Folksthatknewhimsaidthathecouldeasilygetvolunteerstohelpwithanyproject intownandhemadeitfun!Pugmirewasa businessmanwhostartedtheCadyAuto Truckingcompanywithhisbusinesspartner,JimBarlogi.Notonlywasatrucking companyformed,butahardwarestoreand garage/gasstationaswellinthelocationof thecurrenthardwarestoreandwhatis nowtheChevronStation.Emerson,known toallas“Smokey”,wasinvolvedinchurch andcivicactivitiesinHagerman,Gooding CountyandStatewide.Hewasthemayor ofHagermanforseveralyearsandaGoodingCountyCommissioner.Hekneweverybodyintownandmanyaroundthestateas hegreetedfolkswithaninfectioussmile andastorytotell.Whatatragiclosswhen hewassuddenlykilleddrivingdownthe Blissgradeandstruck2horseslooserunningonthehighway.Itwassaidthat1000 peopleattendedhisfuneralwithsome peoplelisteningfromtheircarsparked nearthechurchwhichwasfilledtohonor thisremarkableman.

Inthe50’stheHagermanPioneerDays withtheparade,rodeoandcarnivalbecamequiteadrawforpeoplefromfarand near.July24thwaschosentocommemoratetheLDSsettlerscomingintotheSalt LakeareaonJuly24th,1847.Overtimeit becameacommunity-wideeventwithall thesmall-townvolunteersandfanfare comingtogether.

TheLDSladieswouldprovidehamburgers, hotdogs,withallthefixingsandevenone yearabuffalowasbarbequedinapitand offeredasfairfoodtopurchase.The womenbelongingtotheGrangewould bringallkindsofbakedgoodsandpiesto sell.Otherchurchgroupsandphilanthropic organizationswouldjointhearrayofhandmadeitemstosellforthecharityorclub whichwasrepresented.

Patsaystheylookedforwardtobeingin theparadeallyearlong.TheirDad,Bud Smith,whohelpedwiththerodeoand parademadeasmallcartwhichwaspulled bythefamilySheltonponynamedSkeeter. Heryoungerbrother,Lawrence,would oftendrivethehorsedrawncartinthe paradedeckedoutfromheadtotoein westernattire.Hisyounggradeschool friend,JuanitaAnderson,wouldsitbeside himlookingadorableinawesternstyle dressandhat.Theyusuallywonfirstplace inthehorsedrawportion.Thosetwokids weresuchahitthatoneyearthelocal paperannouncedtheyhadwonfirstprize, andtheyhadn’tevenbeeninthatyear’s parade!Lawrencesoldersisterswould takeadvantageofthehorsedrawncart eachyearbyofferingridestokidsfor10 centsintheparkusingtheearningstogo onthecarnivalrides.Thiswasquiteingenious!

CottonCandy,FerrisWheels,Cowboysand WildBroncRiders,localcommunitygroups sellingpiesandcakesinmakeshiftbooths allfillmythoughtswithhappymemories. PioneerDaysrepresentedthecommunity comingtogether,youngandold,smiling childrenwavingfrombicyclesdecorated withred,whiteandbluestreamers.As skilledmenandwomen,sittingstraight atopregalhorsesandhorse-drawnbuggiesproudlyrepresentedourhistoryofthe west,Ifeltapartofourcommunity.With patriotismonfulldisplay,watchingthe flagwavingfrommanyafloat,myyoung spiritwascaughtupwithjoyinourcountrytowncomingtogether.Iamgratefulto liveinIdahonow,assomanyruralcommunityparades,fairsandrodeosstillcarry on!Wehavehopeinourfuturegenerationshonoringthesetried-and-truetraditionsoffaith,familyandfreedom!
