t the invitation of the Cinémathèque, com poser and conductor Carl Davis has been thrilling audiences in Luxembourg for more than two decades with his Live Cinema events. Indeed, Davis was at the very forefront of the revival of live cinema when, in 1980, he composed a score to accompany Kevin Brownlow’s restoration of Abel Gance’s 1927 five-hour epic Napoleon (a production he later brought to Luxembourg). Each March Davis arrives with a score for a silent film and practices with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg (OPL) for two performances. The films inevitably vary between comedy classics by the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd and dramatic epics such as Erich von Stroheim’s Greed or DW Griffith’s Intolerance. Clarence Brown’s Flesh and the Devil falls into the latter category. A romantic drama based on the novel The Undying Past by Hermann Sudermann, it made a Hollywood star of Greta Garbo who plays a temptress alongside John Gilbert and Lars Hanson (as best friends) in a tragic love triangle. Such was the on-screen chemistry between Gilbert and Garbo that they were paired together three more times. A Family Edition featuring two Charlie Chaplin films – The Floorwalker and The Adventurer (both 1916) – is scheduled for the Saturday afternoon. Q

Pionnier de la renaissance du cinéma avec musique live, il composa un accompagnement en 1980 pour Napoléon d’Abel Gance (1927), épopée cinématographique de cinq heures, restaurée par Kevin Brownlow (cette production fut ensuite présentée au Luxembourg). Chaque année, au mois de mars, Davis répète avec l’OPL une pièce de musique composée spécialement pour accompagner un film muet. Les films sont de grands classiques du comique : Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton et Harold Lloyd, ou des drames épiques comme Les Rapaces d’Erich von Sparks fly when Garbo and Gilbert share the screen in Flesh and the Devil. Stroheim ou encore Intolérance de DW Griffith. Dans La Chair et le Diable, la rencontre de Garbo et Gilbert fait des étincelles. La Chair et le Diable de Clarence Brown appartient à cette catégorie. Ce drame romantique, d’après le roman d’Hermann Sudermann, The Undying Past, fit de Greta Garbo une star d’Hollywood dans un rôle de tentatrice entre deux très bons amis, joués par John Gilbert et Lars Hanson, dans un tragique triangle amoureux. À l’écran, l’alchimie entre Gilbert et Garbo était si parfaite qu’Hollywood les réunit en trois autres occasions. Une séance Famille avec deux films de Chaplin, Charlot chef de rayon et Charlot s’évade (tous deux de 1916), est prévue le samedi après-midi. Q

If ever a book was destined to be adapted for the big screen by Tim Burton, it is Lewis Carroll’s 1865 classic. The madcap director here brings to life the fantastic world created by Carroll. Burton stalwart Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter (Red Queen), Stephen Fry (Cheshire Cat) and Matt Lucas (Tweedledee/dum) are all perfectly cast. S’il y a un livre qui était destiné à être adapté au cinéma par Tim Burton, c’est bien le classique de Lewis Carroll de 1865. Ce réalisateur extravagant a donné vie au monde fantastique créé par Lewis Carroll. Johnny Depp, fidèle à Tim Burton, incarne le Chapelier Fou, Helena Bonham Carter, la Reine de Cœur, Stephen Fry, le Chat du Cheshire et Matt Lucas, Tweedledee/dum, une distribution parfaite pour le film. Based on the acclaimed novel Push, Lee Daniels’ much hyped film is about the struggles of the title character. Precious is an overweight, illiterate teen, pregnant and abused by her parents and bullied at school. The premise is grim but hope and redemption also shine through in the film, which has been nominated for six Academy Awards. Precious est une adolescente obèse, analphabète, enceinte, maltraitée par ses parents et brutalisée à l’école. Colin Firth has received an Oscar nomination for his central performance in the debut feature from fashion designer Tom Ford. Based on a Christopher Isherwood novel, the film follows Firth’s “single man” (a euphemism for homosexual back in the 60s) through a day that might well be his last. Julianne Moore co-stars as his boozy best friend. Colin Firth a été nominé aux Oscars pour son interprétation du rôle principal du premier film du couturier Tom Ford.
