Covering anyone’s painting needs For more than 56 years D.R. (Jack) Gray Ltd has grown into one of Taranaki’s largest and most successful painting contractors. The firm now covers a full range of painting services for industrial, commercial and domestic requirements. Founded in 1956 by the late Jack Gray, the company is owned and operated by his son Tony Gray, who has continued his father’s practice of standing behind the quality of his workmanship. In keeping with family traditions Tony’s son, Nathan Gray joined the company in October 2007 and in 2011 Nathan became manager of the Hawera branch.

Tony Gray’s history with painting dates back to his school days, when he spent holidays painting for his father. He later left school and joined the business permanently. Tony also recognises the importance of doing a professional job in order to ensure his business maintains its reputation for quality work. This is evident by the fact that many local building firms have retained the services of D.R. (Jack) Gray for its finishing work. The company now employs 23 full time staff in Hawera and 18 in the New Plymouth store, which was opened three years ago and is where Tony’s now based. Office manager, Donna Henderson has been with the business for 26 years and says it has been a privilege to watch the business gain a firm reputation, building on its success. “The company has a history of guaranteeing its work. Jack Gray was known and committed to providing a quality service and was one of the only painters back in the 1950s to guarantee his work. Jack’s professional attitude paid off and the business has never been short of work.

“Muralflex has also been applied to many cowsheds throughout Taranaki and the Waikato region for the last 30 years. The big advantage of using Muralflex is that it is resistant to water, weather and abrasion. The tough coating is also easy to clean, which is what makes it so popular with farmers,” she says.
Tony Gray and his staff also work on new construction, renovations and contract maintenance. The business is a member of the Registered Master Painters’ Association and is an accredited Site Safe business. The business is based in New Plymouth and Hawera, with the Hawera branch also operating a retail “Jack started his painting business with one other painter and saw business expand rapidly outlet - Resene Colourshop, at 91 Glover Road. through the 1960s and 1970s, now Tony is committed to the business and his hard work has certainly paid off,” Donna explains. D.R. (Jack) Gray specialises in the application of Muralflex colour and texture spray surfaces, with the business using this application on many dairy factories in the Taranaki and surrounding areas.
