Xi meets with Macao SAR chief executive...

Xinhua 23 Dec During the meeting, Xi heard a report from Ho on Macao's current situation and the Macao SAR government's work.

Noting that Macao celebrated the 22nd anniversary of its return to the motherland on Dec 20, Xi extended festive greetings to all compatriots in Macao.

Xi highlighted the work of Macao over the past year in maintaining the sound momentum of stability and development, effectively taming COVID-19, achieving gradual economic recovery, and successfully completing the election of the seventh Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR. The central authorities fully acknowledge the work that Ho and the Macao SAR government have done, Xi said.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Macao society has gained a clearer understanding of existing problems in the region's economic structure and deeper reflections on its future development, Xi said.

The motherland will always act as a strong support for Macao in maintaining prosperity and stability. The central authorities will firmly implement the principle of "one country, two systems" and support Macao in appropriately diversifying its economy, Xi said.

He urges concrete measures to boost agricultural production, supply President Xi Jinping has reiterated the need to stabilize the fundamentals of the agricultural sector and ensure the nation's food security, saying that China should achieve assessable outcomes in growing more soybeans and other oil crops.

Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, called for more concrete measures and stronger implementation to guarantee stable agricultural production and supply and steady growth in the sector and rural areas.

Xi's remarks were published on Sunday as the two-day Central Rural Work Conference, which outlined China's rural development plans for the coming year, was concluded in Beijing.

While addressing a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Xi emphasized that ensuring the supply of primary products is a major strategic issue and the Chinese people must have firm control over their own food supply.

He highlighted the importance of selfreliance in food security, saying that Party and government officials must assume the same responsibilities.

It is important to ensure the acreage of arable land and level of food production in major grain production areas as well as other areas, he said.

Xi underscored that the requirements for the protection of arable land must be further clarified to ensure that China's total of 120 million hectares of farmland is a reliable figure and that all of the farmland is fertile.

He highlighted the importance of adjusting crop structure and ensuring the security of the supply of pork and vegetables.

The president said that the consolidation of poverty alleviation outcomes is the premise for rural vitalization, calling for unrelenting efforts in this regard to improve the lives of residents who have just shaken off poverty.

It is important to move forward the alignment between poverty reduction efforts and rural vitalization to prevent a large-scale reemergence of poverty, he said.

Premier Li Keqiang said at a State Council executive meeting before the conference that the nation must adopt unremitting measures in the production and supply of grain and key agricultural produce.

He called for greater efforts to stabilize grain acreage and increase the production of soybeans and other oil crops, saying that the supply and steady prices of agricultural production materials must be guaranteed.

It is important to carry out the strategy to enhance the potential for grain production with measures to stabilize the area of farmland, improve agricultural technology and strengthen farmland protection, he said.

Li also called for measures to improve rural governance and the living environment in rural areas and to continue refining rural infrastructure and the level of public services.

The conference, which brought together ministerial officials and officials from different provincial areas, called for steps to stabilize grain acreage next year and expand the production of oil crops to ensure that China's grain output can be stabilized at a level of 650 billion kilograms in 2022.

China's grain output reached 682.85 billion kg in 2021, up 13.4 billion kg from last year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Xi's recognition gives HK confidence a boost President Xi Jinping's recognition of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government's work this year has boosted the city's confidence about its future and pointed the direction for its development, people from various sectors said.

On Wednesday, Xi gave full recognition to Hong Kong's new electoral system and the SAR's effort to integrate with national development, after Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor presented him with a report on the progress of her government's work over the past year.

end on June 30. It was also the first face-to-face meeting between Lam and Xi in Beijing in two years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Agreeing with Xi's comments, Lam called the electoral revamp a "necessary" move to improve Hong Kong's democratic system.

Xi hails impact of Party history learning campaign

Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, has called for consolidating and expanding the achievements made in the yearlong campaign of Party history learning and education in order to firm up confidence in pursuing the development path with Chinese characteristics.

Xi, who is also China's president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remark in a recent instruction which was released on Friday at a meeting in Beijing to review the campaign of Party history learning and education.

Xi stressed that the launching of the Party-wide education campaign was a major strategic decision by the CPC Central Committee to open up new prospects for the cause of the Party and the State from the new starting point of the centenary of the founding of the CPC. He recognized the marked effects

and major achievements that the campaign has had, saying that all Party members and officials had received profound political, ideological and intellectual education, and that the Party's creativity, unity and ability to struggle have been greatly improved.

China, Germany show the way to mutually beneficial cooperation China Daily 23 Dec

Xi Jinping and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday has injected new vitality into China-Germany, and possibly China-European Union, relations.

As the world's second- and fourth-largest economies, China and Germany have developed a strong bilateral relationship in trade and investment, with China being Germany's largest trade partner since 2015, and Germany becoming China's fifth-largest trade partner country last year.

German enterprises, such as Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Daimler, Siemens, Bosch and Adidas, have become household names in China. And SinoGerman cooperation has benefited not just the two countries but the world beyond as well, by helping create jobs, boosting their economies and reviving the global economy given the highly integrated global supply chains.

Duisburg, a city in western Germany, which I visited last month, is an apt "showcase" for such cooperation. The world's largest inland dry port has become the most important hub of ChinaEurope freight trains linking Chinese and European cities. Which, incidentally, is just the beginning of the huge potential that can be tapped, according to the officials and business leaders I interviewed there.

As former Hamburg mayor and former German finance minister and vicechancellor, Scholz is a pragmatic leader, and understands well the benefits of Sino -German cooperation. That's is why he has his fingers crossed for an early ratification of the China-EU Comprehensive Agreement on Investment. It took the two sides seven long years to conclude

the negotiations on the agreement in December last year.

Unfortunately, the European Parliament has put its ratification on hold due to the tit-for-tat sanctions which started with the EU imposing sanctions on China in March.

Yet Scholz is not the only leader wanting to see the investment agreement ratified.

In June, European Council President Charles Michel defended the agreement, saying it is a "huge step in the right direction". And in an interview aired on Wednesday, Sabine Weyand, EU director-general for trade, called it "a good agreement" that will benefit EU businesses, and hoped the ratification process will be revived soon. She also spoke positively about China's 20 years as World Trade Organization member.

But some members of the European Parliament have politicized and hijacked the investment agreement at the cost of EU businesses, especially those hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indeed, China and the EU and its member states don't see eye to eye on some issues given their different cultures, histories, political systems and development stages. But most EU and Chinese leaders believe open dialogue and engagement based on mutual respect are a better way to address even contentious issues than disengagement, imposing sanctions on each other and launching smearing campaigns.

Although many politicians in Washington have adopted the latter approach, despite it being counterproductive, to

deal with China which incidentally has intensified Washington's zero-sum geopolitical rivalry with Beijing, Germany and the EU should not tread that mutually destructive path, for it could lead to a new Cold War. Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess's remarks on Monday reflect the pragmatism shown by many German politicians and business leaders. Diess said: "We need more cooperation and presence in China, not less! It would be very damaging if Germany or the EU wanted to decouple from China."

The fact that previous German chancellor Angela Merkel had been the most respected global leader for years is proof of her successful economic policy and diplomacy. In this regard, Scholz's pledge that he will continue Germany's established foreign policy is good news for Sino-German relations, China-EU relations, as well as international relations.

The potential for cooperation between China and Germany is huge, as is evident from the phone talk between Xi and Scholz — the potential extends from renewable energy and digital technology to nuclear non-proliferation, combating climate change, containing the pandemic and upholding multilateralism.

I'm sure there are a lot more areas China and Germany can cooperate on and learn from each other. That was also the message from Tuesday's phone talk between the Chinese and German leaders.

Chinese taikonauts will carry out more EVAs which are more complex to provide strong support for the successful completion of the construction and the stable operation of the space station, the CMSA added.
