Disolver la imagen, un juego de poder | fiorella Resenterra

El Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo (MADC) ha procurado a lo largo de su gestión mantener un balance en su agenda expositiva anual; por tanto, incluye a artistas jóvenes cuyo cuerpo de obra es coherente conceptual y técnicamente. Javier Calvo lleva siete años abordando de manera sistemática y articulada temas que son compartidos por el Museo y que son pertinentes dentro de la realidad nacional; es así como se le extiendé una invitación desde el 2012 para realizar una muestra individual en las salas 2 y 3.

La memoria, por su parte, es también un hilo conductor protagónico en su trabajo. El artista elabora los mapas conceptuales con la misma vehemencia con la que luego busca desaparecerlos; ese desvanecimiento de las imágenes y la disolución de sus formas es el mismo mecanismo que en otros ámbitos, se emplea para fijarlas colectivamente. En el acto de repetir -en esa búsqueda de sucesión continuadeteriora la imagen como una metáfora de construcción de la “historia” que después se permea a los colectivos. La memoria se diluye y se vuelve a concretar a lo largo de los textos desgastados, en las complejas relaciones entre los archivos y los datos; todos estos, herramientas de la historia.

La información se almacena, se procesa, se interpreta y luego se exterioriza, se libera forzosamente en nuevos contextos estigmatizados, filtrados y contaminados.

Calvo es un artista que se asume -y aborda su obra- como centroamericano. Desde esta postura, cuestiona cuáles son las relaciones de Costa Rica con el resto de la región y cuál es la relación entre “centro” y “periferias”. Reflexiona desde la noción de Centroamérica como región geopolítica, como un espacio inestable y en constante transformación. Se aproxima desde el sarcasmo con la “Centroamericanización”, estudia los juegos y las relaciones de poder desde diversas perspectivas con el objetivo de problematizar sobre nuestras construcciones sociales como región. Como el propio artista explica: “Mi trabajo está condicionado por el concepto del territorio, este visto desde un sentido político, la distribución del territorio y las implicaciones sociales y culturales que estas implica; es decir, de la manera en como ordenamos el mundo y sus particularidades que producen, este idea se ha extendido al “territorio” físico, del arte y del a conciencia del individuo. En toda mi producción se mantiene como denominador común una tensión entre las partes, entendiendo que cuando se divide un territorio, queda un lado y el otro lado; es decir, nosotros y los otros, esta tensión se expresa a través de problemas del poder, de la identidad y del arte mismo como un fenómeno en el que convergen todas estas ideas”.

El cuerpo del artista es un espacio de búsqueda constante.

La corporalidad funge como instrumento para evidenciar el desgaste sufrido y reflexionar -otra vez- sobre el tema del archivo y la memoria histórica, el cambio. El registro realizado entre pecho y espalda, la muda de piel y el desprendimiento de las capas retoma la idea de disolución y repetición.

Interesa de manera particular, cómo el artista utiliza múltiples lenguajes: la fotografía, la escultura, el performance, el dibujo, la acuarela, y la instalación. Así como, hace un giño a las nuevas tecnologías utilizando GPS y teléfonos celulares.

Sobre todo, se inclina a implementar medios más sensoriales por lo que hay una gran presencia de piezas sonoras y gestuales. En general, es determinante la importancia que se le brinda a la obra interactiva para establecer relaciones entre artista/obra, espectador/artista, espacio/obra, lo cual obliga a los espectadores a asumir una postura, a veces crítica ante la obra, el visitante siempre juega un papel activo.

A través de sus obras, Calvo realiza un análisis crítico sobre las identidades nacionales y regionales; en esa neurosis plantea cartografías nacionalistas y consigue dibujar un atlas sobre el mito de la “blanquitud” en Costa Rica. Estas construcciones y vínculos finalmente desembocan en interpretaciones personales de imaginarios políticos.

La reflexión a partir de nociones de identidad, el poder y el territorio, son algunas de las líneas de investigación más recurrentes dentro de la obra de Javier Calvo.

con el Otro. El cuerpo del artista se convierte entonces, en un espacio que permite ser un campo de experimentación y significación, pero también de conflicto.

Lenguajes como el performance, el video, la instalación y la fotografía, sirven de medio para hacer preguntas como: ¿Qué es ser centroamericano? o ¿Cómo es entendida Centroamérica y sus relaciones? La problemática en torno a la configuración de Centroamérica como una idea de región, re-direcciona la mirada hacia aspectos políticos, económicos y culturales. En esta línea, obras como “Quiero ser un buen centroamericano”, en donde la relación personal con estereotipos comunes, replantea la identificación con una idea de unidad regional.

La precepción de este Otro es relativa, la identificación del sujeto varía según los contextos. La imposición a partir del predominio de un color, retoma temas que parten desde el período de la Conquista Española en América, en donde la religión, las divisiones sociales y el estigma, son aspectos que penetran, incluso de manera forzada en la sociedad. En esta línea son relevantes piezas como “El blanco es relativo”, “Las tres carabelas” o “Dis-“.

Unos de los temas más trabajados por Calvo, es precisamente el mito de la blancura, y es aquí donde el artista entiende el blanqueamiento no solamente como un acto físico o genético, sino también político. Esto lo vemos claramente en obras como “Presbere” o “Degradación”.

Sin embargo, una pieza como “Memoria colectiva”, en donde se presenta un mapa pequeño recortado del libro producido por Teorética titulado: “Virginia Pérez Ratton.

Travesía por un estrecho dudoso” y perteneciente a Rolando Castellón, se plantea desde otro ángulo hacia ese mismo concepto de unidad centroamericana.

La concepción del país como una sociedad blanca, configurada entre los años 1880 y 1890 por los políticos e intelectuales liberales, fue una de las bases que sirvió durante la mayor parte del siglo XX para explicar la excepcionalidad de Costa Rica, sobre todo su diferencia frente a sus vecinos centroamericanos.1

Distintas aproximaciones en torno a los conceptos de escalas espaciales, lo que es local y lo que es global, se hacen presentes como una inquietud constante. La idea del poder a partir de los espacios de representación, se mezcla con la exploración de las concepciones de “centro y periferia” y las relaciones sur-norte, dentro de escenarios geopolíticos. Aquí, obras como “El centro siempre está en el centro” o “Solo yo”, juegan precisamente con este tema.

El tema del color es tocado también por el artista a partir de su interés por las políticas de blanqueamiento desarrolladas por el país, como lo fueron el erradicar las prácticas curativas indígenas o herbolarias durante el siglo XIX. El levantamiento del “cordón sanitario” que separaba a la población se dio hasta el año 1949, momento en el que la población negra del país pasó a “ser costarricense”.

Dentro del trabajo de Calvo, su propia piel es concebida a la vez como un territorio y sirve como medio para la búsqueda de una autodefinición persistente. Desde todos estos cuestionamientos, la persistencia de los estereotipos en el imaginario colectivo es una constante.

De aquí la necesidad de revisar y repensar las relaciones

de expresión jurídica de igualdad.2 Todos estos hechos históricos son revisados por el artista como base a una investigación metódica que da pie a sus obras.

En muchas de sus piezas el cambio de color en la piel es producido por exposiciones al sol. Dentro de su trabajo, el sol es concebido, al igual a como ha sido desde el inicio de la navegación y la cartografía, como uno de los primeros referentes de orientación. Un punto que funciona como eje rector de dirección, localización y por ende, de control.

En obras como “Ser o estar” o “Cartografía para una nube”, el tema del poder a partir del control en la ubicación se hace evidente. En esta última obra, el cielo trazado con paralelos y meridianos enmarca y encierra la totalidad del escenario.

La conquista de lo demarcado, del territorio dominado, se traduce también en la utilización del paisaje. Aquí el artista utiliza la acuarela como referencia a un pintura de la llamada Generación Nacionalista en la plástica costarricense, en donde se hace una revisión de lo identitario desde el arte.

De esta manera, “Nublados del día” o “Paisaje natural” enfatizan en estos puntos.

La técnica de la acuarela actúa al mismo tiempo, como un recurso para hablar del olvido, del desvanecimiento de un pasado que se destiñe y que permite repensar ideas de lo nacional, lo regional y lo global… La presencia de lo imaginario que se desvanece, así como la memoria.

En la obra, las esferas del péndulo de Newton, hacen referencia a las sociedades, al movimiento y funcionamiento de las ubicaciones geopolíticas. El centro siempre recibe el impacto de un lado y de otro. El objeto sólo estará estable, cuando no esté en uso.

In this piece the spheres of the Newton’s cradle are a reference to societies, and to the movement and functioning of geopolitical locations. The centre always receives the impact of one side and the other. The object is only stable when it is not in use.

Solo yo Videoperformance (quemadura solar sobre el pecho) Loop 2013

Al autor le interesa retomar la manera en que históricamente, Costa Rica se ha intentado autodefinir como una país caucásico. Así, el gesto de presionar con el dedo índice por unos segundos la piel quemada en que se ubica el país, evoca ese intento de blanqueamiento y trae a colación la necesidad de tratar de mostrarse distinto a los otros países vecinos; aunque paradójicamente se borren de momento, segmentos de su cartografía. Para el artista, la acción, también evoca, al acto religioso de golpearse el pecho en señal de culpa.

The author is interested in revisiting the issue of how Costa Rica has historically attempted to define itself as a country with a predominantly caucasian population. Thus, the gesture of pressing down with the index finger on the part of the burnt skin that represents the country evokes this attempt at whitening and draws attention to its need to try to appear different from the other neighbouring countries, even though, paradoxically, certain segments of its map are momentarily erased. The artist considers that the performance also evokes the religious act of beating one’s chest as a sign of guilt.

Esta obra abarca las ideas de identidad, sujeto y su ubicación en el mundo. El artista reflexiona desde un punto de vista ontológico, es decir “el querer ser”.

Esa idea de “ser” o “no ser”, se retoma desde su realidad como centroamericano, y desde la noción de etnia (lo blanco - lo no blanco), para explorar los estereotipos existentes que configuran el imaginario de región.

His approach to these concerns is ontological, i.e. it is related to “the desire to be”.

This idea of “to ​​ be” or “not to be” is revisited from the point of view of his reality as a Central American, and also focuses on the notion of ethnicity (white/non-white) in order to explore the stereotypes that shape the region’s imagery.

La técnica de la acuarela y la representación del paisaje, fueron puntos centrales del diálogo entre algunos artistas nacionales del siglo XX. Este ejercicio respondía a la necesidad de construir un discurso sobre la identidad. El artista retoma estos elementos para hablar de una identidad nacional líquida, haciendo una relación con la famosa frase centroamericana “Los nublados del día”.

This practice responded to the need to construct a discourse regarding identity. La obra enfatiza el gesto de mudar la piel que con una desaparición gradual del mapa, apunta hacia la noción de la “des-centroamericanización” no solamente física. El artista trabaja con el área de su pecho, por su importancia cívica: el pecho es el lugar donde descansa la mano al entonar un himno, donde se colocan las insignias, etc.

Posteriormente la grabación se volvió a pasar al televisor y nuevamente fue filmada. El proceso se repitió con cada video obtenido, agrupándolos en uno solo compuesto por 60 tomas produciéndose un deterioro gradual de imagen y audio.

The digital recording was played again on the TV and was filmed once more. The process was repeated with each video obtained, grouping them into one composite piece made up of 60 shots resulting in a gradual deterioration of the image and audio material.

Es posible que mientras algún espectador este usando un lápiz de un lado, otra persona con el afán de usar el otro lápiz, se lo quite de las manos o se establezca un forcejeo por su uso.

This device makes one of the pencils lift up when the other is pulled. It is possible that while a viewer is using a pencil on one side, another person who wants to use the other pencil forces it out of their hands or a struggle ensues between them.

DIS-LOCAL. Centroamérica en la piel: Notas sociológicas sobre un arte epidérmico | Sergio Villena

Mientras recorro las salas del MADC donde está instalada la exposición “Dis-local”, me viene a la mente el libro “La piel de Centroamérica. Una visión epidérmica de setenta y cinco años de su historia”. Se trata de un ensayo sociológico en el que Edelberto Torres Rivas, contra lo que podría sugerir el subtítulo, ensaya una profunda interpretación general de la historia de Centroamérica en su periodo de “modernización” (1930-2005), del cual él mismo ha sido testigo de primera mano.

Latina: Civilización versus Barbarie. En el imaginario nacional, Costa Rica encarna la Civilización, la cual -como lo hiciera notar el filósofo Alexánder Jiménez- adquiere una dimensión étnica metafísica: la blanquitud, la democracia, la paz e incluso el catolicismo. Desde esa mirada, que se corresponde con la “colonialidad del poder” a la cual refiere Aníbal Quijano, se atribuye al resto de Centroamérica el lugar de la Barbarie: la piel morena, la tiranía, la guerra y también la idolatría.

El libro del sociólogo guatemalteco y la exposición que nos ofrece el artista costarricense Javier Calvo, tienen en común su preocupación por Centroamérica. En conjunto, muestran que esa preocupación recorre toda la región, comprende distintas generaciones y diversas disciplinas o ámbitos de la actividad cultural. Sin duda, Centroamérica deja su huella en nuestra piel, aún en los que, como yo, no nacimos aquí, pero la hemos hecho nuestra.

Por ello, como escribe Calvo en su brazo, “el blanco es relativo”. No siempre lo costarricense encaja en ese molde.

Cuando así ocurre, se procede como Calvo en una de sus performances, en la que interviene el monumento al líder de la resistencia indígena en la colonia, Pabru Presbere: se le blanquea. Este gesto recuerda aquel que relata el historiador canadiense Steven Palmer en sus investigaciones sobre el blanqueamiento de la imagen del héroe Juan Santamaría, cuya representación mulata por Enrique Echandi suscitó profunda indignación entre los defensores de la excepcionalidad étnica metafísica costarricense.

Por eso he querido poner en relación esas dos miradas, el cual titularé “Centroamérica en la piel. Notas sociológicas sobre un arte epidérmico”. Calvo presenta un conjunto de trabajos que gravitan en torno a lo centroamericano, pensado, sentido, representado, desde Costa Rica. En la misma, ensaya múltiples tácticas deconstructivas de esas representaciones, sentimientos y pensamientos, dislocando la geografía y sus representaciones. “Dis-local”, pues.

Similar indignación causó la escultura de la madre costarricense, representada con rasgos indígenas y esculpida en granito por Paco Zúñiga. Por el contrario, la escultura Juan Ramón Bonilla, si bien titulada “Los héroes de la miseria”, sería considerada más adecuada al imaginario oficial de la maternidad costarricense. Por ello, ésta última, hecha en impoluto mármol blanco y con rasgos de campesina europea, comparte escenario con las musas en el vestíbulo del Teatro Nacional: la maternidad como una de las bellas artes!

Las representaciones de lo Centroamericano desde Costa Rica que deconstruye Javier, se materializan en mapas, paisajes y monumentos, todos ellos elementos que marcan los territorios, pero también nuestra piel. El medio que utiliza para esa tarea profanatoria es principalmente su cuerpo, su piel, pero también sus gestos. Utiliza la escritura, que al final de cuentas es también un gesto, trabaja sobre las huellas de la identidad, de lo centroamericano, sobre su propia piel.

El eje conceptual sobre el que se ha articulado históricamente la representación de lo centroamericano desde Costa Rica, ha sido aquél que ha caracterizado la historia de América

En esa misma representación, Costa Rica se autoatribuye una misión redentora sobre el resto de la región, como muestra el Monumento Nacional. En ese conjunto alegórico, Costa Rica es representada por una mujer que, como la libertad de Delacroix, guía al pueblo Centroamericano hacia su liberación. Esta es una de las representaciones

monumentales que profana Calvo: en un políptico pintado con acuarela, la representación heróica, que al inicio se encuentra bajo el “límpido azul de tu cielo”, al final ha sido cubierta por “los nublados del día”.

y desprendiendo, renovando la piel, recuperando su blancura inicial.

En fin, las distintas piezas que Calvo presenta en esta exposición parecen mostrarnos que, mientras persista la “colonialidad del poder”, Centroamérica será para los costarricenses una fatalidad, un fantasma que recorre y rasga su piel. Contra esa fatalidad, Javier parece apostar por hacer de Centroamérica un proyecto, sino un objeto de deseo: “Quiero ser un buen centroamericano”. Esa frasemanifiesto ha sido, precisamente, la idea fuerza de las últimas dos décadas en el ámbito del arte contemporáneo: “ser un buen [artista] centroamericano”.

Similar recurso de inversión utiliza Javier en su audio performance “Sin vos”, en la cual se escuchan al inicio los aullidos “de indio hollywoodense”, como aquellos los aficionados ticos a la Sele emiten en los estadios cuando el rival es algún otro equipo centroamericano: “uhuhuhuhuhuhuh”. Pero lo que en principio es un insulto, deviene poco a poco autoflagelación: el movimiento de la mano que marca la intermitencia del aullido, va intensificándose en su violencia, hasta convertirse en autocachetadas en la boca. El gesto insultante, de pretendida superioridad, termina convertido en autoagresión.

Pero eso no depende sólo de los centroamericanos, ya que el istmo -como lo muestra Edelberto Torres en el libro citado al inicio de este comentario- ha sido escenario de disputas geopolíticas entre grandes imperios, pero también de pequeños imperios. Ha estado atrapada en las disputas entre el norte y el sur, pero también entre el este y el oeste. Como lo representa Calvo en “El centro está siempre en el centro”, pese a recibir los golpes por todo lado y a hacer de correa de transmisión de los mismos, Centroamérica permanece siempre en el centro. Pero es un centro con minúsculas, no con mayúsculas: habitamos un centro que, sin embargo, parece estar siempre condenado a ser periferia, no sólo del Centro, sino también de la propia periferia.

En muchos de sus trabajos, Calvo hace uso de un recurso recurrente: la difuminación, la transitoriedad, lo efímero.

Pareciera que ha hecho suya la idea de que vivimos en una sociedad en la cual no existe más la seguridad ontológica que en algún momento parecieron ofrecer las identidades nacionales, pero también los deseos de integración regional, las cuales se habrían tornado cada vez más fantasmales, hasta casi desaparecer.

La videoperformance “Solo yo”, inicia mostrando el mapa de Centroamérica marcado nítidamente –mediante una quemadura por el sol- en el tórax del artista, el cual es intermitentemente blanqueado en la parte que corresponde a Costa Rica -la más cercana al corazóncon una sucesiva, casi obsesiva, presión que el mismo artista ejerce sobre su piel con el índice de su mano derecha. De esa manera, pareciera que la exaltación del patriotismo conduce siempre a la exclusión de Costa Rica de Centroamérica: somos menos centroamericanos cuanto más costarricenses nos reivindicamos.

Concluyo señalando un escenario futurista distópico, sobre el que es necesario reflexionar tanto desde el arte como desde las ciencias sociales: si prosperan todos los proyectos de construcción de canales interoceánicos que actualmente se están impulsando en Centroamérica (ver la nota “Los chinos abren el Caribe en canal”, de C. Salinas, P.X. de Sandoval y A. Murillo, publicada el 23 de junio de 2013, en El País), la región terminaría, como un pastel, troceada en pedacitos y dejaría de ser istmo pare devenir archipiélago. Así, cada país terminaría convertido en isla, a-isla-do de sus vecinos para siempre.

En “Dis” también se produce ese doble juego de “Centroamericanización” y “Descentroamericanización”.

Allí, donde la reducción a escala se asume como una acción arbitraria, comienza el verdadero ejercicio del cartógrafo: el ejercicio de su voluntad, de su oficio, de su poder. El reto mismo de la representación.

Sus piezas apuntan hacia esas áreas de tensión, generadas entre fuerzas contrapuestas y a su vez dependientes que conviven en un mismo tiempo y espacio. Es un artista que ha logrado no solo identificar la paradoja, sino que ha sabido trabajar cómodamente bajo estos principios para enunciar las tensiones que él mismo protagoniza en la sociedad que (lo) representa. Destaca entonces la voluntad de colocarse como individuo al centro de estos conflictos, explotando para ello diferentes recursos: el empleo de su cuerpo como soporte o la recurrencia a frases en primera persona que lo señalan como protagonista de su historia.

Para Javier Calvo, el desafío no radica en la elaboración de mapas geográficos como resultado final del proceso creativo, aunque en efecto, algunas de sus piezas más conocidas recurren a ellos como herramienta para la representación -más que territorial-, “temporal”, de un espacio que es el suyo, el nuestro. En sus obras, la geografía es solo una de las tantas construcciones que identifica, descompone y cuestiona. Este creador está más interesado en el lugar físico en tanto escenario social que lo define como miembro no solo de una colectividad local, nacional o regional, sino también profesional. Su meta radica en la consecución de un atlas social más que topográfico, una representación de lo subjetivo individual, costarricense y centroamericano.

Como creador sabe que puede desplazar los límites y con ello generar nuevas interconexiones sociales, muchas veces disfrutando del anonimato que le concede la tan cuestionada autonomía de la obra de arte y otras tantas exponiéndose a sí mismo como portador de significados. De esa forma no evade la responsabilidad sino que aprovecha su condición para proyectarla desde su individualidad a una colectividad que lo define y que él, como ente activo modifica. Esto lo sitúa al centro de importantes debates que evalúan la acción del artista como mediador y transformador de la sociedad a través del ejercicio del poder. También le otorgan a sus creaciones un carácter polisémico que lo hacen heredero de una tradición extrañamente poco privilegiada en Centroamérica: la del buen arte político. Dissolving the image; a power game | Fiorella Resenterra

The Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MADC) has, over the course of its administration, sought to maintain a balance within its annual exhibition schedule, and thereby includes young artists whose body of work is conceptually and technically consistent. Javier Calvo has spent seven years systematically addressing and articulating issues shared by the Museum, and which are relevant to the national context; an invitation was thus extended to him in 2012 for a solo show in halls 2 and 3.

Memory, for its part, is also an overarching leitmotif in his work. The artist produces the conceptual maps with the same forcefulness with which he then seeks to make them disappear; the blurring of the images and the dissolution of its forms is the same mechanism that is used to secure them collectively. In the act of repeating –in that search for continuous sequence –he deteriorates the image as a metaphor for constructing “history” which then permeates the collective. Memory is diluted and re-structured across worn-out texts in the complex relationships between archives and data, all of which are the tools of history. The information is stored and then externalized; it is forcefully released in new stigmatized, filtered and polluted contexts.

Calvo is an artist who considers himself and addresses his work as a Central American. From this stance, he questions Costa Rica’s relations with the rest of the region as well as the relationship between the “centre” and the “periphery”. His reflections are based on the idea of Central America as a geopolitical region, as an unstable space that is constantly changing. He uses sarcasm as an approach to “Central Americanization”, studying power games and power relations from different perspectives in order to explore problematic issues regarding our social constructions as a region. As the artist himself explains: “My work is influenced by the concept of territory viewed from a political perspective, the distribution of land and the social and cultural implications that this involves; in other words, the way in which we construct the world and the particular characteristics produced; this idea has been extended to physical “territory”, art and the individual conscience. In all my work the common denominator is the tension between the parties, based on the understanding that when you divide a territory, it creates one side and the other side; in other words, us and them. This tension is expressed through issues of power, identity, and of art itself as a phenomenon in which all these ideas converge.”

The body of the artist is a space for exploration. Physicality serves as a tool for revealing the damage suffered and reflecting –once again –on the subject of archiving and historical memory. The register he knocks back, and the shedding of the skin and of layers revisits the idea of dissolution and repetition.

Of particular interest is the way in which the artist employs a variety of artistic languages: photography, sculpture, performance, drawing, watercolour, and installation. There is also a nod to new technologies, in his use of GPS and cell phones. Above all, he tends to implement more sensory media, which is why there is a strong presence of sound and gestural pieces. In general, the importance given to interactive work in order to establish relationships between artist/work, viewer/artist, and space/work is decisive, compelling viewers to take a critical stance to the work; visitors always plays an active role.

On DIS-LOCAL. | María José Chavarría 1880’s and 1890’s by liberal politicians and intellectuals, was one of the fundamental aspects used during most of the twentieth century to explain the uniqueness of Costa Rica, especially its difference from its Central American neighbours.1

Reflections on notions of identity, power and territory are some of the most frequent areas of research in the work of Javier Calvo.

Artistic languages such as performance, video, installation and photography serve as a means to ask questions such as: “What does it mean to be Central American?” or “How is Central America and its relationships understood?” The problems surrounding the shaping of Central America as an idea of a region redirects the gaze towards political, economic and cultural aspects. Along these lines, works such as “I want to be a good Central American”, dealing with the personal relationship with common stereotypes, rethink the identification with an idea of regional unity. However, a piece such as “Collective Memory”, which is a small map cut out of the book produced by Teoretica entitled “Virginia Perez Ratton. Crossing a Doubtful Strait”, and belonging to Rolando Castellon, presents another angle on that same concept of Central American unity.

The issue of colour is also addressed by the artist from the point of view of his interest in the whitening policies developed by the country, such as the eradication of indigenous healing and herbal practices in the nineteenth century. The lifting of the “cordon sanitaire” that separated the population did not take place until 1949, when the country’s black population “became Costa Rican”.

It was not until 1992 that the indigenous peoples of Talamanca and on the border with Panama received their identity cards, a document of the legal expression of equality.2 All these historical facts are reviewed by the artist as the foundation of the methodical research on which his works are based.

In many of his pieces the change in the skin’s colour is caused by exposure to the sun. In Calvo’s work the sun is conceived, as it has been since the beginning of navigation and mapping, as one of the primary references for orientation. A point that serves as the guiding principle of direction, location and, hence, control. In works such as “Ser o Estar” or “Mapping for a Cloud”, the issue of power based on control in relation to location is made evident. In the latter piece, the sky traced with parallels and meridians frames and encloses the entire scenario.

Different approaches centering around the concepts of spatial scales –what is local and what is global –are present as an ongoing concern. The idea of power from the spaces of representation is fused with the exploration of the concepts of “centre and periphery” and South-North relations within geopolitical scenarios. Here, works such as “The Centre is Always in the Centre” or “Only Me” play precisely with this topic.

In Calvo´s work his own skin is conceived both as a territory and serves as a means to search for persistent self-identification.

From the point of view of all this questioning, the persistence of stereotypes in collective imagery is a constant. Hence the need to review and rethink the relationship with the Other. The artist’s body then becomes a space that can be a testing ground and field of meaning, but also of conflict.

The conquest of the demarcated, dominated territory is also reflected in the use of landscape. Here the artist uses watercolor as reference to a painting of the Nationalist Generation in Costa Rican visual arts, which reviews issues of identity through art. In this sense, “Storm Clouds of the Day” or “Natural Landscape” highlight these issues.

The perception of this Other is relative; the identification of the subject varies according to the context. Imposition based on the predominance of one colour, once more addresses issues based on the period of the Spanish Conquest in America, where religion, social divides and stigma are aspects that permeate society, even by force. In this sense, pieces such as “White is Relative”, “Three Caravels” or “Dis-” are relevant.

At the same time, the watercolor technique acts as a recourse for discussing forgetting, the disappearance of a past that fades and allows us to rethink ideas of what is national, regional and global...

The presence of the imagery that fades, as does memory.

One of the topics that Calvo explores the most is precisely the myth of whiteness, and this is where the artist understands whitening not only as a physical or genetic act, but also a political one. This can be seen clearly in works such as “Presbere” or “Degradation”.

DIS-LOCAL. Central America on the Skin: Sociological Notes on Epidermal Art | Sergio Villena

As I walk through the hall at the MADC where the exhibition “Dis-local” is presented, the book “The Skin of Central America. An Epidermal Approach to Seventy-Five Years of its History” springs to mind. It is a sociological essay in which Edelberto Torres Rivas, contrary to what the subtitle may suggest, presents an in-depth general interpretation of the history of Central America during its “modernization” (1930-2005), which he himself has witnessed firsthand.

has been that which has characterized the history of Latin America: Civilization versus Barbarism. In this nation’s mentality, Costa Rica embodies Civilization, which - as the philosopher Alexander Jimenez pointed out - acquired an ethnic metaphysical dimension: whiteness, democracy, peace and even Catholicism. Based on this outlook, which corresponds to the “coloniality of power” that Anibal Quijano refers to, Barbarism is attributed to the rest of Central America: dark skin, tyranny, war and idolatry.

The book by this Guatemalan sociologist and the exhibition offered by the Costa Rican artist, Javier Calvo, share their concern for Central America. Together, they show how this concern is a common thread running through the region, involving different generations and diverse disciplines or areas of cultural activity. Without a doubt, Central America leaves its mark on our skin, even on that of those who, like me, were not born here but have made it ours.

Thus, as Calvo writes on his arm, “white is relative.” Costa Rica does not always fit this mould. When this occurs, measures are taken, as Calvo shows in one of his performances, which involved the whitening of the monument to the leader of the indigenous resistance movement in the colony, Pabru Presbere. This gesture brings to mind that of the Canadian historian Steven Palmer in his research on the whitening of the mulatto representation by Enrique Echandi of the hero Juan Santamaria, which sparked profound indignation among the defenders of Costa Rican ethnic metaphysical uniqueness.

This is why I have wanted to relate these two outlooks, which I have entitled “Central America on the skin. Sociological Notes on Epidermal Art”. Calvo presents a series of works that centre around the subject of Central America, which are thought out, felt, and represented from a Costa Rican point of view. In these he tests multiple tactics that deconstruct these representations, feelings and thoughts, dislocating geography and its representations, hence the title “Dis-local”.

Similar outrage was caused by the sculpture of the Costa Rican Mother, represented with indigenous features, and sculpted in granite by Paco Zuniga. By contrast, the sculpture

by Juan Ramon Bonilla, despite its title “Heroes of Misery”, was considered more in line with the official image of Costa Rican motherhood. Thus, the latter, sculpted in pristine white marble with the traits of a European countrywoman, shares the stage with the Muses in the lobby of the National Theatre: motherhood as one of the fine arts!

The representations of what Central America means from a Costa Rican point of view, which Javier deconstructs, materialize in Maps, Landscapes and Monuments, all of which are elements that mark not only the territories, but also our skin. The medium used for this profanatory task is mainly his body and his skin, but also his gestures. He uses writing, which at the end of the day is also a gesture, working on the marks of identity, of what it means to be Central American, on his own skin.

In this same representation, Costa Rica declares its selfproclaimed redemptive mission regarding the rest of the region, as demonstrated by the National Monument. In this allegorical group, Costa Rica is represented by a woman who, as in Delacroix’s “Liberty Leading the People”, guides the Central American people toward their liberation. This is one of the monumental representations that Calvo desecrates: in a polyptych painted in watercolour, the heroic

representation, initially placed under the “limpid blue of your sky”* has, in the end, been covered over by “the storm clouds of the day”.

In short, the different pieces Calvo presents in this exhibition appear to show us that as long as the “coloniality of power” persists, Costa Ricans will continue to see Central America as a fatality, like a ghost that wanders along and tears at its skin. In response to this fatality, Javier seems to opt for making Central America not a project, but an object of desire: “I Want to be a Good Central American”. This phrase-manifesto has been precisely the main driving force and idea behind the last two decades of contemporary art: “To Be a Good Central American [Artist]”.

Javier uses a similar resource in his audio performance “Without you”, in which we hear the howls of the “Hollywood Indian” at the start, like those made by the Costa Rican Sele (national football team) fans in the stadiums when the opponent is another Central American team. However, what in principle is an insult gradually turns into self-flagellation: the hand movement that marks the pattern of the howl becomes increasingly violent in its intensity, up to the point where he hits himself repeatedly in the mouth. The insulting gesture of alleged superiority ends up resulting in self-harm.

In many of his works, Calvo uses a recurring resource: blurring, the transitory, the ephemeral. It seems he has endorsed the idea that we live in a society in which there is no longer the ontological assurance that at some point national identities appeared to offer, and that also hopes for regional integration have become increasingly remote to the extent that they have vanished almost completely.

However, this does not depend only on the Central Americans since the isthmus, as shown by Edelberto Torres in the book cited at the beginning of this commentary, has been the scene of geopolitical disputes not just between major empires, but also small ones. It has been caught in disputes between North and South, but also between East and West. As Calvo shows in “The Centre is always in the Centre”, despite taking beatings from all sides and acting as a “conveyor belt” between them, Central America always remains in the centre. But it is a centre with a small “c”, not a capital “C”: we inhabit a centre that, despite this, always seems doomed to remain a periphery, not only of the Centre, but even of the periphery itself.

The videoperformance “Only Me” begins by showing the map of Central America clearly marked by a sunburn on the artist’s chest, which is intermittently whitened in the part that corresponds to Costa Rica –closest to the heart –with successive, almost obsessive, pressure that the artist himself exerts on his skin with the forefinger of his right hand. Thus, it seems that the exaltation of patriotism always leads to the exclusion of Costa Rica from Central America: the more we reaffirm that we are Costa Rican, the less Central American we become.

I conclude by pointing to a dystopian futuristic setting, on which we must reflect both from the point of view of art as well as the social sciences: if all the interoceanic canal construction projects currently being promoted in Central America are successful (see the note “The Chinese split the Caribbean open” by C. Salinas, P.X. Sandoval and A. Murillo, published on 23 June, 2013, in El Pais), the region would end up being sliced into pieces like a cake, and would cease to be an isthmus in order to become an archipelago.

Thus, each country would be turned into an island – isolated from its neighbours forever.

When the reduction in scale is taken as an arbitrary action, the real work of the cartographer begins: the exercising of their will, their profession, and their power. The very challenge of representation.

His pieces centre around those areas of tension generated between opposing forces that are, in turn, dependent and coexist within the same time and space. He is an artist who has been able to not only identify the paradox, but who has also managed to find a way to work comfortably in accordance with these principles in order to articulate the tensions of which he himself is a protagonist in the society he represents, and that represents him. It is, therefore, worth highlighting his will to place himself as an individual at the centre of these conflicts, exploiting, to this end, different resources: the use of his body as a surface or referring to phrases in the first person, thereby setting himself up as the protagonist of his own story.

For Javier Calvo, the challenge lies not in producing geographical maps as an end result of the creative process, although some of his best-known pieces do, in fact, use them as a tool for the “temporary” rather than the territorial representation of a space that is his, and ours. In Calvo’s work, geography is just one of the many constructs that identify, decompose and question. The artist is more interested in the physical place as a social setting that defines him as a member not only of a local, national or regional collective, but also of a professional one. His goal is to attain a social atlas rather than a topographical one, a representation of both Costa Rican and Central American subjective individuality.

As an artist he knows he can push the boundaries and thus generate new social interconnections, often enjoying the anonymity afforded him by the frequently questioned autonomy of the work of art and many others, exposing himself as a conveyer of meaning. He thus does not evade the responsibility but takes advantage of his condition to project it from his individuality onto a community that defines it and that he, as an active entity, modifies. This places him at the centre of important debates assessing the actions of artists as mediators and transformers of society through the exercising of power. It also gives his work polysemous meaning by which

he inherits a tradition oddly neglected in Central America: that of good political art; no longer that of explicit criticism of the governments in power or the distorted economy of our region, but that of subtleties and resistance. He is, without a doubt, an artist who consciously takes on the displacement of discourses in this sense, expanding the concepts of politics to all the issues he represents in his proposals.

Dis-Local, thereby, as a proposal welcomed by the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MADC), constitutes an artistic and political-social manifesto. It is an exhibition with views of its own and a forward-looking approach, boldly contextualised within the artist’s sphere of activity. A political, social history and cultural atlas that shows, with the resulting scale of free will of the cartographer, which way and what direction we are heading towards.

The simple and surprising succinct manner in which Javier Calvo defines his works not only allows him to develop his discourses on race, identity, regional history and/or collective memory, but, viewed from a reading on another level, it also discloses his views on contemporary art practices or the taboos that still persist within his profession. He thus, to a certain extent, becomes a theorist who expounds his observations based on formal proposals employing excellent workmanship, with pieces that range indistinctly from minimalism to the conceptual, and in which he also experiments at will with the expressive potential of different media. He uses a variety of surfaces primarily in order to record his actions, which stand as the vehicle and fundamental motif of the work he produces. Javier Calvo Sandí nace en Costa Rica, el 18 de mayo

Javier Calvo Sandí, born in Costa Rica, on the 18th of May, 1981. He obtained his degree in art and visual communication with Summa Cum Laude at the School of Art and Visual Communication at Costa Rica’s Universidad Nacional, where he currently teaches.

He has participated in several artist residencies of La Espira/ La Espora and Cabra in Bello Horizonte and Sao Paulo, Brazil. He has been awarded, among others, with a prize at the 8th Edition of Valoarte, San Jose, Costa Rica, 2009, Honorable Mention, 6th Edition of Valoarte, San Jose, Costa Rica, 2007. Selected by La Espira/La Espora to represent Costa Rica in phase 2, Central American painting, phase 3, “The equivalent form” and phase 4, time and place.

Ha participado en varias de las residencias para artistas centroamericanos de La Espira/La Espora y de Cabra en Bello Horizonte y Sao Pablo, Brasil. Dentro de sus reconocimientos se encuentran Premio Valoarte VIII Edición, San José, Costa Rica, 2009, Mención Honorífica, Valoarte VI Edición, San José, Costa Rica, 2007. Seleccionado por La Espira/la Espora, para representar a Costa Rica en fase 2, pintura centroamericana, fase 3, “La forma equivalente” y fase 4, tiempo y lugar.
