Nestledin aprivateandrusticworldoverlookingthe SnakeRiver,thishomeandstudiowasdesignedandbuiltasanartssettingbyDeissler(Di)andAldrichBowler(Drich)inthe early1950’s.DrichwasborninShoshone, Idahoin1915andafterachievinganengineeringdegreefromtheUniversityof IdahotraveledtoNewYorkCitytobeginan actingcareer. HemetDiinNewYorkwho wasalsopursuingactinghavinggrownup inthePhiladelphiaarea. Afterabrieftime inthedramaticartsfollowedbyAldrich servinginthearmyafewyears,theyoung marriedcoupledroveanarmyjeepout westtobeginwhatwouldlaterbecomea majorcontributiontotheIdahoArtsScene. Mostfascinatingtomewasthecouples hardworkethicandcreativeenergytodevelopacenterforyoungartists,potters andactors. Drichinstalledawaterwheelin thestreamnearbyandthendevelopedhis ownhydroelectricpowerplanttogenerate enoughpowerforthepotterywheeland basicelectricneeds. Hisknowledgeofthe scienceswouldleadhimtodevelopmany iterationsofclaytakendirectlyfromthe SnakeRiverbelow. Hewasdeterminedto usethenaturalelementsoftheashand claysedimentslocallyinthedesigningof theclaypieces.

Onewonderswherehisartisticdriveand actingtalentswerecultivatedand shaped? Hismother,MarthaBowler’sfamilyhadsettledintheareafromNebraska. ShetaughtEnglishandelocutionat theGoodingCollege,housednearthestop lightatthesouth/eastendofthetownof Gooding. Shewasamasteratteaching speechandprojectionaswellascorrect grammar. Shealsodevelopedaspecial craftsmanartformofjewelrymadefrom localclayandglazeswhichwerequite popularintheearly1900’swhichMartha designedandthensoldbyspecialorderto collectorsaroundthecountry. Iimagine youngDrichwassparkedinhisearlyyears byobservingandlearningartisticexpressionfromhisownmother.

Onesummerourfamily hostedtwooftheseyoungfemaleactors, onefromChicagoandonefromLosAngeles. IwasmesmerizedtalkingwithPatty andKathyabouttheirexperiencesdoing stageandcommercialwork. These2young ladiesandotherperformerswouldrehearseforafewweeksandthengoonthe road,doingeverythingfromcreatingand settingupthebackdrops,todoingmakeup tokeepingtheircostumeslookinggoodto greetingtheguestsaftereachperformance.SomeevensangandplayedoldEnglishmusicalinstrumentswhichwerecarted fromtowntotown. Drichoftenplayedkey roleswithhisboomingvoiceandwinsome personalityremindingmeofRichardBurtonasthissmall-towngirlwastransported toanothertimeandplace.

Enjoyingpracticinghospitality wherevermylifetookme,Ialwayshadin thebackofmymindtohaveDimakean entiresetuppotterysothatmyentertainingwouldpresentanexpressionofmy rootsintheHagermanValley. MyMom, FlorenceMarySandy,akindredspiritinall thingswelcomingfriendsandstrangers alikeintoourhome,supportedthisidea. So,intheearly80’s,MomandIvisitedDi BowlerattheSnakeRiverPotteryand askedifshewouldmakeasetofpotteryI coulduseinhostingmeals. Atthattime, asIrecall,shehadrarelygottensucha request,buthappilytookonthisproject. Togetherweimaginedalookofsimple whiteglazepotterywithabluerimon eachoftheplates,bowls,andcupsintotal asetofeight. Muchtomydelightwhen visitingafewmonthslater,thesetof disheswascomplete. Itisapleasureto rememberthoselovinghandsandthe heartthatDiputintoeachpiece,asatableissetforspecialfriends.

MyMomandIattendedaspecialmemorialserviceforDiBowlerattheirhomeand studio,TheSnakeRiverPotteryin1986. Shewasbelovedandrememberedforher remarkablekindness,diligentworkethic, creativeabilitiesandenthusiasticinterest inthemanypeople,youngandoldalike. Recentlydiscoveringherwritingskillsas shewrotearegularcolumnintheIdaho Statesmancalled“TheArtsintheMagic Valley”,Ihavebeenfascinatedbyherabilitytopaintpicturesofbehind-the-scenes lookoftravelingwiththeAntiqueFestival Theaterandotherlifestories.Herson, PeterBowler,hascompiledherwritings intoabookhousedattheHagermanHistoricalSociety. Readingsomeofthese shortstorieshasgivenmeanewandfresh glimpseoftheBowlersandtheircontributiontotheArtsthroughoutIdaho. The impactoftheirlivesgoesoninthelives theyeducatedandentertainedintheir timehereamongus. ThankyouDrichand DiBowleryourpresenceonthisearthin theHagermanValleymadeourlivesmuch richer. TheSnakeRiverPotterycontinued forseveralmoreyearswithDrichandhis nephewNedSwisherandfriendscarrying onthemakingofthisspecialprimitive stylepotteryheatedinalowfiretemperatureandaccentedwiththeirownadapted mixofdrippedglazes. Inspiredbythe magicaltimesoftheAntiqueFestival Theaterduringthe60’sand70’s,thewritingsofDiBowlerwillbefeaturedinthe nextMagicValleyNewsSeptemberedition. Staytuned!
