EN Following the German invasion of 1940, the grand- ducal family, the government-in-exile and Jewish refugees found refuge in Portugal. In the 1960s, however, it was the turn of Luxembourg to take in Portuguese refugees fleeing the Salazar regime.
FR Dans son exposition Into the Open visible à la galerie Dominique Lang, João Freitas utilise papier et autres supports à base de bois pour y concevoir ses œuvres au crayon et au feutre. Son travail comprend également d’autres processus (support brûlé, pelé, déchiré) pour apporter aux surfaces des dimensions imprévues de couleur, de texture, de réflexion et même de temps et d’espace. Quant à Justine Blau, l’ensemble de son exposition Vida inerte, visible à la galerie Nei Liicht, prend sa source dans une cucurbitacée, le sicyos villosa, aujourd’hui disparu. L’artiste l’a « réintroduit » dans ses œuvres déclinées en séries de photographies, en marionnetterobot, en film et en natures mortes. Un vaste programme des plus surprenants.
EN In his exhibition Into the Open at the Dominique Lang gallery, João Freitas uses paper and other wood-based media to design his works in pencil and felt pen, as well as incorporating various other processes (including burnt, peeled and torn materials) to give his surfaces unexpected colour, textural, reflective and even time and space-related dimensions. As for Justine Blau, meanwhile, her entire exhibition called Vida inerte and being staged at the Nei Liicht gallery is based on the sicyos villosa – a cucurbit that is now extinct. The artist has ‘reintroduced’ it in her work through a series of photographs, a robot puppet, films and still lifes, making for a truly extraordinary exhibition with an extensive programme.
