Everyonelovesparades.The24thofJuly Paradeduringthe50’sand60’swas spectaculargoingdownthemainstreet throughHagerman.Startingasapicnic fundraiserforbuildingtheLDSChurchin town,EmersonPugmirewasthe ringleader!
Folksthatknewhimsaidthathecould easilygetvolunteerstohelpwithany projectintownandhemadeitfun! Pugmirewasabusinessmanwhostarted theCadyAutoTruckingcompanywithhis businesspartner,JimBarlogi.Notonlywas atruckingcompanyformed,buta hardwarestoreandgarage/gasstationas wellinthelocationofthecurrenthardware storeandwhatisnowtheChevronStation. Emerson,knowntoallas“Smokey”,was involvedinchurchandcivicactivitiesin Hagerman,GoodingCountyandStatewide. HewasthemayorofHagermanforseveral yearsandaGoodingCountyCommissioner. Hekneweverybodyintownandmany aroundthestateashegreetedfolkswith aninfectioussmileandastorytotell.What atragiclosswhenhewassuddenlykilled drivingdowntheBlissgradeandstruck2 horseslooserunningonthehighway.It wassaidthat1000peopleattendedhis funeralwithsomepeoplelisteningfrom theircarsparkednearthechurchwhich wasfilledtohonorthisremarkableman.
Inthe50’stheHagermanPioneerDays withtheparade,rodeoandcarnival becamequiteadrawforpeoplefromfar andnear.July24thwaschosento commemoratetheLDSsettlerscominginto theSaltLakeareaonJuly24th,1847.Over timeitbecameacommunity-wideevent withallthesmall-townvolunteersand fanfarecomingtogether.
TheLDSladieswouldprovidehamburgers, hotdogs,withallthefixingsandevenone yearabuffalowasbarbequedinapitand offeredasfairfoodtopurchase.The womenbelongingtotheGrangewould bringallkindsofbakedgoodsandpiesto sell.Otherchurchgroupsandphilanthropic organizationswouldjointhearrayof

PatandVernitaSmithrodehorseseach yearintheparadeandwerealldolledup inWesternAttirefromtheageof10on. Patsaystheylookedforwardtobeingin theparadeallyearlong.TheirDad,Bud Smith,whohelpedwiththerodeoand parademadeasmallcartwhichwaspulled bythefamilySheltonponynamedSkeeter. Heryoungerbrother,Lawrence,would oftendrivethehorsedrawncartinthe paradedeckedoutfromheadtotoein westernattire.Hisyounggradeschool friend,JuanitaAnderson,wouldsitbeside himlookingadorableinawesternstyle dressandhat.Theyusuallywonfirstplace inthehorsedrawportion.Thosetwokids weresuchahitthatoneyearthelocal paperannouncedtheyhadwonfirstprize, andtheyhadn’tevenbeeninthatyear’s parade!Lawrencesoldersisterswould takeadvantageofthehorsedrawncart eachyearbyofferingridestokidsfor10 centsintheparkusingtheearningstogo onthecarnivalrides.Thiswasquite ingenious!

PioneerDaysrepresentedthecommunity comingtogether,youngandold,smiling childrenwavingfrombicyclesdecorated withred,whiteandbluestreamers.As skilledmenandwomen,sittingstraight atopregalhorsesandhorse-drawn buggiesproudlyrepresentedourhistoryof thewest,Ifeltapartofourcommunity.
