he CommerceDesign competition originated in Montreal in 1995, and was first adopted by Luxembourg in 2010, when the UCVL was seeking a tool to promote good practice in terms of design among its members. The competition rewards retailers and service providers, and their architects and interior designers, who have invested in refurbishing, redesigning and renovating their premises over the last two years. UCVL director Yves Piron says that the organisers were pleasantly surprised by the number of entries. Some 50 submissions were made, although some were not handed in on time or were incomplete. “That is more than double the number of entries compared to 2010,” says Piron. That reflects the increasing awareness among retailers, restaurateurs and service providers of the importance of design. Indeed, Piron says that the UCVL has identified at least 80 outlets over

the last two years that have renovated their premises and invested in design. “Another difference to 2010 is that retailers outside the city centre are also beginning to make an effort,” says Piron. “We had submissions from other neighbourhoods such as the Gare area, Kirchberg and surrounding suburbs. This proves that CommerceDesign is a project that involves the entire city.” The quality of design has also improved, making the job of the jury even more difficult. This year the jury, led by architect Stefan Moreno and including Marie-Josée Lacroix, Christian Bauer, Lisi Teisen, Lise Coirier, Robert L. Philippart and Claudia Eustergerling, decided to award prizes to 16 projects rather than name 10 winners and 10 “nominees” as was the procedure in the first edition. Piron says that the results of this year’s competition are further proof that the private sector in Luxembourg is proving to be dynamic

in its approach to improving the shopping experience in the city. But he believes the public authorities are lagging behind and need to make an effort to improve the environment – things such as street furniture. “But I know that procedures are different in the public sector and it is good to see Xavier Bettel and his team moving in the right direction,” he adds. Indeed, the Ville de Luxembourg partnered with the UCVL for the 2012 CommerceDesign competition and will also most likely be involved in the third edition, which Piron reveals has been agreed in principle to take place in 2014. www.cityshopping.lu
