Welcome

Greetings from the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce! The last two years have been incredibly difficult for our business community, as has been the case in most communities around the nation. Despite the numerous challenges thrown their way, our businesses have navigated through the pandemic with courage, grace, adaptability, creativity, and love. Yes, love. I can only imagine how much easier it would have been to throw in the towel and walk away. But the people who own and manage our local businesses love Macomb and the people they get to interact with each day. This is Macomb. We are a close-knit community that look after one another and welcomes new faces! You are sure to receive a friendly wave and smile no matter where you go. Throughout the pages of the Macomb Area Community Guide & Business Directory you will find everything you need to know about area events and attractions, education, healthcare, parks, recreation, and more. There is also a business directory, listed alphabetically and by category, to make it easier to find the business you are looking for. We want this guide to serve as a vital resource; whether you are a long-time resident, are new to the area, or are a visitor to Macomb. The Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce is a membership organization that serves as a link between area businesses, organizations, and the community. Our members benefit and thrive because of the strength and stability we provide

through advertising and networking opportunities, referrals, quality programming, events, and educational advantages. This guide is one of many of these benefits. The Chamber also runs a widely popular Chamber Gift Certificate program. We keep nearly $200,000 of local spending in our community every year! Gift certificates can be purchased in any denomination, they never expire, and make excellent gifts. You can purchase them at the Chamber office, MidAmerica National Bank, Citizen’s Bank, Fortress Bank, United Community Bank, and First Bankers Trust Company. I encourage you to explore what Macomb has to offer this year. There is exceptional shopping, top notch restaurants to suit any cravings, phenomenal parks, and a variety of events and activities throughout the year. Show our local businesses and organizations the same love they show our community each and every day. Wishing you the very best 2022!

Lauren Merritt Executive Director Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce

Welcome to Macomb I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Macomb, a great place to live, work, shop, and learn. We’re glad you’re here! If you are looking to make Macomb your new home, we have a great quality of life that we are anxious to share. Our neighborhoods range from new construction to turn-of-the-century Victorian homes and Macomb’s educational opportunities are outstanding. Our school district is committed to offering the highest quality education and Macomb is home to two institutions of higher learning: Spoon River College and Western Illinois University (WIU). WIU has a decade long tradition of being nationally recognized as a “Best Midwestern University”. Cultural and family-oriented events are scheduled year-round, both in our Historic Downtown and on WIU’s campus, for the entertainment of Macomb’s residents and visitors! Macomb is also home to one of the region’s premier medical facilities, McDonough District Hospital (MDH). The hospital has recently completed two significant projects designed to ensure quality medical care for our residents; an Emergency Department expansion as well as opening a new wing dedicated to Women’s Health and an enhanced Obstetrics/Birthing experience. MDH has a long, rich tradition of bringing quality and diverse medical care to Macomb and the surrounding area. We have an outstanding manufacturing base, which includes Pella Windows, NTN-Bower Corporation, and Yetter Manufacturing Corporation. If you are a prospective new business owner, we have several thriving and developing commercial corridors. Our Historic Downtown area is filled with a variety of shops and restaurants, making an attractive and friendly environment. Macomb, being the county seat for McDonough County, is home to the McDonough County Courthouse located in the center of the Historic Downtown square. Within walking distance of the downtown area is Macomb’s City Hall, the Amtrak Station, Western Illinois Museum, a recently expanded Macomb Public Library and historic Chandler Park, which is the setting for many of our annual outdoor events. We’re connected—both virtually and actually! We have great telecommunication and broadband services! We have a robust ground transportation connection via the 4-lane Chicago to Kansas City Expressway (IL110) as well as twice daily connection to Chicago via AMTRAK; an award-winning Mass Transit system Go West and an award-winning general aviation airport. If you are visiting Macomb, either for personal reasons or on business, please take time to browse through the local merchant’s shops, enjoy one of the many restaurants and contemplate how your visit might turn into an inquiry about a move to make Macomb - a picturesque, Midwestern community - your new home. There is a lot in store for Macomb as we continue to move forward and attract business and industry to the area. I hope you enjoy Macomb and come to appreciate its uniqueness and quality of life. Without a doubt, this is an exciting time to be in Macomb. I extend to you a heartfelt and enthusiastic WELCOME!! Sincerely,

Michael J. Inman, Mayor

visitforgottonia.com Conceived in 2018, the Macomb Murals Project was initiated by the offices of Visit Forgottonia/Macomb Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. Beginning with the inaugural dedication of The Old Dairy Mural, at least one new mural a year has been unveiled in and around Historic Downtown Macomb. This collection of artwork features colorful displays of rich community history and celebrations of vibrant pop culture to contribute to create an experience that is uniquely Macomb. Old Dairy Cafe Mural: The first of the mural series is a colorful display that pays tribute to both the history of Macomb, pop culture, and the Old Dairy Cafe itself. Western Illinois Museum Mural: The Western Illinois Museum is home to the nationally known muralist and Macomb native Tanner Woodford’s “What You Feed Will Grow” masterpiece, which stays true to his traditionally optimistic and typographical style. C. T. Vivian: Life of a Servant Leader Mural: In recognition of one of Macomb’s greatest legacies, the work to be displayed in the Summer of 2022 on Randolph/Carroll Streets, will honor the late civil right pioneer Rev. Dr. C. T. Vivian, a community legend and revered leading activist in The Civil Rights Movement. MBA 50th Anniversary Mural: In recognition of their 50th anniversary, the Macomb Beautiful Association mural will be unveiled in June 2022 on the Gelsosomo’s Pizza building. The design plan depicts a scenic rural farm setting and is to reflect the beautiful community and its many talented residents. Additionally, there is the urban inspired spray paint mural on the side of the building which houses The Study coffee house, adding a pop of color to the adjacent public, downtown parking area.

Faces of Macomb Lisa Ward Lisa Ward has been serving up Southern hospitality here in the Midwest for over 25 years and it all started with a boy. She opened Magnolia’s catering in March of 1998 and expanded to a fullservice restaurant in 2002. Her first 18 months, she and her nowhusband, balanced the entire business on their own. As events expanded, so did her staff. Eventually the Wards purchased a nice corner lot to make a new home for his business Two Dogs/Wilbur’s Mill and a new home for a brick & mortar called Magnolia’s Restaurant. Ward has a background in the hotel and restaurant industry. She got her start sporting that “cute” blue polyester jumpsuit and triangle hat, where most days were spent asking “Would you like fries with that?” With looks that included that blue suit, an old English puffy shirt at The Steak & Ale, and a cheerleader uniform and saddle shoes at Bentley’s 50’s-style night club; she now lets her staff have the final decision on any uniform. The economy and COVID have challenged the Wards, but she attributes her success to the great customers and friends she has made over the years. Ward remarks, “I am fortunate enough to have my clients turn into friends, which are the best friends I could ever hope for.” Ward feels that Macomb is so generous to her, and she tries to return the generosity. She aims to give back to the community by hosting events at Magnolia’s and The Forum in order to assist the community in raising thousands of dollars for various causes. She has served as three-year co-chair of the annual Farm to Table Event that benefits local FFA chapters, is an eight-year co-chair of The Crime Stoppers Lasagna Dinner, and is a five-year cook at the Cook for A Cause Event which raises money to support The Linda’s Fund – a local breast cancer foundation. If you were to ask her what her greatest accomplishments are, she would say that being Western Illinois University’s Honorary Alumni 2012, Macomb Business of the year 2020, and a Downtown Legacy Award winner from the City of Macomb are all titles she never dreamed she would ever get, but her greatest accomplishment is being married to the man that made all this happen by bringing her to Macomb.

Build Your Business Build Your Local Economy

The Macomb Area Chamber is an enthusiastic advocate of the “Shop Local” initiative knowing, that every dollar spent locally improves our roads, schools, and overall quality of life. • Our Chamber Gift Certificate Program, open to all Chamber members, ensures nearly $200,000 of gift giving stays in our local economy every year, generating sales tax to ensure adequate funding for infrastructure, education, and public works projects. • In additional to the “shop local” program, the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce has taken the local approach one step further. Enter, #keepitinmacomb! What exactly is “it”? It is everything! It’s a way of life and the culture on our streets, square, parks, and more. It is not only items you buy, but services you use, entertainment options, places you go, and how you choose to spend your time. It is anything you purchase or consume, tangible or intangible. However, and maybe more importantly, “it” is what we keep in Macomb when we choose to spend our money locally. Spending locally benefits education, transportation, health care, and public safety services like police and fire protection. #keepitinmacomb is the ultimate statement of community support. • We work closely in partnership with all area economic development organizations to promote Macomb and create a diverse and vibrant local economy.
