmet grocer’s, but it also has its fair share of antiques, delicatessen and fine chocolates, not to mention the achingly hip surf shops. Famous for its range of boards and look of the store, Wallako is a laid-back surf shop with a hammock at the door, just outside the centre of town. As the day progresses, the local dress code goes from beach bum mode to high street fashion. So now pay a visit to 64, a local fashion label that has several stylish stores on rue Gambetta, including ones for beachwear and children, and was set up by local designers. Named for the area code of this département of France, 64 is famous for making T-shirts with the eye-catching number in every colour and devotees of the brand actually collect them all! For the perfect beach footwear and a comfy souvenir to take back home, go to Les Sandales d’Eugénie, an artisan store on rue Mazagran offering all kinds of hand-made espadrilles for all occasions. If you prefer fragrant chic showcases then check out Le Corner de Sophie, a fantastic little soap store run by mother and daughter selling several local brands including organic French nail polish. Chocaholics will relapse when they enter Maison Adam, a traditional bakery that sells world-class macaroons made from freshly ground almonds, coconut and a chocolate coating. Another tempting sweet shop, La Maison Henriet lurks around the corner.
