L’histoire en musique
D

irected by Michel Hazanavicius and featuring actors Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Béjeau, The Artist is the silent film to have won the most awards in the 21st century: three Golden Globes, six Césars and five Oscars… Unheard of for a French film set in Hollywood in 1927, which recounts the life of two actors: George Valentin, a highly popular star of the silent movies fated to be forgotten after the arrival of the talking pictures, and Peppy Miller, a young walk-on extra who is instead propelled to stardom. Two destinies that cross though everything would appear to separate them… Even though Jean Dujardin received the Oscar for best actor, Uggie, the convivial Jack Russell who shared a starring role with him, has most definitely left the imprint of his canine paws in Hollywood just like Fred Astaire, Marilyn Monroe and other celebrities before him. Not bad for a dog! Just like the narrative it recounts, the film itself defies all logic and is a unique experience for the viewer offering an immersion into the history of silent cinema, its codes and the significance music plays in these films. The music is by Ludovic Bource and is inspired by Hollywood films and the great classics of the first half of the 20th century, but also by a song of Brahms entitled Sapphic Ode sung by Kathleen Ferrier. The latter won the César for best film music, a Golden Globe in the United States and a BAFTA award in London. Under the baton of Ernst van Tiel, and with the French composer at the piano, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg will perform the original soundtrack of the film live and in the process bring out the full importance of this highly original and nostalgic piece of work.
The Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi, musical director of the Orchestre de Paris since 2007, is proposing a musical panorama that draws on his secret formula and the resources both of history and of his orchestra’s excellence. The maestro is presenting figures such as Debussy and Stravinsky, who were already included in the inaugural programme of the Orchestre de Paris in 1967, and intends to round off the encounter with some French music (the orchestra’s speciality) in the form of Ravel’s extremely popular Boléro. The finale will be Béla Bartòk’s last Concerto for piano with its sublime adagio religioso, performed by Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski who is more than ready to take up the challenge.

“To listen is the best way to hear (and understand) properly,” wrote Monsieur de Beaumarchais. This recommendation is certainly not contradicted by the cycle “2 x hören” (to hear twice). Thanks to Martina Taubenberger’s presentation (in German in the text) and to the performance of the Minguet Quartett, Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll will no longer have any secrets for you. This musical homage was paid to Cosima Wagner in her villa in Tribschen on the occasion of her birthday on 25 December, 1870. Friedrich Nietzsche, a friend of the couple, was invited and the piece was performed for Wagner’s charming consort also as a most unusual Christmas present.
