IT IS ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THE SIMPLE ACT OF STAYING POSITIVE CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOUR DAY. I HAVE ALWAYS LIVED WITH THE MOTTO THAT IT IS A CHOICE TO BE HAPPY. BUT WHAT A RIDE THIS YEAR HAS BEEN! THE WINDS OF CHANGE HAVE BEEN BLOWING HARD!
How many of you have struggled to maintain your optimism and joy throughout the tumultuous year we have had? I was lucky enough to be up North at our beach home in Kerikeri when we went into lockdown in Auckland, but as the weeks continued, I started to miss and worry about my friends and family. I missed being in our office and doing the things we do in Auckland - dining out, meeting clients, grabbing coffees, seeing Brenda at Stand Pilates, as so quickly all those simple things disappeared, and I had to create a new routine.
and loved reading them from cover to cover. I modelled as a teenager and was thrilled I was featured in the magazines I loved reading. I have been an editor for 23 years and it was always my dream to work in magazines. I live in Auckland city during the working week and in Kerikeri in the far North in the weekends and I hope to retire in the beautiful North with my wonderful husband Lewis. I am a people person and love working with my clients. I often become very good friends with them. I am fiercely loyal and always see the positive side to any situation. I am a stepmother to two amazing stepchildren, their awesome partners and two beautiful granddaughters. I see it as my most important job to give them my time and love. My husband and I have a little Jack Russell that we rehomed and called Bluey – he is also our child. I love spending weekends at our beach place in Kerikeri, shooting, fishing, swimming, cooking and eating. I love good wine and food. In our family you don’t just eat good food you have to talk about it too. I never look backwards, only forwards and although my lists are long, I always seem to achieve everything I need to in life. In our office we have a quote – ‘we will achieve everything we need to achieve today” it keeps us sane.

different way to my family, friends, and my clients. I know what is important in my life and I know that reaching out to someone that needs it can change their life.
I have tried to look at myself from a bird’s eye view and see who I am and ask myself: am I the person I want to be? Am I the person I dreamt of being? Covid left us raw and we all had to battle some days. Although strangely sometimes letting time stand still makes everything ok.
A little about Eye magazine: We launched in 1996 in Parnell, which makes us 23 years old! We have since become a nationwide title with a small global distribution. Eye magazine has a large online readership but still has consistent printed magazines read by a luxury audience.
I think the most precious thing I have gained from these weeks is special time with loved ones. To be gifted with so much time with my husband and friends was definitely a silver lining. The friends I have formed at our beach place have been the key to my stability over lockdown. To walk, to do yoga, share a wine with and talk about our loves and woes. Our connections in life are invaluable. I watched on social media as many went into overactive training or obsessive baking or simply disappeared. Many were at home by themselves. It’s been a struggle for all in some way.
We travelled to the wonderful Barossa in June and fell in love. Read about our adventures on page 174. One of the highlights was having John from Daimler cars drive us and educate us with his wealth of knowledge as we drove up the beautiful palm driveways and sipped on great wine.
Our businesses, dreams, travel, and normal outdoor activity was put on hold this year and again it has made us rethink, re consider and sometimes recoil with the news. For me, this year has softened me. I feel more connected in a

Cathy has worked tirelessly at home though these months, being very pregnant, yet everyday she worked hard to complete our tasks and support our team. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU RAN THE WORLD FOR A DAY?
I much prefer the world to be run by different opinions based on each nation’s freedom to choose what’s best for them. I don’t believe anybody can prescribe their opinion for the rest of the world! Variety brings cultural richness, and I am all about
I admire women who stand up for their goals and express their opinions fearlessly. The free spirits who celebrate their true freedom regardless of the pressure implied by society, conventions, or taboos.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PERFUME?
I typically prefer to change my perfumes with the change of seasons, but I have been obsessed
AFTER MOVING TO NEW ZEALAND AS A FASHION BUSINESS OWNER, HAMI WASTED NO TIME IN OBSERVING AND IMMERSING HERSELF INTO THE NZ FASHION INDUSTRY. SHE SAW AN OBVIOUS GAP IN THE MARKET FOR VARIETY AND CONTEMPORARY BRANDS OFFERED AT A GREAT QUALITY AND AN ACCESSIBLE PRICE FOR EVERYONE. HAMI HAS USED ALL HER FASHION KNOWLEDGE TO SELECT TURKISH BRANDS WHICH ARE HIGH-END AND DESIGNED FOR TODAY’S WOMEN.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HOLIDAY DESTINATION?
I love tropical islands, anywhere surrounded by ocean, great food and drink and relaxing in a bikini!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE GARMENT FROM YOUR SPRING COLLECTION?
I normally curate pieces that I love and adore, the pieces that I can see myself wearing. We are so lucky that fashion has brought us the most amazing colours ever this season, from the hot pinks to the fresh greens. I love them all but if I had to choose just one, I think I would buy the Santorini Sunset jacket and pants – this look is a must have for every modern womanfeminine and powerful.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX?
I love travelling and reading. I also take immense pleasure out of cooking and taking long walks with my friends.
WHAT ARE YOUR 2022 GOALS?
My main goal for 2022 is to introduce my stylish, premium quality clothes to all NZ women. The effect of the right outfit on our good feelings, self-confidence and self-expression is incredible! I don’t see us here behind the fashion in the rest of the world, we live in this stunning country with so much potential. I am trying to keep up, if not stay ahead with my line of fashion. With the freshness and variety of my line, I hope I can bring the joy of having fabulous outfits to NZ women and empower them so they can embrace their beautiful bodies regardless of age, race, and shape.
KIRSTIN O’BRIEN OF TORY & KO JEWELLERS TELLS US HOW TO IMMERSE OURSELVES IN ALL THINGS COCKTAIL THIS SUMMER.
Summer is the perfect time to make a splash onto the cocktail scene. And not only the drinking variety. Cocktail Rings have bedazzled jewellery-lovers over the ages and there’s no better time than summer to get your own bespoke gemstone ring and soak in the brilliance of its sparkle. Let the experts at Morell Bistro in Auckland and TORY & KO. Jewellers in Wellington help you with your cocktail adventure this summer. Imagine the rainbow of colourful choices you have pairing your cocktail ring to ultimately match your cocktail!
Here are a few suggestions from Morell Bistro to get the sparkle started…
You can sit at the bar and chat with the mixologist while admiring your new Champagne Diamond Ring glowing in the late afternoon sunshine and watch their skills as they whip up the perfect “Com’s Tollins” Cocktail (yes, I did spell it correctly. No, I haven’t been drinking on the job).
If you are anything like me, you’ll be drawn to pink hues, so what could be more beautiful than Morell’s “1-2 drop” cocktail with its fresh, blushing colour and pretty flower paired with your pretty Morganite and Diamond Flower Ring?
Or perhaps your Peridot and Diamond ring needs to match your drink? Look no further than Morell’s “New Girl” cocktail (It comes with a garnish of cucumber so dinner is mostly covered - although you must try their crayfish ravioli).
Girls Night! This one is straight out of the set of Sex in the City: glam it up with your beautiful Blue Topaz & Diamond cocktail Ring with showstopper earrings to match & be glamorously matching the décor as your friends arrive…
Perhaps it is time to meet up with some old school chums? Bask in the glow of their admiration for your sparkling French Amethyst and Pink Tourmaline Cocktail Ring. The Scapegrace Black Gin from the Black Negroni will also help with the glow! You can tell them TORY & KO. Jewellers designed it for you when you visited their boutique in Wellington.
Just because we can’t travel to exotic islands or sophisticated European cities doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy ourselves. In fact, there’s no better time to get out and support NZ businesses. All around this country we have world-class restauranteurs, chefs, maître-d’s, sommeliers, artisan brewers, baristas & mixologists - all creating the best food & drink experiences for us to enjoy - and we can certainly taste all of it in style if we choose. It would be rude not to!
While we are talking about NZ business: now, more than ever, we should be supporting our local designers. From fashion, interiors to jewellery - make sure to know where your beautiful garments, cushions or jewels are manufactured. Surrounding yourself with NZ made is a source of pride and one which we should all embrace.
Now, back to the cocktails! Imagine lifting your martini glass to your lips and tasting the piquant flavours of the taking names foamy cocktail while flashing your friends a glimpse of your new Art Deco Yellow Gold Citrine Ring and Broome Pearl & Champagne Diamond Earrings...
Immerse yourself in the wonderful cocktails Morell Bistro and TORY & KO. Jewellers have to offer and soak up the summer spirit in style.

It was then that she came to the conclusion that superwomen tend to neglect the most essential relationship they have – the one with themselves.

MUMS AND DAUGHTERS SHARE LOTS OF SECRETS, PASSING DOWN WISDOM THROUGH THE GENERATIONS. MOTHER-TODAUGHTER BEAUTY ADVICE IS PARTICULARLY PRECIOUS –WE ARE, AFTER ALL, PRODUCTS OF OUR GENES.
Many factors affect how our skin ages, with genetics –along with sun exposure – playing a huge role. But while you may love the fact you’ve inherited your mum’s wacky sense of humour, do you also have to inherit the wrinkles she often complains about?
Not if Mum is top cosmetic physician Dr Teresa Cattin. Highly trained in the use of Botox® and cosmetic fillers, Teresa has more than 20 years’ experience in cosmetic medicine, is a past President of the New Zealand College of Appearance Medicine and is regularly invited to speak at international conferences.
She works with her daughter Leigh, a trained nurse in her final year of medical training, at the highly regarded clinic FaceWorks, on Auckland’s Apollo Drive. Leigh, who has a particular interest in Botox® and lip enhancements for younger patients, has already developed a loyal following.
Each is a devotee of the French approach to appearance medicine known as La French Touche. The French believe minimal amounts of Botox® should be used on carefully selected areas of the face to soften and refresh rather than significantly change facial features. The results are naturally beautiful. “It’s not simply about softening age-related changes on the face,” Leigh says. “Rather, it’s about carefully enhancing a client’s natural beauty.”
But it’s not only appearance medicine techniques that help women, young and old, to age positively. Teresa and Leigh are as passionate about good skincare as they are about artfully applied Botox and dermal fillers. “Next to sunscreen, applying a moisturiser is the most important thing you can do to prevent premature ageing, chronological and environmental,” says Cattin. “Good genes and avoiding the sun gets you so far. How well your skin ages will also be determined by how good your beauty products are.”
FaceWorks skincare, developed by Teresa, is a firm favourite with beauty editors throughout the country and has a loyal following among those wanting an affordable and effective cosmeceutical alternative.
The 12-product range includes a line-up of wellformulated moisturisers, sun protection, cleanser, a primer and an AHA-based exfoliator. There is also spankingly new Day Crème with seven per cent vitamin B3, or niacinamide. A powerhouse of a skincare ingredient, niacinamide’s many benefits include the ability to soothe skin, minimise pores, even skin tone and strengthen the skin’s barrier.
DISCLAIMER: A charge applies. You will need to pay for treatment. Botox® is a Prescription Medicine containing 100 units of clostridium botulinum Type A toxin complex for injection. It is used for the treatment of frown lines, crows feet and horizontal forehead lines. It should be administered only by trained medical professionals. Cautions: people with defective neuro-muscular transmission disorders, presence of infection at site of injection, glaucoma, pregnancy and lactation. Possible side effects include headaches, pain, burning or redness at injection site, local muscle weakness including drooping eyelids, lack of feeling & nausea. Talk to your specialist about the benefits/risks of this procedure of if you have any concerns or side effects. Allergan Pharmaceuticals, Auckland.

DR FRANCES PITSILIS, FOUNDER OF SKINFRESH, IS A LEADER IN THE INDUSTRY. SHE HAS TAUGHT COSMETIC MEDICINE AT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES AND HAS EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS IN ANTI-AGING MEDICINE.
At her clinic in Milford, Pitsilis doesn’t bring in any technology without deeply researching it first. Any technology that is brought into the clinic must firstly be safe and effective. After that, it must be patient friendly. And this was true when she came across truSculpt. Pitsilis explains.
“Fat reduction technologies began with ‘fat freezing’ but in latter years, there has been more comfortable truSculpt Radiofrequency technology available. Before bringing it into my clinic I wanted to research the scientific literature, attend conferences and read up on it thoroughly.”
Fat Freezing technologies take about an hour to do on one area, such as the abdomen, and is likely to take up to three hours for three areas. After the treatment there is then a period of massage. After treatment side effects can include bruising and nerve damage - this is due to the initial squeezing of the tissues”
When it comes to cost, fat freezing and truSculpt Radiofrequency technology is about the same. As is the actual fat reduction (an average of 24% fat reduction).
So, what’s the difference? Comfort, speed and no side effects. Having your abdomen treated with truSculpt feels like a hot stone massage and only takes a few minutes. Basically, it’s a walk-in walk out treatment where you can go straight back to work afterwards.
• Benefits of truSculpt:
• No surgery, downtime or anaesthetics
• No needles, clamping or freezing
• No side effects
Treatable areas include Abdomen, flanks, double chin, back fat, bra fat, arm fat and thigh fat. Dr Pitsilis says that the double chin treatment is particularly effective: “It only involves a few minutes of tolerable heat, then you can go back to work, as opposed to the injectable treatment which is uncomfortable and carries with it a recovery period.
Pitsilis, who has lectured around the world about the technology, highly recommends tru,Sculpt, however does provide a word of caution.
“Although people who have small amounts of stubborn fat only need one treatment, be aware that 24% is the average fat reduction and no technology is a cure for serious weight problems.
Slim n Trim
Dr Pitsilis and her team at Skinfresh have started a weekly membership for fat reduction, Slim n Trim.

A GOOD SUNSCREEN THAT PROTECTS YOUR SKIN FROM AGEING IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FOUNDATIONS OF ANY SKINCARE REGIME.
At Megan Dempsey ‘The Clinic’, they believe that there is simply no point investing in good quality skincare if you don’t use a minimum of 30 SPF zinc-based sunblock each and every day.
New Zealand unfortunately has the highest rates of melanoma in the world, and Megan Dempsey’s Ultimate Block™ was carefully formulated to help protect us from the harsh sun and environmental conditions. While most kiwis say that they use sunblock, they often only use it in the summer or when they are outdoors, but Megan notes that if you are serious about having great skin, this approach just isn’t good enough.
Ultimate Block™ provides you with the ultimate in antiaging and sun protection with physical zinc-based protection against UVA and UVB. It provides SPF45 protection and has undergone SPF testing in Australia to
prove it. Not many people are aware, that only zinc based sunscreens block UVA and UVB sunrays equally.
The reason that this is important, is UVB rays are the short wave length radiation sun rays that are here in highest intensity over the summer months. These are strong and can easily burn the skin – especially at peak times (usually 10am2pm). However, most people don’t realise that there is still a lot of sun damage caused before you burn, just through daily sun exposure. UVA long wave length radiation sun rays are here all year round at the same intensity and often penetrate without you even feeling it.
Wherever you have natural light, you have UVA, and it can even come through windows. UVA rays are proven to degrade collagen, thinning the skin, often causing sunspots, increased pigmentation and can over time, contribute to photoaging and skin cancer formation.
Megan is passionate about skin health, anti-ageing and skin cancer prevention and has truly designed a sunscreen that does it all, “We recommend you wear this daily as a moisturiser all year round, and remember, there’s more to this product than just a quality sunscreen.”
Megan is a highly qualified Registered Nurse, having completed her Bachelor of Nursing Degree, with post graduate diplomas. She possesses a wealth of knowledge in how to slow the ageing process, rejuvenation, prevention, and awareness of skin cancer. Her practice, ‘The Clinic’ encapsulates the experience she has garnered over her time in the industry and continues to ensure her commitment to making women and men of all ages feel great about themselves.

Aotearoa New Zealand is filled with iconic businesses, entrepreneurs and the ingenuity that makes things just click. New Zealanders know they can trust in these businesses and better yet, can trust the product. The beauty industry is one where this is of the utmost importance and becoming more so as the field increases its competitiveness.
One name that continues to stand out amongst the crowd is Sávar.
A New Zealand beauty company with founding principles grounded in simplicity, purity and nature, their ambition when launching in Auckland in 2010 was to formulate and deliver thoughtful, quality products for face, body, and hair.
Using the best of science and technology, Sávar has become known for its innovative natural skincare. Their beautiful products are effective, safe, and unique, and work for all types of skin. This is coupled with an expertise in pure plant oils, natural extracts, and potent botanical complexes to create products with integrity.
A rejuvenating facial mask infused with tofu
The newly formulated Sávar skincare line-up is the brand’s cult favourite Antioxidant Hydrating Mask, which is being relaunched in December 2021 as the Restorative Tofu Facial Mask.
Already recognised for delivering users a silken ‘tofu skin’ texture and restoring skin’s radiant glow, this next-generation mask, harnessing the benefits of New Zealand blackcurrant and pomegranate, has been further enhanced with skin-smoothing soy peptides touting six skinsaving benefits. Tackling everything from collagen production, oxidative protection, pigmentation, and reducing inflammation while providing superior skin-smoothing qualities and on-going hydration.
The Sávar Restorative Tofu Facial Mask, which is gentle enough for everyday use, has garnered popularity for its ability to deeply moisturise while improving skin’s texture and firmness.
Sávar’s premium quality formulations are made to international standards in New Zealand in GMP certified laboratories. The result?
A luxurious New Zealand beauty and skincare brand suitable for all skin types, including even the most sensitive and delicate. The brand’s newest collaboration celebrates another iconic New Zealand brand, Boh Runga jewellery.
Sávar x Boh Runga
Just as it was a career in music that led Boh Runga to create jewellery, it was working as an artist that led Vicky Woolford to create Sávar. The Sávar x Boh Runga Stud represents the artistic roots that both brands share and a belief that approaching life’s challenges and opportunities with a creative mind leads to beautiful outcomes. A stylised brushstroke is the natural hero of the design; a symbol of creativity, articulated in Sávar’s signature gold.
“The lovely Sávar brushstroke is the natural hero articulated in pretty gold. We used, as the basis of the stud, the disc for my logo studs, the design that was gifted to the royal family by our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern,” says Boh Runga.
The Sávar stud appeals with its classic simplicity that you can wear every day or for a special night out. savarbeauty.co.nz
Whether it’s a first impression, a high-powered meeting or a lunch date, women and men are quickly adopting skincare routines and procedures to feel confident.
Of course, then it’s all about finding the right clinic that you can trust with these procedures.
With more and more and popping up with good - and bad - reviews on social media, websites and groups - where do you start?
The team at Forever Shine Skin & Anti-Ageing Clinic understands this well. Led by Ronita Sharma, the awardwinning team at the boutique skin and anti-ageing clinic have been helping men and women for over a decade. While the reviews speak for themselves, Forever Shine is no stranger to major accolades. Awarded the Best Business Beauty Clinic two years in a row, and offering one of the best natural anti-aging treatments without chemicals in the industry. For owner Ronita, the true testament to the experience is the client retention.

Anti-ageing collagen
Skin health is affected by age and external factors. Collagen helps to promote healthy, radiant skin by nourishing our body with the nutritional building blocks required to improve skin structure.
Collagen is one of the most important structural substances in our bodies, accounting for 25 to 30% of its total protein – 75% of our skin is collagen. It is the key component for supple and radiant healthy skin.
As we age, our body loses its ability to make collagen, causing it to break down. Loss of collagen leads to a collapsing dermal layer and this contributes to wrinkles and loss of elasticity. The environment also affects our skin and UVA/UVB exposure induces skin damage and loss of collagen. As such, everyone can benefit from taking collagen and maintaining the integrity of the extracellular matrix is essential for a youthful skin appearance.
Collagen capsules provide multidimensional benefits for skin, bone and joint health by regenerating the cells needed for maintaining an active lifestyle and enhanced immunity, health, strength and elasticity throughout the body. Available online, Forever Shine only sources highquality marine collagen capsules from Japan.
Looking after your skin can be a challenging job, with the strong NZ sun and wind and the need to constantly hydrate our skin and keep it nourished and cleansed to prevent aging! It is always a wonderful feeling to go and let someone else do the work. Here are some of the most luxurious facials that we love - treat yourself this summer.

BEAUTY HAS NO GENDER, IT IS EVERYWHERE AND WITHIN EVERYONE AND BEAUTY FOCUS IS ALL ABOUT HOW YOU LOOK AND FEEL BOTH INSIDE AND OUT. AND NOW IT’S NEVER BEEN EASIER, WITH A NEW COLLAGEN DRINK THAT’S TAKING THE WORLD BY STORM.
While the latest buzz term is ‘collagen’ you could be forgiven for not quite knowing why you need it and which brand or product to go for, with so many on the market these days.
So here’s our take on all things collagen!
Simply put, collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and it’s vital to both looking and more importantly feeling young. In fact, it makes up 75% of our skin, hair and nails and 70 - 90% of our organs, bones, muscles, cartilage, ligaments & tendons. So pretty important stuff! It not only improves skin structure and health, stimulating hair and nail growth but is also antiinflammatory, relieves joint pain and supports your gut microbiome - what’s not to love?
Young skin (age 23)
Red Areas = Collagen
So if we have so much in our bodies why do we need a collagen product, you ask? Well, there are 2 main reasons why collagen depletes in our bodies. The first reason, unfortunately, is ageing. As we enter our mid-20’s we begin to lose approx. 1.5% per year, so by age 35 you’ve lost as much as 20% of your collagen, and by age 65 over 60%. This percentage can be higher, because of reason #2. Harsh UV conditions, more specifically harsh blue light which damages our Collagen & Elastin. Damaging blue light wavelengths are everywhere, not only coming from sun exposure but are emitted from computers, cellphones, TV’s, ipads, even your home or office lighting. It’s impossible to avoid.
You’ve tried the rest now try the best In our search for the best collagen product available we discovered that not all collagens are created equal. We fell in love with Beauty Focus™ Collagen+ because it is the only collagen product we could find with published double-blind clinical research on their formula. While other brands use unverified testimonials and 3rd party research that doesn’t relate to their specific formulas. Beauty Focus Collagen+ was developed over 6 years by a team of 75 scientists who have published clinical results showing an increase in collagen by an amazing 65% and elastin by 18% within eight weeks. We also love the ‘Plus’ in Collagen+ - it’s their powerful formula that does more than other collagen or hydrolyzed collagen peptide formulas due to their unique ingredient blend.
1. Bioactive Collagen Peptides® - This unique patented peptide ‘fingerprint’ acts like a unique key that has consistently shown to have the highest stimulatory effect of all collagens tested and show improvements in skin elasticity and reduced wrinkles.
2. Lutein - created from marigold flowers, this carotenoid works as an antioxidant to help protect against oxidative stressors and it protects against that harmful blue lightthink of it as an internal sunscreen.
3. Phytoceramides - these are similar to ceramides naturally found in skin, so they help keep your skin’s moisture barrier healthy and hydrated all day long.
So in short, look and feel gorgeous with Beauty Focus Collagen+ as it kickstarts collagen and elastin formation, visibly reduces fine lines and wrinkles, boosts firmness and hydration as well as supporting healthier hair and nails for an all-out beautiful you. It’s a no-brainer really.
Reasons you will love it:
● Helps support increases collagen by 65% and elastin by 18% within 8 weeks
● Supports skin hydration and healthy moisturisation
● Features lutein a powerful antioxidant and blue light blocker
● Supports skin integrity and structure
● Made with zero artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners.
● Versatile citrus powder - can be drunk warm or cold, or mixed into your smoothie.
● Subtle citrus flavor tastes yummy!
● Hands down, it’s literally one of the easiest, yet effective ways, to look and feel young!
● And many other benefits for a healthier happier you.
Using Collagen+ is super easy, simply mix one scoop of Collagen+ with 250 ml of cold or warm water and enjoy once daily. That’s it, simply sip your way to skin that’s inside out gorgeous with this worldclass win-win from within. For more information, please email vanessa@magazinepublishers.co.nz
“I’M KIND OF A SCEPTIC HAVING TRIED SO MANY BRANDS. I CAN HONESTLY SAY… THIS PRODUCT HAS TRULY CHANGED MY HAIR, MY NAILS AND MY SKIN, I HONESTLY CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT IT”

LINDA CODEGONI HAS BEEN A BEAUTY THERAPIST AND SPECIALIST IN ANTIAGEING TECHNOLOGIES FOR 13 YEARS, TRAINING AND GRADUATING AS AN AYURVEDA THERAPIST IN 2007 AT THE C.SURYA SCHOOL IN MILAN.
Since 2015, she has been working with Lpg Endermologie® in medical industry and trained with the leader in clinical facials HydraFacial. We spoke with Linda to see what sets Look Lab apart.
Why Look Lab?
I wanted to offer a different and holistic approach to beauty and wellness, like what is offered in Europe, as I found it’s still a young concept in New Zealand.
What is your advice on skincare?
Keep it simple and get advice on the right products for your skin type. Stick to the old routine of cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen! It’s also important to use specific supplements like vitamins, resveratrol, hyaluronic acid and the most bespoke collagen, (which I personally can’t live without!) At Look Lab we offer skin protocols that consider your lifestyle as well, so we take into consideration your diet, and use of existing products.
What is the most common treatment people come to Look Lab for?
The most popular word in the beauty industry today is ‘skin resurfacing’ – especially when talking about anti-ageing and pigmentation. The range leading the way in this skin resurfacing is pHformula, which is the first pharmacosmeceutical in the world, offering unprecedented, controlled skin regeneration with minimal downtime. So, after a detailed skin analysis, we provide clients with a home care starter kit and create a treatment plan which involves advanced professional treatments on a regular basis.
With summer on the way, what treatments are the most effective to achieve the perfect silhouette in time?
Sure Lpg endermologie! I have been working with this French company for a long time and have always achieved great results without any side effects. It’s also absolutely pain free. Treating cellulite can be difficult, but Lpg is the only 100% natural, non-invasive, non-aggressive mechanical skin stimulation technique which reactivates the cells’ processes. It basically works by using a patented Alliance head to stimulate the skin and fatty tissues to soften them and make them less fibrous. This stimulation helps release fat and activates blook and lymphatic circulation, and, most importantly, the results are visible after only 6 weeks.

At Iain Stephens Floral Design located in Remuera, we love collaborating with luxury brands and working together to create spectacular events. Last November we had the privilege of doing the floral designs for the Bvlgari event at Matakana Estate. We created a floating, floral Bvlgari B for the swimming pool. It looked very glamourous in the candle light, surrounded by scattered blooms floating on the water’s surface.
For the table arrangements Bvlgari suggested a saffron colour theme with hints of red; we created larger, statement arrangements in magnificent martini glasses and the sweetest matching posies in small fish bowl vases. We also created firey arrangements to go around the Bvlgari logo in the vibrant saffron colour theme.
It is always a pleasure collaborating with gorgeous brands and our friends at Matakana Estate who we collaborate with often. We believe that by combining the inspiring ideas of different luxury brands with the floral design skills of our creative team we can create magical designs that are completely unique.

Thanks to CarbonClick, this issue of Eye Magazine is Climate Positive! That means we are offsetting 120% the average carbon footprint of every copy of the magazine. Neat huh?
CarbonClick is an NZ enviro-tech company that makes carbon offsetting simple, affordable and completely transparent. So far they’ve offset 23.5 million + kg of CO2! That’s the amount absorbed by over 1 million trees growing in a year, and equivalent to driving 3,760 laps of the equator!
“One of the best things about CarbonClick is our passion and our drive. Our team is driven by our mission to help humans tackle the climate crisis and strive towards a sustainable, healthy planet. We help empower businesses and individuals by connecting them with certified carbon offsetting projects that restore native ecosystems and create sustainable jobs.” -
Dave Rouse
No one is exempt from the ripple effects of climate change – so it’s in everyone’s interest to take climate action and reduce carbon emissions. To tackle climate change in the most efficient way, we need to reduce first and offset the rest. Offsetting is an immediate way of balancing out the carbon we cannot easily reduce by supporting climate friendly projects like planting trees and green energy production.
Three ways to start taking climate action:
1. Get the full picture. A really powerful first step that everyone can take is to find out what their carbon footprint is. CarbonClick has developed a really quick and simple calculator to help you do this. By understanding where you have the biggest impact, you can start making the reductions needed to live more lightly on the planet.
2. Start reducing. Effective ways to reduce your emissions is by limiting car travel, your household power usage, your meat consumption and buying locally.
3. Offset the rest. For the things you struggle to replace with a greener alternative, e.g., flying to England to see your family, you can easily offset through CarbonClick. Your offsets then go on to fund great projects like native forest regeneration in Kaikoura, NZ, and creating hot water with solar energy in Bangalore, India.

YOU’VE
A QUAINT TOWNSHIP IN HASTINGS, HAVELOCK NORTH PUNCHES WELL ABOVE ITS WEIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO EATING, DRINKING, CULTURE AND MORE.
With its warm and sunny climate, surrounded by orchards and vineyards, and naturally occurring bushes and trees, this country town paints a cultural picture. The main village is located at the foot of Te Mata Peak with gracious homes dotted on the lower slopes of the hills. Without doubt Havelock North has a special charm, producing some of the country’s best fruit, bread, Maori culture and food and wine festivals.
Hawke’s Bay is blessed with fertile soils and a warm temperate climate, a match made in heaven for PickMee fruit orchard. From apples, and pears, to stone fruit, this family run business which began in 1914 by the Altham family has been in business for three generations. PickMee are proud to be growing some of the best pip and stone fruit in New Zealand. With 120 hectares of orchards in Waikato and 350 hectares in Hawkes Bay, PickMee supplies to Countdowns all across New Zealand and exports all over the world.
Another successful family business started in Havelock North is OMGoodness Bread. Developed at home over 10 years, it was primarily to provide high quality nutritional bread for people who suffer from coeliac’s disease and gluten intolerances. OMGoodness bread is a Kiwi made recipe with over 70 minerals and trace elements. OMGoodness products
are gluten-free, vegan, organic, paleo and refined-sugar free but they are universally loved by everyone regardless of their dietary restrictions. With no decent options available at the supermarket, the goal for OMGoodness was to create a loaf that provided complete nutrition whilst also retaining a soft, spongy and moist texture.
It’s ‘all hands on deck’ for the months of June and November as Hawke’s Bay locals come together to showcase the abundance of produce within Hawke’s Bay’s stunning landscapes at the annual Food and Wine Classic Event (better known as F.A.W.C). The 10th F.A.W.C Summer Series runs from November 5th to the 14th 2021. To honour 10 years of spectacular events, the region’s culinary tastemakers will deliver a dazzling line up of more than 50 events, including a new signature showcase luncheon that will act as a cornerstone of the Summer Series for years to come. The entire 10-day festival will be a stunning display of the very best of Food and Wine Country as the region’s finest chefs, winemakers, artisans and purveyors work alongside incredible visiting talent.
Duncan Smith is a 3rd generation Central Hawke’s Bay landowner, farming sheep and beef animals. Duncan and his family provide the opportunity for discerning customers
to experience this exceptional, quality beef and lamb that is fed on lush green plantain, clovers and quality grasses from the beautiful nutrient rich paddocks of Patangata Station in the Hawke’s Bay. All the beef and lamb sold at Waipawa Butchery in Havelock North comes from Patangata Station. Waipawa Butchery provides premium quality beef and lamb that have exceptional flavours, antibiotic free, GM free and hormone free. Waipawa Butchery delivers their 100% quality grass fed premium cuts throughout New Zealand, making them accessible for everyone, straight from Patangata station to your table.
Something that most people might not know about the Havelock North is that it’s rich in Māori culture and mythology, none more so than in the formation of the region’s defining coastline. Many of Hawke’s Bay’s most iconic natural landmarks take their names from Māori mythology. Havelock North’s rich Māori heritage can be experienced first-hand through a visit to one of their cultural sites as part of a Māori tourism experience. These experiences in Hawke’s Bay are boutique in nature, with authentic connections between the host and guests creating genuine opportunities to learn about the region’s rich Māori heritage and modern-day relevance.
WAIPAWA BUTCHERY IS A 100% PRIVATELY OWNED BUTCHERY FINISHING ITS OWN PURE ANGUS HEIFER BEEF AND SUFFOLK-TEXEL EWE LAMB STOCK FOR THEIR OWN BUTCHERIES. (ALL FEMALE MEAT.)
Duncan Smith chooses each animal at prime condition from Patangata Station in Central Hawke’s Bay without using barking dogs to load animals onto trucks for the abattoir, so as not to stress them. When animals are stressed the meat quality drops.
The Waipawa Butchery team uses old-school butchering methods requiring expert skills and care and ensuring Duncan and his wife Annabel, know precisely what they’re selling in their Hawkes Bay retail shops at 27 High Street, Waipawa, and 4 Joll Road, Havelock North.
Pure Angus beef is hung to dry age on the bone for three weeks. It’s beautifully marbled, juicy, heifer meat. “We don’t age meat in airless vacuum packs,” says Annabel.
Their Suffolk-Texel lamb is chosen for its superb meat. “Female lamb meat doesn’t have as many hormones as male meat so is naturally more succulent, tender and flavoursome.”
Trim from these premium cuts is all that goes into their delicious Waipawa sausages. “You know it’s pure Angus female meat that has been finished on grass 15km away going into your beef sausage.”
All beef and lamb finished on Patangata Station is GE free, antibiotic and hormone free, and 100% grass-fed.
The full carcass breakdown philosophy extends to their chicken and pork range too. Bostock Brother’s organic free-range chicken is broken down by hand daily for the cabinet display.
All their 100% NZ Pig Accredited pork is female and broken down by hand into amazing cuts ready for you to pick up instore or purchase through their extensive on-line shop.
Waipawa Butchery uses an overnight courier service to get cuts of meat to any town or city address in New Zealand.
Owning the Station and the retail shops gives the Smiths control of the entire process, guaranteeing consistently high quality meat for their customers. Patangata Station also supplies fastidious chefs at select restaurants who want to know exactly where meat has come from and how it has been cut.
Delivering consistent quality by offering the same breed, gender, and size of beast daily is unique in New Zealand to Patangata Station. And it tastes so good.

BEFORE I GET ONTO THE SUBJECT OF THIS SERMON: “GOD SAVE ME FROM STUPID PEOPLE”, A COUPLE OF DIGRESSIONS.
The first is that I confronted a birthday quite recently. Things are getting a bit scary, not only for the age (69) but for the seemingly ever-increasing speed of the days and weeks of my life. I look at the mokopuna and hope that I’ll be around to see them into adulthood. The ‘Head Mokopuna’ is rising 10, so there would seem to be a statistically-good chance of seeing her into her 20s but the youngest (as we speak) is 4; I’ll be a grumpy old bastard of 85, if he gets to 20 but I live in hope, I hope.
I’m not concerned about a demise, provided it’s on my terms. Regular readers (self-aggrandisement alert) will know of my fears of becoming demented and of having to live a life ‘smelling of urine and antiseptic’; fortunately, my BFF (“Fatty”) has decided to act prophylactically and insists he’s coming around next week to take me out (and not for a shop). I would like to think that, by the time of my pegging out (my grandmother taught me to play cribbage), I will be able to call in the ‘Exit’ people to allow me to ‘sleep the long sleep’ with dignity retained.
I seem to have veered off into some dark places; “Mr Opinionator, come back!” Ahhh, what was I doing? It was my birthday, you say? So, the Love of my Life gave me a birthday card which reflects a marriage of seeming eternal length: My Sweet, the sentiment is reciprocated, even though the fact that you annoy me is entirely my fault, for which I apologise as sincerely as you would expect. The second digression is that, I read this morning, “The original notion of thehot Big Bang, where the Universe emerged from an infinitely hot, dense, and small singularity – and has been expanding and cooling, full of matter and radiation ever since – is largely incorrect. The picture is largely correct but there’s a cut-off to how far back in time we can extrapolate it.” (An article by Ethan Siegel dated 30 October 2021).
In short, if you are still awake, it seems that ‘inflation’ beats a ‘singularity’ 3 of a kind versus 2 pairs), so there needs to be another explanation as to what happened before inflation because “inflation… wipes out any information that came before the final few moments [of inflation]; where it ended and gave rise to our hot Big Bang”. Well, that’s ruined my day and it’s not as if I have all that many left.
Stupid people – there’s a lot of them. Richard Dawkins once said: “Twitter is a daily reminder that 50 percent of the population are of below average intelligence. If that insults you, please unfollow me.” In one of my earlier pieces, I calculated that 13.5% of a jury was going to have an IQ between 70 and 85 points.
In a May 2021 poll, 53% of Republicans believed that Trump won the 2020 election. In September 2021, a poll showed that an increase in that group to 59%.
Related to that group, I suspect, there are still about 20% of Americans who oppose vaccinations for Covid. Locally, I had a person call me a few days ago and she asked me what I thought of Ivermectin for Covid treatment (I’m not a health professional). Not all that many days previously, I had read an article which suggested that arguing with anti-vaxxers was a waste of time as there is nothing Joe or Joelle Bloggs can say which will shake an anti-vaxxer’s world view; bugger that.
I pointed out that the FDA in the States most definitely, does not approve Ivermectin for Covid; I mentioned that it is approved for some biological problems, such as parasitic worms and lice
but Covid was a virus. Rhetorically, I hope, I suggested that she wouldn’t take an antibiotic drug, such as penicillin, for a virus, so why would Ivermectin be different?
Somewhere in the discussion, I noted that the CDC had sent out a warning about misusing Ivermectin for Covid, all of which fell on deaf ears. She had been researching herself and there were studies...
In a plagiaristic sort of way, I adopted the thinking of a scribe I had seen on Facebook, who was arguing with someone on the merits of vaccination and who said, in response to this gem: ”So, because the CDC said it, you’re just going to blindly listen to them without doing your own research?”
Answer: “YES. 100% Yes. YES. YES. YES.
What fucking research am I going to do that is going to be more valid or valuable than research from a government agency that spends $6.5 BILLION on studying diseases?
Do you honestly think your Google skills are worth six and a half billion dollars a year of scientific research by scientists specializing in that field?”
What I said was a tad less emphatic; I said something along the lines: “So, you’re telling me that your Googling Ivermectin, while sitting on the toilet, gives you a more reliable outcome than listening to the CDC who spends $6.5b researching serious disease issues?”
Apparently, I hadn’t read “the studies” and she wasn’t changing her world view. To round off, I have been reading about an Italian economist called Carlo Cipolla (what a great name), who wrote a tongue-in-cheek article called ‘The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity’. I insist that you go off and read it but, before you go, I offer his five basic laws:
1. Quote: “Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.” Right off the bat, he’s wrong, because I do not underestimate (hence, this piece) but, maybe he’s right and I do underestimate? Curse you Carlo Cipolla!
2. Quote: “The probability that a certain person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.” The explanation is that “stupidity is equally distributed among all groups of people”.
3. Quote: A stupid person is one who causes losses to another person or a group of people while they gain nothing or may even suffer losses; “In other words, you are what you do. Not what you say or think. Truly intelligent people take smart actions and care about the well-being of others.”
4. Quote: Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular, non-stupid people constantly forget that in any time and place and circumstance dealing and/or hanging out with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake; True dat!
5. Quote: Stupid people are the most dangerous type of people; As explained: “Intelligent people are predictable and are concerned for the well-being of others. The stupid are unpredictable creators of mayhem and don’t care who their actions affect.” There are some truly stupid people around.
Righto, off I go to finish off one of the approximately 780 weekends left in my life.
Dyson’s products help to create a healthier home environment by making it easier and more efficient to clean than ever. Developed by a team of 370 engineers globally, Dyson’s most powerful cordless vacuum, the Dyson V15 Detect, features innovative laser detection and nifty attachments, to help you get the deepest clean throughout your home.
Dyson’s latest vacuum innovation uses laser technology to reveal hidden dust, integrating a precisely positioned laser into the cleaner head that contrasts between dust and floor, providing satisfying visual proof as you clean. The laser illuminates dust particles that might be invisible to the eye, and automatically increases suction power when it comes across a large amount of dust.
The machine also uses an acoustic piezo sensor to analyse household dust at 15,000 times a second, showing you the exact size and number of particles being sucked up on a LCD screen at the top of the vacuum. This means you won’t miss a thing when cleaning and you can have peace of mind knowing that you deep-clean every time.
Having spent more time indoors over the past year, it’s no wonder many of us feel the need to clean our homes more frequently to remove the additional dust and daily build-up.
It might shock you to learn what lies within the nooks and crevices of our homes. Dyson microbiologists have studied the make-up of household dust, revealing dust mites and their faceaes, dander, and pollen are among the most common indoor pollutants that can exacerbate allergies and respiratory health conditions.
For reassurance that your home is truly clean, the Dyson V15 Detect provides powerful three-in-one cleaning for the entire household, meaning you can tackle everything from floors to car upholstery, hard-to-reach areas to mattresses and cots.
Dyson has also designed a new anti-tangle hair screw tool to transform the cleaning experience. The attachment does away with the need to remove tangled hair with the thoughtfully designed conical brush bar. Engineers have delicately tweaked the precise angle of the bristles on the tool to spiral hair off the brush and into the bin.
In addition, the new anti-tangle High Torque cleaner head has 56 polycarbonate teeth, which look like a comb. These small teeth prevent tangling around the bristles when you’re cleaning and automatically clears hair from the brush bar, so you don’t have to manually, rejoice!
Lightweight, cordless and more robust than ever, the Dyson V15 is perfect for wood, tiles and carpeted floors. It has been designed to make cleaning a breeze and keep your home at its healthiest.

UNLIKE MANY OTHER TV SHOWS, “UNSCRIPTED” BRINGS YOU AUTHENTIC CONTENT THAT FOCUSES ON CURRENT TOPICS AND REAL-LIFE CHALLENGES THAT PEOPLE ARE FACING.SIMPLY PUT, “UNSCRIPTED” REVEALS THINGS THE WAY THEY REALLY ARE.
The podcast was born through open, honest and connecting conversations had by educated, funny, intelligent women and mothers, aka creators and hosts Sarah and Renate. The duo began opening up to one another on topics many were finding relatable, but ones that no-one really spoke about. And through these conversations, bonds grew and trust was gained through sharing difficulties, hardships, funny and embarrassing stories, wants, desires and life experiences.
A huge point of difference with “Unscripted’ is that it truly is an uncensored, raw and honest exploration of some of today’s most challenging topics. Real life guests are invited to share their personal experiences, challenges and success stories.
“Unscripted” has an atmosphere of connection, compassion and encouragement. Comic relief is often found around some of the most difficult topics, which makes for a unique viewer experience - whether that means grabbing tissues for tears of joy, true sadness or crying laughter. Topics on “Unscripted” are meaningful, the delivery fresh and uncensored and to put the cherry on top, the humour is elegant and dirty wrapped in one beautiful oxymoron where the f word is as common as vowels, commas and full stops. facebook.com/Unscripted.Realtalk
Star of TVNZ 1 show The Apprentice Aotearoa, knows all too well the importance of mental health, something he has battled for the past two decades. Recently, he has become fully certified as a Rebirthing Breathwork facilitator and life transformation specialist.
Simply put, breathwork refers to any type of breathing exercise or technique and people often perform breathwork exercises to improve their mental, physical or spiritual wellbeing. If you’ve ever been to a yoga glass you would have heard the instructor reminding you to ‘control your breath’. And at its core, this is what breathwork is all about, breathing consciously, with awareness and with intent.
Mike Wilson’s five benefits from daily breathwork
1. Calmed nervous system, allowing for less stress and lower cortisol levels
2. Lowered anxiety as you are brought into the present moment
3. Ability to build your immune system higher
4. Feeling of being grounded and fulfilled
5. Focuses you into your physical body, and out of your head.

It can also be challenges like overeating during lockdown and most importantly, the need to future-proof your health in a densely aging population!

CONTEMPORARY ARTIST, ADVENTURER AND HUMANITARIAN, STUART ROBERTSON’S PASSION FOR SEEING THE WORLD THROUGH AN ALTERNATE VIEW RUNS DEEP.
STUART ROBERTSON
His photographic work has gained momentum internationally photographing the likes of The Dalai Lama, Demi Moore, Ringo Starr, Emily Blunt, Danny DeVito, Daryl Hannah, Brooke Shields, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and more. Robertson has travelled to the highlands of Papua New Guinea, Port au Prince, Soweto, and even Mexican Prisons on this journey.
His artistic practice has developed and been refined over 30 years. Robertson’s artworks now hang in established private collections throughout New Zealand, the USA, Australia, and Europe as his profile continues to gain significant momentum. Artwork is donated to non-profits, charities, and NGOs to sell and retain 100% for their cause and to make a difference.
We spoke with Robertson about his latest project with Gallery 33, Peace in 10,000 Hands. Robertson photographs a single rose, an ancient symbol of peace, in the hands of 10,000 people from every country on the planet.
Described as ‘an evocative and unstoppable global art project creating a visual provocation to challenge and reinvigorate the conversation for peace’, tell us how you came up with the concept for Peace in 10,000 Hands?
My career as an entrepreneur has always focused on creativity. From agency, publishing, entertainment, food - they have all been creative expressions. I was travelling with a camera and prolific when it came to taking photos. Although a creative outlet that fueled my need to produce and be creative, I essentially deemed it futile. I had no why,
no outlet or platform and was not making a difference. I transitioned my thinking to how I could utilise my creative time and practice to make a difference.
When did Peace in 10,000 Hands and Gallery 33 first start working together?
Robertson spoke at a conference that Russ Wilkinson attended some years back and the next morning they had a coffee. Russ was so moved by the project he offered to assist in any way he could. The genuine sincerity he saw in Robertson grew into a relationship of sharing ideas and support and the friendship resulted in two mate’s desire to create a home in Auckland for Peace in 10,000 Hands. Now their home shares the story and the art from the project is all in the fine company of Sally Aberhart, Gallery Manager.
What’s in store for the future of Gallery 33 and Peace in 10,000 Hands?
Gallery 33 will be the first to show the latest collections from the Peace in 10,000 Hands collections - it is the home of the project. We have an open-door policy for anyone who wants to join the space, sit with the artworks, and have a coffee. We have regular events and artists talks for those interested in joining the conversation and viewing the artfor pleasure or for purchase.

THERE HAS BEEN A RESURGENCE OF INTEREST IN THE USE OF MEDICINAL CANNABINOIDS (CBD) AND WHILE THIS SEEMS VERY RECENT, THIS COULDN’T BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH.
Cannabinoids have been used medicinally for nearly 6000 years, initially in China, and then extensively all over the world. It was only in the last century that cannabis became a ‘controlled drug’ and effectively banned from use and in research.
With any hot topic that becomes widespread, there is increasing curiosity around it - what is it? Where do we get it? What are the benefits?
Canna-What?
The biggest misconception around CBD is that people don’t know the difference between CBD and Cannabis. Cannabis (also known as marijuana or weed) comes from the cannabis plant ‘cannabis sativa’ which has nearly 500 compounds including cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). When used, THC in cannabis is carried to the brain through the bloodstream and this is what creates that ‘high’. Meanwhile, CBD is just one of the chemical compounds found in the cannabis sativa plant and unlike THC, is not psychoactive and won’t result in a ‘high’ when used.
The Up-side
CBD has been used extensively for a variety of conditions, such as pain, anxiety and depression, insomnia, migraine, epilepsy, relief of spasms in MS and other conditions, IBS and chronic fatigue.
Conflicts & Criticisms
Studies have shown that users who could benefit from using CBD products often go without as their GP’s refuse to prescribe it. This is mainly due to lack of experience and confidence in prescribing, but also speaks to the larger issue around CBD not being a ‘genuine’ form of medication. NZ-based medicinal cannabis product developer and distributor, Organic Genetics, have faced many challenges and criticism since they started their journey in 2019, but state that it only stems from a place of misinformation and lack of knowledge, “Medicinal cannabis is a very new industry to many and unfortunately there is still a stigma around the cannabis plant. Slowly but surely, this is changing, as we’ve found that more people are beginning to take a real interest and becoming comfortable in sharing their own stories and how it has helped them” noted Holly Wright from Organic Genetics.
But is it...legal?
On April 1, 2020, the Medicinal Cannabis Scheme (MCS) regulations came into force, allowing CBD products to be regulated as prescription medicine, rather than a controlled drug. This has led to the proliferation of CBD products in the market, with many doctors charging hundreds for access to these medicines.
In a now saturated health market, Koru Health stands out amongst the crowd. Founders Dr. Simon Bristow and Dr. Birgit McConnachie are passionate advocates for creating a sustained, healthy lifestyle and supporting treatments that actually work. Dr Simon is passionate about bringing CBD from the USA at affordable prices, despite the tendency for many clinics to add a higher mark-up due to the demand. He encourages anyone in New Zealand to call for a $70 consultation, with the monthly cost greatly reduced in comparison to other clinics and doctors.
Bristow comments, “There has been a resurgence of interest in the use of medicinal Cannabinoids over the last 20 years and this seems as if it’s something new, but this is only new in our lifetime as cannabinoids have been used medicinally for nearly 3000 years, initially in China, and then extensively all over the world.” The team at Koru Health understand the potential benefits CBD can have, being used extensively for a variety of conditions including pain, anxiety and depression, insomnia, migraines, epilepsy, IBS or Chronic fatigue.
What’s in store for the future of CBD?
Many New Zealand clinics have welcomed the change and used the opportunity to research and develop these products. Organic Genetics is just one of these clinics hoping to get funding, recently kicking off their equity crowdfunding raise with PledgeMe to seek $4 million to contribute to the fit-out of their indoor EU GMP cultivation facility. Holly Wright mentions that they are simultaneously working on getting their first EU GMP imported products assessed through the Ministry of Health’s vigorous regime, “We have high hopes of being one of the first companies to provide the patients of Aotearoa access to premium medicinal cannabis products.”
According to Cannabis Clinic, 2022 will likely bring a range of New Zealand-made products into the medicinal space. This includes CBD oils; however, they do not predict that prices will drop as a result. Cannasouth, a science-led company, is focused on developing improved products that aim to increase the bioavailability to improve therapeutic outcomes and further reduce costs to patients. This will allow for New Zealand manufactured products to enter the market rather than just exported products.
This includes Helius Therapeutics, who are focused on medicinal cannabis research, innovation, manufacturing and commercialization. As well as being the country’s largest producer, Helius was New Zealand’s first medicinal cannabis business to gain a GMP License to Manufacture Medicines back in July of this year. Having raised $48 million
in capital since 2018, Helius has invested significantly in its 8,800sqm indoor cannabis cultivation and manufacturing complex in East Auckland. They are focused on developing novel therapeutics which are safe and efficacious, with a highly experienced team to deliver.
“Kiwi patients have long wanted access to both quality and affordable local medicinal cannabis products and their patience is now being rewarded”. Notes Helius Chief Executive Carmen Doran.
The Bottom Line
New Zealand’s entrepreneurial spirit is truly in full display in this industry. With many players coming forward, the research and effectiveness of these products is hard to deny. Thanks to government support and the changing tide of public opinion, Koru Health and others are able to help more and more patients to alleviate pain and other chronic conditions.
CBD was for many years mislabeled as a controlled drug. Now, with its new status in New Zealand, we’re back to the beginning, using medicine that was first used 6000 years ago. Perhaps our ancestors had it right, after all.

AT 31 YEARS OLD, TRAVEL BLOGGER LIZ CARLSON HAD A CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH AND AN APPETITE FOR ADVENTURE.
Since starting her blog, Young Adventuress, over 10 years ago, Liz has been on some extraordinary journeys, yet on Valentine’s Day 2020, she experienced a heart attack that became the motivation to change her life for the better.
That morning, Liz was on her laptop with her morning coffee, getting ready to start her day, when a feeling of total dread washed over her, building into an intense crushing pain across her chest, neck and shoulders down her arms and even into her jaw. Struggling to breathe, Liz eventually collapsed on the floor from the sheer pain of it all, clutching her armpits and curled up in a ball.
“I tried to pass it off as nothing at first, but my partner forced me to go to the hospital,” she says. “I had even experienced something similar twice before and just put it down to stress.”
It wasn’t until some time later, after spending a week in Christchurch Public Hospital because of an abnormal blood test, that Liz found out she had suffered a minor heart attack. Liz had no risk factors or family history of heart disease and a number of further medical tests came back all clear.
“The doctors concluded that it was possible that a migraine medication I’d been prescribed may have been the problem as it narrows blood vessels,” she says.
Since suffering her heart event just one month before the global Covid-19 pandemic, life looks a little different for Liz these days. Instead of running towards airport gates last minute, Liz has made changes in her everyday habits to reduce stress, such as sleeping more, massage therapy and taking control of her life.
“I feel much calmer now as a person and this is in part down to the relaxation I’ve built into my life after my heart event,” she says. “I’ve also set up my own house plant business called Node, which I run from my standing desk at home.”
Besides living a more relaxed lifestyle, Liz now does regular exercise and goes for walks every day in order to meet the physical activity needs of a young person’s body.
“I’m only 33 and I’ve been through a lot, but I’m always curious to know more about myself and to understand what caused my life to almost end. Only then can I learn to manage how I respond to the challenges I encounter.”
Shortly after her own heart experience, Liz’s stepfather sadly passed away from an unexpected heart attack, and she was devastated that she couldn’t attend his funeral in the US due to Covid-19.
“He was like a father to me, and I really want to get the message out that this type of thing can happen to anyone at any moment,” she says. “Only by taking preventative measures with your lifestyle can you take back control.”
Heart disease is New Zealand’s single biggest killer, claiming the lives of more than 6,700 New Zealanders every year – that’s one person every 90 minutes.
Heart attacks can happen to anyone at any time of their life. Warning signs of a heart attack include chest discomfort, excessive sweating, shortness of breath, and nausea. Women can experience other less obvious symptoms including discomfort in the upper back, nausea, sweating, and unusual fatigue.
Acting quickly and dialling 111 saves lives.
The Heart Foundation is New Zealand’s heart charity leading the fight against heart disease and has invested more than $78 million into ground-breaking heart research since 1968. Please visit heartfoundation.org.nz to find out more or heartfoundation.org.nz/donate to contribute to the fight against heart disease.

TO DISCOVER THE BOLLINGER HOUSE IS TO MEET ONE OF THE LAST GREAT CHAMPAGNE FAMILIES.
A family of passionate individuals who have been working for nearly two centuries to create the finest Champagne wines with a unique and legendary taste. That taste is the fruit of a special affinity for the elegance of Pinot Noir, uncompromising excellence, an exceptional vineyard, and artisanal know-how passed on with the utmost care since 1829.
Above all, as Madame Bollinger – whose legendary vitality continues to inspire us – would no doubt have suggested, discovering Bollinger is to share emotions between great taste enthusiasts.
The Bollinger style is inimitable and recognised as such by the great Champagne lovers, the fruit of rigorous methods and a respect for principles handed down from one generation to the next in a great tradition that has always valued experience above all.
This style is characterised by the expression of the fruit’s full palette of aromas in champagnes that are both deep and subtle, and which strike a perfect balance between the intensity of great Pinot Noirs and the freshness of Chardonnays from the Côte des Blancs. Bollinger wines reveal a creamy effervescence resulting from vinification in oak barrels and prolonged yeast contact. It offers a particular tasting experience that remains consistent throughout the years.
This style stems from a solid base, rooted in five tangible principles
1. The House Vineyards
2. Pinot Noir – located in the heart of the Grand Crus of Aÿ from the very beginning, the House of Bollinger built its reputation by glorifying this grape variety
3. Magnums of reserve wines – the keystone of the blend and the perpetuation of the Special Cuvée style, the standard bearer of Champagne Bollinger
4. The Barrels – over 4,000 old barrels that produce mico-oxygenation of the wines, the secret to their excellent ageing capacity
5. Time – all the wines are aged in the cellars two to three times longer than required by the Appellation regulations.
“I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and I drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it unless I’m thirsty.”
INFLUENCED BY THE GREEK STYLE OF COOKING, ALL PROTEINS ARE COOKED ON THE CHAR-GRILL AND WOOD FIRE AND THEN USING THE ABUNDANCE OF NEW ZEALAND CHEESES, HERBS AND FLAVOURS, EACH STUNNING DISH IS BROUGHT TO LIFE AND SERVED WITH EXCELLENCE.
But don’t be fooled, this isn’t a fine dining restaurant. Despite the outstanding food, this ‘local’ has all the comforts for large groups or an early meal after work right through to intimate dining or bespoke events.
There are the usual suspects like Spanakopita, Dolmades and Kataifi prawns plus kiwi classics such as rib-eye, market fish and pork belly but it’s dishes such as the barbequed chicken and the potato skordalia and not to forget the pulled lamb souvlakis that suddenly brings your table to a happy quiet hum.
It’s Greek but not as you know it. It’s like they’ve taken the tradition and the original dishes, and they’ve simplified them and enlarged the flavours, so that every bite is clean yet full-bodied; making each mouthful an experience.
This personal attention to the food is also carried out from the front of house right through to the farewell. The restaurant is softly lit, the music is perfect and very cool, and the furnishings make you feel like you’re in a Hotel that has all the comforts of home. The staff are attentive but as they glide, nothings a problem, it’s almost like a dance. They don’t run but they don’t walk either and your every wish is their command.
You are not left wanting and in fact you’ll probably make this your local after your first experience, as your tastebuds will remind you of all the flavour bursts that made your night so memorable.
And this level of attention and experience doesn’t change for larger groups and events. With a total seating capacity of around 160 and standing 220, Gerome is the perfect location if you’re wanting to impress someone or create an important or magical event. Looking for something exclusive and intimate? Then the upstairs dining room (which can be closed off to the rest of the restaurant for privacy) is the place for you.
Quaint and historical Parnell hosts one of Auckland’s most contemporary restaurants with time-honoured flavours and dishes that anchors their patrons respect and makes them a bustling destination. If you haven’t been there yet then this needs to be on your must-do list, in fact it’s the perfect place for a great strong coffee and loukoumades (Greek donut) or your next celebration or key event.

Since its inaugural release, every vintage of Yalumba The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz has been dedicated to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the culture and traditions of Yalumba – the Signatory. “The 47th release of The Signature is as meaningful now as it was in 1966 when we released the inaugural 1962”, said Fifth-generation proprietor Robert Hill-Smith.
“We could not have anticipated how entrenched this wine would become in the culture and lives of every person passing through the gates at Yalumba”.
The 2016 Signatory was bestowed to Yalumba’s Head of Winemaking, Louisa Rose. Named Australian Winemaker of the Year in 2008 by ‘Gourmet Traveller Wine’, Louisa has built a reputation with white wine, especially Riesling and Viognier from the Eden Valley vineyards.
As a celebrated champion of these varietals across the wine world, Louisa grew up in Melbourne, spending her weekends in the Yarra Valley helping on the family vineyard. She worked the 1992 vintage as a cellar hand at Yalumba and 28 years later, Louise has worked alongside many legends of Yalumba, being involved in almost ever facet of viticulture, winemaking, and management, which led her to accepting the role of chief winemaker, which she quietly stepped into in 2006.
“This is an incredible honour,” said Rose. “The Signature is a wine that means so much to everyone associated with Yalumba, not just because we love to drink it, but because of the personal connection that each vintage has with someone we know and love. So many of the previous Signatories have been my mentors and idols. I can’t quite
believe that I’m to become part of that group”.
Particular focuses for Louisa have been the developmental work with Viognier and other alternative varieties, sustainability and the use of natural (wild or feral) yeast and bacteria to make the wines. Under Louisa’s stewardship all Yalumba wines, from vintage 2012, are made without the use of animal based fining agents – making them ‘vegan’ wines.
The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz 2016 is a very deep, dense red in colour. With aromas of red currants, perfumed cedar, and complex, savoury dried herbs the Cabernet Shiraz blend shows precise aromatics and is classically rich through the middle palate with exotic florals, cranberry complexity, and dark chocolate.

Each year The Signature is named after an individual to honour their contribution to Yalumba. Who will be the next Signatory? And will the vintage be worthy of their name? Only time will tell.

100% Pure Organic New Zealand Manuka Honey drizzled over light, golden doughnuts with a sprinkling of chopped walnuts it is the perfect any day special treat.
Loukoumades are so easy to make, they are gluten-free, dairy-free with no added sugar and the glorious golden Manuka TranzAlpine honey is also organic and GMO-free. Make sure to double the recipe because everyone will be coming back for more.
(Greek Doughnuts with honey and walnuts)
Ingredients:
24 small doughnuts
1 cup rice flour
1 cup buckwheat flour
1/2 cup corn flour (corn starch)
2 teaspoons psyllium husk
1 teaspoon salt
1 sachet instant yeast (8g)
1 Tbs TranzAlpine organic Manuka honey
240 ml tepid water
1,5 L oil for deep frying (rice bran oil, canola oil, grape seed oil)
To serve:
1/2 cup TranzAlpine organic Manuka honey, warm
2 Tbs chopped toasted walnuts pinch of cinnamon powder
Method:
Combine water, honey and yeast in a mixing bowl. Mix well using a whisk. Let it stand until foam appears on the surface, that will take 5-10 min.
Combine rice flour, buckwheat flour, corn flour, psyllium husk and salt in a big bowl, make a well in the centre.
Add the yeast mixture, and mix until the dough forms. Add another tablespoon of water during the kneading process if the dough is too dry.
Place the dough in the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour (depends on the temperature in your kitchen).
Knock back the dough, and using a dough scraper or a chef’s knife divide it into 3 equal pieces. Form each piece into a log, then divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece in a ball, then place on a baking paper lined sheet, leaving about 5cm between each ball. Drape a piece of plastic wrap over the baking sheet (do not seal tightly). Let the dough rise until doubled, about 30 minutes - 1 hour.
Pour cooking oil into 3L capacity saucepan to deep fry the loukoumades. Place a kitchen thermometer on the side of the saucepan. Heat the oil on a medium heat until 160C.
Dip a tablespoon in some oil, shake it a bit to remove any excess. It is best
*Gluten-free, dairy-free recipe
to dip the spoon in oil and not water. Using the spoon, grab the dough ball off your hand and let it drop in the hot oil carefully.
Repeat this procedure until the surface of the pan is comfortably filled. Stir your loukoumades around with a slotted spoon for several minutes until they are golden brown all over.
When done, transfer to a paper towel lined plate or bowl and repeat until all the dough has been used.
Then serve on a platter, drizzle with the honey and sprinkle with cinnamon and chopped walnuts.

THIS 1990S APARTMENT IN AUCKLAND’S MISSION BAY HAS UNDERGONE AN EXTENSIVE RENOVATION COMBINING THE INFLUENCES OF TWO CULTURES.
With a strong focus on showcasing the owner’s antique furniture in this stunning beachfront property, careful detail of Japanese heritage has also been added as well.
High-class fittings have been used with a minimal colour palette throughout, and consideration has been given not only to the cultural perspective but to two distinct personalities.
The entire apartment has been gutted and brought back to modern standards, right down to the door, hardware and light switches.
The latest Miele 7000 Series appliances have been used in this Mal Corboy kitchen - an award winning international designer who has become a brand name in New Zealand.
Porcelanosa Spanish tiles have been used on both the kitchen and bathroom floors, and the colour palette in both areas are deliberately contrasted to create some consistency and continuity throughout the apartment.
It’s all very regal and formal in the dining room, with large brass candle holders taking pride of place on the large oak table, while a beautiful kimono softly accentuates the wall in the hallway.
The couple has separate private areas for their own leisure - and a translucent shoji screen made from rice paper glass creates a natural division between the dining area and hallway.
The client required a relaxed yet formal lounge area for him to relax and unwind, whilst his younger wife has a screen-free area with her own personal effects.
Misia room darkening window curtains further enhance the lounging experience for this couple, also bringing in a lovely Japanese influence into the main space.

WE SAT DOWN WITH CREATIVE POWERHOUSE
SONIA McMANUS ABOUT HER LATEST COLLECTION.
How did Sonia Therese Design come to be?
Working around the world as an engineering geologist, my life was forever changed experiencing the Christchurch earthquakes. As an indigenous designer (my whakapapa is Ngai Tahu) I believe in finding meaning. I started making jewellery from eco-friendly recycled or reusable materials from bio-resin, salvaged metal and timber reclaimed from post-earthquake Christchurch.
Why is sustainability important?
Sustainability and the concept of KAITIAKITANGA is fundamental. It’s about understanding that we are not owners of this land, or the ocean, the lakes and rivers or the air around us.
Explain your passion for sand?
I have launched a special collection called Tūrangawaewae – My Place, using a new sustainable material for casting molten metal into sand. I invite people to send me sand/soil from the place that is closest to their heart, their Tūrangawaewae. I am making rings and charms (for bracelets, necklaces, and earrings). It’s an organic and spiritual process – every piece is unique.
What are your career highlights?
It was an honour to attend New York Fashion Week twice, and being asked to showcase at New Zealand Fashion Week’s inaugural Sustainability Show 2021 (postponed).

Everyone seems to be talking about trading these days, with our young generation feeling that working full time isn’t going to make them richer. But for a novice, it’s difficult to comprehend where to begin with trading. We sat down with the team from Tiger Brokers to get clued in.
Who are Tiger Brokers? How did they get started?
Tiger Brokers (NZ) Limited is a NZ-based participant in global capital market. Targeted towards the younger generation, their self-developed Tiger Trade app is seamless, easy-touse and enables a multi-asset mobile trading platform.
Why should I be investing?
The answer is very simple, and comes down to three key points. Firstly, to create wealth - most investment vehicles such as stocks, certificates of deposit, or bonds, offer returns on your money long term. Next, is to accomplish financial goals – investing can help you reach bigger financial goals. and finally, to gain financial independence – your investment enables you to be independent and not rely on others.
What do I need to know before investing?
We always go with the quote ‘before you invest, invest a little time’, meaning that whether you are a novice or a seasoned trader, you can use our Tiger Trade app. This is an easy-to-use tool and offers a range of learning resources that can help you to stay on top of your wealth journey.

The mission at Donna Doolittle’s Animal Rescue in Kaitaia is to be the voice for those that can’t speak. The unwanted, stray and/or abused animals. Donna Doolittle’s Animal Rescue became a registered non-profit charity in 2018, helping to provide a safe, free-from-harm haven with the support of volunteers, local and the wider community, through fundraisers, donations and sponsorship. Animal rescue is a 24/7 activity that Donna runs alongside working full time as Head Nurse at Phoenix Animal Wellness in Kerikeri.
Donna decided to open up her home to the communities abused, neglected, abandoned and sick animals. Providing them with a safe environment, love, nutrition and veterinary care. As a Veterinary Nurse in Kaitaia at the time, Donna saw an increase in cases of animals being inhumanely disposed of. The supportive team of nurses and veterinarians help Donna Doolittle to achieve her everyday goal of providing animal welfare service.
All the animals become available for adoption once they have been vaccinated, desexed, microchipped and received further veterinary care as needed. Each year they
have successfully placed hundreds of animals into adoptive homes throughout New Zealand. Each new family has to go through a stringent adoption process to be allowed to adopt one of the animals. The end goal for Donna is to find a forever loving home for the animals where they will receive unconditional love and kindness.

Bringing together contrasting perspectives in a celebration of the season’s exploration of fluidity and the power of individuality - this is what the Burberry Autumn/Winter campaign is all about.
Playing on the concept of duality, the campaign contrasts raw, classical studio stills, captured by photographers Mert and marcus, with bold candid shots. The Autumn/ Winter collections by Riccardo Tisci explore the narrative of modern femininity and masculinity, re-writing the narrative with a sense of boldness and opportunity. Paying homage to the indomitable force of Mother Nature and the widespread British craft and outdoor movements of the early 20th Century, the collections nod to those who daringly ventured into nature, breaking with convention in their journey towards building a better future. burberry.com

Reuben Paterson, Guide Kaiārahi, 2021. Commissioned by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, owned and generously supported by the Edmiston Trust. Photography by Hamish Melville.
Earlier this year, Reuben Paterson’s Guide Kaiārahi was revealed at Auckland Art Gallery, a magnificent 10-metre-high waka made of 595 iridescent crystals. Commissioned by Auckland Art Gallery and Edmiston Trust, the much-anticipated major sculpture rises vertically like a needle out of the Gallery’s forecourt pool and casts a galaxy of stars over the Gallery walls. Paterson’s inspiration for the crystalline sculpture originated in the well-known legend of a phantom waka that ominously appeared at Lake Tarawera 10 days before the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886.

“It is given to a fortunate few to be born at the right time, in the right place, with the right talents. In recent fashion there are three: Chanel, Dior and Mary Quant.” – Ernestine Carter
An international exhibition exploring the work of legendary fashion designer Mary Quant is set to open at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki this summer. Here from the V&A in London, Mary Quant takes a look at the fashion icon who harnessed the youthful spirit of the sixties and embraced new mass production techniques to create a new look for modern women.
Auckland Art Gallery Director Kirsten Lacy is excited to share the fashion revolutionary and youthquake of the 1960s with New Zealanders through an exhibition that cleverly explores Quant’s transformative effect on the fashion scene.
‘Mary Quant was all about revolution. She dressed the liberated woman with her fun, youthful and creative designs. Quant made designer fashion affordable for working women, overturning the dominance of luxury couture from Paris,’ says Lacy. aucklandartgallery.com
