Our neighborhoods range from new construction to turn-of-the-century Victorian homes and Macomb’s educational opportunities are outstanding. Our school district is committed to offering the highest quality education and Macomb is home to two institutions of higher learning: Spoon River College and Western Illinois University (WIU). Conceived in 2018, the Macomb Murals Project was initiated by the offices of Visit Forgottonia/Macomb Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. Beginning with the inaugural dedication of The Old Dairy Mural, at least one new mural a year has been unveiled in and around Historic Downtown Macomb in which a Macomb Murals Tour has evolved. This collection of artwork features colorful displays of rich community history and celebrations of vibrant pop culture to contribute to creating an experience that is uniquely Macomb. Old Dairy Cafe Mural (210 S. Lafayette St.): The first of the mural series is a colorful display that pays tribute to both the history of Macomb, pop culture, and the Old Dairy Cafe itself. Directly parallel to the Old Dairy mural is artist Emily Roberts’ unique and environmentally friendly Be Kind to All mural (100th Block of W Washington St.). Inspired by the C.T. Vivian mural this positive message took over eight months to complete and was entirely created using recycled plastic bottle caps. Western Illinois Museum Mural (201 S. Lafayette St.): The Western Illinois Museum is home to the nationally known muralist and Macomb native Tanner Woodford’s “What You Feed Will Grow” masterpiece, which stays true to his traditionally optimistic and typographical style. C. T. Vivian: Life of a Servant Leader Mural (135 N. Randolph St.): In recognition of one of Macomb’s greatest legacies, the work displayed honors the late Rev. Dr. C. T. Vivian, a community legend and revered leading activist in The Civil Rights Movement. MBA 50th Anniversary Mural (221 N. Randolph St.): In recognition of their 50th anniversary, the Macomb Beautiful Association was unveiled in June 2022 on the Gelsosomo’s Pizza building. The design depicts a scenic rural farm setting and reflects the beautiful community and its many talented residents. Stronger Together Mural (405 N. Prairie Ave.): This communitypainted mural, displayed at Prairieview Townhomes, promotes the power and strength of diversity. Sports Corner Mural (124 N. Randolph St.): Depicting a largerthan-life version of a bookshelf filled with memorabilia, artist Bill Howard illustrates the history of regional athletics, gaming, sports, and leisure on the East side of Sports Corner.
It can be seen of the side of the Sports Corner @ 124. Veterans Memorial Mural (Murray St., Macomb): Artist Bill Howard displays a tribute to our American Military Veterans on the wall of Western Illinois University’s Hanson Field. Additionally, there is the urban inspired spray paint mural on the side of the building at 116 W. Jackson St. in Macomb; adding a pop of color to the adjacent public, downtown parking area

Economy - Their programs and tools enhance local, state, and national efforts to create vibrant economic ecosystems that provide opportunity for business, communities, and the Illinois workforce. Environment - Extension programs facilitate decision-making and discourse that balance the needs of agricultural producers against public interest in sustainable food production and preservation of the natural environment. Food - With target audiences ranging from small farm producers to global food manufactures to those who shop for and prepare meals for their families, Extension maintains a portfolio of resources to address issues of safety, security, and access throughout the food production, preparation, and consumption cycle. Health - They believe healthy families are an essential component of resilient communities, so their programs address critical issues like financial literacy, health management, and family wellness.

Macomb was first settled in 1829 on a site tentatively named Washington. Officially founded in 1830, it was given the name Macomb after General Alexander Macomb of the War of 1812. With a population boom brought on by the emerging railroad industry, Macomb is still a proud Amtrak community to this day bringing local and visitors alike to the heart of Downtown Macomb.
More than just a rich agricultural area or a vibrant university town, Macomb and the McDonough County region are filled with a vibrant history and notable figures. Macomb archives are packed full of stories of famous visitors, such as Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and Barak Obama, who have all made signifi-
cant stops in Macomb as part of their political careers. Macomb is known for our Midwest hospitality and there is no greater example of our hometown pride than Macomb native, minister, author, and civil rights pioneer, Rev. Dr. Cordy Tindell “C.T.” Vivian. A distinguished leader and organizer in the Civil Rights Movement, Vivian paved the way for future activists and opportunities for justice through sit ins, educational speeches, and a lifelong passion for equality. His likeness is commemorated on a 75-foot mural depicting his legacy, along with a city street bearing his name, and future plans for a community center and park at his childhood home. Besides hosting several dignitaries, Macomb is also a great place to play. Macomb born actress, writer, poet, inventor, and pioneering feminist, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Magie-Phillips created
what has now become the most popular board game in the world, known as Monopoly. Her original 1903 Landlord’s Game was later sold to Parker Brothers and has become a global sensation. Macomb has officially proclaimed May 9th, Lizzie’s birthday as “Lizzie Magie Day.”
Macomb is also a community with a unique sense of humor. In the late 1960s, a group of concerned citizens dubbed a sixteen-county section of west-central Illinois “Forgottonia” in protest of the lack of state and federal investment in highways and other infrastructure in the region.
What started as a tongue-in-cheek name grew into a satirical movement by the early 1970s, when Forgottonia leaders appointed a governor, selected a capital, and threatened secession so they could declare war, immediately surrender, and then petition for foreign aid. They even had their own flag: the white flag of surrender.
Thanks in part to these efforts, our region now enjoys a passenger train route to Chicago and an improved system of bridges and highways that allow for easier access to our little slice of Illinois.
Over the years, Forgottonia has come to stand for the deep connection the people of west-central Illinois feel to our region and the playful and irreverent refusal to let ourselves be forgotten.
These are just a few examples of the many people, places, and stories who have worked their way into the culture of
the community that is now called Macomb. We invite you to explore our city streets, rural areas, and famed landmarks to get the change to embrace the past and admire how it continues to shape our region for years to come.
McDonough County is named in honor of Thomas Macdonough who defeated a British squadron in the decisive naval battle of Lake Champlain in the War of 1812. The county has the unique distinction of forming a perfect square on a map, with Macomb in the center. With over 590 square miles; McDonough County includes the cities of Bushnell, Colchester, and Macomb; as well as the villages of Bardolph, Blandinsville, Good Hope, Industry, Plymouth, Prairie City, Sciota, and Tennessee. Each individual town, regardless of population, boasts their own charms and pride in their pasts.
