The challenges– childcare, education,healthcare, housingandspouse employment–aredirectlytiedtomilitaryfamilyreadiness, resilience, andretentionoftheforce.ThesefiveareaswereselectedbasedonfeedbackfrommilitaryfamiliesandsurveysconductedbyBlueStar Families, MilitaryOneSource, theMilitary FamilyAdvisoryNetwork,and otherorganizations.

ARLINGTON, Va.(AFNS)—Apanelofnearly30subjectmatterexpertsfromacrosstheDepartmentoftheAir ForcemetNov. 16atthe BasicResearchInnovationandCollaborationCenterinArlingtonand viaavirtualteleconferencingplatformtoconducttheSpark Tank2022 quarterfinals.

“Spark Tankisthedepartment’stakeonthetelevisionshow“Shark Tank”andisdesignedtorecognizethegreatworkourAirmenandGuardiansputintoovercomingperformanceobstaclesandmakingourservices more capable,” said WilliamGautier, Spark Tank director. “Thegoal of thequarterfinalsround wastonarrowthe184ideassubmittedforST22 downtothetop15ideasthatwilladvancetothesemifinals,” hesaid.

Onlythetop8%percentofideaswereselectedtocompeteinthesemifinalsscheduledfor Jan.6,2022.

Scholarshipsformilitary

FORTLEE, Va.—ApplicationsarenowopenfortheScholarshipsfor MilitaryChildrenProgramforacademicyear2022–2023.

Theprogram,nowenteringits22ndyear, recognizesthecontributionsofmilitaryfamiliestothereadinessofthefightingforceandcelebratesthecommissary’sroleinenhancingmilitaryqualityoflife. It’s administeredby FisherHouse Foundation,anonprofitorganization dedicatedtohelpingservicemembers, veteransandtheirfamilies.Thus far, theprogramhas awardedmorethan$21millionto12,312students, selectedfromapoolofnearly109,000applicants.

“Forthe22ndyearinarow, commissariesarehonoredtobeapartof aprogramthatprovidesthe childrenofmilitaryservicememberswith thisvaluablefinancialboosttotheirhighereducationgoals,” saidMarineCorpsSgt.Maj.MichaelR.Saucedo, seniorenlistedadvisortothe DeCAdirector.“We attheDefenseCommissaryAgencyagainextend ourthankstothe FisherHouse Foundationaswellasthegenerousindustrypartnerdonorsandothersthatmakethesescholarshipspossible forsomanydeservingfamilieseachyear.”

Fundingfortheprogramcomesfromcommissarybusinesspartners andothercontributionsto FisherHouse Foundationdesignatedspecificallyforthescholarshipprograms.

“FisherHouse FoundationisgratefulforourlongstandingpartnershipwiththeDefenseCommissaryAgency providing scholarshipsto theseverydeservingmilitarykids,” saidChairmanandCEOof Fisher House Foundation, Ken Fisher.“We arealsofortunatetohaveincredibledonorsthatarecommittedtohelpingmilitaryfamiliesthroughour scholarshipprogram.”

Selectionqualificationsarestraightforward.Requirementsinclude completingtheapplication;submissionofthestudent’sofficialtranscriptindicatingaminimumcumulativeGPAof3.0oraboveona4.0 scaleforhighschoolapplicants, orcollegetranscriptindicatingacumulativeminimumGPAof2.5oraboveona4.0scaleforstudentsalready enrolledincollege;anda500wordessay. Thesubjectoftheessayis

listedatthemilitaryscholar.orgwebsiteunder“ScholarshipsforMilitaryChildren.”

EligibilityfortheprogramisdeterminedusingtheDefenseEnrollmentEligibilityReportingSystemdatabase.Applicantsshouldensure thatthey, aswellastheirsponsor, areenrolledintheDEERSdatabase andhaveacurrentmilitarydependentIDcard.Theapplicantmustalso beplanningtoattendoralreadybeattendinganaccreditedcollegeor university, fulltime, inthefallof2022orbeenrolledinaprogramof studiesdesignedtotransferdirectlyintoafour-yearprogram.

Applicantswhoare awardedafullscholarshiptoattendacollegeor universityorreceiveanappointmenttooneoftheserviceacademiesor affiliatedpreparatoryschoolsarenoteligibletoreceivefundsfromthis program.Afullscholarshipisusuallydefinedasonethatprovidesfor paymentoftuition,books, labfeesandotherexpenses.

Forscholarship year2022-23, FisherHouse Foundation will award 500scholarshipgrantsof$2,000each.Theselectionprocesswillbegin immediatelyfollowingtheapplicationdeadlineof February17,at11:59 p.m.PST.

“Today wasanamazingdayandIgottoexperiencesomethingnew,” saidKhari Anglin,asenioratNewsomeHighSchool.“It wasincredibletoseehowthepilotsare abletocommunicateandworktogethertogetthejobdone.”

TheKC-135orientationflight waspartoftheAir ForceRecruitingService’s AviationInspirationMentorship(AIM)Highprogramwhichprovidesstudentshands-on flyingtrainingfromexperienced U.S. Air Force aviatorsandmentors.

These aviatorsandmentorsalsoprovidedthestudentswithinformationabout aviationcareers, flyingopportunitiesandtheirexperiencesasAir Force aviators. Beforetheflight,thestudentsweregreetedbyAir ForceGen.MikeMinihan,commanderofAirMobilityCommand,Maj.Gen.ThaddBibb, 18thAir Forcecommander, andChiefMasterSgt.Brian P. Kruzelnick,AMCcommand chief, whoexplained AMC’sglobalreachmissionandtheneedforAirmenwithdiversebackgroundsand experiencesthatarecrucialtoadaptingtofuturethreats.

“OurteamiscomprisedofpeoplefromallcornersofAmericasoforthestudents heretoday, IneedyouintheAir Forcetomakeusbetter,” Minihansaid.“Wehavea dutytomakeourcountrybetterandIneedyouintheAir Forcetohelpmakemebetterandtohelpmakemyteammatesbetter.”

AccordingtoMichaelMcAuley, HCSD chiefofstaff, havingtheopportunitytofly onaKC-135toexposehisstudentstopotential aviationcareersintheAir Force was trulyahighlightofhiscareer.

The changedecreasesPFEknowledgequestionsfrom100to60,and adds20Situational Judgment Testquestionsthatwerederivedfroma diversegroupofbehavioralscientistsandSeniorEnlistedLeadersfrom acrosstheAir Force.TheoverallpointsforthePFEwillnot changeand willstillmakeup100pointsofanAirman’stotalscore.

ForeachSJTquestiononthePFE,examineeswillreadthedescrip-

tionofasituationrelevanttotheirpotentialrankandduties, examine fourpossibleresponsestothesituation,andthenselectthemosteffectiveandtheleasteffectiveresponse.

Althoughtherearenostudyreferences availablefortheSJTquestions,AirmenshouldcontinuetofamiliarizethemselveswiththeAirmanLeadershipQualities, foundationalcompetencies, andassociated behaviorswhichwillprovideageneralframeworktoconsiderwhen respondingtothesetypesofquestions.

Usingasimilarvotingsystem,thepanelreviewedandscoredall29 ideasusingcriteriadesignedtoassesseachideafrommultipleperspectives:friendlydisruption,adversarydisruption,inspiration/culturaldisruption,andthelevelofseniorleadershipneededtoexecutetheidea.The scoringcriterialogictakesintoaccountatmosphericperspectivesthat traditionalvotingmethodsdon’tconsider. Manyimpressiveideaswere submittedthattouchedonallaspectsthecriteriaaddressed.
