Hello and a very warm welcome to our latest edition of Dorset Business Focus. I hope you are enjoying the long days and lovely weather, so good for the soul!
As always, it’s been a really busy few months for Dorset Chamber supporting our business community. May saw the Dorset Apprenticeship Awards, supported by the Dorset and Somerset Training Provider Network and sponsored by Superior. Held at the amazing Superior Factory 4 in Ferndown, we came together with all our finalists and winners to celebrate their incredible achievements. The categories covered all levels of apprenticeships and for the first time, Supported Internships were included. We listened to the hugely inspiring and very human journeys all our finalists have been on. What is so rewarding and moving is to listen to the impact that the apprenticeship programme has not only had on people’s careers but also their lives. Congratulations to all our winners, finalists, employers and training providers.
June saw our latest Business Expo with hundreds of people from all sectors attending. The day was full of energy and positivity and countless new connections were made. These events are firmly embedded within our forward events plan and the next Expo takes place in October, contact us now to reserve your stand.

The Marsham Court Hotel, a proudly family-owned and operated establishment overlooking the stunning Bay in Bournemouth, is delighted to announce its achievement of the internationally recognised Green Key certification. This respected ecolabel is awarded to tourism establishments that meet strict criteria for environmental responsibility and sustainable operations.
Achieving Green Key status is a significant milestone in the hotel’s sustainability journey—one that was made possible with the expert guidance of Mike Harrison from Completely Hotels. Mike’s support and industry insight were instrumental in helping the Marsham Court team navigate the rigorous certification process.
“Having worked incredibly hard for the last year to improve our sustainability, our team can finally celebrate our new Green Key status!” said James Dixon-Box, Operations Director at Marsham Court Hotel. “This has been such an empowering project for our whole team, and everyone has worked so hard towards it. We’re especially grateful
to Mike Harrison from Completely Hotels, whose knowledge, advice and guidance made a real difference. I am so proud of everything we have done and continue to do. As well as being one of the most accessible hotels in the UK, we can now call ourselves an accredited sustainable business too.”
The hotel has implemented a range of initiatives to meet Green Key’s strict sustainability standards:
Green Transport Options: Guests are encouraged to explore Bournemouth sustainably using Beryl Bikes and More Bus services. EV drivers can take advantage of the hotel’s electric vehicle charging stations.
Replacing Harmful Chemical Cleaning Agents: By sourcing eco-labelled products and harnessing new technology, the hotel has eliminated harmful chemicals in their daily housekeeping routines.
Eco-Friendly Guest Practices: The hotel has phased out single-use plastics, installed energy-efficient lighting, introduced refillable toiletry dispensers, and promotes towel and linen reuse to conserve water and energy.
In addition to its green credentials, the Marsham Court Hotel continues to lead in accessibility. Renovations include a changing places facility, sensory room, and fully accessible bedrooms with ceiling hoists and profiling beds—making it one of the most inclusive hotels in the UK.

Dorset Chamber and Dorset Council have joined forces to help boost business in the county.
The chamber has strengthened its ranks by welcoming the local authority as a new Platinum Business Partner.
Dorset Council is the local authority for the unitary area of Dorset, providing around 450 different services to 380,000 residents.
Dorset Chamber, with nearly 700 members representing more than 37,000 employees, is the county’s leading business support organisation. Its business partner programme is for members that wish to make a greater contribution to the organisation and the business community.
Ian Girling, Dorset Chamber chief executive, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Dorset Council as a platinum business partner. It is important for business and the local economy that there is a strong public-private relationship based on transparency, respect and open lines of communication. This strengthens our strategic relationship and our ability to work together to support business across Dorset.
“Dorset Council will be a valuable addition to our dedicated group of business
partners who play a key role in helping the chamber drive the local economy and support its vision for a vibrant and prosperous Dorset business community that enhances the quality of life for all.”
Dorset Council is the top tier of local government and recently appointed a new chief executive, Dr Catherine Howe, who will take up her post later this summer. It is a major local employer with about 4,800 staff and has 82 elected councillors representing 52 wards.
The council supports economic development in Dorset through a number of initiatives and as an organisation spends more than 50% of its annual budget on buying external goods, services and works from more than 6,000 suppliers locally – of which, 51% of which are based in Dorset.
Cllr Nick Ireland, Dorset Council’s leader, said: “It’s great that Dorset Council can build on its traditional partnership with Dorset’s Chamber of Commerce.
“We already collaborate on a range of projects, so I hope that becoming a business partner will present new opportunities for local businesses and will help us meet our key priority to grow Dorset’s economy.
“We are committed to creating a vibrant
and thriving community where businesses can excel, and residents can benefit from increased job opportunities.
“We look forward to seeing the positive impact this partnership will bring to Dorset.” www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk

Being in a leadership role is about much more than a job title or being an expert in your field, it is about modelling appropriate behaviour and demonstrating work practices that inspire, all whilst quickly adapting to changing priorities.
Connection
Individual team members will appreciate fair, honest and consistent leadership. Building connections with the team is key in allowing leaders to understand the individual strengths and weaknesses within their teams, and to quickly identify and deal with any concerns. Being approachable, showing that you have time to listen and addressing matters as they arise, gives managers and leaders the opportunity to nip things in the bud before they escalate into more significant issues.
Discussions will be easier to handle for managers and team members where a level of trust and openness already exists. However, showing vulnerability and developing trust with your team doesn’t need to be complicated, it could be as simple as sharing challenges around projects or deadlines, giving regular feedback, apologising when you are wrong and showing a genuine interest in your team and their wellbeing.
Difficult conversations
As a team leader or manager, it is inevitable that you will be required to have difficult conversations with a team member at some point. You may need to address poor performance, dress code, personal or health matters or challenging behaviour,
and where you anticipate strong emotions or confrontation, that can be daunting. When addressing difficult topics, it can be helpful for managers to consider the following:
• Start by being honest about whether you are the correct person to deal with the matter. If you need to, seek support from your HR team or from a more experienced colleague first.
• Check whether any internal policies or procedures apply to the circumstances. If so, you may need to refer to them and follow certain steps or timescales.
• Be sure the timing is right, early intervention can avoid issues escalating, but it is important not to rush into dealing with matters before you have all the facts available.
• Prepare before the meeting – do you have recent examples available?
• Noting down what you need to cover can be useful in keeping on track if emotions are high and enable you to keep control of the meeting.
• Keep confidentiality in mind. If you need to share sensitive details, ensure the individual knows why and who will be made aware.
As a team leader or manager, it is inevitable that you will be required to have difficult conversations with a team member at some point.
• Where performance levels are concerned, individuals should be aware through regular one to one meetings or annual appraisals and so there should be no surprises.
• Use a private space for your discussions and ensure remote meetings are secure.
• You may not have all the answers available immediately, so may need to arrange to meet again.
Being a leader can present a range of challenges, and leaders need to ensure they look after themselves as well as their teams. Demonstrating to the workforce that seeking help, setting boundaries and taking time to reset is expected and encouraged, can be beneficial for all.

Chamber Platinum Business Partner, A One Insurance, shine a light on the importance of protecting your organisation with Directors and Officers insurance.
Businesses of all sizes are trading in a more litigious environment, with claims of wrongdoing on the increase. Legal proceedings brought by customers, shareholders, investors, suppliers and even employees can cost companies – and their directors – dearly. Without adequate Directors & Officers insurance, any senior manager in your business could find themselves having to cover the legal costs of defending themselves against a claim out of their own pocket.
What is D&O Insurance?
Directors & Officers (D&O) insurance, also known as Management liability insurance, provides legal protection for directors, senior managers and officers for claims made against them for wrongful acts they have committed or are alleged to have committed in their company roles.
Who needs it?
If you hold a senior decision-making position in your business, you’ll have liabilities, statutory duties and responsibilities relating to that role. If you fail or are alleged to have failed in fulfilling any of these obligations (or act outside the parameters of your position), you may face civil, criminal or regulatory proceedings. Without Directors & Officers insurance, you run the risk of being unable to defend against actions such as disqualification from your position, civil proceedings, criminal prosecution,
or meet any compensation costs that arise from an unsuccessful defence.
D&O Claims Examples
Including but not limited to:
The Company or Other Directors
A director has interests in other companies and is accused of diverting business to one of those entities. The other directors (or the company itself) bring a claim against the director personally for breach of duty, and refuse to allow the company to indemnify the director accused of the wrongful act.
The company or other directors can accuse a fellow director of a wrongful act and bring action against them, e.g. Creditors
Directors often provide guarantees when the company takes on loans or stock onto the balance sheet. If the company fails to pay back a loan, or amounts due for stock/services received, the creditors can pursue the directors, e.g.
A company enters administration and creditors bring a claim against the directors personally, alleging misleading statements or misrepresentation of the company.
The Sale of a Company or Shares
Following the sale of the company, further information comes to light that leads the buyer to allege that the directors overstated the true purchase value. A claim is brought against the former directors alleging misleading statements, or misrepresentation.
Should a company be sold or sell a percentage of its shareholding, the purchasers could subsequently bring a claim against the directors if they allege the directors misled or misrepresented the worth of the company and overstated its value, e.g. Regulators
I. Following the death of an employee or member of the public: the HSE conduct an investigation and bring Corporate Manslaughter charges against the directors.
II. Following a data breach: the ICO conducts an investigation alleging GDPR breaches.
III. Following a tax investigation: HMRC or the SFO bring actions against the directors. There are over 90 Regulators in the UK both statutory and professional. For companies that fall within their remit, any have the potential to launch an investigation into a company and/or its directors, alleging a wrongful act has taken place, e.g.
If they are different to the directors, Shareholders can also bring claims against directors and officers in connection to any of the above examples, if they feel directors have not acted in the best interests of the company, or been negligent, resulting in a financial loss to shareholders.

Plans have been unveiled for a biomethane refuelling depot which will use locally sourced food waste to help cut carbon emissions from HGV (heavy goods vehicle) transport.
Dorset-based renewable energy firm Eco Sustainable Solutions is planning to open the depot at its Eco Park in Parley. It has submitted a planning application for the facility which will supply renewable gas produced from the company’s new anaerobic digestion (AD) plant, currently under construction and due for commissioning in November.
The depot will enable compressed biomethane to be used as an alternative to diesel for HGVs, one of the most difficult sectors to decarbonise. The biomethane will be refined from food waste collected across BCP, the New Forest, Dorset and surrounding areas.
The proposed depot will be able to refuel up to three vehicles at once and forms a critical part of Eco’s wider decarbonisation strategy, including the conversion of its own HGV fleet. Initial estimates suggest the facility will save at least 1,634 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) annually.
Justin Dampney, Managing Director of Eco Sustainable Solutions, said: “This is about enabling long-term, localised carbon savings in the transport sector.
“By using fuel derived from the food waste we process, the depot will help reduce emissions where it’s traditionally been hardest – heavy goods transport.
“This isn’t just a solution for our fleet. In time, the depot could provide clean fuel for other operators too – all powered by local food waste.”
Biomethane offers emissions reductions of up to 85 per cent compared to diesel and is rapidly gaining recognition as a viable low-
carbon fuel for logistics and waste sectors.
Founded in 1995, Eco has an annual turnover of £21 million and employs 52 people. In 2024, the company recycled 236,446 tonnes of material including 61,191 tonnes of food waste, 51,462 tonnes of wood waste and 36,960 tonnes of food waste.
As well as Parley and Piddlehinton, the company also has a site at Weymouth, all in Dorset. www.thisiseco.co.uk

As we accelerate into summer, the resilience and creativity of our members continue to impress me. Over the last few years there seem to be never ending challenges to businesses from all directions. Yet most seem to adapt and continue with bulldog spirt.
This month, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with a wide range of local businesses—each with its own story of perseverance, innovation, and community spirit. Whether it’s embracing sustainability, adapting to new technologies, or forging valuable partnerships, our members are showing what it truly means to lead with purpose.
At the Chamber, we’re also gearing up for an exciting season of events, including networking opportunities, business expos, and forums that give every member a platform to connect and grow. I encourage you to get involved— these events are more than just dates in the diary; they’re the heartbeat of our business community.
As always, I’m proud to represent such a dynamic and forward-thinking Chamber. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to making Dorset not just a great place to do business—but a great place to thrive.
Wishing you all a successful and sunny July.
A local charity, providing reminiscence-based activities for people living with dementia and those experiencing social isolation or loneliness, has received a muchneeded donation from Morebus this week.
“Until the end of last year, our charity provided free monthly reminiscence sessions in three public libraries in the BCP area,” said Kayte West, head of charity services at The Memory Box Foundation. “In the past, we have had an average attendance of 30 people per month. Our experience shows us that reminiscence helps improve mood and general well-being –whilst also providing cognitive stimulation for older people.
“Sadly, we had to withdraw these sessions due to the end of a funding stream. We would like to restart this programme for a further year, so we have been in touch with Morebus, and the company donated £300 from its community fund.
“This funding will pay for staffing and travel, and also refreshments for participants. I’d like to thank Morebus for its support.”
Nikki Honer, Morebus head of communications, added: “I’m delighted we have been able to help bring these sessions back for local people. We know our bus services provide a vital lifeline for many who travel with us – helping them to access local services and providing much-needed social interaction. Our drivers are trained to be ‘dementia friendly’ and we work hard to make travelling by bus more accessible for all.
“I couldn’t think of a more worthy cause for our community fund to support.”

Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited, has retained its prestigious Investors in People (IIP) Gold accreditation, a status which only 28% of companies assessed achieve.
The IIP report, which was evaluated through individual interviews and small focus groups with Greendale employees, as well as surveys and rigorous documentation reviews, drew attention to the Company’s fully supported training which is regularly reviewed for every role across the business. Wellbeing was also noted as being of great importance with frequent discussions taking place within the workplace and mental health being a top priority across the company.

A garden celebrating Lighthouse as a platform for creativity won a Gold Award at the BBC Gardener’s World Live Spring Fair..
The Beacon Garden, by Poole-based designer Matt Evans, was awarded Gold in the Best Showcase Garden category at the event that brought thousands of visitors to Beaulieu over the bank holiday weekend. Matt, a Lighthouse Development Ambassador whose business, The Garden Room Living & Landscape Studio, is based on Poole paid tribute to the work Lighthouse does promoting the creative industries across the region.
He explains: “The Beacon Garden is a coastal garden that, like Lighthouse, is different every day and, like Lighthouse, it has been designed to promote and provide a nurturing platform for creative arts and culture to be showcased and thrive.”
Representing Lighthouse and its work in developing artists in the community, members of Poole Leisure Painters – who have met at Lighthouse since 1981 – set up and worked in The Beacon Garden, responding in paint to the garden and interacting with visitors.
“Lighthouse is extremely proud of Matt and the Garden Room Living & Landscape Studio – The Beacon Garden is an incredible achievement and richly deserves its award,” says Sue Lloyd, Head of Development & Partnerships at Lighthouse.
“The involvement of our communities, and the work we do to engage them is very

It was also noted that Greendale’s pride in the quality of work delivered, is reflected in the company values.
Based on 25 years of leading practice, the Investors in People Standard is underpinned by a rigorous assessment methodology and a framework which reflects the very latest workplace trends, essential skills and effective structures required to outperform in any industry. The IIP’s internationally recognised standard defines what it takes to lead, support and manage people well for sustainable results.

West Dorset MP Edward Morello and Alistair Carmichael, MP for Orkney and Shetland and Chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee, visited the Kingston Maurward campus near Dorchester on Friday as part of a national inquiry into the future of farming.
The MPs toured the College’s 750-acre estate, including the working farm, before sitting down with Agriculture students for an open and honest discussion about the challenges facing the industry. Topics ranged from inheritance tax and fuel prices to land diversification, environmental stewardship, and rural resilience.
The students, many of whom come from farming backgrounds, welcomed the chance to ask questions and share their perspectives directly with policymakers.
Student Louisa Hayward said: “I thought this was a great opportunity to speak to other members of the agricultural society, who can help create a change in the workplace as
these difficult times for lots of farmers.
“This gave us, as young farmers, the opportunity to voice our opinions and ask valuable questions on where we think the future of farming is heading, and what we can do to help the industry succeed.”
Mr Carmichael asked students about the types of farming they were interested in and encouraged them to continue with determination, despite challenges.
“This is an industry you should be proud to be a part of,” he commented. “You do something that’s enormously important to the
rest of the country.”
Both MPs highlighted the growing political focus on farming.
Mr Morello commented: “It is easy to be negative when we look at the challenges we face, but if you flip this around, we have never talked about farming more than we do at the moment. For the first time ever we are talking about farming all the time in politics, in newspapers. This is when we can make positive change.”

Applications are now open for charitable organisations across the south to receive support from H&W’s £60,000 fund. Every year, H&W awards between £300 and £3,000 to more than 20 local charities across its trading area in the south of England. Grants can be used to support youth work and activities; local arts and culture initiatives;
sports and social clubs; health and social care; the elderly and people with disabilities; and environmental and conservation work. Entrants have until Sunday, July 13 2025 to submit their grant applications. Funds can be used towards equipment and furniture, training, transport, professional assistance, specific project resources, or operational costs.
Anthony Woodhouse, Chairman of Hall & Woodhouse, said: “Our Community Chest
began 24 years ago as a local initiative to give back to our Dorset heartland communities. Today, we remain committed to the Chest and have expanded our reach to support charities from Devon to Sussex and from Bristol to Twickenham.
“We’re looking forward to another thought-provoking year, learning all about the incredible people that devote so much time, love, and care into making a difference. This year, we will award our 1,000th charity with a grant, and our donations will take our Community Chest donation total even closer to the £1million mark.”
The Hall & Woodhouse Community Chest receives invaluable advice and knowledge from the Dorset & Sussex Community Foundations, ensuring every pound that is donated makes a difference.
Successful applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application in November 2025, with an awards ceremony held in January 2026. This year’s judging panel consists of Hall & Woodhouse team members and family, alongside local heads of business, and the Dorset and Sussex Community Foundations.

In 2025, the UK is actively advancing trade relations involving key global partners as it seeks to enhance market access and foster economic growth. Ongoing discussions have resulted in making major strides in reshaping its global trade relationships, with key developments involving the EU, India, and the United States.
At the UK–EU Summit in May, a new strategic partnership was launched to improve post-Brexit co-operation. The summit addressed critical areas including defence procurement, energy co-operation, regulatory alignment, and the easing of trade in food and plant products through a common sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) area. Efforts to enhance business mobility and professional qualification recognition also featured prominently. These initiatives are expected to reduce trade friction and cut operational costs for UK exporters, with the British Chambers of Commerce calling the summit a “turning
point”. The summit is the first in series of annual UK-EU summits across the full spectrum of UK-EU relationships at leaders’ level with the next to take place in 2026. Meanwhile, the UK and India have reached an agreement in principle on a Free Trade Agreement aimed at reducing tariffs on key goods, expanding services trade, and encouraging investment. Key growth sectors include technology, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing with tariff reductions on goods such as whisky and textiles. The deal positions the UK to benefit from India’s rapidly expanding market while supporting job creation and innovation.

For over two decades, Blue Sky Financial Planning’s founder, Gary Neild, has been at the helm of this leading financial services and wealth management firm. In December 2022, the business became an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT).
Dorset Business Focus spoke to Gary to discover how his leadership and approach have helped him to navigate the changes and challenges of the last 22 years - and his plans for the future. How has the financial services industry changed?
When I started out, the financial services industry was a scary place. It was a survival of the fittest mentality. Very little training was given, and expectations were high, with pressure to sell to family and friends. It was a commissionhungry environment too back then!
When I set up Blue Sky, I was keen to ensure there was clarity and transparency for all parties. At that time, it was easier said than done because the distribution channels were mainly through insurance and investment companies. It was difficult to understand all the charges, and transparency wasn’t easy to come by. Gradually, we have seen elevated professionalism across the profession and this has been most welcome. What core values or principles are central to your approach?
That’s easy to answer; integrity, honesty and trust. It’s important to deliver and follow through on what you say you are going to do. Consistency is key for us and culture is everything in my world. Get the behaviours right and you have a much-improved chance of creating and delivering an excellent service for clients. At Blue Sky, we have never had targets or bonus remunerations based on the amount of business written. We reward behaviours and when we are doing well, we reward as a collective and recognise outstanding commitment – this is why I chose to move to an EOT in 2022 as part of our legacy planning. How has your leadership evolved over time, especially transitioning from founder-led to employee-owned?
My leadership hasn’t changed much in its core style, but my approach has evolved. As
we have grown, I have been able to delegate and empower the team. I still love to lead and innovate, but I do so in a more collaborative manner which is a natural progression as we continue to attract very talented and capable people to the business. The motivation to transition to an EOT was all about legacy, trust and integrity. I’ve never seen the business as a cash cow. I’ve seen it as a business which represents my values and I want it to continue.
Since becoming an EOT, it’s reinforced that I couldn’t have made a better decision. It’s elevated everyone in the business and clients repeatedly say how pleased they are that we didn’t sell to a third party. The culture hasn’t shifted, but how the EOT set up has been embraced by the team and new recruits is to be admired.
The team have always been treated with respect, but they can now plan ahead with confidence - just like our clients do. The team are flourishing, as is the business. What trends or challenges do you foresee shaping the financial planning industry in the next decade?
The financial planning sector must continue to embrace technology to elevate the client experience, whilst remembering that many people want to deal with someone who understands them, provides educated perspective and gives them confidence. AI, particularly, will catch out many. Engagement and relevant communication are imperative in demonstrating value. We already embrace technology, but are acutely aware that businesses that don’t innovate and invest in their proposition won’t be around for much longer than 5-10 years. We always challenge ourselves as to whether any new technology is just a nice-to-have or if it is going to have a real impact on how we operate and deliver value. There is a difference between price and value in our business. Fund management
Consistency is key for us and culture is everything in my world. Get the behaviours right and you have a much-improved chance of creating and delivering an excellent service for clients
and platform costs are falling and it is now possible to go online and evaluate one’s options and compare prices and performance. However, most people are not well-informed and skilled in investment matters, which can make for a dangerous mix. The value comes from the insight we deliver. Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for the company in its next chapter?
We want to keep attracting high-calibre people who want to flourish in a dynamic, yet caring environment. Two years into our EOT, we are having some genuinely exciting conversations with people across our sector who have been drawn to the ‘beacon’ that is Blue Sky.
I personally have been delegating and stepping back from internal meetings. I’ve only been able to do this because of the great team who understand the pathway and are willing to commit to our future success. My role increasingly is about working on the business, evaluating strategy and development, whilst still seeing some clients, particularly business owners. A lovely balance and one I’m very much enjoying.

The YMCA Big Sleep Easy offers an inspiring challenge for individuals, groups, and organisations to raise awareness of homelessness and funds for YMCA Bournemouth—a local charity committed to ending homelessness. This year’s event takes place on 18 October.
Participants set a fundraising target, wrap up warm, build a cardboard shelter, and spend a night sleeping rough so others don’t have to.
Every year, the YMCA Big Sleep Easy raises thousands of pounds to help tackle
homelessness in Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, and across Dorset. Funds raised support local homeless individuals by providing them with the tools and assistance they need to achieve independent living and a brighter, more secure future.
Not only does the event raise vital funds, but it also fosters team building, informal networking, and demonstrates a genuine commitment to supporting their homeless community.
This year’s event will be particularly special
as it will be the last Big Sleep Easy for a while, marking the semi-retirement of Sheena Dayman, their community fundraiser.
They’ve partnered with Dorset’s disability charity, Diverse Abilities, to co-host this year’s event and it will take place at their site in Hurn.. Funds raised by them will contribute to an Information Hub for people with disabilities who are at risk of homelessness.

Figures for battery electric vehicles were obtained after the battery had been fully charged. Battery electric vehicles require mains electricity for charging. Zero emissions while driving. Charging times will also be affected by the charging curve (for example, once charging passes 80%, charging will slow to protect the battery’s longevity) and will be longer if battery temperature activates safeguarding technology.[CS1]

Vanguard Security is trading patrol routes for pedals this summer as the team embarks on an ambitious static bike challenge to raise funds for The Boo Charity, an organisation dedicated to empowering underprivileged children in Kenya.
Over the coming months, Vanguard Security staff will collectively cycle 9,725
kilometers, the approximate distance from Bournemouth to Kenya, all from a static bike setup at various public events. The challenge kicks off in high gear at the Christchurch Food Festival, taking place on May 24th to 26th.
“This goes beyond a fitness challenge,” said the General Manager of Vanguard Security. “It’s a chance for us to challenge ourselves
while contributing to something truly meaningful, helping children who deserve better opportunities and brighter futures. The Boo Charity does outstanding work in Kenya, and we’re honoured to support them. I’m also incredibly fortunate to be visiting the schools and children they support later this year, and I’m really looking forward to seeing firsthand the impact they’re making.”
The Boo Charity focuses on providing education and essential resources to children living in disadvantaged communities throughout Kenya. Funds raised from Vanguard’s cycling campaign will go directly toward these life-changing programs.
Festival-goers at Christchurch are encouraged to stop by the Vanguard Security stand to show support, cheer on the riders, and learn more about the cause. Donations can also be made online for those unable to attend in person.
As summer unfolds, the team will continue to clock kilometers at events across the country, inching closer to their 9,725km goal, and to making a lasting impact.

Dorset Chamber chief executive Ian Girling said: “Although there were measures in the Chancellor’s spending review to be welcomed, concerns from business remain strong.
“While it was encouraging to see funding announced for classroom improvements at Budmouth Academy in Weymouth, Dorset was once again notable by its absence in other major spending announcements.
“However, there may be opportunities once the small print is examined in such areas as AI, innovation, research and development funding, transport infrastructure, rail and training and upskilling young people.
“It is particularly important that many of the world class defence firms we have in Dorset benefit from the spending uplift in this sector.
“It was good to see the Chancellor prioritise affordable housing, as shortages of housing
stock and high property prices continue to be a major barrier to economic development in Dorset. We must be able to attract people to this area to support business growth.
“Dorset Chamber will continue to lobby for business to fight for the county’s fair share and will do all it can to support our politicians, leaders and other representatives in this endeavour too. Finally, Dorset businesses have consistently demonstrated their positivity, resilience and strength over recent years but many will be concerned about what is coming down the tracks in the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget.
“There must be no more taxes on business faced with ever increasing costs, a difficult labour market and burdensome red tape if the Chancellor is to achieve the growth she so desperately needs.
“While she may have splashed the cash today, she must not rinse businesses for it tomorrow.”
Baggette + Co Wealth Management has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing future talent by providing valuable handson experience to students exploring careers in financial planning.
George Christopher, a student from Poole High School, recently completed a nineweek placement at the financial planning firm, offering him first-hand insight into wealth management industry careers.
George first became interested in a career in finance after attending a sustainability talk by Baggette + Co’s Oscar Hjalmas at his school. Inspired to explore financial services further, George sought an opportunity to gain real-world experience.
He said: “I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in finance, but Oscar’s talk encouraged me to take it more seriously. After finishing my GCSEs, I wanted handson experience, and this placement provided the perfect opportunity,” said George.
During his time at Baggette + Co., George gained valuable insights into the inner workings of wealth management beyond what he had studied in school.
“At school, we covered financial advisers and investments at a high level, but this on-site placement has allowed me to see how the business operates behind the scenes. I learned about the importance of client administration, paraplanning, and their essential roles in making everything run smoothly,” he explained.
One of the standout moments of George’s placement was attending investment committee meetings, where he observed real-time decision-making processes that would directly impact clients.
As he looks ahead to his future career,
George encourages other students to seize work experience opportunities in the financial sector. He also believes companies should offer more short-term placements and apprenticeship routes to help young people gain early exposure to the industry.
“Work placements don’t have to be long—even a couple of weeks can make a huge difference. More companies should consider offering structured apprenticeships so young people can gain experience and develop their skills while progressing in one firm,” he suggested.
Baggette + Co Wealth Management remains committed to supporting young professionals and providing meaningful experiences for students interested in careers in financial planning and wealth management.
Jo Hjalmas, Managing Director at Baggette + Co, commented:
“We were delighted to have George with us for the past nine weeks, and it’s been fantastic to see his enthusiasm and curiosity grow throughout his time here.
“At Baggette + Co, we believe in nurturing young talent and providing hands-on experiences that help shape future careers. George has been a brilliant addition to the team, and he has a wonderfully rewarding career in financial planning ahead of him.”
In addition to supporting local schools throughout Dorset, Baggette + Co has worked with Poole & Bournemouth College and Bournemouth University, offering placements and mentorship to young people—a commitment the firm intends to continue for years to come.

The chamber has been supporting businesses for over 100 years, encouraging and inspiring businesses of all sizes. We’ve helped many people to find their feet in the local business community, by providing an environment where they can connect with likeminded people. We played an important role in the establishment of the Weymouth BID, in whose operation we take a keen interest.
SWRAC is an Independent Specialist College supporting young adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to gain the skills, confidence, and experience needed for adulthood — with a strong emphasis on employment, independence, and community involvement. They work closely with employers to help them unlock the value of a largely untapped workforce. By partnering with businesses across sectors, they provide Supported Internships, on-the-job coaching, and free training for staff — all designed to remove barriers and build confidence around employing individuals with learning difficulties or neurodiverse conditions such as Autism and ADHD.
Their message is simple: employing people with SEND makes great business sense. Lower turnover, strong focus, high motivation, and a fresh perspective are just a few of the benefits employers tell us they gain. And with recruitment challenges facing many sectors, we offer a meaningful solution that’s also great for your team culture and social value goals.

The starting point for adopting AI in an organisation lies in having an agreed AI Statement.
A guiding document that sets out how you will, and will not, use AI. It acts as a foundation to ensure your business uses AI effectively, legally and ethically.
As models continue to improve, your organisation’s use of AI is as much a brand decision as a technology one.
Setting clear guidance for your team on the use cases for AI also communicates your values effectively to suppliers and partners. How do we want to position our use of AI to our team, potential hires, partners or customers?
We’ve seen stories around AI Hallucinations in the press recently, with journalists being “lied” to – it’s important your team understand why this happens and have checks in place on any AI process.
Whether you actively choose to use AI in your organisation or not, it’s being added to the tools you use and “the AI made a mistake” is never acceptable.
In our Campfire AI training we start by explaining how a Large Language Model works as a “Spicy Autocomplete” to help attendees understand these behaviours and incorporate checks to ensure you make best use of AI.
Join us at our Campfire AI workshop to gain a deeper understanding of AI and ensure your business stays ahead. Visit dorsetchamber.com/events to book your spot.
