BillingsleyCreekwaspristineandclearwith swimmingholescollectingkidsfromall overthevalleytopartakeinitscoolingeffect. Ontheranchwehadaspecialplace inthecreekthathadasandbarbeachleadingtoaswimmingholeabout5feet deep. Onecouldspendhoursplayingand splashingandswimminganddiggingminiatureroadsandstreamsinthesand,capturingourimaginationaswewentbackand forthfromsandtowater.
Afavoriteactivityaswegotalittleolder wassittingininnertubesandfloatingfrom ourranchtotheTupper’saboutamile downstream. BeckyTupperandmysister, Lora,whowerethesameage,spentcountlesshoursofadventureastheydangled theirfeetintotheverycoldwater. Withoutacare,theymeanderedwherethegentlymovingcurrenttookthemoverrocks andmossbelowandfloatedthroughair bubblesreleasedbytherainbow trout. AfterreachingtheTupper’smuch largerswimmingholeinBillingsleyCreek, theywouldscrambletoshoreanddryoff withwhatevertowelwashandyattheTuppers’home. Afterwhich,Momwoulddrive overtogetLorawhobeamedfromthe calmyetexhilaratingadventure. Beckyand Loraremainedfriendsthroughtheyears, sharinghighsandlowswithfaithinthe Lordbeingthegluebindingthemtogether. DavidTupperremembersswarmsofkids swimmingandjumpingintotheBigSwimmingHoleatthebottomoftheTupper gradeeverysummer. Hiscousin,Nick Nieffenegger,ofWendell,sevenyearshis senior,decidedtogiveDavidanoldfashionedswimminglesson.Oneday,at theageoffive,Davidwasmindinghisown businessandwadingaroundtheoutside edgesofthedeepwater.Nick,seeinghis willing,muchyoungercousin,coaxedhim tocomeovernearandbeforeyouknowit, Nickgaveagiantpush. Davidplungedinto thewater.Nickappearedtowalkaway tellinghimtoswim!Davidtookallhisarm strengthtoswimtotheedgeandpullhimselftosolidland. As hewalkedawayfromthesceneheturned backandsaid,“swimordrown!” Sheremembersthefeelingofthewaterall aroundandwasaimingfortheglimmerof lightonthewaterassheurgentlymoved hersmallarmstogettothesandbarisland downstream. Shefoundthesolidsandand pulledherselfupexhaustedandupsetby herolderbrother.Hehadbeenwatching atasafedistancetomakesureshedidn’t drown.Beckyhaslovedtoswimever since.
SwimminglessonsattheGoodingoutdoor communitypoolwerestandardfarefor mostofusinthosedays. Idaho Department of Education Awards $1.53 Million in Federal Grants for
Out-of-School Learning Programs (BOISE)–EightIdahoschooldistrictsandtwocommunityorganizationswillreceivenew grantawardstoprovideyouthacademicandenrichmentopportunitiesthroughtheNitaM.Lowey21stCenturyCommunityLearning Centersprogram. Thefive-yeargrantsareawardedthroughfederalTitleIV,PartBfundingforout-of-schoolandsummerlearningprogramsdesignedtoprovideacademicenrichmentopportunitiesduringnon-schoolhours.Schoolsreceivingfundingofferavarietyof programsandactivities,includingacademicsupport,artsandmusic,careertechnicalprograms,familyengagementandmore.
“Thisfundingmeansstudentshavetheoptiontoextendengagementintheirschoolcommunitybeyondtheclassroomwhilestillreceivingsupportinastructuredenvironment,”saidSuperintendentofPublicInstructionDebbieCritchfield.“Whetherstudentsarecontinuingstudies,exploringtheirfuturesorplayingasport,thesegrantsgiveschoolsandcommunityorganizationsmorereachinthe workthattheydoforstudentsdaily.”
