Lone Pine Estate

AN ESCAPE THAT FEELS WORLDS AWAY

107 LLOYD ROAD, RIVERHEAD, AUCKLAND 0793

Lone Pine Estate, nestled in rural Riverhead just 30 minutes from Auckland’s CBD, charms couples with its effortlessly elegant European-inspired setting.

Launched in 2020 and crafted by architect Nikolay Pronin, this luxury venue transports guests into a Tuscan dream without leaving New Zealand. From the moment visitors arrive, they find themselves surrounded by immaculate gardens, Italian pines, olive groves, vineyards and stirring water features. A terrace fountain and white pergolas set a romantic tone, while sculpted courtyards nod to old-world grandeur.

Ceremonies in the 20 metre Rotunda feel truly cinematic. Adorned with Florentine mosaics and dramatic columns, the space plays with light and shadow to memorable effect. Guests will still be talking about it long after the reception ends.

THIS LUXURY VENUE TRANSPORTS GUESTS INTO A TUSCAN DREAM WITHOUT LEAVING NEW ZEALAND.

The bridal party can then move to the open-air amphitheatre or gather indoors in the Marble Hall. Lined with Italian marbles, featuring Murano crystal chandeliers, French doors and Tikhomirov artwork, the Hall is a graceful yet convivial spot for a reception or after-party.

Lone Pine Estate hosts just fifteen events each year, giving each wedding bespoke focus and exclusivity. Couples are welcome to bring their own caterers and beverages. Also the venue provides essentials like tables, cutlery, audio systems, décor and even a retro carriage for impactful arrivals, making planning more flexible and less stressful.

The Estate also offers a serene bridal room where the bride and her party can relax, prepare and refresh throughout the day. Tucked away from the main event spaces, this private sanctuary is thoughtfully designed with comfort in mind, perfect for quiet moments before the ceremony or a quick breather in between photos.

Service is frequently praised by couples, not just for the stunning setting, but for how warm and helpful the team is. Some couples saying it felt like stepping into Bridgerton, with hosts who go out of their way to ensure comfort and ease, and regular mention of how magical and stress-free the day felt.

Lone Pine Estate is ideal for couples seeking luxury without stuffiness. It offers architectural refinement, photogenic grounds and a boutique approach to weddings. For dreamy vows under vines, European charm and a team that genuinely cares, it delivers with heart and style with down-to-earth elegance amid grand design.

Behind the vows

Celebrants reveal what really matters

While for a wedding celebrant, it may be their hundredth ceremony, for most couples, it’s their first. Five celebrants share their best advice on making the most of them on your big day.

Siobháin Hooper (thecelebrant.co.nz) became a celebrant after her own wedding. “I want couples and guests to feel at ease on the day and know that they are in safe hands,” she says. “It’s a collective effort to create something really special.”

Siobháin says that letting your celebrant know of key family or guest dynamics is helpful, as is having a professional audio setup if possible. But most important is that couples are really open with their celebrant.

“You’ll feel comfortable, like you have a friend up there with you.”

Nate Dunn (www.nate.nz) enjoyed marrying his friends so much that he never stopped officiating. He says that great celebrants are truly passionate about the industry and care for their couple; at the core of a great celebrant-couple relationship is collaboration.

“Watch other ceremonies the celebrant has done, and make sure the style and tone are what you're after,” he advises. “Don't be afraid to change or improve bits of the ceremony that you think can be improved.”

Debbie Hawker (chchcelebrant.co.nz) says a great celebrant is like a secret ingredient. She says the more quirky, tiny details are shared, the more personal the ceremony becomes. “Bring it (warts and all) to the table!

“The best ceremonies come from couples who trust their celebrant enough to let them weave in those unexpected, beautiful threads that make the story uniquely theirs.”

Sean Joyce (seanfjoycecelebrant.com) lists personality, training, connection, and the focused pursuit of glowing reviews (of which he has many) as what make a great celebrant. It’s also up to the celebrant to ask the right questions at the right time.

“As a couple's confidence in their celebrant grows, their view of what's possible expands, and an iterative process takes over. So, a planned short, nervous wedding becomes a lovely, big, glowing event. It's the celebrant's job to find out what the couple would really, really love.”

Sarah Porter (sarahporter.co.nz) says that openness and honesty lead to great weddings, a connection that naturally emerges when she meets couples over coffee – or wine.

She adds that it’s also great to get onto things early. “The time leading up to the wedding can get really busy, so the wedding script is something that can get ticked off in advance.

“I see it as a privilege and pleasure to marry people. My wish is that couples would want to do their ceremony all over again, but not change anything.”

The Boat House

RUSTIC CHARM WITH A WATERFRONT VIEW

68 QUEEN STREET, RIVERHEAD 0820

There’s something undeniably magical about a venue where nature meets celebration. The Boat House at The Riverhead captures that spirit beautifully, offering couples a riverside setting that’s effortlessly picturesque, with all the comforts and style of a well-loved, well-run establishment.

What makes this venue special is how it balances rustic charm with thoughtful design. The outdoor lawn and a permanent marquee offer a relaxed garden party vibe, yet sliding open doors reveal a reception area with vaulted ceilings, soft ambient lighting and hanging flower arrangements that bring a subtle “wow” factor. The flow from indoor to outdoor feels seamless, allowing guests to drift from lawn to deck to dining space with ease.

Inside, the reception room accommodates up to around 150 guests in comfort, decorate as you wish or lean into the room’s naturally elegant layout and décor. As night falls, the celebration moves into the Blue Room. With a generous bar, decks and room to dance, it offers a great spot for first dances, final speeches and late-night laughter.

Couples consistently praise the venue’s excellent food, warm service and attention to detail from the events team. From the first enquiry to the last dance, The Boat House staff—including the dedicated Events Manager—guide each wedding with care, helping make everything truly stress-free. Testimonials speak for themselves: one couple called it “the best investment we made,” another highlighted the food, layout and the guests’ rave reviews as highlights of their experience.

Ease of access is another star feature here. While most arrive by road, the option to arrive by ferry or private vessel at their own dock adds a memorable touch to the day. Ample parking for guests means convenience is never compromised.

And if you’re overwhelmed by planning details, don’t worry. The Boat House offers a trusted network of local vendors, including celebrants, photographers, florists and musicians, all of whom have proven themselves at The Riverhead time and time again.

For couples seeking a wedding venue that feels special without pretentiousness, The Boat House at The Riverhead offers that perfect balance: beautiful riverside surroundings, thoughtful service, outstanding food, and plenty of charm. It’s not just a venue, it’s a place where your story becomes part of a rich, welcoming tradition.

The modern stag and hen do

Stag and hen dos are no longer wild, lawless nights out divided neatly down gender lines. In 2025, couples are rethinking what these events mean. Are they fun or outdated? The truth lies somewhere in the middle.

The modern stag and hen do doesn’t reduce people to caricatures, like the groom as a rowdy lad who needs one last night of freedom, and the bride as a princess swaddled in pink sashes. People want their bachelor parties to reflect who they actually are.

Out is ticking boxes like the stripper, novelty costume, and crude dares. When the night’s focus is on these cliches, the real point of celebrating friendships and the upcoming commitment is lost. Some of the best stag and hen party today focus less on acting out and more on bonding in: wellness retreats, creative workshops, hikes, wine tours, and barbecues.

Modern do planning considers many once-unasked questions. Is this punching down or playful? Is this inclusive or does it alienate? Is this really what we want to do? Swapping pranks for nice surprises and competitive games for collaborative ones means nobody is sidelined from having fun.

It’s also wise to question commercialism. While there’s nothing wrong with splashing out, there’s no need to spend big to meet traditions that don’t hold personal meaning. Big or small, a thoughtful, tailored event feels far more authentic.

Mixed gender "stens" (joint stag and hen dos) are also popular. They break down the assumption that friendships must be split along gender lines, allowing couples to celebrate together with the people who matter most. It feels truer to the relationships at the heart of a marriage.

Perhaps it’s a generational shift. They are more comfortable discarding stereotypes, more likely to mix friendship groups, and more focused on creating memories rather than sticking to tradition.

We don’t need to scrap the stag and hen do. Just the baggage that no longer fits. It doesn’t have to be a regressive night with an emotional hangover. Done right, it can be one of the most affirming and fun parts of the wedding journey.

Celebrating with personality

HOW GEN Z IS MAKING WEDDINGS THEIR OWN

As the next generation of brides and grooms begin to say “I do”, there is no denying that Gen Z is rewriting the rulebook on weddings.

For this generation, it appears their big day isn’t about tradition or perfectly polished appearances, it’s about personality, authenticity, and a touch of whimsy. These couples are welcoming celebrations that feel unique to them, filled with playful details, bold choices, and a whole lot of heart.

If you are planning a wedding or just dreaming of what could be, here are some of the Gen Z trends that are going viral and stealing hearts.

High-low food combinations

Gone are the days when a wedding menu had to be stiff and formal. Gen Z couples are bringing a fresh approach to catering, blending luxury with nostalgia. Think champagne and sliders, or a classic cocktail hour followed by late-night woodfire pizza deliveries. This playful ‘high-low’ mix is about creating a food experience that feels both elevated and approachable. It’s indulgent, it’s fun, and it keeps everyone smiling from the first toast to the last dance.

Authentic content creators

While traditional photographers and videographers still play an important role, Gen Z couples are also hiring content creators to capture their wedding day. These aren’t just professionals with expensive cameras; these are storytellers who specialise in social-media-ready content. From candid Tik-Tok style clips to Instagram reels edited in real time, these creators capture the small, unfiltered moments that make a wedding day truly special. The subtle glances and behind-the-scenes chaos are all preserved in a way that feels real and intimate, in a way that is not just about documenting the wedding, but about reliving the day the way it felt.

Multiple looks

Why settle for one dress when you can have three? Gen Z brides are embracing the idea that a wedding is not just a single outfit moment but an entire fashion story. Ceremony gowns often lean towards the timeless and romantic, while reception looks bring in playful, modern flair. Think short dresses for dancing, or chic separates. It’s not just about the fashion, either; it’s about expressing different sides of the bride's personality, from elegant and graceful to bold and fun.

Photo-ready moments

Gen Z, more than any generation, understands the power of a photo-op. Beyond the professional photos, they are creating spaces for their guests to capture memories, too. Some weddings now feature beautifully curated backdrops, stylish retro photo booths, and interactive installations designed for Instagram-worthy moments. It’s a way of saying this day isn’t just about watching, it’s about participating, celebrating, and documenting together.

Unique venues

Forget ballrooms and halls, Gen Z is on the hunt for venues that feel personal and unexpected. Think rooftop gardens, art galleries, rustic barns, industrial warehouses, or even backyards transformed into the perfect intimate space to say “I do.” The focus is on creating an atmosphere that reflects the couple’s story rather than ticking off tradition. Unique venues create the opportunity for creativity, intimacy, and that “wow” factor guests won't forget. It’s less about what is conventional and more about what feels right for the couple to start their new life together.

The rise of bridal accessories

Dresses aren’t the only thing getting attention; accessories are taking centre stage too. Gen Z brides are experimenting with fashion-forward touches like neck scarves, bows, bubble hems, statement gloves, and even coloured shoes. These details add personality and make each look feel dynamic and unique to them. Accessories also allow brides to switch up their look without a full outfit change, as adding a dramatic veil or cape can completely transform a look.

Personality-driven celebrations

Perhaps the biggest change we are seeing is weddings that feel like an extension of the couple themselves. From custom cocktails named after inside jokes, childhood photos on tables, or quizzes about the couple, the day is less about impressing guests and more about sharing love in a way that feels real. It’s weddings that look less like Pinterest boards and more like personalities coming to life

Laid-back love stories

Gen Z weddings are romantic without being rigid. Formalities are giving way to laid-back vibes: cocktail-style receptions where guests mingle instead of sitting through assigned seating, and evenings that feel more like a garden party than a grand production. There’s an ease to it all, a focus on joy and togetherness rather than ticking off traditions. But, this doesn’t mean weddings feel casual; they still carry beauty and intention, but also a sense of relaxation that makes the celebration feel warm and welcoming.

A celebration that feels like you

At the heart of it all, Gen Z weddings are shaping up to be about authenticity. They are about creating a day that isn’t perfect in the traditional sense but feels perfectly you. It’s oysters and fries and dancing in your second or third dress until dawn. It’s snapping photos with your friends squeezed in a photo booth, tears of joy during speeches at a rooftop reception, and a couple who is unafraid to celebrate their love on their own terms.

This new wave of weddings from Gen Z is proof that romance doesn’t come from tradition; it comes from being authentically yourself on your day.

New Zealand’s Wedding Industry Winners

The 8th annual Wedding Industry Awards New Zealand took place in June, honouring outstanding achievements across twenty diverse categories.

The event brought together the country’s leading wedding professionals, from stylists and celebrants to caterers and venue operators, highlighting the creativity, innovation, and dedication that underpin New Zealand’s vibrant wedding industry.

The evening’s top honour, the Supreme Award, went to The Event Girl, recognised for setting a benchmark in excellence and service that resonated across the judging panel. In fashion, Olivia-Rose Bridal Boutique took home the award for Outstanding Wedding Gowns, a nod to their craftsmanship and ability to create dream dresses for brides across the country.

Photography and videography—two of the most competitive fields in the industry—saw Fluro Grey named for Outstanding Photography, while V Visual and Wilderness Films were recognised for their exceptional storytelling through moving images. In the beauty sector, makeup artist Loren Russell received honours for her artistry, and Kat’s Floral Design was celebrated for breathtaking floral creations.

CONTINUES OVER PAGE

Ceremony leaders also featured prominently, with Koryn Willan, Mel Foster, and Hogan Gill all awarded in the Outstanding Wedding Celebrant/Officiant and MC category, recognising their ability to bring warmth and personality to a couple’s most important day.

For couples searching for the perfect backdrop, several venues were highlighted, including Lochend Woolshed, Markovina Vineyard Estate, The Duke of Marlborough, Deer Valley Venue, and Black Walnut Venue. Each was recognised for providing unforgettable settings and service.

Food and drink, essential to any celebration, were also in the spotlight. Stiletto Studio Cakes was awarded for Outstanding Wedding Cakes, while Precinct Food secured honours in catering. Meanwhile, the growing popularity of mobile bars and catering was reflected with recognition for Lemonpiecaravan, Tipsy Tow Bar, and Burton's on Pollen Lunch Bar

Now in its eighth year, the Wedding Industry Awards continue to shine a light on the professionals who bring couples’ visions to life. From intimate details to large-scale celebrations, this year’s winners illustrate why New Zealand remains a destination of choice for unforgettable weddings.

What’s in a name?

So, the wedding is over, the confetti has settled, and now there’s a new question on your mind: should you change your name? In New Zealand, there’s no legal requirement to do so. It’s completely your choice, which is freeing but also a little confusing.

Do I have to change my name?

Nope, not at all. New Zealand law leaves it up to you. Some people keep their maiden name, especially if they’ve built a career or personal identity around it. Others take their partner’s surname as a symbol of unity. Then there are creative options like hyphenating both names (Smith-Jones), joining them into one double-barrelled surname (SmithJones), or even starting fresh with something entirely new. The right choice is simply the one that feels most like you.

If you do decide to change your name, the process is pretty straightforward. Most organisations will accept your marriage certificate as proof. Banks, IRD, NZTA (for your driver’s license), and even utility companies usually just need to see it. A good tip is to order certified copies of your marriage certificate, so you’re not sending off your only original.

Updating your passport is another step. If you were married in New Zealand, simply provide your marriage certificate. Married overseas? You’ll need to fill out a form along with your certificate. Each bank and provider has slightly different rules, so it’s worth giving them a call before you head in.

What if I don’t change my name?

That’s completely fine too. Plenty of people keep their maiden name for professional or personal reasons. Others like to use both, keeping one for work and the other for family life. There’s no wrong way to go about it.

A few extra things to know

• Updating the electoral roll is easy with your RealMe login.

• Changing your driver’s license comes with a small fee.

• If you’re planning to buy a new home, it can be simpler to update your name on the house title at that stage.

At the end of the day, it’s your name and your choice. Talk it through with your partner, think about what feels comfortable, and remember whatever you decide should reflect you. After all, marriage is about celebrating a new chapter, and your name is just one part of that story.

The lagoon of love

What better place to be married than in paradise? That question rang true for Rachel and Michael, who were drawn to the island serenity of Rarotonga.

On the shores of Aroa Beach, the South Pacific set the stage for a lush, tropical wedding overflowing with relaxed romance. The blue waters of the Lagoon of Love shimmered at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Lagoonarium, where 28 guests gathered to witness the marriage. As a destination wedding, each guest had a special moment with the newlyweds.

“Everyone is relaxed, and there is a calmer vibe,” Rachel says. “Family and friends come over and spend quality time in the build-up to the day. Having a wedding locally is where you are lucky to see your guests for a moment on the one day.

Guests simply took one direct flight to Rarotonga from Australia. “It made sense to keep it easy and accessible,” Rachel says. “An island destination wedding on Rarotonga for us was the whole experience that we would not have had with our guests had we had our wedding locally.”

After the vows were exchanged, the festivity rolled into a feast of island flavours: a naked coconut cake and barbecue banquet kept the guests in high spirits, all included in The Rarotongan’s Seventh Heaven All-Inclusive Wedding Package.

A destination wedding also means a celebration that doesn’t start and end in a single day. Across their stay, guests enjoyed swims in turquoise waters, evenings at the night markets, and day trips to Aitutaki. The couple’s honeymoon at the adults-only sister resort, Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort, let them soak in dazzling sunsets and the remote beauty of One Foot Island.

“We went to numerous cafes, bars, restaurants in Rarotonga and at The Rarotongan Resort. We loved and enjoyed the people, went to culture nights, boat tours, swimming with turtles.”

The experiences on offer are far-reaching. One guest enjoyed a degustation dinner tour. Several went to local churches and mass. Some let loose on the party bus, some visited waterfalls, some enjoyed tiedyeing. Rachel remarks that some guests have already booked to go back next year, or the year after.

“Michael and I want to thank you and everyone who helped make our wedding day amazing and so memorable,” Rachel says. “We will be back and the Sanctuary has a special place in our hearts.”
