Airmenfromthe6thMedicalGroup alongsideeducatorsfromthe VeteransHealthAdministrationparticipated in a JointEmergency Preparedness traininghere July11-12.
“Youcan’tputapricetagonthetrainingthat ourAirmenaregettinghere,” saidLt. Col. Brent Waldman,the6thMDGdentalflightcommander. “Whenitcomestoemergencymanagement, whetheritbeyour100thtimeoryourfirsttime, thereisalwayssomethingnewto learn.”
Thecourse wasajointcollaboration between the VHAandtheAir Force. Theparticipants weretrainedondentalemergencymanagement andspecialprocedures.
“The VeteransHealthAdministration wants tohelpmorewithactiveduty,” said Dr. Mary Sturgeon,adentistwiththeVHA.“Thistrainingisagoodopportunitytodothatandmaintainthereadinessoftheirownteams.”
Participantslearnedhowtoapplyprinciples ofmedicine, pharmacology, andphysiology to preventandmanageemergencies.

one championshipgame. Overthe 2024season,Nicks supportedher team with195yardson11catches, threetouchdownsanda league leading two non-kickconversions.
Growingup, Nicks wasan avid athleteandplayedbasketball from childhoodallthe waythroughhertimeinthe U.S. Air ForceAcademy. Twoyearsago, she wasapproachedtotry outfortheemergingWNFC.
Nicks wasabletoattendpre-seasontrainingwith her team,butduringthe2024season,trainedonherownduetobeing stationedat Patrick Space ForceBase, Florida.Hercoaches wouldsendherworkouts and critiques, andit wasuptoherto improvehergameandcontinueher conditioninginthegym.
Herdedication wasrewarded by hercoaches. Ina mid-seasongame againsttheteamtheywouldeventuallyplay for the championship, the TexasEliteSpartans, Nicks wasentrustedtoreceivea game-winning passwithlessthanaminute leftonthe clock, which secured themthe victoryandbroketheirrivals’unbeatenstreak.
Asanactive-dutymilitaryofficer, Nickshastoactivelybalanceher footballcommitmentswiththedutiesandresponsibilitiesofher U.S. Space Forcecareer. This season wasparticularly demanding forherasan out-of-state player.
“Iwouldbeonmylaptopattheairportandbeforegamesdoingtraining,” saidNicks. “I’mtaking leaveforfootball,butI’m teleworking and makingsurethings aresquared away. It was tough, but it keeps me sharp.”
Despitethedifficultyinbalancing the two, Nicks stilladvises others to followtheirpassionsoutsideofwork.
“Youneedtofeedyourbody, yourmindandyour spirit,” saidNicks. “Don’tgiveuponanyofthem—keeppushingandmake it happen.”
Inherdutiesasacybercrewcommander, Nicks credits herapproach toteam managementinthe645thCYStoherexperiencewithathletics.
“Beingtheseniorteammemberinsports has influencedmycareer andgivenmeateamworkmindset,” saidNicks. “Everyonehas ajoband thebestthingyoucando is to learnhowyou,andthepeoplebeside and behindyou,canallbenefitoneanother.”

Asforherfuture, Nickshasexpressedhercommitmenttocontinuing bothherpersonalandprofessionalpursuits.
“With football,I want to playuntilIcan’tanylonger,” said Nicks. “And I’llserveUncleSamaslongasheallowsmetoserve.”

ThisassessmentmarksasignificantmilestoneasMacDillAir Force BasebecamethefirstDepartmentoftheAir Force,orDAF,installationtouseUTMcapabilitieswithincontrolledairspaceassignedto DepartmentofDefenseairtrafficcontrollers. Thisensuresthesafe operationsofunmannedaerialvehicles,or UAS, alongsidemannedair operations,enhancingoveralloperationalsafety.
TheCLUEprogram,initiatedin2016atAFRL’s InformationDirectorateinRome,New York,aimstopreparetheAir ForceandDepartmentofDefensetouse UASontheirinstallationsthroughSecurity Forces, airfieldmanagementandcivilengineering. TheCLUEUTM providesairdomain awareness, situational awarenessandUTMoperationalcapabilitiesfor UASoperators,airtrafficcontrolpersonnel, Security Forcesandotherstakeholders.
AFRLbroughtCLUEtotheMacDillbasein February2022todemonstrateitscapabilitiestopersonnelinvolvedin UASoperations,particularlyairtrafficcontrolandSecurity Forces.Initialtestingfocused onevaluatingCLUEUTMcapabilitiesforairspacedeconfliction,communicationandsecuritytoenable UASoperationsbeyondthevisual lineofsight.
Sincethen,throughcollaborationwiththe6thSecurity Fo rce s Squadron,6thOperationsGroup, AMCAirfieldOperationsDivision andAir ForceFlightStandardsAgency,ithasbeendeterminedthat thenextphaseofassessmentshouldcommence.Originallydesignedto beaDOD/Federal UASservicesupplier,CLUEhasbeendevelopedfor twoyearsatMacDillAir ForceBasetohelpairtrafficcontrollersby givingthemathree-dimensionalviewtoimprovetheirexistingproceduresandallowautomaticflightpermissionfor UASoperators.

Unlikepre-existingforcegeneration processesbuiltaroundphysicallydeployableforces, spaceforcesareprimarilyemployed-in-place, drivingtheneedforauniqueforce generation model.Thismodelhasthreephases—Prepare, Ready, andCommit—establishinga predictable, standardizedbattlerhythmthatcombat squadronsordetachmentsrotatethrough.
“TheuniquemissionoftheSpace Forceenablesustogeneratecombatcapabilitywhile employed-in-placeatourstatesidebases,” said Bentivegna. “WhilesomeGuardianfunctions areessentialintheater, themajorityoperate fromthe U.S., deliveringcrucial warfighting capabilitiestocombatant commandersandthe jointforce.”
