The packaging specialists Talk to Nadia Marinelli, managing director of Shardlows, the packaging specialists, about the business she leads and her face lights up with pride. That’s not surprising because Shardlows has been in operation since 1965, so are celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2015. Such successful longevity is a remarkable achievement indeed. “My stepfather, Mike Shardlow, started the business from his garage in Oliviers Rd,” explains Nadia. “Initially he sold 3M and other office and stationery products, but then his customers began asking for different products and so he branched out into other items. He became so busy that he employed his first staff member who delivered orders on a push bike.” Shardlows moved to its current premises in Saxon Street, Phillipstown in the 1970s and Mike Shardlow continued to operate it until his death in 2013. Nadia began to work with her stepfather some 20 years ago and stepped up seamlessly into the managing director’s role when that became necessary. Taking a prominent place on the office wall are photos of founder Mike Shardlow, because Shardlows is very much a family firm. Shardlows now stocks one of the widest ranges of packaging products and options in the South Island. They have paper bags, carry bags and polythene bags, protective wrapping, strapping and tubing, washroom and cafeteria supplies, markers, knives, tapes and adhesives, even
asbestos related products, cleaning products and building supplies. If they don’t stock a product they will source it going to great lengths to obtain specific products or alternatives for their customers. Indeed Shardlows’ success can be attributed to its excellent customer service along with extensive product knowledge.
