Itwasarealtreattooccasionallysee thatCherylSandycurrentlylivinginTulsa, OklahomacametoseeherfamilyinHagerman.

Individualsunder50yearsoldtodaywould neverbeabletoimaginesharingonefamilydialphonewiththeentirefamily.Ours wasalightcreamcolorrotaryphonethat setuponourcounterbetweenthekitchen andfamilyroomwherecertainlyanyonein rangecouldheartheconversation.The realkickeristhatwesharedthephoneline withanywherefrom4peopleto12. We wouldlistentoacertainnumberofshort andlongringsthathadbeenpreviously assigned. Forinstance,2shortand1long ringwouldmeanwecouldanswerthe phone. However,anyoneonour“Party Line”couldpickupthereceiverandlisten in. Inevitably,each“PartyLine”would haveafewincessanttalkersmakingitdifficulttointerruptandmakeacall. Afriend inFairfield,BonnieMcGough,toldthe storyofayoungmanwhohadtowaitfor sometimeshourstomakeacall. Oneday, hepickedupthephoneandinterrupted the2ladiesdeepingossipingandinquired, “Doyousmellsomethingburning?” The ladypromptlyresponded,“Ohmyword,I forgotthebeansboilingonthestove.” Sheimmediatelyhungupthephoneand hewasabletomakehiscall.

Whenourspringpromcamearoundthe phonelinesneededtobeopen. Therewas chatteraroundwhowasinvitedbywhoto beyourdatetothedance. Thenallthe buzzwasaroundwhatthegirlswouldbe wearing. ThentherewasthePromcommitteethatdecidedthethemesong,which apparently,Ihadathemesongreadyto suggestformanyoccasions. Oneyear,our themesongwas“GetTogether”bythe Youngbloods. Myfriend,PegHendrickson Sagerecountedhowwewroteourname andourdate’snameonconstructionpapercutintoshapesmatchingthetheme. WeoutlinedthenameswithElmer’sglue andthensprinkledglitteroverthetop. Afterplacingthesespecialmementosstrategicallyaroundtheparameters,wefound glittereverywhereintheGymnasiumfor daystocome. Orchestratingdecorating withallthewrappedcrepepaperstrands alongwithballonsinmatchingcolorsand creatinganarchwayforourpicturestobe takenwithourdateswasquiteaphe-

Manyofuswouldendtheeveningwith ourfriendsattheOxbowCaféinBliss,as welaughedandmunchedonhamburgers andfriestoppedoffwithourfavoriteflavorofmilkshake.
