The company was formed by James Craw in September 2004 and initially employed four staff, with numbers growing to the current 26 staff.

JCL Asphalt offers a comprehensive range of services, from laying large commercial carparks to private driveways and tennis courts. “JCL have always been tennis court specialists,” Craw says. In fact, JCL Asphalt completes about 30 tennis courts each year, both for private and club or school use.
“I personally have very high standards in workmanship, and as the business owner, I’ll be there making sure the job is done right,” Craw says.
Many construction companies use JCL to lay the asphalt on tennis courts that paving machines or trucks cannot gain access to, as the JCL team is highly skilled in hand screeding asphalt. JCL Asphalt has a large fleet of machinery. But what really makes the difference on the job is the skill of the operators behind the machinery. The company employs highly skilled people, many being with the company for a number of years. “We have some good foremen and training of new staff is ongoing. Getting good staff is going to be an issue in the next few years.”

Canterbury A&P Show
Visitors to this year’s Canterbury A & P Show were welcome to come along and meet the team at the JCL Asphalt site C16. A mini tennis court was part of the display and JCL was alongside the Excavator Operator Competition which showcased the construction industry in Canterbury.
