Case Studies Re-roofing using Skellerup Hatteras asphalt shingles A Mellons Bay residence with an existing decramastic tile (metal tile with a mineral chip), roof had lost a considerable amount of its chips, leading to corrosion and popping nails. This resulted in an unsightly but worse still, leaking roof. The roof was skillion style with no insulation installed in its tiny roof cavity, resulting in insufficient ventilation of internal moisture. The home owners needed to reroof with a durable system that would also incorporate insulation and ventilation. It was also important to them that the very steep roof had a defining look as it was a major feature of their home. The BRANZ appraised Skellerup “Hatteras” tile (pictured right), was selected for its traditional slate-like
appearance which complemented the building’s architecture. Viking Roofspec recommended that its Approved Applicator install the plywood substrate onto the existing purlins to promote airflow throughout the roof; thus maximizing ventilation. The home owners were thrilled with the result; commenting that out of all the renovations they had completed on their home, the roof was the one that had provided the most aesthetic impact. With 40 years of warranted protection from a shingle installed only by an approved applicator and designed for maximum ventilation and extreme weather conditions, the owners now have a warm, dry home and peace of mind all year around.

Skellerup Warm Roofs During the design stage of a large Tauranga Home the owner was focused on reducing the energy consumption within the home; future-proofing it to ensure ongoing energy savings and achieving a complete waterproofing solution. As a result, a ‘warm roof’ was specified. A warm roof takes the dew-point (condensation) to the outside of the building envelope by insulating a building from ‘the outside in’ using rigid insulation panels on top of the roof substrate. But the owner also wanted a waterproofing membrane that was high in solar reflectivity to add to the existing cooling properties of the insulation resulting in further energy savings. Skellerup’s Warm Roof solution was specified using Skellerup Enviroclad as the roofing membrane system. This combination of membrane and rigid insulation panels (called polyiso) met the solar reflectivity
and thermal efficiency needs of the owner. This warm roof system achieves higher R-values per inch than its competitors.
for all conditions
The Skellerup Warm Roof solution uses a polyurethane foam-based adhesive system called FAST Adhesive to adhere the insulation to the substrate which has wind uplift properties that rival mechanical fasteners, but negate the thermal bridging that can result from them. The Skellerup Warm Roof Solution with Skellerup Enviroclad membrane offered an effective solution in driving energy efficiency within the building while ensuring a watertight finish. (Since completing this project, the Skellerup Warm Roof has become BRANZ Appraised, No. 713).
Skellerup EcoStar Roof Tiles Wellington’s St Andrews Church underwent an extensive three phase upgrade. The first phase (completed in early 2009), involved renovating the external structure and roof. Due care and attention were the order of the day as the church dates to 1923, is a category one Historic Places Trust Building, the only English Baroque church in the country and a significant Wellington landmark. The roof needed to be replaced, the structure strengthened for earthquakes and concrete repair
and treatment undertaken. It was vital that the new roof was sympathetic to the building’s architectural era. With the green light from the Historic Places Trust, the Wellington City Council and architects, Skellerup EcoStar Majestic Slate roof tiles were selected. The tile provided a watertight solution on the new plywood substrate which braced the building. The finished look complemented the exterior of this outstanding and important piece of historical architecture.
