Engineering success from scratch Businesses that flourish in a strategic, sustainable way have a distinct common denominator - their ability to remain devoted to their core vision in every facet of the operation.

This fact is certainly well evidenced by the performance of industrial equipment supplier Independent Engineering Supplies, based in Timaru. It recognises and consistently honours its outstanding customer service ethos in all it does, and has done since inception in 2011. It is the business’ focus on building and maintaining local relationships and taking great care with respecting those relationships, that gives it a unique point of difference. This is something co-founder Clayton Holland is particularly proud of. Clayton lived and breathed engineering sales for most of his working life before founding the company at a time he felt was right to do something for himself, along with business partner Alan Roker. “We are very big on relationships and this very much owes to our size.” Not hindered by the bureaucratic constraints inherent in many corporate giants, Clayton says the merits of being a smaller operation are also realised in the business’ agility, responsiveness, and flexibility. “We are able to make decisions on the spot and our main goal is to keep our clients happy.

I believe that in New Zealand, independents like us are able to do a far better job at servicing customers.” Initially a business of just three hard working staff, the company has grown to a dedicated team of eight with a portfolio that has diversified significantly. “Initially we were involved primarily with the fishing fleets in Timaru. These were our main historic relationships and provided us with a base from which we grew the business. “It is great to be part of the solid, healthy economy in Timaru. There has been a lot of

“What is most important to us is that our clients get the correct products on time, and if our staff can have a good life and a few laughs along the way, then that is a bonus, and that’s how we strive to work.” From bearings, V Belts and nuts and bolts, through to chemicals, lubrication and load binders, Independent Engineering Supplies prides itself on providing top quality products and offering tried and trusted brand names such as Teng Tools, Lincoln Welding, Milwaukee Power Tools and Elf Lubricants, to name a few.
