Gazing out a picture window from the dining room area, I longed to be part of the outside winter dance. I could imagine spinning in cir-

Running into the kitchen I noticed Mother had already made her special French toast for everyone. Homemade butter and sweet maple syrup sat on the dining room table. My throat had been sore for the last couple of days and it seemed like a bowl of cream of wheat sounded so good. Before I could make a request mom was already carrying out creamy cooked cereal made with warm milk ready to pour on top. How could she read my mind? My older brother finished up breakfast in a flash. He ran to get on his warm coat with a zip-up hood and fuzzy lining. My sister took her time eating breakfast and helped clear the

Growing up in Hagerman Sponsored by IDAHO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION - Pgs 3, 6, 8, 22 table. She carefully put on her coat, mittens and scarf, then gave me the ‘I’m sorry’ look. Did she know something I didn’t know? My excitement grew assuming I would be joining my siblings outside to play on the new layer of snow. Then I heard the words from mom sounding almost in slow motion, “You'll need to stay inside so your sore throat won’t get any worse.” I think I read her lips exactly, but was it true? A perfect snow day turned into an inside day, on a Saturday?! I felt that I would faint away and remember this my whole life! At my young age there was nothing much I could do except go stand by the picture window and watch. My older brother had already been rolling the first deck of the snowman. He looked like he was having so much fun! He was going rather fast like a locomotive! I noticed the lawn changed from a pure white winter wonderland to many wide smashed and mashed paths with tracks from his big boots. Pieces of green and gold grass now peeked out, laying in all directions. My sister soon joined him in working on the next layer. She pressed together a small snowball and came to the window to show me. I felt like I was watching a movie play out before my bright eyes. She made it round and hard and then the process began. Placing the snowball between the paths, Cheryl bent down and gave it a nice roll, then another and another. Although not as fast as my brother, it soon took shape, round yet oval. I wondered who was going to roll the snowman’s head. I thought it should have been me, being the third child and all, however, I wasn’t out there to make it happen. I could just imagine how beautiful and alive I could make it look. If I couldn’t dance out there, at least the snowman could. I ran quickly to the refrigerator as there was something I could do to help. Opening the vegetable drawer I peered in on my tiptoes hoping I could find a carrot. Sure enough there was a small orange stub left. I reached in and helped myself. Running to the window I tried to get someone’s attention, waving the carrot stub from one side to the other. I was so close to the window that the space where I breathed began fogging up. Using my arm below the elbow to wipe it off, I noticed my older sister standing outside waving at me. This was definitely a gold star moment!

How to Deal with Medicare’s Rising Costs Not Paying Attention Can Cost You. If you have Medicare, you can expect a big raise in 2024, a whopping 2% increase in your social security benefits! Your part B costs have been raised 5%. So how to deal with the rising costs of Medicare? Staying current and shopping every year is imperative. With Medicare Advantage Plans and standalone drug plans expect changesfrom year to year. Doctors can come and go from networks and drugs come and go from formularies. Every company is different. If you have a Supplemental plan, the cost will also change every year. Did you know that different companies charge different rates for the same exact supplemental plan? Did you know most people on an F plan are paying too much? If you did not check your coverage options during open enrollment October 15th -December 7th, you have one more opportunity on January 1st -March 31st. Did you know Medicare premiums are tax deductible? Most people can itemize the deductions on their federal tax return to receive the benefit. If you itemize your deductions, you can only claim medical expenses that exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. But, if you are self-employed, the rules are different. You may be able to deduct up to 100% of qualifying Medicare premiums even if you do not itemize. You can also deduct any coinsurance costs and deductibles you paid for Medicare-covered services. If you paid for services that Medicare did not cover like dental care and eye care, those expenses are also tax deductible if they are medically necessary. If you take home less than $21,870 as income and $16,600 in assets individually or $29,580 and $33,240 as a married couple during 2023, you may qualify for extra help. Money, stocks, and bonds count toward the income and assets yet your home, one car, your burial plots and up to $1500 for burial expenses, furniture and personal items do not count. The extra help assistance will help pay for your part B monthly premium and/or your drug costs. There are different tiers of assistance available. You can read about the extra help at Medicare.gov and apply online at SSA.Gov. You can also go in person to the health and welfare office located at601 Pole line road in Twin Falls. It’s worth applying if you are under the limit or borderline. Page 9

Suddenly, after noticing all the excitement outside, dad came into the farmhouse for a few brief moments. Dad looked down at me gazing out the double pane window by the dining room table. I heard him say that he would go get his Polaroid camera to take a photograph of all of us near the snowman. My mom, Florence Mary, agreed! That was the moment I was waiting for! Quick as you could say “Jack Frost”, mom had my coat, scarf and boots in her hands. She helped me slip them on and do up the buttons. I was so happy to be able to join my siblings outside for a special snow photo! The snowman looked even more alive in person! His body wasn’t completely round. The cracks between layers had been filled in and patted firmly. The base and second layers were about the same size. In fact, the middle might have been a bit larger than the bottom. The best part of all, our reddish brown and white dog, Swivel, decided to get in the picture with us. He was so happy to have everyone outside with him. He would soon be in the house getting warm by the fireplace with the rest of the family, while we enjoyed hot chocolate. My throat got a lot better in about the next forty eight hours. Who knows, if I hadn't been sick and had to stay inside that Saturday when we got four inches of snow, this moment may not have been such a valuable memory. As it is, that winter day in Hagerman, when we made the Snowman, is etched in my mind! Later that January, I lay outside on our cold white lawn with a big wide smile. Tiny pieces of falling snowflakes did a disappearing act on my eyelashes and rosy red cheeks. Looking up, I imagined small white dove feathers floating down from heaven.

This time Mom was on the inside of the house peeking out through the double pane dining room window. Our eyes met as I saw her lovingly wave and smile. I really thought the snow

IDAHO HERITAGE TRUST ANNOUNCES RECIPIENTS OF H AWARDS $821,000 TO RESTORE THE BOISE – The Idaho Heritage Trust (IHT) has selected nine historic theatres to receive $821,000 in funding through our Historic Theatre Revitalization Subgrant Program in order to facilitate the preservation of these vital structures in Idaho’s rural communities (defined as having a population less than 50,000 people). This program is supported by the Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant Program funded by the Historic Preservation Fund as administered by the National Park Service (NPS), Department of Interior and the Idaho Heritage Trust Fund. The recipients will match ten (10) % or more of the award amount to complete their restoration projects.

John Hiller, Billy Galloska, Dorothy Drake, Susan Case, Kurtis Workman, Amy Cole 148 E Idaho Street (208) 580-4202 GlennsFerryTheatre.org

The theater was built in 1914 and created by the same architectural firm that designed the Idaho state capital building and the Egyptian theater in Boise. In the past, the upper parapet was removed. The interior of the building is well on its restoration path, the exterior deterioration has not been addressed because of the size and scope of the project. This grant will allow the repair to damage where the parapet was taken down and using 1914 architectural drawings in our possession, restore the building to its original design. Our goal has been to safeguard and restore this jewel as the cultural center for the arts in our region and for future generations. It is a proud and exciting moment!

In 1911, the building was originally an opera house and ran until 2015. Then “Everything went digital and we were set up for 35 millimeter film.” The grant is to do repairs to the building, such as a new roof and replacement bricks. If possible, the marquee will be replaced. The building was a community meeting place, and when repaired, will bring the community closer together again. The vision includes adding live performances, including school functions and plays.

BURLEY THEATER, BURLEY

Dr. Russ Tremayne and Jerry Myers 135 W Main St (208) 678-5631 BurleyTheatre.org We are deeply grateful for this generous grant from the Idaho Heritage Trust and we are so excited to start the restoration of the theater. We are thrilled that it will continue to be a landmark of Main Street in downtown Burley, spur further revitalization of the area, and be preserved for future generations to enjoy. Two community partners also helped make this project possible. We are also extremely grateful to the Harris family for keeping the building as a theater for over 100 years and to the Goode Motor Education Foundation for making it possible for us to obtain the building and start this massive project.

610 Fremont St (208) 436-2787 HistoricWilsonTheatre.com This year the Wilson Theatre was able to raise $100,000. This money came from private individuals, PMT and the Robert Orr Foundation. This money will be spent on a new sound system that will allow a better overall experience for our patrons, and also help those who are hearing impaired. The new system has been engineered to cover every spot in the auditorium with better sound. Those with hearing aids will connect into our sound system via smart phones and an app. We are very excited to be able to provide this technology to our guests. The Wilson Theatre is truly one of Idaho's brightest gems!

Growing up in Hagerman Valley Sponsor IDAHO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION - Pages 3, 6, 8, 22 angel was the best I’d ever made! Our Snowman still stood straight and tall, carrot stub for a nose, a flat barrel hat on his head, rocks for eyes and buttons with an old broom at his side. Little did I know then that this moment for me would stand still in time. Snowmen will always be fun winter creations that are passed down from one generation to the next, giving children, families and friends a chance to laugh, play and participate together in many positive, joyous moments. I remember such a time in Hagerman on that wonderful wintery Saturday, back in 1960! It was a photo moment!

The Magic Valley News thanks the Idaho Community Foundation for their December grant. This grant will Sponsor the story “Growing Up in Hagerman Valley” during 2024.
