EYE AUTUMN 2016

Editor’s Letter

F

or me, Autumn has always signified change. This has never rung truer for us at Eye, with so much to look forward to in the upcoming months. May heralds our HSBC Premier High Tea at the Langham, an event I’ve been looking forward to all year. The day will start off with a flute of champagne and be filled with fashion, high tea and of course, shopping! This year is going to be exciting for Eye with the launch of our brand new magazine, Chinese Eye, in Spring. This luxury publication will be 100% Mandarin and is already proving popular. I cannot wait to showcase all things New Zealand to the Chinese market. We’re so thrilled to have New Zealand’s own taylor on our cover. I have long admired Vicki Taylor’s aesthetic design and her new concept store, The Shelter, is already proving to be a Ponsonby favourite. Many brands have turned to mass production as a way of surviving in the ever-changing fashion industry. Vicki’s dedication to New Zealand design and manufacture is why taylor has such a loyal customer base. With Summer over, I have been seeking dining that truly warms the soul. A favourite of mine is Takapuna’s Artwok. The beautiful Chinese cuisine never fails and to top it off, all dishes use free-range and locally sourced produce. Paired with a glass of New Zealand pinot noir, it’s the perfect night out. The tones of Autumn have also been inspiring my makeup shades lately. Luckily, I have my Art Deco Palette by my side, ensuring my makeup is on point throughout the night, More and more, I am seeking ways to make my beauty routine quicker without sacrificing effectiveness. Having always loved the Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream, famously developed by the woman herself, there was no question that I had to try the new Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream All-Over Miracle Oil. Between the Autumn wind and office air-conditioning, looking after my skin is of utmost importance. This oil is perfect for my handbag and a simple solution to carry with me at all times. Not to mention that the citrus floral fragrance is divine! While all the changes have been keeping me busy, it is still important to strike that delicate balance between work and personal well-being. A simple fruit drink is never far from my side, boosting my health and keeping me energised all day long. From all of us here at Eye, embrace the changes Autumn brings and remember to take the time to relax and look after your personal well-being.

we planted vines, which grew into a family tree. Samuel Smith planted Yalumba’s first vines in 1849 and wine has been an integral part of his family ever since. Five generations of Samuel’s descendants have lived and breathed the business, which is today the oldest family-owned winery in Australia. A lot has changed in 165 years. The winery has grown substantially and there are a lot more people around. But one thing that will never change is the family atmosphere. Whether they have Smith in their last name or not, every single person who works at Yalumba is part of the family. Because everyone is here for the same reason, for the love of wine.

Editor’s Pick VANESSA GREEN SHARES HER FAVOURITE BEAUTY PRODUCT!

A

s the editor and publisher of Multi Media Magazines, I tend to be a bit of a workaholic. Everywhere I go and everyone I meet, are opportunities to form and build professional relationships with. This requires me to look my best at all times. However as many may find being a workaholic can take its toll on your skin. Finding a product that suited my busy time schedule while improving the appearance of my skin in photographs and in person took time. When I came across La Prairie Cellular Radiance Perfecting Fluid, I wished that I had found it sooner! My skin naturally not only looks amazing in person and in photographs, it feels so much healthier. Knowing that I can walk out the door after applying one or two drops of La Prairie Cellular Radiance Perfecting Fluid, and then quickly smacking on one of my favourite lippies and a bit of mascara is an absolute time saver and confidence booster. I no longer have to worry about getting foundation on my clothes or accessories, or wonder if it looks odd in natural lighting than it did when I applied it under the superficial lighting within my household. That being said, when I did apply foundation, I noticed a huge difference on how it looked on my skin, the foundation was smoother to apply and the fine lines that usually appear after my foundation sets in, weren’t there! I was so amazed by the quality of this product and improvement in my skin that I did a little research to see what the benefits were of La Prairie’s Cellular Radiance Perfecting Fluid, to help understand why my skin was (and still is) feeling better than it has in years! According to their website laprairie.com, this gold-infused serum consist of a potent age defying technology, which alters reflective properties of skin instantly, giving the skin a subtle glow. Cellular Radiance perfecting fluid also improves the elasticity of skin, fills wrinkles within an hour of application eventually fading those fine lines and wrinkles. The confidence I have gained from the improvement of my skin from the use of this product is amazing. I could not recommend La Prairie’s Cellular Radiance Perfecting Fluid enough, my skin looks great, feels great and best of all I feel great.

Love is like a Fragrance ...THAT LINGERS ON

T

his issue Eye sat down with Christina Fairhurst of Revlon to learn a little more about their newest release, ‘Love Is On’. A favourite in the Eye office at the moment, we wanted to find about in the inspiration behind it and about the Revlon girl herself. How do you find a perfume that you really love? It can be difficult choosing between the numerous bottles or do you have a secret to narrowing down the options? My advice would be to spend time at the fragrance counter with a trained fragrance consultant to find one that is right for you and think about fragrance wardrobing – meaning different fragrances for different occasions in your life. For example, an elegant fragrance for your work life, a light fragrance for your leisure life and a super gorgeous, sexy fragrance for your social life. Fragrance brings memories along with us throughout our life’s journey …I still wear a fragrance that my father bought for me when I was 16 – and every time I wear it I think of him, and how special and ‘unexpected’ his beautiful gift was to me at a time in my life when I was crossing that bridge from girl-hood to woman-hood. What’s the concept behind your newest ‘Love Is On’ fragrance? Revlon has a strong heritage in Fragrance and our ‘provocative DNA’ began with ‘Charlie’. Revlon fragrances have always been synonymous with love, attraction and desire. The Revlon Love is On fragrance is the scent of attraction that is made for women…but loved by men! There is a saying: “Love is like a fragrance that lingers on.” - Kim Casali, Artist. This fragrance is designed to spark the chemistry between two people.

26

Christ

hur s t

It is a seductive blend of masculine and feminine notes that ignites attraction and inspires love. The packaging embodies the very shape of love – with its exclusive heart shaped bottle that projects passion with a rich, red glow. How much should one expect to spend on a really great, lasting perfume? LOVE IS ON is amazing value! Yes it is amazing value. It is a ‘life-style’ fragrance priced and designed to be worn and enjoyed everyday. Revlon lead the market in lifestyle fragrances when Charles Revson launched Charlie in 1973. It’s launch ensured that women were able to purchase a great fragrance an affordable price. From this launch we now see a whole new category

in fragrance…the ‘lifestyle category’ – fragrances all priced for affordability. Interesting fact… Fragrance makes the skin ‘sun sensitive’ – and as we mature, we see brown marks appear on our necks where we have sprayed our fragrances over the years. Lastly, what beauty essential can’t you leave the house without? My Revlon Mascara – I’m loving the Ultimate All-in-One Mascara at the moment – but occasionally wear the Revlon Dramatic Definition Mascara. Like most women – it is my ‘must-wear’ cosmetic product every day! I wouldn’t leave the house without it!

THE HEART FOUNDATION Q&A WITH

Jaquie Brown

J

aquie Brown will MC High Tea with the Langham on 20th May, an afternoon of racing and fashion, while raising much-needed funds for ‘Go Red for Women’. Heart disease is the single biggest killer of women in New Zealand, yet most women don’t know this. ‘Go Red for Women’ is the Heart Foundation’s annual awareness campaign that works to educate women on positive lifestyle choices to avoid the risk of heart disease.

where I’d get that from. Genuinely, it was a surprise to find out that eight women a day - that’s over 50 a week – die of heart disease in New Zealand. I have a friend that lives with this daily and to see first-hand what she goes through compelled me to help. The Heart Foundation has donated more than $55m toward heart health research since it began, which has a direct impact on saving lives. I think that’s really great.

Why have you decided to support the Heart Foundation? I had no idea that cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women in New Zealand. I really thought it would be cancer or stress from kids not eating their dinners, or hiding in cupboards for too long to escape their kids... Not sure

Foundation this year? We all love a good high tea and as May is High Tea season (I love them all year round) to support ‘Go Red for Women’ this year, I’m MCing a glamourous, racing-themed High Tea at the Langham on Friday, 20th May. The Heart Foundation is also hosting its

How are you helping the Heart

own healthy high tea at The Pullman on Sunday, 29th May with key note speaker, Annabel Langbein, talking about her own heart healthy menus and passion for being New Zealand’s most famous free range cook. I LOVE Annabel Langbein, so if I do a good job on the 20th they’ll let me go to that one as well. This time as a guest though. How do you ensure you and your family eat healthy food? I try and be as creative as possible (when I have the energy, come on let’s be honest!) I read recipes online and try and be crafty. I hide vegetables and lentils in most things. I’m yet to master the art of getting them into chocolate cake, but I’m working on it.

Jimmy Choo

IT ALL MAKES SCENTS

J

immy Choo has long been synonymous with bespoke shoes, luxury accessories and as an unsurpassed expert in the art of dressing; when you drink in the notes of one of their perfumes, it all makes scents. Designing fragrances has always been seen as the final step in fully accessorising the ultimate Jimmy Choo woman. In 2011 the brand first explored creating a signature scent to express an aura of beauty and strength. First off the shelf is Jimmy Choo, the First Fragrance. Spritzing yourself evokes sensations of elegant empowerment from its melody of toffee and patchouli notes. And encased in a Venetian Murano glass inspired bottle it is suggestive of the iconic Jimmy Choo stiletto, marrying tradition with the new. Jimmy Choo Eau de Toilette is a chameleon perfume, with its medley of floral tones aboard a woody base presenting you with a scent that can be worn anywhere, anytime. Sheathed in a mirror-like glass bottle it elicits a “must-have” quality; you want to touch it, own it, wear it. Spritzing yourself imbues an aura of powerful glamour, to go fourth with no doubt as to your own same effect on the world. Said to dance on the skin like blossom in the breeze, the Jimmy Choo Blossom fragrance truly inspires the wearer to bloom. As the notes unfurl in the senses, it’s like petals opening in a fresh and fruity feel of poise. The alluring aroma sparks you with a frisson of anticipation of the night to come. Meet the latest addition in Jimmy Choo ILLICIT. Punchy and provocative, ILLICIT is a hypnotic and innately feminine floriental fragrance. It rouses the senses like taking a bite of the forbidden fruit, forefront with an undercurrent of sweetness. You sincerely feel eyes on you as observers come under its spell - it ignites attention. You feel sensationally sassy, the ginger flirts mingled with honey-amber accords giving you the mettle to take centre stage and own it. And never one to discriminate, rock’n’roll rebellion meets stylistic charm in the inaugural men’s fragrance, Jimmy Choo MAN. Spraying the significant other in a mist of the masculine musk leads every whiff of him enveloping oneself in a state of stupefaction. Jimmy Choo perfumes are more than just about diffusing a sensational scent; they arise your inner persona and engender your buried aplomb.

taylor SEEKING THE DESIGNS OF TOMORROW

W

hen contemplating New Zealand’s leading fashion brands, Auckland’s own taylor immediately comes to mind. taylor pushes the line of individual creativity and experimentation - while still ensuring garments are effortless and wearable. taylor is a testament to these ideals with clothes that represent individuality and are completely designed and manufactured here in New Zealand. Throughout the last 17 years, taylor has spread across the country, boasting stores in Britomart and Newmarket, as well as Wellington and Christchurch stores. The woman behind the boutique fashion store, Vicki Taylor, ensures the pieces are limited edition rather than mass produced and made with quality fabrics. Vicki was born into a family well-versed in the fashion industry. As such, a career in fashion design was a natural progression, where she studied and worked in Australia before moving back to New Zealand. In 1999, Vicki established her own label, taylor, alongside her husband, Mark Thomson. The clothing is inspired by European and Japanese fabrics and textures. Frequent trips allow her to source high-quality material that can carry the impeccable tailoring that had come to be expected from taylor. The attention to detail on each piece is evident as is the touch of modernity to classic designs. The latest collection, [IN] Complete, pushes the line between art and fashion to produce pieces inspired by experimentation and creativity...

37

[IN] COMPLETE At what point are things defined as complete or incomplete? When do minor amendments become major changes? It was questions such as these that inspired taylor’s latest collection, [IN] Complete. Vicki draws on the beauty of imperfection within an unfinished artwork to create unique shapes and forms. These shapes within the unfinished artwork are merged with the design aesthetic of taylor’s garments. The signature linear and structured nature of taylor garments is complemented with sculptured, flared shapes, producing a unique take on negative space. Rawness and incomplete elements are evident in each piece while a timelessness is still central to the collection. Elements that would seemingly clash appear almost perfect in the way they complement each other. Cashmere blended wools and delicate silks, create an almost unbalanced textural experience, while fluidity is juxtaposed with structure. The delicate shapes in the collection stand out against a tough background and dark colour palette, which, in turn, is offset with fresh white, cream and beige tones. [IN] Complete showcases Vicki’s continued endeavour to push the fashion envelope. After securing a solid presence in New Zealand’s fashion boutique market, Vicki continued to explore new opportunities. One such vision is The Shelter, a concept that came into fruition in August, 2014.

38

THE SHELTER CAFE AND STORE A recently established concept store, The Shelter is housed in a newly refurbished industrial warehouse in Auckland’s Ponsonby. The Shelter has received two interior design awards, including the much sought-after New Zealand Architecture Retail Interior Award for 2015. It includes a cafe, contributing to the relaxed and effortless ambiance. The food and beverages have been carefully chosen and presented, much like the brands available in store. They include a variety of options from Catroux, Six Barrel Soda Co. and eighthirty coffee. The menu includes gluten free, sugar free and dairy free options, ensuring there is something to suit everyone’s tastes. By combining food, fashion and lifestyle essentials, The Shelter brings together the designled needs of the modern shopper. But who is The Shelter shopper? Vicki describes this individual as one who is constantly seeking new and innovative designs. “The Shelter shopper is intellectual and appreciates

beautifully designed things. She or he wants to discover new brands, and doesn’t necessarily want everyone to know where they’ve shopped,” explains Vicki. “They seek out the young designers of tomorrow.” This is taylor’s aesthetic in a nutshell - the future of design in New Zealand, today. Through immense attention to detail, each piece stands out in its own way, as does its wearer. The garments are creative without sacrificing wearability. The Shelter reflects this detailorientated nature of Vicki’s designs, while continuing to bring an individual flair to the food, decor and overall atmosphere of the store. It incorporates the needs of the modern shopper in a unique setting. With dedicated base of customers that taylor has acquired over the last 17 years, it is expected that The Shelter will build on the base, proving to be a popular addition to Ponsonby’s shopping district.

Joining Forces Friendship + Fashion ALYSHA BROWN AND SAMUEL LEVI

A

high paced life often calls upon more than heels and Havianas. From the office to a photo shoot, the balance of comfort and style in footwear can be a daunting process at best. Alysha Brown and Samuel Levi have joined forces with Jack Purcell, Converse, and their ongoing collaboration with Missoni. As one of New Zealand’s leading influences, Samuel Levi has fast made an impact on the social and style scene. Therefore, it is a given that Levi keeps up to play with the latest trends and set his own for his growing following to emulate. It was at NZ Fashion Week last year that Levi and reality star Alysha Brown first linked up. Fitting that it be at NZ’s most iconic display of fashion. From here the two have been inseparable. Judging from their personalities, it seems quick wit and their infectious sense of humour are what drives these two together. Appearing at a number of premieres and launches as a duo, the pair ensures they find time in their schedules for one another. Perhaps an unlikely friendship, but one that appears to exist on a foundation for the love of style and the critiquing of one another, as best friends do. With a schedule that can see a rapid change from activewear to a suit and tie within minutes, a pauper to prince transformation can happen at the drop of a hat. Every Prince needs his princess. This process, however, may take a little longer. Perhaps in the drop of half a dozen hats.

Although these two have yet to come to an agreement on who is the most high maintenance. Career, relationships, family, travel, workouts and PR. At times, this is an act of its own to balance. Both Brown and Levi agree that no matter the schedule a presence in each other’s life is essential. Whether it’s coffee or canapés, both have learnt that comfort at any event or meet up is a must for any style. Chucks and a leather dress may not seem particularly conventional for most. As Converse continue their collaboration with Missoni, what appears to be an awkward pairing of styles is made possible through a blend of street comfort and upmarket design. Missoni, a high-end Italian fashion brand known for their colorful zigzag motifs, stripes and slub yarns in a patchwork of geometric and floral jacquard. This season, was inspired by the iconic “flames” print from their 80s archive. Upgraded details to the collection include a terracotta tongue label, Chuck patch and heel tab. Alternatively, with Nike Zoom Air Technology on an OrthoLite footbed for maximum comfort, the Converse Jack Purcell is perfect for all day wear. The Converse Jack Purcell Signature CVO re-introduces a classic Converse silhouette by replacing the traditional double toecap with a clean silhouette originated by Converse with the Windjammer in the 1960’s. Two very unique styles of shoes for two arguable unique NZ personalities.

TORY & KO Jewellers A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND

T

hey say, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”. Most women would agree as they indulge in the elegance, sophistication and glamour when wearing beautifully presented diamonds. For Victoria and Kirstin of TORY & KO, the saying has a much deeper meaning; TORY & KO is founded on a passion that brings beautifully designed jewellery to women of all ages and lifestyles. Kirstin and Victoria’s backgrounds in gemology and business complement each other and like their jewellery their business sparkles. Seeking the assurance of satisfaction when it comes to acquiring exquisite and unique customised design for that special occasion can be daunting, which is why TORY & KO were the choice for Her Royal Highness, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton. Selected prior to the 2014 Royal Tour of New Zealand were four exquisite items: two pairs of earrings from TORY & KO’s “Pretty Collection” and a pair of cultured pearl and diamond earrings with a matching necklace from the “Bespoke Collection”. Desire and admiration for TORY & KO’s collections

42

have given rise to many satisfied clientele. TORY & KO jewellery has graced events nationally and internationally; events such as New York and New Zealand fashion week, an international ballet competition, the 2013 Oscars and Baftas as well as other high end and charity events. Their jewellery has also been worn by actresses Evangeline Lilly, Rachel Weisz and Robin Tunney. Whilst jewellery at TORY & KO is fitting for movie stars and royalty, Victoria and Kirstin reaffirm their passion for designing jewellery to satisfy women of all ages and lifestyles. The story behind the two ladies’ ongoing success as business partners is one to admire. Kirstin grew up among a family of jewellers, developing her appreciation for jewellery at a young age. Her passion led her to study at Canterbury University, whilst also working at Stewart Dawson’s Jewellers. Kirstin naturally developed a strong understanding for the jewellery marketplace and business development, due to her previous roles representing national and international wine brands. However, it was Kirstin’s desire to create a jewellery business

Victoria and Kirstin

that embodied elegance and integrity that led to a discussion with the knowledgeable Victoria. Victoria grew up with a love for fashion and jewellery too and with her talent in design she was bound for success. Victoria’s passion led to study at the Gemologist Institute of America, where she became a qualified gemologist. She later founded her own successful jewellery store of ten years as both the jeweller and designer, where she met her client Kirstin, who shared her understanding of jewellery and business. The two mothers exchanged ideas and TORY & KO was born. Their business venture later led to Kirstin gaining her GIA papers in diamonds and coloured gemstones, and allowed Victoria to continue her work as a highly esteemed jewellery designer and jeweller. The struggles of keeping a young business afloat are known to Kirstin and Victoria. From ensuring their families are healthy and happy at home, caring for sick children around business hours, to working through nights when the business demanded. The passion and experience that these two hold allows them

to relate to their clientele. However, it is the love of their job, positivity and dedication to exceeding clientele expectations that outshines other NZ jewellers. Their glamorous boutique in the Old Bank Arcade is a special place where clients can consult with the jewellers, look at diamonds and gemstones specifically ordered in for their pieces and privately discuss the designs of “secret” engagement rings. Their reputation as diamond specialists who only use the finest of materials within TORY & KO’s collections is also what makes them a cut above the rest. As mothers, Kirstin and Victoria feel strongly about helping to create a better world for children. They are involved with children’s charities around New Zealand. The two have raised money by selling crystal bracelets, where 100% of the proceeds go to the Wellington Ronald McDonald House. Each year during the Christmas period, the ladies co-ordinate new presents for children in refuge through Women’s Refuge NZ, alongside participating in Neo-Natal Trust’s Charity Auctions contributing pearl bracelets and pearl charms.

43

TORY & KO collections are all exquisite, sophisticated and glamorous, yet each collection design is unique. To name a few, the “Pretty Collection” is oh so pretty - set with finest diamonds, gemstones and pearls, this collection features bows, birds, butterflies, hearts and kisses. Each handcrafted piece will have you feeling like a princess. In comparison the “Stella Collection” was designed for lovers of a contemporary look. “Stella” features motifs of stars, constellations and inverted midnight sapphires. If you love to make a statement then the “Stella Collection” will have you catching people’s eye night and day! TORY & KO are also renowned for their service with bespoke jewellery, where they can design your diamond engagement ring or re-design existing jewellery into new pieces. Kirstin and Victoria take pride in all aspects of TORY & KO - making their clients’ experience memorable and the jewellery so much more meaningful. TORY & KO’s jewellery boutique is the result of hard work, sleepless nights, passion and dedication. While having the Duchess of Cambridge select TORY & KO jewellery would have boosted the business’s clientele on an international scale, it’s the ladies’ humble beginnings and ability to form close relationships with their clients that has kept TORY & KO’s success flowing two years on from the royal visit. Victoria and Kirstin’s success however is far from over. TORY & KO have an exciting future commission, which will be revealed later this year. We can’t wait to see their next chapter of success unfold.

TV Shopping Network CHANGING THE WAY NEW ZEALANDERS SHOP

S

hop till you drop. It’s a phrase that many take literally, but just because our bodies are tired from a “hard day’s work” doesn’t mean we have to stop - shopping that is. Introducing TVSN, the 24-hour shopping network where you can shop from the comfort your own home. TVSN, short for Television Shopping Network has buyers travel the world in search of emerging trends, brands and exclusive, quality assured products which are then presented live on both NZ television channels, Freeview 20 and Sky 27. Here at Eye, we decided to experience this shopping phenomena first hand. Coffee out, pajamas on and feet up, we flicked our television and got stuck in. At first it seemed as if we were watching infomercials, however ten minutes later and we were all chuckling away at that T.V. as if we were in on the joke the presenter or guest speaker may have said. Laughter aside, the presentations of

50

the products were remarkable, the usual highly detailed explanations about the product, where it came from, why it was made and how to use it, were all well executed and clearly explained - however what made the presentations remarkable was the presenter’s, they explained and demonstrated products in a manner that is almost like you’re having a conversation with close family - highly informative while also genuinely interested and influenced by the item they were presenting. It was refreshing, entertaining and left us feeling a level of trust towards the opinions of the presenters and guest’s speakers. In fact, shopping with TVSN via television couldn’t have been made easier. An information box featured on the side of the television screen allowed us to run backwards and forwards while still learning the key features of the product. The information within this box included the product code, the name and brand, colours/sizes available, price of the

product, if partial payments are available and what those partial payments are. It also held the Customer Care number, for those who wanted to call and order or ask questions about the product during the duration of the presentation. Being provided with all this information gave us the confidence to call TVSN’s Customer Care number to ask questions we had about products that had caught our eye, and their responses were just what we’d hoped for, friendly, professional and best of all they answered our questions! To our excitement, our ‘hard day’s work’ of shopping, had not ended there - we still had TVSN’s online shopping, to experience. The website is simple, yet proved to be as enjoyable of an experience as the TVSN’s show was. It offered a range of over 8000 products from a large variety of categories including: Beauty, Health, Fashion, Jewellery, Electrical and Kitchen. Each category holds an exciting range of

both renowned and exclusive brands to TVSN, some of the product brands include; Bose Stereo Systems and accessories, experience sound like you’re hearing for the first time; Nikon cameras, which lets you capture those precious moments forever; Kitchen Aid, change your kitchen for the greater good; and OPI – treat yourself to the nail product of professionals. Other exclusive brands and products available from TVSN include Alpha H, Body blade, luxurious silk kaftans and a range of extravagant diamond jewellery pieces. For some of us less experienced in online shopping, the whole process seemed a bit daunting, questions or concerns rush through our heads, causing hesitancy towards taking that final step and clicking purchase. TVSN however has gone over and above, ensuring customers are comfortable with their purchases through providing information across multiple access points such as; videos and web-clips of information, well informed product descriptions, frequently asked questions and of course TVSN 24hr customer care policy where you can ring at anytime or, click on the hot pink “live chat” icon and ask away. Part of the experience we look for when physically shopping in boutique like stores, are information rich ones. This experience allows us to learn about the history of the products and brands so we know exactly what we are buying. TVSN, provides the same experience online, through the option to view up to 7 days of playback - meaning if you’d missed a show presenting a certain product that you wanted to learn more of the history, cause, ingredients and/or other information, all you’d have to do was visit tvsn.co.nz. TVSN take pride in the products they

select and present to their customers, so alongside providing valuable information, they also offer a 30-day money back guarantee. This gave us that extra push of confidence in purchasing online or via TV, knowing that if it wasn’t what we expected or wanted we could get a refund - making the experience less daunting and a whole lot more fun. No tricks. TVSN’s purchase and payment methods were extremely straightforward and easy to follow. In fact, we were told of two different payment options, the first is where you can order online while enjoying the freedom to shop whenever, wherever. The second is through calling TVSN’s friendly Customer Care team who can answer any questions you may have about the product and can place your order, their services are available to you 24/7 on 0800 101 301. TVSN explains all purchasing information thoroughly, no tricks or hidden costs. Additionally, if two or more items are ordered at the same time, you’ll receive a 50% discount on the postage and handling charges of each item - we jumped in on this! The most exciting part of shopping with TVSN however has got to be receiving the parcel. We received our parcel within 5 days of purchasing it, and it was exciting - so exciting we played “Paper Scissors Rocks” to see who should open it. Our goodies were all carefully wrapped in a box of gorgeous pink packaging, we each took the item’s we’d ordered and set off to try them out. All we can say is that when it comes to the best, in regards to customer service, delivery expectations, T.V. personalities and the thousands of unique, quality assured products, TVSN sets the bar.

TOUS Jewellery BRINGING SPANISH LUXURY TO NEW ZEALAND

Rosa Tous 52

T

OUS jewellery has humble beginnings in 1920, Barcelona, where it began as a small watch repair shop. It has now grown into a global luxury jewellery brand, loved worldwide for its playful and innovative designs. However, as the founder’s descendants have brought TOUS into the modern world, the original values of the company remain its foundation. We spoke with Rosa Tous, the Corporate Vice President of TOUS about her family’s history and how it has shaped the brand. Who was the inspiration behind TOUS and is your family history still a core part of the brand? Salvador Tous Blavi and his wife, Teresa Ponsa Mas, opened a small watch repair workshop in 1920 which gradually ventured into jewellery. In 1965, Salvador Tous Ponsa, my father, married Rosa Oriol Porta and with their combined vision and creativity, they introduced a new concept of jewellery. In the 1970s, Rosa Oriol began to personalise her clients’ jewellery, turning their pieces into more modern and updated creations. Following this success, Rosa started to design her own jewellery. It’s popularity was driven by the fresh and novel appeal which was unavailable in the market at the time. Since that time, TOUS has designed a style of jewellery that is unique around the world, giving rise to a new take on luxury. The pieces are magical, fun and novel pieces that are far removed from traditional jewellery. Being a family business, this vision prevails within the company today. How has TOUS retained it’s original family values? During the 1980s, the four Tous daughters joined the company. Currently, Alba Tous has the role of Company President, Marta Tous leads the Research and Design Department and I am the Corporate Vice-President. From these key positions, we are able to ensure that the brand and its designs continue to reflect the unique values and vision of TOUS. We’re lucky that we’re a very close family! It’s hugely satisfying to see us move forward with that sense of unity intact, and that’s what helps us to grow as people and professionals. How do you ensure the designs are innovative each year? We present 30 jewellery and 50 accessories collections each year, which means our incredible team is working hard all year round. As Research and Design Director, Marta Tous and her team work on the development of collections with the innovative spirit that we are known for. This ensures our brand values remain at the forefront: tenderness, fun and a youthful spirit. For her part, my mother has gone back to her roots and designs unique pieces, playing with new ideas and creating precious Atelier TOUS pieces. What’s something we don’t know about you? To switch off from work, my favourite place to spend the

summer holidays is the Costa Brava. It’s quiet, and perfect for relaxing and recharging one’s batteries. I find that the serenity of the sea is essential when taking a break from daily life. If you could pick one thing you love most in fashion what would it be? In jewellery, I go for bear-shaped earrings set with diamonds, without a doubt. And for accessories, I’m a big fan of shoes and bags. I love them! What is TOUS’s most popular bag? One of our most iconic bags is Mossaic, which is an elegant and versatile piece that we’re sure is going to become one of our classics. This is because it was conceived from a desire to pay homage to the TOUS heritage. The Mossaic Tote Bag’s appeal lies in the iconography of the four interwoven bears, which represent my three sisters and I. This design is a real tribute to my family, and especially my mother Rosa Oriol, and her 50 years of creativity and passion. How does TOUS fit into the New Zealand lifestyle? Your country is known worldwide for it’s unique experiences and incredible places to enjoy. As such, our two New Zealand stores are designed with our clients in mind, that their shopping trips become an experience. A few years ago, you would need to travel to Australia or Europe to access this kind of product. We’re very pleased, as our jewellery and accessories are an ideal fit for New Zealanders’ tastes. This is thanks to the universal TOUS values that all of our products embody: tenderness, fun, and with a youthful spirit, all represented perfectly by our iconic bear.

Gathered from the Garden

E

arlier this month Eye Magazine caught up with Hansens Flowers and we were quickly brought up to date with the latest tips & trends for flowers in Twenty-Sixteen. Like our food, flowers too have taken a more organic approach when it comes to what’s on trend. Locally-grown, seasonal, ephemeral and foraged flowers will continue to be seen …EVERYWHERE! Flowers are moving away from the perfectly rounded and instead are seeking designs that are more rustic and have that freshly-gathered-from-the-garden feel. Deeper, richer color palettes have emerged. In one direction, we’ll be seeing designs incorporating moodier, heartier colors including deep raspberry, merlot, and earthy wine-browns and in the other direction, we’ll see variations on sherbet tones, including warmer, saturated palettes of soft orange, peach, coral, and rust colors. Also get reacquainted with plants! They last a long time and as winter gets harsher, it’s a way of bringing the peace and tranquillity of outdoors in. And lastly, an important tip we must share with you; make sure you are properly cleaning well used vases as they often contain microorganisms that will kill your flowers. Fill the vase with hot water and mix in a tablespoon of baking soda and one of white vinegar! Scrub the insides and wipe clean before placing flowers in.

Get Serious About Shooting

I

n 1990 Serious Shooters started out as a small retail shop attached to one of the owners professional photographic studio. The owners decided that there had to be a better way to retail firearms in New Zealand; you either had fishing and hunting shops who were only partially interested in firearms, or specialist gun shops, who were only interested in lining their own pockets. The service from the two options were patchy, where only certain goods were available and only the ones they decided for you. Thus, Serious Shooters the Gunshop was created in 1993. The business has grown immensely since its original days in Penrose and in late 2011 Richard Munt took over the shop. Richard wanted to modernise and improve the systems at Serious Shooters, while at the same time, keep the shop well rooted in its original concept of the best products, best guns, best prices and best service. In mid 2014 they moved to just up the road at 726 Great South Road and the new location boasted an even larger rifle and shotgun room, dedicated handgun room, more products and plenty of parking. The new shop called for a gun room like no other, they wanted it to be well laid out so the firearms were easily accessible, easily visible and shown to customers in an aesthetic way. With a separate room for restricted firearms, Serious Shooters achieved what they believe to be the best gun shop! The staff at Serious Shooters are all keen users of firearms, whether it be through competitive shooting, small game hunting or getting out there and really going for the big stuff! Each is knowledgeable and boasts a range of specialist talent. Because of this, it allows them to provide hands on first-hand product knowledge including competition pistol, rifle and shotgun shooting, ammunition reloading, big and small game hunting and possum trapping; they really know their stuff! Throughout the 22 years that Serious Shooters has been in play, they’ve proudly served and supported New Zealand shooters and hunters. They’ve sponsored a range of shooting clubs and hunting/ outdoor events, in order to keep the sport alive. What’s more is that they’re continually seeking new and different products for the shooter, developing business from all angles to best serve their customers. They even manufacturer, or have made for them, their own case lubricant, tumbling media, tumblers, cleaning accessories and gun cases. Open 7 days a week, Serious Shooters is your one stop shop for all your firearm needs.

The Ultimate Luxury Vacation: Golf India WITH SHAMMI SANDHU

B

orn and raised in India, Shammi migrated to Queenstown in 1993. She established a successful and much-loved restaurant, Mantra. However, Shammi wanted a way to show New Zealanders India from an insider’s perspective. In 1997, she began designing and personally escorting group and individual tours to India. She explains that her bespoke tours are created to be unique, exclusive and personal to those involved. Shammi is dedicated; putting long hours into every trip, ensuring no minor details are missed. Be it the restaurant or the tour, it is in Shammi’s nature to tackle every task she faces with passion and focus. “Having lived in the Western world for over 30 years,” Shammi explains, “I am able to mix the East and West well, due to an understanding of cultures and tolerance.” Building on her successful tours, Shammi has ventured into tailored golf tours of India. Not only does this highlight the wonders of India but gives a unique twist for those with a keen golfing interest. These specialist golf tours involve taking in India’s most sought-after signature championship golf courses. This includes those designed by golfing legends such as American Jack Nicklaus and Australian Greg Norman.

68

Shammi’s Boutique Tours What is it about India that entices global travelers, year after year? It could be the stunning architecture, from the grand Taj Mahal to the revered Golden Temple. Alternatively, it could be in pursuit of the mouth-watering food, made fresh daily on the streets for tourists to enjoy. Or is it the vibrant culture, filled with bright colours, loud music and a rich history? For these reasons and more, India has become a popular tourist destination spot. However, getting the most out of a trip to a country like India isn’t always easy. With so many places to see, it can be hard to fit everything into your itinerary. With this in mind, Indian-born New Zealander Shammi Sandhu pondered a way to give New Zealanders an authentic and enjoyable experience in India.

Shammi Sandhu

Why golf tourism? Living in Queenstown, Shammi has been involved with NZ Open at The Hills in Arrowtown. Moreover, Mantra restaurant in Arrowtown has become a popular spot for avid golfers. These tours provide a unique opportunity to not only play at India’s prestigious golf courses but to also experience everything India has to offer. Furthermore, the country’s culture, cuisine and rich heritage provides an unforgettable holiday for the less keen golfers coming along. Shammi’s dedication is apparent in the lineup of unique experiences put together for each tour, golfing enthusiast or not. One of the key highlights is Kolkata’s Royal Calcutta Golf Club. It was established in 1829 and redesigned by Peter Thomson. The 18-hole course is synonymous with the sport of golf in India and the oldest golf club outside of the British Isles. Its title as “Royal” was given to commemorate Queen Mary and King George V 1911 visit to Kolkata. Of course, there are many excursions for non-golfers as well. This includes a

sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra, an elephant ride at Jaipur’s Amber Fort and a stay at a luxury jungle resort to sight tigers in their natural habitat. From Kolkata to Mumbai and everything in between, Shammi’s tours have been tried and tested. Her customers are proof of this, such as Sir Michael and Lady Christine Hill who have long had a fascination with India’s culture. “Travelling through Rajasthan was marvelous. Sumptuous palaces, temples and hotels, glorious landscapes, delicious and varied Indian cuisine, and a totally fascinating variety of cultures and occupations,” they explained. “With Shammi as a friend and guide, armed with all the local knowledge, it is an experience not to be missed.” What’s in store for the future for Shammi? Not one to be content, Shammi is constantly pushing the boundaries to create new experiences for her tours. For 2016 and 2017, Shammi is already on her way to designing new boutique tours to India including a Wellness and Ayurveda Retreat in Goa and Kerala, a Sri Lanka and South India tour and an East India and Bhutan trip. This will all be alongside her current India tours, which are scheduled to depart in July this year. Furthermore, Shammi’s vision extends beyond India and Sri Lanka, with a tour to St. Petersburg and Moscow. This will include a first class Trans-Siberian train journey from Moscow to Ulan Bator in Mongolia, a true bucket list experience. With all her tours, Shammi invites guests to “expect the unexpected” for the most memorable moments. What better way is there to see India than with a local? With her experience, passion and wonderful attitude, you’ll be sure to have an unforgettable trip of a lifetime.

Feeling the inevitable onset of reaching my mid 50s I was looking for a watersport that would be challenging, enjoyable and great for my fitness without adding to my aches and pains of previous adventurous water pursuits such as jet skiing and wakeboarding. Enter the SUP Centre in Newmarket and my journey and addiction with stand up paddle boarding (SUP) began. I was assured by the great team there that regardless of my age, ability or size, this sport was going to fit the bill and I have not been disappointed. Living in Northland provides a diverse outdoor environment, with rivers, estuaries, lakes and surf so the board needed to meet all those conditions. No longer needing to consider small children, my choice of board was a mixture of paddling fast on flat water, venturing into the surf and of course it had to look great! The Riviera PaddleSurf along with a Vantage adjustable R8 Carbon Fiber paddle was soon loaded onto the top of my car and the rest is history. Thanks SUP Centre for assisting me in becoming a SUP addict. — Carolyn Alexander Bennett

Mr. Opinionator

I

might have mentioned, in previous columns, that I am not a spring chicken. Dying and quality of life, then, are assuming more importance as the weekends are counted off. I was so vexed by the issue (for others as well as for me), that I have sent off a submission to the Select Committee concerning the “Petition of Hon. Maryan Street and others re medically-assisted dying.” What worries me is that there seems an overwhelming support for legislative change, yet the political commentators are looking at their runes and prophesying that there will be no change in the immediate future. What?! We are a country which has led the way in any number of important social issues, yet, here we are, apparently unable to follow a number of enlightened European nations and, even, some states in the US, on this subject. So, dear reader (singular), I welcome you into my submission, where changes have been made only for personal or practical reasons. Read on. 1. ... 2. I note that I wish to appear, in person, before the Committee. 3. There is nothing confidential in this submission. 4. In February 2016, I will be 63 years of age. … I am an atheist. I would like to think that I am mentally competent “as we speak”, albeit that my wife might want to disagree. 5. I am getting into the phase of my life where I face increased risks of dementia and life-threatening illnesses; there is always a risk of a serious accident. 6. I submit it is helpful if I state what I would not want:

86

a.I would not want to be inside a broken mind with no escape other than natural death (“mental incompetence”). b.I would not want to be inside a broken body with no escape other than natural death (“physical incompetence”). 7. Examples of mental incompetence would include (bearing in mind that I have no medical expertise): a. Alzheimer’s and the varying types of dementia; b. A persistent vegetative state. 8. Examples of physical incompetence would be: awaiting a death via serious illness such as cancer, tetraplegia, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and the like. 9. At the time of penning this submission, mentally competent, I am absolutely confident that I would not want to be forced to live with either incompetency. How, then, should society allow my needs be met? 10. Mental incompetency – my views on a definition: a. While mentally competent, I want to be able to define situations whereupon my life should be terminated or allowed to come to an end. b. In the situation where I am apparently functioning physically but I am demented, there would be a simple test: do I recognise my children? If I do not, I do not want to live. I accept that there are likely to be more technical ways of defining the requisite level of dementia for the purposes of an exit; I have proffered this definition simply to show the nature of the situation which I fear. c. If I am in a persistent vegetative state, with no reasonable prospect of an imminent escape, I want to be able to provide that my life should be terminated or allowed to come to an end where two doctors diagnose persistent

vegetative state with no reasonable prospect of regaining consciousness within the next 6 months. 11. Physical incompetency – my views on a definition: a. In cases of physical incompetency, given the fact that I will be mentally competent, I do not see the need to define the degree of any such affliction in order for me to seek release. I expect I would know, were I to be so afflicted, when my condition was abhorrent to me. I acknowledge that such subjectivity makes it very difficult to have a complete and exclusive testable definition. b. Not that it should matter to my right to seek release but, in many cases, the definition should also include the prospect of further decline (physical and mental), which a “normal’” person should have the right to avoid. I use Parkinson’s as an example of a physical incompetency, which is likely to have increasing physical and mental degradation of competencies. I appreciate that dementia is over-represented in those suffering Parkinson’s, as well as afflictions such as loss of impulse control behaviours (hypersexuality, gambling, spending, hoarding etc). Similarly with Huntington’s, abnormal and antisocial behaviour can predate motor disorders and chorea symptoms by as much as 3 or 4 decades and dementia is an inevitable component in decline. I cite, also, the further decline associated with serious illnesses such as cancer. The late Ms Seales is an example of a decline I should wish to avoid. 12. I have emphasised Parkinson’s and Huntington’s because they illuminate the difficulties in having a test when the subject is physical incompetence. Although I might be suffering a loss of impulse control, short of sliding into dementia, it is likely that I will recognise

my children. Yet, as I pen this submission, I am quite certain that, having reached such a stage as I would then declare to be intolerable, I would rather be dead than have to bear the increasing physical and mental deficiencies. 13. That which I have described so far seems to fit, mostly, within the Belgian law on the subject, as it was enacted in 2002 …: a. Physical incompetence – amongst other requirements, “where the patient is in a medically futile condition of constant and unbearable physical or mental suffering that cannot be alleviated, resulting from a serious and incurable disorder caused by illness or accident”. b. Mental incompetence – what the Belgians call “The advance directive”, where a competent person may make provision in advance for the possibility that “the patient suffers from a serious and incurable disorder, called by illness or accident”. 14. Unfortunately, in Belgium, the advance directive is ineffective unless “the patient is no longer conscious”. In my submission, then, it does not address the biggest fear I have, which is being demented for years on end with no escape. We must have a law, as I have described, which will allow me to avoid such a situation – for me and for my family. 15. General: a. Immutable – Unlike the situation with organ donors, where the deceased’s personal representatives seem to be able to overrule the deceased’s unequivocal direction to be an organ donor, I would not want anyone to be able to change my provision; it is my life and it must be my death. There would need to be protection for me from (possibly) well-intentioned members of my family acting under the Protection of Personal and Property Rights Act 1988 or similar provisions. My

lawfully stated declaration that, in certain circumstances, I wish to die, should not be overturned by a member of my family who, for example, becomes a committed Catholic and decides that only God should determine when I die. b. How do I die? – in this submission, I have used the phrase: “my life should be terminated or allowed to come to an end” because I recognise that it is not impossible that there might be some reluctance from this Select Committee to allow a positive act of termination as contrasted to letting me die from something. It is my submission that a positive act of termination should be permitted. i. Euthanasia - I have been involved with sport horses for many years; it is not uncommon to have horses put down. The point of this anecdote is that a veterinary surgeon is able to euthanise a horse quickly and without pain or suffering for the horse; in spite of the seeming inability of the American legal system to execute prisoners by lethal injection, I submit that euthanasia of humans is not a difficult task. I am unaware that the Belgians have had any difficulties in effecting terminations to date. ii. As a fall-back position, I submit that I would be content to be lightly sedated and denied food or water until I died but, really, why should we not grasp the nettle and bring in sound practices by way of legislation? c. Benefits – there are many other benefits: i. In situations where my condition would require reliance (complete or partial) on the health system (hospitals etc), there are savings to be made by Society. ii. In situations where my condition would require my having to live in a rest home at the taxpayers’ expense, there are savings to be made by Society. iii. Related to the previous point, if I

do not qualify for a full subsidy, my life savings (if any) would not be consumed by rest homes when the major purpose of my life’s industry has been to provide for my children and grandchildren. iv. My family would be spared from the grief of having my demise played out in slow motion before their eyes. d. Religion - in the 2013 census, 41.9% reported no religious affiliation. I suggest that 41.9% is an understatement, given that the question was “What is your religion?” rather than something like: “Do you believe in a deity?” Take me; I was christened in an Anglican church, so it would not have been an incorrect answer if I had replied “Christian” – “Anglican”. I suggest that some citizens will have answered by naming their family’s religious affiliation. No matter, really; let us assume that, at the moment, 50% of the population is atheist. It is my experience, in the many and varied discussions I have had over euthanasia recently, that the only people disagreeing with a right to die are religious. There is a simple answer for such people: do not seek termination for yourself but do not tell me that I should live my life according to your deity.

T

he new Honda HR-V is a real head turner. A versatile 5-door SUV that is sleek and sophisticated, with sharp, dynamic lines that look modern and elegant. The HR-V Sport certainly passes the style test, with a prominent black grille, chrome trim, and alloy wheels that complement the striking lines of the vehicle. The rear doors, which on first glance aren’t visible with concealed door handles, are seamlessly integrated into the design, while the LED headlights and daytime running lights complete the elegant exterior beautifully. The interior is just as impressive. The usable space is the first thing that strikes you on entering the car. The large glass areas make the cabin seem open and airy, and the sleek dash is highlighted by piano black accents. The placement of the electric parking brake feels modern and increases the feeling of space in the cabin, and the keyless push-button start is a great feature. The leather trim on the seats and the door linings add to a feeling of luxury, while the soft-touch materials and integrated dash design adds to a sporty feel. Open up the panoramic SkyRoof to enjoy the air on a sunny winter day and the generous windows afford fantastic views. The HR-V Sport has a brilliant LaneWatch Camera, which sits in the left side mirror and displays the view in a large 7 inch touch screen, reducing your blind spot when changing lanes. The magic seats offer 18 different seating configurations. The “Long-Mode” accommodates items up to 2.44m long, perfect for surfboards or ladders, while the “Tall-Mode” folds the rear seat up and back, leaving the floor to ceiling space free for loading tall items, like plants, upright in the car. Intelligent design sees form and function come together perfectly in the new Honda HR-V .

“The HR-V is a very good drive... The overall feel was great – smooth acceleration and the steering had a good turning circle. When I looked inside, it was pretty flash. It’s a really stylish car. For me, it’s all about the sun. I love how the morpho blue colour changes in the sunlight. The SkyRoof is huge and opens with just the touch of a button – that helps after a long summer training session.” — Tyla Nathan-Wong Part of the New Zealand Rugby Sevens team

Divorce 101

BY AMELIA HAYSOM Tips from some of New Zealand’s top lawyers, accountants, psychologists, and real life divorcees on how to cope with relationship dissolution.

H

appily ever after’. We’ve all heard the phrase, time and time again. A cliché, yes, but still undeniably an aspiration for most. Especially for couples who decide to legally bind themselves to each other, in a contract of marriage or civil union, ‘till death do they part. Every year, tens of thousands of Kiwis choose to do it. Many others are in committed de-facto relationships, with the understanding that after a certain amount of time living under the same roof, they have, nonetheless, also headed into a similar ‘what’s mine is yours’ territory. The legality of love is not the most romantic of topics. But unfortunately it is necessary, for in 2014, 8,234 divorces were granted in New Zealand. The five years before that were roughly the same. That’s over 16,000 Kiwis (and their families) being affected by divorce every year, not including those who decide to leave long term de-facto relationships. It’s not all doom and gloom, though, with these figures only accounting for 0.9 % of the number of ongoing marriages. But what happens if you find yourself in the 0.9%? What if you wake up one day, only to realise that your idea of happily ever after no longer includes the person who sleeps beside you? If you are considering getting a divorce or leaving your defacto relationship, there are many avenues of assistance to help you with the emotional and legal situations ahead. Still, the decision to separate can be overwhelming. Jane Hunter, respected Barrister and a specialist in child and family law, says the first thing to remember is that information is key. “Before you go forward with anything you need to understand your financial position, your legal position, and what to expect

18

from the [separation] process. If you don’t know the answer to those questions, then you need to get hold of a lawyer who can help you to find those answers.” If you realise that you do need a lawyer to help you separate, Jane Hunter advises shopping around until you find the right person for you. “Talk to as many lawyers as you like – many will offer a free initial consultation.” Use the consultation period as an opportunity to feel out whether they are the right fit. Hunter says to remember that lawyers are just people at the end of the day. “Without any disrespect to any lawyers out there, we don’t always get on with everybody. We can’t always communicate with every person. Find a lawyer with whom you can relate, to whom you feel like you can tell what you need to, and whom you feel understands you.” There will come a point in the process of your separation where you will be asked by your lawyer to trust their judgement. “If [my client doesn’t] have confidence in me, or [doesn’t] feel like I understand them, then it is hopeless,” says Hunter. “You are going to be awake all night, stressing whether or not I am giving you the right information. You might not feel like you can tell me the things that you think I need to know, which I may absolutely need to know... In my view that is critical; that working relationship of trust and confidence is essential in this field and is what will lead you to the best possible outcome.” When looking for the right lawyer, Hunter says to ask yourself: Do I feel heard? Do they understand me? Can they respond to what I am asking them? If I am on the wrong track, can they explain why? If not, keep looking until you find a lawyer whom you can depend on.

How long is it going to take? Jennie Hawker, Partner at Wynyard Wood Lawyers & Notaries says that there is no average amount of time for a separation to be finalised. ”Every couple is different. As a family lawyer I tend to see the worst side of separation which can involve infidelity or violence as the reason for separation. [But] there are many couples who part amicably and do not need lawyers involved unless they have property to divide.” If you fall into the latter category, this can largely shorten the time it takes to get a divorce. Marni*, 28, finalised a divorce from her partner last year, and due to her and her ex-husband’s lack of assets, it took only the mandatory twoyear separation time. “Luckily for me, we didn’t own a house or have any kids, so the hardest part of the initial separation was selling our car and deciding who got what dinner plates,” she says. If you do own property and/or have kids, a formal separation can take a lot longer, so be prepared. “Lawyers have specific obligations when advising on separation and those obligations cannot be ignored,” says Jennie. “A common misconception is that a couple can agree between themselves how they want to divide their property and a lawyer will just “sign it off”. Unfortunately, there are some lawyers out there who might accept that instruction, but most of us will go through the necessary process carefully.” Even in the most amicable of separations your lawyer need to be satisfied that all assets have been disclosed, and your lawyer needs to know the values of those assets. “Advice needs to be given and we then need to be in a position to certify in the agreement that we have fully explained the effects and implications of the arrangement that has been entered into,” says Hawker. “There is also a risk that a rushed agreement may be overturned later if someone claims that they received inadequate advice, or that the agreement was (or now is) seriously unjust.”

Jane Hunter

TIPS FROM A

LAWYER

Jane Hunter hunterlaw.co.nz

See a counsellor before confirming a separation is what you really want. Information is power. Go shopping for your lawyer before you settle. If you have any, put the kids first.

Jennie Hawker

Pick your battles.

Jennie Hawker wynyardwood.co.nz

Be patient – separation takes time. Be realistic about what can and cannot be achieved. Don’t drag the kids into disputes. Upskill yourself on your assets.

How does child custody work today? If you have kids, and you can workout between you on who will look after the kids and when, there is no need to get the Family Court involved. However, if you can’t come to an agreement, there are some mandatory government processes you’ll have to go through, which includes a Parenting Through Separation programme and mediation, to help you come to a conclusion. If this doesn’t work – you can apply to the Family Court with your case. Jane Hunter says today there is no bias towards who will get custody of the kids when a couple splits. “When I started working, the preference for mothers to get custody was still there, although waning,” says

Hunter. “But now that has absolutely gone. The presumption now is that children will and should have as much of a relationship with both parents as they can. In most cases, it is really important for kids to have a good understanding of their parents for their own psychological wellbeing. So the court works very hard to optimise the relationship that children have with both parents.”

But that’s not to say that 100% of cases will come out with equal share. “The court has to look at what is the optimum arrangement for these particular children in their circumstance, focusing on the children, not the parents - that is something that people find difficult to get their head around.” To ensure the kids are looked after as well as can be both during and after separation, Hunter offers a simple but important piece of advice. “Agree with your partner that you will sit down, get out the calendar, park everything else and say ‘what are we doing in the next six months?’ Most of us have a rough idea of what is going to happen within that timeframe – school holidays, school term, public holidays, etc. If you can sit down and see what it’s going to look like in a non-emotional way - who is doing what, what are the work commitments, what are the children’s commitments - it will make life much easier.” But make sure to repeat this sit down process every six months. “People get themselves into a lot of trouble when they think they can put a plan for the kids in place the day that they separate, and think that it’s going to last until their two-year-old is 16,” says Hunter. “That is not realistic. Our lives are fluid, our needs change, and our children’s needs change.”

19

Dealing with the emotional effects While it’s important to remain as practical as possible during a separation, the undeniable psychological effects of a separation can be grim. It is advisable to seek professional help to guide you (and the kids if you have any) through this difficult time as healthily as possible. “A lot of the really ugly divorces that you hear about are because one or both parties think that what they are asking the judge to do is to morally vindicate them,” says Hunter. “If that is how you feel – and it’s understandable that you might feel that if your relationship has broken down really badly - then I suggest parking the official separation and going to see a counsellor first.” A key duty of any Family lawyer is to promote reconciliation and conciliation where it is possible, via seeing a counsellor. “If it doesn’t work, then at least you can say that you have tried,” says Hunter. “The New Zealand mandatory two-year separation period is precisely there for that reason, to help people to stop and reflect, to sort their affairs before the marriage is formally ended, and also to test whether their marriage is truly at an end.” David Stebbing, a respected child and family psychologist based in Auckland, has some tips on what to work on during that two-year stage. “When I meet with couples for the initial consultation I want to know how they manage both their personal differences and their competing needs and desires,” he says. “Typically, I hear one of two things; either they are having damaging and unfruitful arguments on a regular basis, or alternatively they have given up arguing as fighting is now seen as an exercise in futility (i.e. “There’s no point arguing with him/her as they’re selfish, unreasonable, cruel, manipulative etc.”). Either of these patterns kill relationships.” “David Schnarch promotes the idea of Meaningful Endurance in our love lives, which importantly is not about hitting your head against a brick wall; brow beating our partner into submission; or putting up with an abusive relationship,

20

[but which involves] bringing the best of ourselves into dialogue with our partner time and again, so we can continue to better understand ourselves as well as them. The key message is that sometimes it is necessary to tolerate a degree of pain for growth in all aspects of our lives, and also if there’s no growth in our relationship then the chances are that ultimately it’s not very meaningful either.” If you’ve realised the relationship is no longer meaningful and has well and truly ended, it is still advisable to see someone to help you learn to cope with the loss. 62-year-old Hilary separated from her husband ten years ago, and has since remarried. She says “divorce can feel like a death. It’s like grieving for someone who died, because when you realise your relationship with them has ended, it is a death in some way – a death of the relationship. In a sense, it is worse, because they are still around to remind you about the failure of your marriage,” she says. It is important to find ways to healthily move on from the experience, and seeing a counsellor or psychologist can be a huge help. For Marni, seeing a counsellor was one of the best decisions she made during her marriage dissolution. “[My counsellor] helped me work through my initial shock, anger and denial and reach a place where I could move forward and heal. We all go to the doctor or dentist when we aren’t feeling well, so why not

also have a regular mental health check up with a counsellor?” If you have kids, the idea of separation may seem too psychologically harmful to put them through, but staying together for their benefit is worse. “The worst thing you can do, is to do nothing,” says Hunter. Piers*, 65, who had two kids with his now ex-wife, agrees. “The old adage of staying in a marriage for the children doesn’t work,” he says. “Once you realise your marriage is stuffed, just end it. Accept that there was fault on both sides, and work towards the best way to look after the kids. It’s the hardest decision you’ll ever make but if you truly love your kids, sometimes you have to take the personal hit for their benefit, and that may mean having to walk away from your unhappy marriage.” Jennie Hawker reiterates the importance of putting the kids first. “Your children do not want or need to know how awful their other parent is. Some parents cannot help but bring the children into the dispute, which is unnecessary and extremely unfair on them.” Piers* concurs. “You have to get the importance of your children sitting above all else in your head,” he says. “Never use the children as a weapon between the two of you because the damage you will do to your children will be horrific.” “And never put down your wife to your children, because nothing drives them away faster than you attacking

TIPS for a

troubled marriage

Manage your emotions – be more connected to them and aware of them, but not attached to them. Sweat the small stuff (fix problems as soon as they arrive, don’t leave them to linger). Look inwardly rather than outwardly. Don’t avoid difficult yet important discussions that contribute to growth. Seek help as early as possible – the earlier the more likely your relationship will be salvageable.

their mother,” he adds. “Every time I got upset about things during the separation period and I revealed my anger towards my wife, I noticed my relationship with the kids would go backwards. After that I stopped ever dissing their mother in front of them. My ex-wife, however, talked negatively about me to the children throughout our separation, and in the end, I think in part because of this, I ended up with the kids.” Hilary says the most important thing she learned during her and her exhusband’s separation was to tell the kids that it wasn’t their fault. “I’ll never forget this one story - there was a wedding photo of us on the mantle peace in our lounge room; during the separation period I kept turning it upwards and downwards when we were going through the rough patches. My then two-year-old would often be hanging out in a cot in that lounge. I thought she was oblivious to my spurts of visual distress – she was

so young! - but one day, I found that photo hidden under my bed pillow, torn into little pieces.” “You think you can hide things from your children but you can’t,” says *Piers. “There have been times when I’ve spoken with my daughter, 10 years after her mum and I got divorced, and she’ll tell me stories that I never thought she had a clue about. Keeping things from the kids is pointless, because they will know anyway or they will get the wrong end of the stick. You may as well control the message.” “Just tell them what the plan is in simple terms, and do it calmly” says Hilary. “Also, let the school teachers and the school nurse know what is happening at home, so they know to look out for your kids. If you’ve got teenagers, figure out if you need to arrange for them to get compassionate consideration during exam times if the chaos back home is affecting their focus at school.”

On seeking financial advice

On keeping perspective

Depending on the number of assets you and your partner collectively possess, and especially if either or both of you own companies, it could be wise to employ an accountant to ensure that assets are correctly and fairly valued – and that they are all on the table. When helping couples work through murky monetary waters, Fergus Cleaver, Principle at Cleaver Partners Chartered Accountants asks his clients: “Do you have a Relationship Property agreement in place? Are there any potential claims from prior (or current) lovers? Do either of you have any Trusts? [If so,] who controls the Trusts and has gifting been completed? Do either of you have any businesses and what are they worth? Do you know how much income is generated by the business(es)? If you have a business or businesses, this can affect the property split, spousal maintenance and child support,” says Fergus Cleaver. On the flipside, if you don’t co-own anything largely valuable, the assistance may not be necessary. “[Because we didn’t have any major assets] I didn’t use an accountant,” says Marni – “Instead, when I was going through the separation, I sat down with my older sister and a bottle of wine and we slowly worked our way through all the bills, debts and bank accounts to divide everything evenly.” If you do share assets, accept that what was your norm before will not be your norm afterwards. “Thing like homes, cars, boats, and the family bach – the idea of you still owning every one of those things is gone,” says *Piers, who did work with an accountant and highly recommends it. “You have to accept that there will be a destruction of your will in that respect, too.

“Be realistic,” says Hawker. “Not everything that you might want to achieve can be achieved. Often the best and least painful outcome is a win/win, which means you may not come out completely ‘on top’”. “It’s important to pick your battles, says Hunter. “Think ‘if I look back in 20 years’ time, will this issue actually matter?’ It’s hard when you are in the middle of the separation and things are fraught between you - and the bugger’s got one up on you again - to let go of the fact that on Christmas day they want to get the kids at 3pm instead of 4. I always say run the ruler over it, will that matter down the track? What will the kids remember? Will they remember that they left at 3pm or 4? Or will they remember that Mum and Dad had a hell of a fight that was really unpleasant on Christmas Day, and everyone was miserable because of it?” It can be hard to do, but try to step back and look at the bigger picture, advises Hunter. “Think about what is really at stake, otherwise you can fight over a broken fingernail,” she says. “I’ve seen a couple fight over a $30 cordless jug. There were a total of three lawyers in the room with an average hourly cost of about $400 each, arguing about this $30 jug! It’s about perspective. Try not to lose sight over the purpose of the separation. The sooner you can disengage the better, because your life will be better for it.” Hawker says it also helps to try to have a sense of humour. “The process can be a long one and a stressful one. Find a lawyer you can have a laugh with and try not to take everything too seriously. It will pass.”

The road to recovery The ending of a marriage or significant relationship is never easy. It can be an unsettling and traumatic experience. But in the end, you will be far better for it if your relationship wasn’t healthy. “Just be kind to yourself and take each day as it comes,” says Marni. “Some days I felt fine, full of energy and with hope for the future. Other days I just wanted to curl up in a ball and sob the day away. I came to realise that both are fine and you should never beat yourself up for forgetting about the divorce for a while, or alternatively for reliving it all over and over again.” “Also, have something to constantly look forward to,” Marni adds. “Whether it be a massage, manicure, dinner with friends or on a larger scale, planning a holiday. Once I filed my divorce papers I headed overseas by myself for two weeks of fun and shopping. It was a really lovely way to close the chapter on what was an incredibly hard and sad time of my life.” “You can’t underestimate good friends,” says Hilary. “Surround yourself with them. Also, have faith in the world - you don’t know where the good things will come from. Complete strangers will come out of the woodwork to help. Soon enough, you’ll go from getting through the morning, then get through the afternoon, and then the evening, to eventually getting through a day, a week, a month…. And before you know it, you’ll have got through to the other side.” *Names have been changed to protect anonymity.

J

ennie Hawker, Wynyard Wood’s family-law specialist has some straight-forward tips on how to mitigate a tough process.

Divorce can be ugly especially for families! What is your best advice to those going through a divorce? Get advice early — I see a lot of people who are thinking about separation and want to know what steps they should take before they make their final decision. Try to act like an adult — Unfortunately separation tends to bring out the worst in some people. For example, even though 50% of the care of the children may not be appropriate, they want to fight for that because it’s their “right”. There are a lot of people who want to go about making their former partner’s life difficult because they are aggrieved by the separation. An attitude like that will cost a lot more and not necessarily pay off in the end. Gather information — If you know you are going to leave the relationship but haven’t yet done so, try to find out as much as you can before you do leave. Take copies (or photos) of documents, learn more about the banking, try to get copies of financial statements or trust deeds. Come armed with as much information as you can.

Be realistic — There is a process involved in separation and lawyers are obliged to follow it. The process may not move as quickly as you might like and you may receive advice that you do not want to hear. Remember that your lawyer is a professional and they are asking questions and providing advice for a good reason. There may be claims that you have that you did not know about or have not thought about. Your lawyer’s job is to gather all the facts and consider the best outcome for you. Last words… Remember when it comes to divorce; no one approach suits all people. Generally, I will take the approach that suits the situation. If my client is being bullied we can take a firm approach. If there are young children who will suffer from an adversarial approach it is much better to tread carefully. It gets better. This is just a short period of time where things are difficult, and once it’s over you can move on. If you enter the process with a reasonable attitude, follow your lawyer’s advice and are prepared to compromise on some issues the process will be much quicker and a lot less painful.

Specialising in all aspects of Family Law, Jennie Hawker will ensure that her approach suits your needs and will help to make a tough, emotional process as easy as possible.

Love on the rocks? HERE ARE DAVID STEBBING’S KEY POINTS FOR A TROUBLED RELATIONSHIP

Manage your emotions One of the most powerful determinants of a fulfilling relationship is how skilfully each person is able to manage their own challenging emotion. If you are able to label and express your upset, anger and frustration etc. in an open, measured and non-accusatory way, then the chances are that you’ll not only feel happier about your relationship but that you’ll also feel generally better in yourself. A technique known as Mindfulness, now taught by a number of counsellors and psychologists, can be invaluable in helping individuals to become more connected, yet less attached to, their deeper emotions in a way that leads to greater emotional flexibility and freedom. Sweat the small stuff Often couples present for relationship therapy at a point of crisis, with infidelity being a common motivator for seeking help. Of course a crisis can be a wonderful opportunity for personal and partnership growth, but really, who needs the distress? Taking the advice of world-renowned relationship researcher, John Gottman, who suggests focusing on improving the quality of the moment-to-moment,

24

day-to-day interactions between you and your partner, seems like a very sensible thing to do. The magic ratio of 5-to-1 (five positive interactions to every one negative) has been shown to characterise happy relationships, with this figure being an important reminder to accentuate the positive, and if not completely eliminate the negative, then at least not to give it too much of a look in. Look inwardly rather than outwardly When a relationship is in trouble individuals tend to become very focused on what’s wrong with their partner and/ or their partner’s behaviour and much less focused on what’s maybe something that they themselves could work on improving. Ultimately, it is impossible to change another person’s thoughts feeling or actions, while on the flip side it is always possible to recalibrate our own approach or perspective. In my experience if somebody, or better still both people in a relationship, are able to openly look inside themselves for what needs to be different in their own behaviour and then make the requisite changes, a relationship that has been in trouble can not only improve but ultimately flourish.

Seeking help Unfortunately all to often, when I meet with a couple for the first time their relationship has been ‘on the rocks’ for some considerable time. As we continue to endure an unhappy union for months, and often years on end, both our own vitality and that of our relationship progressively wanes to a point of extinction. If you know that things between you and your partner aren’t right address it. This can simply be about arranging a time to have a particular discussion, or agreeing to you both reading a particular book on improving intimate relationships. Obviously I’m a strong advocate for relationship therapy so in my view this option should always be on the table. If couple therapy is sought then don’t be too quick to disengage as it takes a therapist time to understand you, your partner and the dynamics between you. Lastly, if you’re not gelling with your therapist (and be careful that it’s not simply that you don’t like having a mirror held up) or making progress then don’t give up, but rather keep trying until you find the person for you.

Anna Jeffs

Anna Jeffs EYE ON THE I

T

racey* knew something wasn’t right. Her husband was working later and later. He started going away on frequent business trips, citing new clients and new contracts. Tracey wanted to believe him but the change in behaviour was making her grow increasingly anxious. Feeling guilty, she found herself searching his jacket for stray hairs, checking his cellphone for illicit text messages, even smelling his shirt for foreign fragrance. She found nothing to prove he was being unfaithful, yet she still felt uneasy. After countless sleepless nights fraught with anxiety, Tracey called a number given to her by a concerned friend. As she dialled her hands shook. A private investigator? Was she really thinking about enlisting a private eye to “spy” on her husband? She lost her nerve a few times, hanging up before it connected. But finally one night, after watching the bedside clock

26

once again tick by 10pm, then 11pm, then striking midnight with no appearance of her husband, the turmoil proved too much. She recovered the slip of paper with the 24/7 phone number of Anna Jeffs Private Investigators, and took action. They say the best of the best comes from personal experience, and for Anna Jeffs that is the case. Because once upon a time, she was in the same situation as Tracey. Anna emigrated to New Zealand in 1999, continuing her lengthy high-end UK legal career working in Family and Criminal Legal Aid, before her role in the Criminal Jury Trial Administration team. She worked alongside top prosecution lawyers, NZ Police, the Defence Counsel and the Judiciary, before her personal life was thrown into disarray in 2013; her (now ex) partner was caught cheating. The devastation was enormous but rather than let it destroy her, Anna saw an opportunity. Recognising the need for investigation and surveillance services with a compassionate touch, not only

in adultery but in all kinds of deceit, searching for missing persons and general tracings, Anna became a licensed Private Investigator and has never looked back. The past three years have seen her establish a highly experienced team of agents, including ex UK and NZ police as well as ex-army personnel. Absolute professionalism and transparency is the Fox philosophy in handling all cases from around the country and overseas. Each is given the utmost confidentiality and discretion, along with what is often missing in other businesses in the same field – empathy. Because Anna has been there, and she gets it. They say “knowledge is power”. And that’s very true. But Anna firmly works by the notion that “knowledge is power with action”. She believes everyone, be it in a personal or working environment, deserves to live lives without lies, infidelity, mistrust and suspicion. *Name has been changed to protect privacy

Empowering New Zealand Businesses A MINUTE WITH ONE OF NEW ZEALAND’S NEWEST ELECTRICITY SUPPLIERS

P

rime Energy is a 100% New Zealand owned Electricity Retailer based in Auckland specialising in the supply of Electricity to Business and Commercial customers throughout New Zealand. Commencing business in 2010 Prime Energy thrives on the “can do” attitude and putting customer requirements first. We spoke with CEO and Owner Michael Skates to find out a little more about this burgeoning Retailer...

30

Firstly, tell us a little about how Prime Energy came about? What was the inspiration behind it? My inspiration was to provide NZ businesses with a competitive, customerfocused alternative to traditional electricity retailers. There appeared to be a lack of true diversity within the electricity sector with the larger retailers having “subbrands or percentage ownership of the smaller retailers (their competition). I incorporated Prime Energy and commenced the process to become a Tier 1 Retailer, competing for customers head to head with all other Retailers. Prime offers competitive pricing, a one call solution for all electricity related requirements and I believe a level of service envied by our competitors. How are you different from traditional electricity companies? At Prime the customer is our focus, because we are small, we are agile and will react to your requests quickly. Our

personalised service team will respond to your calls in a fast, efficient manner, no request being too small or too large. Prime is your one-stop electricity provider and total energy solution. What do many of us not know about the energy we are using? In New Zealand a total of 75% of all electricity generation comes from renewable sources (geothermal, hydro, bioenergy and wind) the fourth highest in the OECD. What is your recommendation for keeping household costs down when it comes to electricity usage? A large percentage of household/ business consumption is contributed by your lighting load. Retrofitting LED lighting solutions can provide considerable savings when compared to traditional incandescent types. Previously the price of LED solutions has been a barrier but with increasing supply competition and

greater quality controls the modern LED has become more cost effective and a very viable alternative. This year you are sponsoring one lucky family to enjoy free power for a year. Tell us a little more about the initiative? Prime has previously supported various charities as part of our social responsibility initiative. This year Prime has committed to get more involved with our sponsorship and take a personal interest in the recipients we choose to support. Looking forward to confirming our support Family. Final word... As a small to medium sized business we understand the difficulties faced by like-minded business people. We are therefore committed to understand all our customers on an individual basis in order to tailor a solution that best meets their needs.

Making a House, a Home

Elaine Morley

M

eet Elaine, Elaine owns the Rodney G.J. Gardner Homes franchise along with her husband Ross and has been in the G.J. team for over 15 years. Running a very successful business, this powerful duo has been recognised as G.J.’s best franchise internationally many times. With a strong focus on developing their employees and also contributing to their local community, they have built several homes that have been auctioned for charity as well as supporting many local clubs and surrounding schools. This issue Eye caught up with Elaine to learn a little more about what makes them so successful and about the homes they create…

Why did you decide to become a franchisee for G.J. Gardner Homes? What was the attraction? It was really my husband as he was a builder. He wanted something off the tools and more into the volume housing market rather than the high end homes we had been doing for so many years. G.J. Gardner’s were a complete unknown, there was no head office when we signed up but we could see from the Queensland operation, computer system offered and the marketing material available that we could be seen as a serious player with savings to the customer straight away. As well as developing a true business.

42

You’ve been recognised as G.J.’s best franchise internationally many times. Why do you think this is? International Franchise of the Year is judged on many aspects with a heavy weight on customer satisfaction and strength in the market place. We pride ourselves on being Rodney’s no. 1 home builder, a position we have held for around 15 years, but you only get to stay there through continued excellent reputation. Everything we do, everything we empower our staff to do is all towards excellent customer service. The homes we create are the homes people have designed themselves, the added touch is giving them the home they wanted with the confidence of an established business who cares.

What would you say is the biggest trend this year that customers are implementing into their houses? Definitely upmarket kitchens are big right now, butler’s pantries, stone benches, upgraded cabinetry. What’s the most common mistake you see first home builders making? If it is your first home, it is your stepping stone unlike the old days when people built their home and they were there for 25 years, these homes will be sold in 3-5 years so build for that, spend money wisely on parts of the home that make a difference.

Transforming a Home WITH DESIGNWORX

T

ransforming a home, especially a tired villa can be a big task to undertake. More often than not you can come up against big surprises which often come at great cost to your renovation budget. Rather than starting from a clean slate, refurbing a villa means you need to work around what you have and ensure that the character of the building isn’t lost during its transition to an updated version of itself. Amanda Neill and her Designworx team pull together all the design aspects required, from simple colour palettes, to kitchen and bathroom design, transforming villas to a modern, aesthetically pleasing simple design. Taking the guessing game out of renovating, by applying their experience to anticipate unforeseen issues, it is no wonder their portfolio continues to grow with once dated, now glamorous Auckland Villas. Recently the team undertook a classic Devonport family villa (pictured), in need of a completed refurb, including a new addition to the back of the villa to increase its capacity for a growing family. Always seeking to retain some of its original character, Designworx used the existing splashes of red and blue in the artwork as a key starting point for colour scheme in the living areas. The most dramatic transformations of this home are the kitchen and bathrooms. Included in the new addition at the back of the property is the simple yet clever kitchen. With all the mod cons for storage and usability, including butler’s pantry, intelligent ideas such as drawers hidden in toe kicks for extra storage and automatic

44

opening cupboards overhead mean the functionality of the space allows it to feel bigger than it is and the natural finishes form a tranquil center for the household. In the original structure of the home, both bathrooms now catch your attention with an injection of heavy detail. Whilst being a little art deco, the geometric details of the tiled feature walls are very on trend and unique, with every tile a different texture. With such a complex layout, Amanda had to work with the Tiler creating a dry lay of geometric tiles before installing them on the walls. Finished with contemporary tap ware both bathrooms are now places of interest in the home. To complete the transformation, the use of raw linen, soft furnishings and natural timbers helped to maintain that relaxed villa charm. The Devonport Villa now looks fresh, has a relaxed ambience and is slightly beachy keeping in tune with its surrounding neighborhood.

Better Apartment Living

L

iving life on shared grounds is not a far stretch from what one’s mother would teach their child about house rules. The biggest adjustment is living in such close proximity to those next door. There is nothing worse than an inconsiderate neighbour and living within such close quarters of a neighbour it is better for everyone’s sake that a mutual understanding and certain respect is paid to one another.

OUR TOP TIPS FOR LIFE IN AN APARTMENT… • If you can hear them, they can hear you. Without stating the obvious, be considerate when it comes to noise, especially when it comes to entertaining hours. Having friends coming over? Make a plan so you will all be leaving by 11pm. Like your surround sound movies? Whilst they might sound incredible to you, the person sitting behind your television in their living room probably doesn’t think as much. Place your speakers away from your “shared wall” or make sure it is properly insulated. Noise is also a factor to consider when using common areas. When walking from the lift, down the hall to your apartment, use soft voices. A quality apartment will mean quality building, the better the apartment the less likely noise will be an issue.

48

• The hallway is not yours, it is for everyone. Do not leave the likes of bikes, shoes and other personal items in other people’s way. It is messy and can be a safety risk. • Be careful when taking out the rubbish. If you have to travel through a communal area, make sure the bag is tightly wrapped and not leaving a trail of displeasing liquids and smells etc. • Parking can be a luxury in apartments and if you’re in the inner-city it can be difficult parking if you do not have an allocated car park. Unless agreed upon do not use any of your neighbour’s car-parks and don’t allow visiting guests to either. • Get to know your neighbour. You’re now living in a little community. You might see this person more than you see your closest friends so make an effort. One of the greatest benefits of apartments is their added security. You never know when you may need them or when they may need you so make it more comfortable for both parties by getting to know each other, whether it is a simple conversation at the front door every now and then or popping over for a wine.

Purchasing an investment property? HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW...

T

hinking of investing in a rental property? You’re not alone. Demand for quality housing in Auckland continues to outstrip supply. With some commentators reporting a temporary dip in the market, now is a good time to consider purchasing your investment property. Before you start traipsing around open homes, decide on your investment priorities. Are you investing for long term growth, or for rental return? Houses typically offer greater long term capital gain if chosen well, while apartments provide a higher yield for a lower purchase price – in other words, more rental return for your dollar. In both cases, you’ll need to hold the investment for at least two years or be deemed a trader (with tax implications). Apartments can also be easier to improve and manage, because exterior maintenance is taken care of by the body corporate. The body corporate is made up of all the individual owners, and sets the rules for the building. As with any neighbourly relationship, personalities are important, so be sure to review the Long Term Maintenance plan and read the AGM notes for the last three to five years. This is a great way to get a feel for the history of the building and the people involved. It’s also important to understand whether the apartment is freehold, or leasehold. With a leasehold apartment, you own

50

a share in the building but not the land, for which you will pay an annual rent. There are many different types of leasehold arrangement, so contact your local Quinovic office for expert advice on the potential risks and gains of your investment. With any property investment, location is key. As Auckland’s traffic congestion continues to grow, proximity to public transport links will be an important factor in capital gain, so be sure to investigate current and planned train links, bus express lanes and ferry services. For insider tips on location, you can’t beat specialist local advice. With four offices covering Auckland from east to west, the central city and North Harbour, Quinovic will get you sorted. Our specialist property managers can advise on rental returns, body corporate and leasehold arrangements and connect you with trusted advisors such as lawyers, valuers, mortgage brokers and real estate agents to help you make the right investment decision. Once that property title is in your hands, we can take expert care of your investment, handling everything from rent collection to inspection and day-to-day hassles.

COMO The Treasury REFLECTING THE BEST OF PERTH

A

ustralia’s Perth is known for it’s beautiful beaches, laidback lifestyle and a growing urban area. The city has evolved over the past decade and now boasts shopping, fine dining and modern bars. Indicative of its growth is its inclusion as one of the top 10 cities in the 2015 Global Liveability rankings by The Economist. COMO The Treasury reflects Perth is many ways, particularly by striking the right balance between the historic, romantic nature and modern luxuries. The building the hotel is in captivates at first glance. This is because it occupies a collection of late-Victorian stone and brick buildings, colloquially referred to as

64

the ‘State Buildings’. These have had a significant role in Perth’s history, serving as a post office, land titles office and treasury. And the hotel’s interior? The rooms are unique, but each one is large with a balcony and soft furnishings to match the relaxed ambiance. Small touches, such as a freestanding bath in each bathroom, set the COMO apart from other accommodation. There are also suites available, which offer stunning views and are decked out in what is expected of top luxury accommodation. To top it off, COMO offers guests top restaurants and an on-site bar. Post is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s wooden tables and large conservatory-like glass roof

complements the modern French inspired Australian cuisine on the menu. COMO’s other restaurant, Wildflower, utilises the local produce of West Australia and seasonal ingredients. Serving up contemporary European dishes, the rooftop dining space has meals to match the incredible view of Swan River. The sophisticated Treasury Lounge and Bar evenly rounds off the hotel’s dining experience, with comfortable leather armchairs for a few drinks with friends. COMO also hosts a yoga studio and a wellbeing spa, the Shambhala Urban Escape, where guests can experience massages and facials attended by worldclass staff.

WHAT MAKES COMO STAND OUT FROM OTHER HOTELS? The building alone that the hotel is situated in is unique. Furthermore, a large scale renovation has sought to keep the character of the structure without detracting from its appeal. Thus each room retains its own original quality, built on the bones of the original structure. The rooms are large and impeccably furnished, from the balcony rooms to the larger suites. To top off your stay, the dining experience provides everything you need from breakfast to an after-dinner cocktail. Wildflower is a must during your stay, with a menu that showcases the best of Perth’s local produce. For a stay that redefines luxury in all it’s applications, look no further than COMO The Treasury. From the building to the rooms to the carefully crafted dining available, no detail goes unnoticed. Moreover, the hotel showcases the best of Perth through its food to the historic building it is based in.

Experience the Wonder of Gold

AT THE PERTH MINT

One tonne gold coin

A

s one of Western Australia’s premier destinations, The Perth Mint offers a unique combination of attractions, exhibits and demonstrations, which enable visitors to experience all the magic, allure and wonder of gold. Established as a branch of Britain’s historic Royal Mint in 1899, The Perth Mint’s primary functions to refine gold from Western Australia’s eastern goldfields and strike gold coinage continue to this day. An institution of the illustrious gold industry for more than a century, The Perth Mint is dedicated to maintaining its heritage assets and history for the benefit of the community. It does so by hosting an award-winning Gold Exhibition which brings the history of Western Australian gold, and The Perth Mint, to life. The exhibit tells the story of the search for gold in Western Australia, from the first strikes in the Pilbara and Kimberley, through to the discoveries in the Eastern Goldfields, and the establishment of the famed Super Pit. As visitors journey through the darkened

66

exhibition halls, they will learn of the gold mining legends and events that have shaped the State, as modern multimedia presentations, historical images, and aged artefacts form the backdrop to an array of pure gold exhibits. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the Guinness World Record holding Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin, the largest coin in the world! Tipping the scales at a massive one tonne of 99.99% pure gold, this colossal coin measures nearly 80cm wide and is more than 12cm deep. As Australia’s gold icon, this monumental masterpiece is valued at more than $50 million and is showcased in all its golden glory on a revolving platform. Conveyed through its visitor experience, The Perth Mint also showcases its range of bullion and commemorative coin programs, and the variety of investment bars and other precious metal products it offers. Visitors can also view Australia’s most dazzling display of natural gold nuggets, wafers, and crystals including the 25.5 kilogram Newmont Normandy Nugget, the second largest gold nugget

in existence; watch molten gold being poured to form a gleaming solid gold bar in the original Melting House; handle more than $500,000 worth of gold bullion, and much more! An elegant retail Shop is located in the Mint’s original gold receiving room where visitors will discover a treasure trove of gold, silver, and platinum coins, natural gold nuggets, fine jewellery, precious stones and an exclusive range of giftware. The Mint is an authorised stockist of Argyle Pink Diamonds, Ellendale Yellow Diamonds, Kailis Australian Pearls, Coin Watches, Pandora Jewellery, Nomination, Cotton & Co, and Guess Jewellery. Tax free sales are available. Visitors will also welcome the opportunity to relax and reflect on their time at the Mint while enjoying light refreshments in the alfresco dining area of the courtyard café, superbly framed by a replica turn-of-the-century miners’ campsite. There’s something for everyone at The Perth Mint.

All or Nothing Circa Theatre celebrates its 40th anniversary with a brand new production of Shakespeare’s stunning tragedy King Lear. Acclaimed Shakespearean director Michael Hurst takes the helm while the title role is played by one of New Zealand’s theatre legends, Ray Henwood. Four hundred years after Shakespeare’s death, Hurst, renowned for his compelling interpretations, throws a unique lens over the story, describing it as “a lean and muscular play that demands the utmost of its actors.” There will be no hiding, no tricks, just high-octane acting in a timeless landscape of despair. circa.co.nz | +64 4 801 7992

Experience Hawke’s Bay by bike Last autumn my family and I had a weekend away in the Hawke’s Bay and, apart from the incredible accommodation, my most memorable part were the biking trails. The scenery was spectacular! We stopped for coffee at this gorgeous caravan at Bivvy Vineyard then lunch at the divine Black Barn Bistro (google them!). We made a real day of it and would happily go back to do it all over again. Island romance on Waiheke Island There is no shortage of beauty on the island, whether it be the stunning views, bluest water and golden beaches, the winery’s and their fine dining restaurants or the luxury real estate. Somehow, the island has a way of making you feel special. It was also the obvious choice of location for my upcoming wedding

Food & Wine – The Annual Bluff Oyster Festival | Saturday 21 May This iconic event, and popular choice for the owner of a matured palette (and Tim Shadbolt fan’s) is held mid oyster season, meaning the shell-fished delicacy is on tap. Also it’s a great social occasion with friends to taste some local delicacies and craft beer, plus there’s a live band to get you up and dancing after the right amount of wine matching. The NZ Golf Open hosted in Queenstown | 10 – 13 March I’m no golfing-guru, but when it comes to the NZ Open I love to be a part of the action and the electric atmosphere. The sculptures at The Hills are reason alone to go but there’s also a fantastic welcome party, plus the ongoing festivities at the 19th hole to keep you entertained. This is where all the non-golfing nuts hang out with its festival like feel of stalls and live acts. Restaurant Review Whitebait “During a recent trip to New Zealand’s best little city, Wellington, we dined at Whitebait, found on Clyde Quay Wharf. Winner of Cuisines “Good Food” Best New Restaurant in 2015, it certainly lived up to its credits and high expectations. With a calm ambience reflective of its surroundings on Wellington Harbour, so did the food. With a big emphasis on the best and freshest ingredients, owner and Executive Chef Paul Hoather’s focus on organic produce and sustainable fishing practices are some we wish were more common and rang true throughout all the exceptional dishes. Exceptionally fresh, delicate seafood, bright produce, punchy flavours and carefully crafted plates made for a dinner to remember.” – Editor, Vanessa Green | white-bait.nz

The selection extends to the bottles with an even wider variety of styles including some international options. The ever-increasing selection provided by independent breweries in New Zealand, ensures people can challenge their taste buds. The interior fit-out by Brand Agency ‘String Theory’ elicits visions of pioneering New Zealand with a focus on copper fittings and timber walls. Seating booths feature steel and wood with soft furnishings, and exposed light fittings control the ambient mood. 16 TUN has a full service kitchen serving New Zealand food, which the chefs match perfectly with the wide selection of beer. There are ‘half tun’ options for those with a less robust appetite with the ‘full tun’ comprising something more substantial. In the half tun category look for Kiwi treats such as Ruakaka paua fritters, Alpine Origin Merino lamb, Kumara fries and a range of sliders including pork, fish and beef. Burgers, ribs, fish and chips and several vegetarian-friendly dishes are among other items on the full tun menu.

Authentic yet Modern Beautiful yet Durable

ASIAN FOOD REPUBLIC’S LATEST COLLECTION

F

ood these days is virtually just as much about flavour as it is about style and presentation. We continue to see the likes of Master Chef and their drama’s of “plating up” take over our television. Tools and techniques are forever evolving and even our local Thai joint now dresses their stir fry’s with edible flowers -turning a plate full of food into one of art. A recent study completed by the University of San Diego, and Saint Joseph’s University of Philadelphia proved that the act of photographing your food can actually make it taste better. Thanks to the likes of Asian Food Republic’s latest collection of Japanese tableware, creating Instagram-worthy dishes can now be effortless and has us “food-porn” indulgers buzzing. We can all agree that if our food looks good it tastes better and one thing is for sure, this beautiful tableware with its Asian flare, does just that. Beautiful deep noodle bowls, shallow rectangle plates, unique serving dishes and sake canisters are just some of the pieces hand-picked by the team from Asian Food Republic. Ideal for both commercial use and in the comfort of your own home, the timeless assortment of Japanese plates, bowls and much more has something for everyone. Handmade in Japan, in various private family kilns, the collections may be best recognised from their use at popular Wellington restaurant Dragonfly and one of Auckland newest eateries White and Wong’s. Chic and practical, we find ourselves asking why you would opt for standard white dinner plates. Boring and common, we couldn’t agree more with Asian Food Republic, who pose “why put beautiful food on ordinary plates?” For retail and wholesale enquiries contact asianfoodrepublic.co.nz. A selection is also available online from orient-nz.com, at all Farro Fresh stores in Auckland and Moore Wilsons Wellington.

The Lighter Alternative ...THAT DOESN’T COMPROMISE ON TASTE

A

s a society, we can be proud of our progress and focused determination towards a healthier lifestyle, specifically in terms of diet and nutrition. In the last few years there has been for many of us a total shift in how and what we consume on a daily basis. As individuals we are putting in more time and effort to making healthier choices and luckily for us this is rapidly becoming easier with the influx of nutritionally rich and calorie-reduced products in our home country and across the ditch in Australia. A prime example is the latest product from Heineken currently enjoying success in the New Zealand market. The

88

worlds most international premium beer and leader in New Zealand’s premium beer category, Heineken successfully launched Heineken Light in late 2015 which is proving itself to be the preferred beverage for many, and is already ranked as the number two choice of all low alcohol (1.15-2.5%) beer options available in supermarkets. With nearly half the calories of standard beer, it could easily be assumed that it has half the taste. But trust us when we say one thing is for sure, Heineken Light does not compromise on flavour. With a superior taste profile, brewed using all malt to provide a flavorsome foundation, it is complemented with special floral and citrus notes, along with a light bitterness.

Heineken Light is fermented using Heineken’s proprietary ‘A’ yeast and a unique long fermentation process that develops that full flavour and mouth feel. The launch of the 2.5% beer also provides us with the perfect accompaniment for any social occasion and with the latest drink driving legislations, Heineken Light is not just a flavorsome option but a sensible one. With the popularity of low alcohol beer rising, faster in fact than craft beer, it is no wonder this summer we saw Heineken Light as our top accompaniment for the barbeque. Available in supermarkets nationwide, the new range is an Eye ‘must try.’

Situated in the busy corporate scene just off Victoria St West, the Melbourne inspired laneway boasts a number of flourishing cafes and eateries. However, none that provide the excellent dining options and wide range of wine available at Vikki Lane Bar & Kitchen. The establishment caters to a wide range of customers. From those seeking coffee in the morning and bite to eat, to a beautiful sit down lunch or dinner. From tapas to larger meals, there is something for everyone. The ambiance in the establishment is one of comfort, as the place provides a great date night while still catering to its Friday night regulars. Proper Chips Please... HOW HARD CAN IT BE

A

cross all seasons, there’s nothing New Zealanders like more than a gorgeously cooked fish paired with chunky fries. To be honest, fries paired with virtually any dish has become a staple side for many diners. Nowadays, the humble fish and chips is served in menus as a meal on it’s own - with a price that implies high quality ingredients. Moreover, chips in all forms is provided as a side or an entree, be it skinny chips, hand cut or potato skins. Unfortunately, the days where every cafe and corner store served hand cut chips has been replaced with many choosing to use frozen chips. Why? Ultimately, the cost-savings aspect wins out, as does the convenience. However, this has caused controversy in recent years due to research into what these chips contain. A 2012 study from the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry revealed that the high content of the chemical Acrylamide could be detrimental to your health and even carcinogenic. According to the American Chemical Society, acrylamide forms naturally during the cooking of many food products. However, it is the frozen chips supplied to many restaurants that contain high

96

levels of the chemical. This is because these fries arrive sliced, dried and par-fried, a process of partly cooking them so they are crisp on the outside but remain raw on the inside. This allows restaurants to use only a minimal amount of time to cook the fries for customers. While the study does not advocate for avoiding frozen fries all together, it started a debate surrounding ways to reduce acrylamide in our food. As a consumer, there are ways to ensure your fries are the quality you expect i an eatery and are paying for. In a restaurant or cafe, always ask for fresh fries. Moreover, ask your waiter or waitress whether the chips are made from freshcut potatoes or are frozen fries. You could be paying for frozen fries rather than the restaurant quality ones implied by the menu. Restaurants that do use frozen fries need to ask themselves this question. If so much effort, time and commitment is spent on the decor, menu and front of house - why cut corners with your fries? As consumers become increasingly aware of the difference in taste and quality, it is restaurants that provide quality in all aspects of their menu that will stand out.
