Everyonelovesparades.The24thofJuly Paradeduringthe50’sand60’swasspectaculargoingdownthemainstreetthrough Hagerman.Startingasapicnicfundraiser forbuildingtheLDSChurchintown,EmersonPugmirewastheringleader!

Folksthatknewhimsaidthathecouldeasilygetvolunteerstohelpwithanyproject intownandhemadeitfun!Pugmirewasa businessmanwhostartedtheCadyAuto Truckingcompanywithhisbusinesspartner,JimBarlogi.Notonlywasatrucking companyformed,butahardwarestoreand garage/gasstationaswellinthelocationof thecurrenthardwarestoreandwhatis nowtheChevronStation.Emerson,known toallas“Smokey”,wasinvolvedinchurch andcivicactivitiesinHagerman,Gooding CountyandStatewide.Hewasthemayor ofHagermanforseveralyearsandaGoodingCountyCommissioner.Hekneweverybodyintownandmanyaroundthestateas hegreetedfolkswithaninfectioussmile andastorytotell.Whatatragiclosswhen hewassuddenlykilleddrivingdownthe Blissgradeandstruck2horseslooserunningonthehighway.Itwassaidthat1000 peopleattendedhisfuneralwithsome peoplelisteningfromtheircarsparked nearthechurchwhichwasfilledtohonor thisremarkableman.

Inthe50’stheHagermanPioneerDays withtheparade,rodeoandcarnivalbecamequiteadrawforpeoplefromfarand near.July24thwaschosentocommemoratetheLDSsettlerscomingintotheSalt LakeareaonJuly24th,1847.Overtimeit becameacommunity-wideeventwithall thesmall-townvolunteersandfanfare comingtogether.

TheLDSladieswouldprovidehamburgers, hotdogs,withallthefixingsandevenone yearabuffalowasbarbequedinapitand offeredasfairfoodtopurchase.The womenbelongingtotheGrangewould bringallkindsofbakedgoodsandpiesto sell.Otherchurchgroupsandphilanthropic organizationswouldjointhearrayofhandmadeitemstosellforthecharityorclub whichwasrepresented.

Heryoungerbrother,Lawrence,would oftendrivethehorsedrawncartinthe paradedeckedoutfromheadtotoein westernattire.Hisyounggradeschool friend,JuanitaAnderson,wouldsitbeside himlookingadorableinawesternstyle dressandhat.Theyusuallywonfirstplace inthehorsedrawportion.Thosetwokids weresuchahitthatoneyearthelocal paperannouncedtheyhadwonfirstprize, andtheyhadn’tevenbeeninthatyear’s parade!Lawrencesoldersisterswould takeadvantageofthehorsedrawncart eachyearbyofferingridestokidsfor10 centsintheparkusingtheearningstogo onthecarnivalrides.Thiswasquiteingenious!

CottonCandy,FerrisWheels,Cowboysand WildBroncRiders,localcommunitygroups sellingpiesandcakesinmakeshiftbooths allfillmythoughtswithhappymemories. PioneerDaysrepresentedthecommunity comingtogether,youngandold,smiling childrenwavingfrombicyclesdecorated withred,whiteandbluestreamers.As skilledmenandwomen,sittingstraight atopregalhorsesandhorse-drawnbuggiesproudlyrepresentedourhistoryofthe west,Ifeltapartofourcommunity.With patriotismonfulldisplay,watchingthe flagwavingfrommanyafloat,myyoung spiritwascaughtupwithjoyinourcountrytowncomingtogether.Iamgratefulto liveinIdahonow,assomanyruralcommunityparades,fairsandrodeosstillcarry on!Wehavehopeinourfuturegenerationshonoringthesetried-and-truetraditionsoffaith,familyandfreedom!
