Built almost entirely in raw concrete, a natural palette of sandstone and wood with muted colours, vivid Indian art and landscape are brought together in different compositions in each of the internal volumes. A large garden on the north penetrating up to the internal courtyard between rooms has partial shadows at most times of the day allowing it to be used in the extensive summers too.
18 SCREENS, LUCKNOW Lucknow has a rich heritage with numerous buildings dating back to the 18th century. The site for this house is located along a busy arterial road and is on the peripheral edge of an extensive plotted development for private homes. Keeping the location and the surrounding in mind, the house is inspired by the traditional Indian courtyard house. As the temperatures in the long summer months are more than 35°C, with the sun in the southern hemisphere. The architect has incorporated patterned screens inspired by traditional Indian architecture and the famous Lucknow ‘chikan’ embroidery sheath. These screens not only provide shelter from the sun but creates different light patterns throughout the day and mitigate traffic noise from the busy arterial road on the southern side. This six-bedroom house is interspersed with sheltered open terraces and landscaped gardens around a two-floor-high naturally ventilated courtyard. Large glass windows on the northern side allow indirect light to infuse the internal spaces of the house. Varying volumetric proportions with differing sectional spaces create an individual identity for each living space with the courtyard cohesively integrating them.
A series of experiences are created in this house that by its design facilitates natural ventilation and sunlight within and is simultaneously contextual to the location, sun articulation, tradition, culture, and social aspects.

Aria Hotel is located on a gently contoured rising 9M towards the South with the entry at the lowest level in the North. The property is situated in the wine-growing region of India. The structure on the North faces a large river and a dam with hills beyond; while the Southern side rises into hills near the site. The client’s requirements included a large banquet hall of 15,000 sq ft in addition to 60 rooms and other facilities. Since the banquet hall would have large gatherings its access is planned directly from the road frontage at the lowest level of the site. The public facilities including the hotel lobby, restaurant, bar, spa and business centre occupy a higher level 6 meters above the banquet hall entered directly from an ascending approach road. The rooms at the higher level are oriented to face the river or hills in the South with open circulation spaces and naturally ventilated and sky-lit courtyards. Each level of the hotel is integrated with the natural contours of the site, minimizing land cutting and landfill. No soil was taken out of the site or brought into the site while constructing, making the construction both economical and sustainable. Over 50 percent of the walls are built with natural black basalt stone available near the site.
10
All the circulation spaces are naturally lit and ventilated rendering the building energyefficient. Solar panels on the rooftop, over the banquet kitchen, and in parking areas generate 50 per cent of the electrical energy required for the hotel. Rainwater harvesting tanks, with water recycling and reuse further add to the sustainable methods adopted for the design of this hotel.
Aria Hotel is designed contextually, responding to the site contours, the views of the surroundings, the climate, and the materials creating a web of experiences within its different volumes. This hotel is contextual to the site’s location, climate, and the client’s brief, amalgamating them cohesively.
ARIA HOTEL

Built of locally sourced bricks, sandstone, and lime plaster with local craftsmen and contract labour from the immediate vicinity, water recycling, rainwater harvesting, and solar panels for energy generation. The house is built sustainably and is climate responsive.
12
A curvilinear punctuated envelope surrounds the house creating interstitial semi-open spaces all along the perimeter with deeper recesses on the garden-facing sides. This envelope reduces the heat gain substantially whilst providing sheltered open spaces around the house to each room. Designed to mitigate heat gain in response to the hot avid climate of its location, this envelope keeps the entire house cool in the hot summer months with temperatures over 40°C for eight months of the year.
This sculptural house is contextual to its surroundings, the climate, and the owners’ need of creating an interesting play of volumes, open enclosed, and semi-enclosed spaces at every level. The design creates energy-efficient spaces with reduced heat gain and indirect natural light in each part of the house.
Mirai House of Arches
Designed on a small corner plot of 622 sq.m. within a residential villa layout, Mirai is a contextual house in response to the hot desert climate of Rajasthan. Based on the location, the Southern and Eastern sides have minimum open space with adjacent villas on those sides to be built in the future. The Northern and Western sides facing a road junction have more open spaces with garden areas and existing trees. Planned for a family with three generations living together, this house has three levels with four bedrooms, two living rooms, a gym, and a study. Sectionally, the heights within are varied with an interesting play of volumes in each part of the house, bedrooms of a single volume, dining area of a double volume, and a living area of an intermediate 1.5 level volume.

A series of architectural volumes create this office space for a furniture contract company within their factory. Volumes within volumes lend each functional part of the office their own identity. The large reception space is punctuated by a 36’ high seating area in the form of elliptical pods floating in a shallow reflecting pool at one end and a landscaped courtyard at the other end.
Towards one side, a 36’ high multifunctional space with movable modular platforms is designed to be used as a furniture display space, a seminar hall, or a social interaction space. A cantilevered sweeping stairway spirals asymmetrically through this volume connecting the three levels of the office.
Each of the spaces within the office is formed by elliptical volumes that create organic circulation spaces between them. A material palette of glass, metallic paint walnut, and wood, sound insulation boards, cork, and concrete accentuate each area differently.
Lighting is integrated with the design in multiple ways. Perforated partitions of wood fused with Plexiglas, ceilings of pyramidal modules, and a conference room with an installation of aluminum pipes are all infused with lighting. On each level, large openings allow natural light into the internal spaces from the Northern side and unobstructed views of the factory on the Southern side.
Each of the workstation areas, the discussion rooms, the cabins, conference room, multifunctional space and video conferencing room based upon the client’s brief is individual in identity and arranged organically over three levels forming an architectural interior with a composition of varying volumes.

Indian culture is known for its vivid use of colour in traditional crafts, festivities, and clothing.
Built economically with emphasis on natural ventilation and natural sunlight, the buildings are very energy efficient. Fly ash brick walls, water recycling, rainwater harvesting, north orientation, and sheltered outdoor spaces reduce heat gain. The entire electrical energy required is harnessed from the residual energy generated in the cement plant nearby. Studios 90 is a simple, energy-efficient residential building that responds to its site, and the climate of the location and alludes to the culture and social aspects of the users.
16
The composition of coloured cuboids creates this sculptural residential project. The brief for these mid-rise buildings was to create studio apartments, a hostel, and a guest house on the perimeter of a housing project for a residential township, to house the working people of a new cement plant. Angularly stepped in the layout, each of the rooms is oriented towards the north in response to the hot climate of Kudla, in Karnataka. Temperatures exceed 35°C for eight months of the year in this region. Based on the brief, 18 studio apartments, 54 hostel rooms, and 18 guest house rooms are created in four and five-level buildings facing large landscaped areas & a large playground on the Commonnortheast.facilities including a cafeteria, games room, lounge & gym are housed at the ground Roomslevel. opening into sheltered north-facing balconies occupy the upper floors.
STUDIOS 90
India is the only country that celebrates Holi, a festival of colours annually. Three of these vivid primary colours – red, blue, and yellow highlight the cantilevered balconies to each room creating an identity and simultaneously enhancing the sculptural look of the buildings.

The Courtyard Office
17
Varying from two to four levels sectionally the office floors are lifted from the ground at the southwest and north-east sides to facilitate a south-westerly breeze through the courtyard. The northeast and northwest corners of the building too are lifted creating singular large volumes at these ends to allow visual contact between floors while housing a cafeteria and a library. With all areas naturally ventilated and naturally lit, the indoor spaces are breathable and not dependent on air conditioning and artificial lighting thus rendering the building energy efficient. The external fins are angled as per the direction of the sun reducing heat gain and glare and creating a comfortable environment for the users. The large internal open landscaped courtyard has sheltered open spaces that can be used throughout the day. It is shaded on all sides and acts as a gathering space for large events and recreational activities.

A linear office space twists organically in plan creating a large landscaped courtyard within it.
The courtyard office derives its principles from the traditional Indian courtyard houses creating office spaces that vary in volume and in orientation allowing open spaces to be integrated with enclosed ones and creating energy-efficient workspaces.

The client who has been associated with Christopher Benninger and his team for over a decade gave a one-line brief to `make it unique’. The site is spread over 35 acres, out of which about 23 acres were demarcated for the construction of the academic area. A part of the site already had a hostel and some associated residential facilities that were retained.
Christopher Charles Benninger has designed BAJAJ INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY in Wardha, yet another landmark project and the latest addition to his distinguished design portfolio.
Designed by Senior Architect Christopher Charles Benninger
The Bajaj Institute of Technology is located in Wardha a historic town in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. The city is famous for its Gandhi Ashram and various institutions built by the Bajaj family, through the Shiksha Mandal Group of Institutions. The striking edifice designed by Professor Benninger is hard to miss even from a far distance. As one comes closer to this campus, the beautiful murals embossed within the ceilings, the wonderful ‘jack-arched’ ceilings, the mystical triangles acting as large “eyes out to the world” of this campus; that also has a complex and interesting system of bridges and staggered walkways, are a variety of spaces as one moves through the campus. The attractive entry and internal community courtyards all tie this creation into a matrix of visual and design ideas that are sure to create a stimulating learning experience for the students on the campus.
Explaining the design concept Prof Benninger says, “The design process started in the studio the areas for design were factored, not as per the mere space and design standards as set down in various academic books, but as per good design practices and the practical knowhow gained by the studio while executing various projects over the last quarter of a century. The resulting area program was almost double of what was prescribed by the All India Council of Technical Education, (on which Professor Benninger is a Western Region Member!).”

20
The design aligns along an East-West axis. There were several factors to be considered, of which the climate played a strong role. Having designed climatically responsive structures in Vidarbha, the team knew the importance of shaded walkways and crossventilation to the inhabitants. This fact was all the more important as there was no air conditioning proposed in the functional areas and that too in an area where temperatures cross 45 degrees for at least three months in a year (though it should be added that the client decided at a late stage to add an evaporative cooling system that could be seamlessly integrated within the building format).

Professor Benninger conceived the campus as one large building dispersed over three levels, connected by a multi-level group of walkways and bridges, overlooking one another. It was a conscious decision to create a low-rise building fabric, creating a large central space for the academic community. The continuity of the built form was a very important factor, as it made access between various functions of the campus independent of the climate. The movement through these covered walkways is an experience that binds the campus together, giving one an expansive view either into the central plaza, or the horizon beyond. These passages form the nerve center of the campus integrating various departments, laboratories, and classrooms within them. As one sees the life of students passing by through the spaces, gazing out of the various cut-outs dotting the façades; the facades become a live canvas for the mosaic. Light, shadows, and the interplay between them along these internal streets and the numerous vegetated courtyards, through which these streets pass is an experiential wonder. These streets linking the three levels of the campus are also staggered giving double-height spaces that interplay with connecting bridges, and stairways, that also flow along with the movements. These courtyards are also the primary source of ambient light for the classrooms and laboratories. Deriving light and ventilation through these heavily planted courtyards have a soothing effect, bringing down the ambient temperature in these spaces and reducing the load on the evaporative cooling system.
21

23
Overall, this is a new-age climate-sensitive space designed to create a stimulating ambiance for the learners.
The entry experience is highlighted by the triple-height entrance foyer with a focal staircase. The administrative functions flank this entrance foyer. This foyer opens onto the central plaza whose periphery is lined by skewed classroom modules punctured by pathways and courtyards. The classrooms all skewed individually are oriented to get the best visual connection to the central space as well as avoid the heat by having windows with fins oriented away from the direction of the peak summer sun. the skewed forms in the internal space are in contrast to the geometric straight lines of the rooms, and the external façade, where Prof Benninger has put his unique touch by using triangular apertures as the “eyes of the campus,” looking out at the world around. The plaza is flanked by the library on the end opposite the entrance and administration, with the workshop as a backdrop, terminating this long space. A large steel roofed structure with multiple educational functions. The workshop, encompassing an area of over fifteen thousand square feet has the western wall which is a large aluminum jaali that filters in light, restrains the heat as well as allows for the free movement of air.
Windows of the habitable spaces which open out on the central plaza are lined with vertical louvers. Though these louvers are fixed they are inclined to the orientation of the classroom and the façade’s position concerning the peak summer sun. These louvers played at different angles in the different modules add an interesting feature to the fabric of the courtyard.
The volumes created by the design elements, and their spatial interactions are the two essential elements of the design, with the materials palette supporting this unique fabric. Plain white stucco plaster walls with exposed concrete pillars and arched ceilings are powerful design elements. The internal courtyards are shaded by metal pergolas and along with the metal handrails, painted with anti-rust finishes are the only materials that are not in natural colors. Flooring is built of polished Kota stone with highlights in Jaisalmer and granite. Vaulted concrete slabs in the passages, and the classrooms, left exposed, define the ceiling planes. The modules of the vaults in the ceiling also calibrate the spaces all across the campus in a definitive manner giving one a sense of scale and proportion that binds all the disparate functions of the campus together.

With a refreshed contemporary design true to the TAJ Hotels brand identity, Ar. Reza Kabul’s design for the TAJ Skyline, Ahmedabad combines local influence with guest experience and comfort.

The Guest-CentricModern, Design

25
Internationally acclaimed Ar. Reza Kabul founder of ARK has three decades of proven expertise in designing projects of various scales and typologies. Reza has recently designed another landmark project TAJ Skyline, Ahmedabad. This meticulously designed property is the new landmark in Ahmedabad. The design team has kept in mind the changing trends in the hospitality industry, like the guest experience, comfort and convenience while designing the hotel.
Ar. Reza understands that the feel and ambience have to be immensely attractive, and so are the comfort and functionality of the property. Adding insight on the design and concept of the hotel Reza Kabul adds, “We are here to fulfil such increasing demands. In today’s era, people are inclined towards appealing hotel rooms and fine restaurants. The Taj Skyline embraces the local culture of Gujarat and India in all forms.”

26
The entryway installation created by a lighting designer is an ode to Navratri, largely celebrated culture in Ahmedabad, and across the country. ARK has skillfully explored the core value and added a localized design element. The admirable lighting installation with its forms and waves is inspired by the swirls of the flowy ghagra while women dance away to their favourite Navaratri songs. The Abla work is depicted by the lenses which will refract light and create unique illusions in the space. Two massive sculptures depicting the karigars that spend endless days creating intricate patterns on wood to stamp fabrics have created the beautiful final product. Block print motifs are a major design element across the Taj Skyline. It is subtly visible in the backdrop of the reception, the lit entryway ceiling, and the all-day dining dividers. The designs seamlessly blend into the overall aesthetic of the space.

The peacock motif is evident across the Taj Skyline, in the artwork, furnishings, as well as the overall colour palette which is representative of grace, joy, beauty and love. The green and blue colours of the peacock in furnishing complement the brown colour of natural wood. The Taj Skyline embraces Indian culture in all forms, and the design incorporates elements close to the local culture of Gujarat. The Indian Peacock, the national bird of India, is a symbol of grace, joy, beauty and love. We have tried to incorporate similar features and a touch of our national bird in our design. This also includes inspirations from the intricate latticework windows at the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque in Ahmedabad, as well as the Gamthi motifs of block print that date back to the medieval ages of Gujarat.
29

30
The Taj Skyline embraces the culture of Gujarat in all forms and incorporates elements close to the local culture and context of the state. The artwork across the walls of Shamiana reflects various aspects of monochromatic art pieces by local artists. The accent wall here is representative of the local architecture. You can see various landmarks across the state that encompass the design aesthetic of the state of Gujarat. The Moroccan Rooftop Restaurant at the TAJ Skyline reflects a similar design aesthetic that we experience across the entire property. The aboriginal Moroccan designs include extensive latticework used as perforations and partition walls and symmetrical square designs which can be considered parallel to block prints. The Taj Skyline offers a seamless guest experience right from the entryway to the room. The selection of materials keeps in mind that the over aesthetic, and the ambience is immensely welcoming, comfortable and functional.

Defence
32 Architecture
The new Defence Office Complexes designed by Ahluwalia Contracts (India) Ltd., is spread over an built up area of 93,000 sqm (44,000 sqm at KG Marg and 49,000 sqm at Africa Avenue) are designed to relocate the existing defence establishments and accommodate around 7,000 officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces.
GPM & Planners designed the new Office Complexes using new and constructionsustainabletechnology.
DesignTrendsetting
Architects

The new office complexes are state-of-the-art and energy-efficient, with comprehensive security management measures, providing modern, secure, and functional working spaces. One of the defining features of these buildings is the use of new and sustainable construction technology called LGSF (Light gauge steel frame). A nonpolluting, dry construction method is used to make its execution environmentally friendly. To reduce the construction time, pre-engineered structural members such as structural steel columns and beams are used. The use of standardised materials, PEB structures, and modular practices like aluminium formwork and jump formwork also substantiated to be very effective. Another significant shift in the design strategy was to create large column-free spaces that can offer a chance to introduce flexibility into the buildings so that they can be made adaptable as per need.
34
The building has a dynamic facade, cladded with ventilated terracotta tiles to provide thermal comfort. Being a low-maintenance material, it provides acoustic insulation from the outside which reduces noise levels up to 15 percent. The solid mass of the envelope is broken down by the addition of large clear glazed windows bringing adequate natural light. Keeping in mind the global office trends, the interiors of the buildings have a strong sense of space planning, and use of technology and materials. Easy-to-install, maintain and durable materials that are fire-rated, energy-efficient, and aesthetically pleasing are used to design workplaces. A mix of enclosed and open spaces, conforming to the norms of universal accessibility, are provided for privacy and a comfortable coworking culture.

35
security management measures are also implemented within the buildings considering that these office spaces shall be used by defence personnel.
As a CPWD-certified Green building, the design utilises resource-efficient green technology, thereby promoting environmentfriendly practices. The planning of the building blocks is done to ensure no existing trees are cut on-site. Additionally, a combination of evergreen, deciduous, flowering trees are planted to provide shade and enhance air quality. To further keep the air quality in check, air quality monitoring devices are used. Other sustainable practices used in the project include rainwater harvesting and the treatment of wastewater. Part of the treated wastewater is utilised for flushing, using dual plumbing systems, and gardening, while the surplus is supplied to the New Delhi Municipal Council. Structurally, consisting of pre-engineered structural components, only nuts and bolts were used for assembly on site without any requirement for welding, thus saving on energy consumption.
“The past year has been challenging, but a change in approach and imbibing new practices into the design has helped us tide over the crisis. Bringing in modular design and new technologies for such large-scale projects can save time and ensure quality, leading to a rise in the frequency of construction.” says Mitu Mathur, Director, GPM Architects & Planners.
The Terracotta façade reduces solar heat gain, reducing air conditioning load and saving energy by 30 percent. The main grid is connected to solar panels of 520 KWp capacity and the solar energy generated is used for solar-supported street lights. Additionally, the use of occupancy sensor-based lighting systems and air conditioning systems saves unwanted wastage of electricity, reducing energy Comprehensiveconsumption.

The Defence Office complexes are the manifestation of changing work culture and priorities of the government with the optimal and proper use of available land. This project has the potential to be an example of how, today, we can speed up construction while minimising activity on-site and without disturbing the natural environment.

A good client-designer rapport forms the basis of a good design that befits the needs of the client. Such is the work of principal designer Ketan Sheth of Goldmine Project Consultants.
Refined Luxury!
Mumbai -based Ketan Sheth designs a contemporary apartment for Ashesh Doshi in Surat that is characterized by clean lines, subtle colours and a refined material palette.
Acknowledged for designing high-end apartments, commercial spaces, and retail spaces to name a few; Ketan has an impressive portfolio.

39
Another important aspect is that the client’s family is well travelled and well versed with design trends and materials that helped Ketan and his team in designing this luxurious space while simultaneously reflecting the homeowner’s lifestyle and taste.
Exotic marbles, light fixtures, chandeliers, unique artefacts and high-end furniture are some of the design elements that lend a touch of sophistication to the overall decor.”
The entrance foyer has rhombus-shaped glass mirrors on one of the walls that lend an artistic touch to this space, further similar patterns are replicated as inlay patterns on the flooring. The panelling on the walls aesthetically conceals service points. The spacious living area is aesthetically segregated into two seating areas, for effective space utilization. One of the walls is provided with an uninterrupted flow of intricately designed marble that is skillfully framed with lighting to create a perfect backdrop for this space. Further rich materials, textures and bright hues with exquisite artefacts add colours, patterns and grandeur to the space.
Spread over an area of 5,500 sq. ft., the apartment has formal and informal living areas, a dining, kitchen, five bedrooms with spacious walk-in wardrobes and huge bathrooms, a home theatre, temple and a personal office room. Striking the right balance between functionality and aesthetics, Ketan has designed a modern and contemporary concept that enriches the exquisiteness of the home. Dominated by an overall white colour scheme subtle hints of bright colours used in the right proportion create the right ambience. Adding more insight into the design process Ketan adds, “Rather than sticking to stereotype concepts, we have experimented with fine detailing and creativity in every part of the house, keeping in mind that they don’t go out of style.

The bedrooms have been mindfully designed considering individual preference. Exuding elegance and a relaxing ambience, the bed and furniture detailing are done to maintain harmony in the design lines, flowing in the room.
The daughter’s bedroom has been defined with minimal hexagons to give it an edgy touch. Done in vibrant pink tones, the curtains with floral touch and mother-of-pearl inlay work, enhance the magnificence of the space.
The selective furniture creates a striking contrast to the white tones, ingeniously balancing the exuberance of the space. The ceiling is bestowed with alabaster hanging lights and gold leafing further accentuates this space. The window curtains have been embellished with semi-precious stones, accentuating the luxury feature in this design Furtherscheme.the living area seamless leads to the dining area. The aesthetics of this space with the colour tones blend perfectly with those of the living room. The large leaf painting on the wall brings a fresh vibe into the space. This space with its designer dining table and chairs, elegant hanging lights, and subtle panelling details lend an opulent character to it.
The master bedroom is a play of straight lines, enticed with white and beige tones with a dash of emerald green that resembles prosperity and also happens to be the client’s choice. The curtains narrate a tale of falling stars.
“There is a neat and defined finishing accorded to the entire room, be it the bed corners or the shutter opening, ensuring minimal hardware visibility,” says Ketan.
A small foyer leads to the son’s and daughter’s bedrooms. Here an exquisite painting of motherhood converts a mundane passage into an interesting nook.

Whether you are planning to redecorate or simply refresh your home, here are a few trends that are definitely worth considering.
49
The ideology of the store is simply “Attainable Luxury’ says Neeti. “We want everyone to have an opulent home, albeit an affordable one too, opulence is expensive should be a myth. I was born in Mumbai, India in 1979. My favourite structure (designed by someone else): I recently saw a home designed by Vishaka and Muninder Chowdhury for the Indian actor Abhay Deol, in Goa. In this home, I liked the tall ceilings and the extensive use of glass. The lush greenery surrounding seamlessly connects the outdoors with simple, elegant and minimalistic interiors. I am inspired by: I love Steve Cordnay’s simple yet classic designs. I love his use of earthy and white finishes. I admire Sara Sham, I love her spirit and her attitude. Design to me is: Design to me should be simple, elegant and easy to maintain. The home looks warm and inviting. A space should be designed to reflect the user’s personality. I wish I had designed (and how would that have been different from now): I don’t look at the design from that perspective. Because design is your own sensibility and no matter how much you like someone else’s work you will always tend to go back to your own style. And that’s what makes design beautiful. My worst design: I don’t really have the worst design. Every project is designed with great love and passion. Once I start designing then for me I am suddenly in a zone where I feel like I am designing for my own home so when I finish I feel the same joy and sense of accomplishment after each project is done. My best design: I think one of my best projects would have to be a house, I did in a small gated colony in rail Vihar. The turnaround was really phenomenal from how I was given the space. Another of my favourite projects was a home I did in Palam Vihar for a young couple. Small spaces always tend to end up looking just cute and gorgeous.
To unwind I (hobbies other than architecture): I love travelling, I think what you see through the lens of a traveller is unmatchable. I picked up knitting during the first lockdown and taught it to myself. It’s really the most therapeutic thing to do and really calms my nerves . I do love reading too but don’t do as much of it now as I used to.
My signature design element (one element without which no design of yours seems complete): I like to incorporate arches and cornices, as they lend a unique identity to any space.
If I was not an architect: I was a hotelier before this and I loved every day and every moment of it. If it weren’t for the crazy hours I would still do it.

Our life goal is to respect and practice the art of salvaging trees and transforming them into fine hardwood tables, and furniture in the most organic way possible. Each slab of wood that becomes a table can be traced back to an exact location, and reason for being felled, be it by natural causes, due to tree sickness, or danger to a nearby home www.simonsilverdesigns.com

You can choose from a myriad of styles, sizes, and materials. There are traditional chandeliers that are more ornate in design and filigree, lending an oldworld charm to the space. These are a bit expensive and suitable for spacious homes with a good ceiling-to-floor height. The magazine recommends crystal chandeliers to accentuate a glamorous and artistic decor. Crystal chandeliers are the most common option available. Their cut and size reflect light beautifully. Also, tiered chandeliers whose width/diameter increases in proportion to the length are also interesting options. These can be two or multi-tiered versions and can be found in classic, contemporary or rustic designs.
regal finishing touch. Opulence is the first word that comes to mind at the mention of chandeliers. Conventionally, this light fixture has been considered as an option, suitable only for those with lavish tastes and wealthy homes. But not anymore! Chandeliers have re-invented themselves, over the years, to suit both traditional and modern decor styles, and are now available at an affordable price range too. Chandeliers are the most dramatic and eyecatching way to light up a room. “A chandelier enlivens the entire area with its beauty and elegance. It can be used in your entrance hall, living and dining room, and bedroom.”

54 With quaint palaces now rendered as archeological sites and wealth display having several other manifestations, chandelier styles and sizes has evolved to suit homes with restricted means. Similarly, the availability of chandeliers in different materials and styles has developed over the years. They are available in glass, metal and wrought iron. Most modern chandeliers are moving from curved arms to geometrical accents. Options in polished nickel finishes with multifaceted etched glass, chrome starburst patterns or cylindrical designs are modern variants that you can source for your home. Drum and rustic chandeliers are other common styles. Drum chandeliers are usually used in areas where focused light is needed. The drum acts as a diffuser to get rid of the harshness of direct light, while still providing ample illumination and decoration. You can take decor co-ordination a step further with colour-infused glasses or fabric shade chandeliers. Coloured chandeliers are restricted to specific interior shades and themes. But if you want to change the interiors in the future, modifications can be quite easy.

56 As you are dealing with a heavy and, even, pricy lighting fixture, it is necessary to keep certain points in mind. Huge chandeliers work well in rooms with vaulted ceilings. An oversized chandelier in a heavily furnished or small room might look tacky and flashy. Do not make the mistake of overlooking the finer points of scale, installation requirements and how well the fixture will satisfy your lighting needs. Also, as they are not fixtures that can be easily moved around a space, it is necessary to position them perfectly. With their overpowering presence, chandeliers become the focal point of any room; they define a room’s style and alter its ambience. Hence, choose your chandeliers in tune with your decor style and personal taste, and lend a sense of sophistication to your home.

The nature-inspired elements are seen resonating throughout the entire space with elements like the larger-than-life tree installation in the premium dining section and the stunning custom-made floral and exotic mushroom motif light feature that wraps around the central seating.
As per Menon’s signature style, artists were called in to make unique wall art features that were inspired by pea pods. Explaining his design concept Sumessh Menon adds, “The name Juliette struck me as a feminine and later that translated into various design detailing like floral motifs and dreamy settings,” The custom-designed cosy seating with high-back chairs, communal tables, and sofas seating are some of the various seating options at this restaurant. Mumbai-based Interior designer Sachin Parab redefines simplicity with a minimalist material palette and decor.
Profile
The first floor has three bedrooms and the second floor has a gym, pantry, utility space and beautiful terrace.
Focus design studio OPC headed by Sachin Parab is known for his creatively designed high-end residential projects. He has designed some of the most opulent, plush and luxurious homes over the years. For this bungalow, Sachin struck the right balance between modern and contemporary styles for the interiors. Spread over an area of 5,000 sq ft and split over two levels, and located in Govandi, Mumbai, this space sees a skillful use of materials and colour scheme that has resulted in a personalized space. This bungalow has ground plus two levels. The ground floor has a living room, dining area, mandir and guest room with a beautiful open backyard.
The open kitchen in a grey and wood combination is admirable. The guest room is dominated by a brown colour scheme, where the designer has aesthetically used overtones of brown on shades, on shutters, and on an arch on the backdrop of the bed.
Innovative Design
The living cum dining room has sleek furniture that adds to the comfort zone of the user. The dining table is complemented by aesthetically designed chairs. One can’t miss the customized canvas painting by Artist Yogesh Barve on the beams, which lends an aesthetic touch to the otherwise mundane structure.
62
A little ahead is a mandir separated by creating a folding partition made of wood and PVD coated brush gold finish grill. Explaining the detailing Sachin says, “It also has a low-backlit ceiling with beautiful arches finished with alabaster and wood.”

The daughter’s room has a grey and black theme, which has an aluminum black coated slim frame with grey glass and a big round mirror with lots of storage next to it. The spacious master bedroom is designed like a suite that has a huge bed, while the side tables are placed against a decorative wall and a contemporary-styled Chaise Lounge seating. A little ahead is a coffee area with two single chairs forming informal seating areas. The parents’ room has a contemporary classic flair. There is a great amount of detailing and sees overtones of pastel shades, this area has connected the terrace. The house is a mix of Sachin’s aesthetic designs and the client’s personality, which in turn is a space where the three generational live happily.

The hospitality industry is booming, and with fierce competition, every restaurant owner wants a unique decor and ambience to serve their customized delicacies. Moving away from the usual design for a restaurant Interior designer Sachin Parab, Focus design studio OPC has given a different and opulent feel to Yokoso Sizzlers in Nalstop, Pune. As the name suggests, the restaurant’s decor is inspired by Japanese cuisine. This restaurant spread over an area of 4,500 sq. ft is spread over two levels. Explaining the design concept Interior designer Sachin Parab says, “One of the challenges in the project design was a tight budget and the double height ceiling.” His response was to employ an extensive palette of colours, exclusive furnishings and custom-designed light fixtures to enhance the double height.

As the owner wanted to retain the old flooring, here the design team designed a graphic print on the flooring, to break the monotony. Further finer details like a wooden wall fan, customised wall art and pine wood checker frame add value to the decor. “The ground floor has two sections, one with a live kitchen and seating, and other sections has a stage for live performances and celebrations like birthday parties, orchestra etc. It also has a colourful hand-painted mock-tail counter with a beautiful backlit display.” There are different types of seating spread across the floor, where the customized colourful wall art by artist Santosh Padelkar accentuates the overall Japanese theme of the restaurant. This multi-cuisine restaurant has a lot to offer with various options of delicacies and drinks truly making this place worth while.

Meticulously curated design elements, balanced use of fine metal, glass, stone and tailored selections of fabrics and furniture exudes an inviting ambience in Aparna Kaushik Design Group’s new office in Noida. The Aparna Kaushik Design Group’s new office in Noida is a striking example of the firm’s distinctive design aesthetics. The four-storyed structure holds a graceful, symmetric silhouette composed of clean lines, large balconied windows and a subtle exterior palette of warm grey and antique brass hues. Conceptualised to represent the firm’s versatile talents and serve as a creative sanctum for its designers, the office embodies the classically elegant and thoughtfully calibrated spaces that the firm consistently designs for their discerning clientele.

The intimate premises, ensconced by manicured Benjamina Weeping Fig trees and black Baselana marble planters, emanates calm seclusion. The entryway, hallways and lobbies are a study in interaction between light and colours. The Calacatta gold marble floors are beset by delicate gold-framed canvases of architectural art and attentively placed bronze sculptures. One such sculpture of a pensive, seated man bears the Sanskrit words, Vasudev Kutumbhakamb - `The world is one family’: a phrase that defines the firm’s philosophy and design ethos.
67

First, they choose large artworks featuring trompe-l’oeil to hang on the neutral coloured walls. Literally translated as “to deceive the eye” the perspective-play of this technique was made popular during the Renaissance to add illusory depth to closed spaces.
68
Second, ceiling heights were scaled down to an intimate level using simple wainscoting, which was then carved with intricate detailing that mirrors the classical panelling depicted in surrounding Thepaintings.workstations and conference rooms, to account for long meetings with large groups, are designed primarily around principles of stylised comfort and seamless functionality. Devoid of partitions to enhance collaborative interactions, work zones are defined only by furniture placement. A teardrop chandelier with antique brass stems hangs from the ceiling; reiterating the firm’s thematic focus on fusing contemporary form with classical materials. Carpet floors, soft toned fabrics and swathes of natural light further add warmth to these areas that accommodate a majority of daily operations.
Another bronze sculpture, inspired by the principal architect’s own love for modern and impressionist art, depicts a ponytailed girl dressed much like the ballerinas in paintings by Edgar Degas. Contrary to the stance of poised dancers, however, her upward gaze and unrehearsed demeanor symbolises the childlike wonder of free creative thought.
Further emphasising the firm’s inventive and transcultural design culture is a pagoda chandelier in the elevator lobby. The midcentury design was inspired by a vintage book discovered in the bazaars of Daryaganj, an old Delhi flea market. Intimate spatial nooks clad in neutral colours and fitted with generous bookshelves are designated to be private work forums or discussion rooms.
The designers employed clever styles of spatial reformation to deepen a sense of seclusion and retreat in these areas.

A master suite, which serves as Aparna Kaushik’s office features a trompe-l’oeil painting of a domed palatial banquet hall in the backdrop. An antique-style desk by Alexander Theodore includes accent legs joined by a sharp crossing stretcher, reminiscent of colonial-era regency. Gold lighting accents, tall, lush plants in beaten brass planters, silver-grey upholstery and a subtle-toned Persian rug strike a compelling balance against dark wood floors and a collection of seasoned books gathered from years of travel and research. Together, this assemblage of artfully chosen multi-era pieces adds an effortless yet dignified character to the room.
70 More distinguished spaces within the office include the principal architect’s cabin, rooftop client lounge and an exquisite skyline room with panoramic views.
The ornate rooftop client’s lounge is set against an expressway skyline and arresting views of the city. A skylight ceiling window channels diffused natural light into the room adding further elevation and warmth to the distinguished space. A lantern-style chandelier embodies the tailored blend of Late-Gothic pointedness and Baroque opulence. Designed to match lighting silhouettes seen at Palais de Versailles, it was handcrafted by seasoned artisans in India. Wall-to-wall bookshelves and an assortment of small, framed prints and illustrations pair with the inviting comfort of plushcushioned furniture. Chinese-style porcelain vases on a marble mantle beset with a rich-colored painting of a leopard bind the room’s intricate collections of artworks, artefacts and memorabilia - drawing a sense of being in the private gallery of a curious, creative and well-traveled Theresident.skyline room is perhaps the most unique of all the spaces in the office. The rectangular space wrapped in wall-to-ceiling windows, a sweeping balcony with emerald foliage and unparalleled views of the horizon is left largely empty. Against one discreet corner, atop a Persian rug sits one muted grey armchair framed by a palm-like indoor plant and flanked by a circular side table featuring a stone portrait sculpture. The expanse of the space along with the immensity of its skyline views and its bare minimum furnishings evoke a resounding aura of peace - which aptly makes this room a sanctuary for focused work, new ideas and creative sojourns. The space aptly speaks to the spirit of an innovative design firm devoted to placing historic and global design heuristics within exceptionally crafted spaces that nurture immersive experiences.

As one enters the office space, they are welcomed by the reception and waiting area, both of which are designed in colours of sunrise to create a vibrant, yet elegant colour palette. Connecting with the staff area visually as well as volumetrically, a uniform flooring pattern creates a flow of spaces throughout the office. The reception desk is clad in tiles to recreate the aesthetics and textures of a rug with hand-painted tassels to add quirky details.

The staff area is composed of a chair and table pattern as per the client’s request, creating an open plan layout. Crafted for a young millennial workforce, the staff area offers a variety of seating and experiences. Cushioned along the windows, community bar-style seating and meeting pods are created to foster community building within the team as well as promote casual conversations. The combination of meeting rooms as well as meeting pods, allows for a formal as well as informal meeting environment amongst the workforce. The community area is designed with bright sage and red seating, in line with the sunrise palette, while adding bold and vibrant elements to the space. The beams running through the space have been coated in vinyl to imitate the effects of laminates to create a softer, unobtrusive background. The internal partitions used to create the meeting rooms are clad with the same wallpaper to add a sense of continuity.

Flanked onto the ceiling, the art installation travels from the reception area to the staff area. Custom designed for the space, the installation is composed of an aluminium meshwork in neutral tones. Explaining the design details Saniya Kantawala says, “Conceptually inspired by paper and its characteristic to envelop and open up, the topography of the installation is designed to reflect the juxtaposed furniture layouts in the spaces below. The installation is created as an individual hexagonal meshwork transforming into modules, then layered together to create the stunning art Aspiece.”one moves toward the director’s area, the passage is lined with vertical panels to create a sense of rhythm and linearity. The powder room is located along the passage with the panels used to conceal the door of the powder room by creating an intriguing entry into a completely different space.

77
The powder room is designed with a combination of cutwork and mirror pieces creating an illusion of a neverending space. As one enters the director’s area the dedicated reception and waiting zone greets them into the space. The reception area is adorned with frames left for the client to fill in with their keepsakes from their philanthropic work for underprivileged artistically inclined children. With a whitewashed veneer finish coupled with a salmonpink velvet backdrop creates the setting for the reception table. The open seating for the legal department and the personal assistants for the directors, allow for open and spacious planning. As one moves into the space, the passageway is articulated with simple cutwork tiles leading to a library unit in the centre and the director’s cabins on both sides. The directors’ cabins are designed as pods with bespoke details for each of the directors. The first director’s cabin is adorned with a bespoke blue paint finish table with muted back panels and storage units. The ceiling is finished in veneer finish with sleek groves and brass inlay to add a touch of elegance. The second director’s cabin, located across the conference room, has a whitewashed veneer ceiling treatment in a chevron pattern to accentuate the space with a neutral ceiling finish complementing the velvet finish wall treatment. The conference room table is designed to create a scribble effect with wire mesh zig-zag on a wooden base finished with PU lamination.
The Soch office creates a space that fosters workspace wellbeing. Plants of a variety of sizes accentuate spaces around the office. Designed for a young millennial workforce, the office design maximizes the available space to offer comfortable, yet exciting experiences full of vibrancy.

Emery Studio unveils the Trim Collection by Barovier&Toso. The Trim collection is designed by using the ice glass technique. It features modular pieces like reeds or a hexagonal crosssection. The new collection includes the suspension lamp and the ceiling model that lends a dramatic touch to contemporary architectural spaces with its energy and its sculptural beauty. The hexagonal tube made with the `ice’ technique generates spherical volumes that fit perfectly into the architecture of spaces, almost becoming its extension. As per individual requirements, the position of the modules can be customized during installation into a symmetrical and conventional order or into a messy shape. This technique merges traditional manufacturing with eclectic forms, giving life to new creations that are sure to add a new dimension to the Sourcesspace.Unlimited
