CUEVA DE LOS ÍDOLOS

UN TESORO DE LA ARQUEOLOGÍA MAJORERA Por Eloy Vera Hasta la Cueva de los ídolos, en La Oliva, acudían hombres de la zona para refugiarse de miradas y chivatazos y poder jugar a las cartas de forma clandestina. El hallazgo, por parte de un vecino, de un pequeño ídolo prehistórico la situó en el mapa arqueológico regional y la abrió a la comunidad científica a principios de los setenta del siglo pasado. Junto a los jugadores de baraja, que ocasionalmente visitaban la cueva, se hallaba un tesoro arqueológico, único en la isla. Victoria del Toro es graduada en Historia del Arte y máster en Arqueología. La joven acudió a este tubo volcánico, situado en el Malpaís de La Arena, para hacer el trabajo fin de máster. Tras barajar otras posibilidades, terminó decantándose por recuperar la bibliografía escrita hasta el momento sobre la cueva y analizar los miles de fragmentos cerámicos encontrados en el yacimiento y que ahora custodia el Cabildo de Fuerteventura. De mano del relato de la arqueóloga, regresamos a los años setenta del siglo XX para conocer los inicios de los trabajos arqueológicos en el lugar. Del Toro recuerda cómo por esas fechas se encontró «un idolillo en su interior que dio pie a que se hiciera una primera intervención arqueológica a manos de Julio Moisés y P. Leal, en 1970». Tras ellos, en 1971, se desplazó a la zona Francisca Hernández, de la Comisaría General de Excavaciones, que recogió información que más tarde entregó a Demetrio Castro Alfín. En 1974, este profesor continuó la labor arqueológica extrayendo nuevo material y vinculando los restos cerámicos a unos cien recipientes.

En esos años, la cueva no dejó de arrojar material arqueológico. Victoria del Toro define el lugar como un «yacimiento extraordinario tanto en el contexto aborigen de Fuerteventura en particular, como en el de Canarias en general, debido a la cantidad y singularidad de los materiales que se hallaron en su interior, más aún si tenemos en cuenta las dimensiones de la cueva, 16 metros de largo y entre 7 y 1,5 de ancho». Entre el material encontrado en esos años se cuenta material lítico, fauna terrestre (ovicápridos), malacofauna (restos de lapas majorera, burgados y mejillones), ictiofauna (espinas de pescado), huesos humanos, placas pulimentadas, que pudieron ser usadas como cuentas de collar, molinos en miniatura, punzones de hueso, dos pequeños objetos pétreos identificados con posibles pintaderas, varios idolillos y gran cantidad de cerámica. Para la investigadora, «lo más significativo fue el hallazgo de varios idolillos con forma antropomorfa, con marcado carácter sexual, tanto hombres como mujeres, que terminarían dando el nombre de Cueva de los Ídolos al lugar». Era la primera vez que se encontraban estos ídolos en los yacimientos arqueológicos de Fuerteventura. Castro Alfín habló en sus estudios de diez ídolos de los que solo refiere ocho. Seis de ellos tienen formas antropomorfas y están hechos en piedra o hueso, mientras que los otros dos son placas de piedra decoradas. Victoria del Toro explica que los restos humanos encontrados correspondían a piezas dentales, parte del cráneo y de un fémur «pero su estado era muy malo por lo que no se ha podido clarificar sexo, edad, ni si es uno o más individuos». Además, se encontró «un hueso de

costilla que podría ser humana con varias incisiones», añade. En 2017 la investigadora decidió comenzar una investigación relativa a la cerámica hallada en la cueva. Por sus manos pasaron 6123 fragmentos, la mitad, aproximadamente, de los encontrados en el lugar. La intención era identificar las características de la cerámica a través de su observación macroscópica para identificar el tipo de pasta, cocción, tratamientos en superficie, aspectos morfológicos y decorativos. Tras el estudio, la investigadora pudo comprobar cómo se usaron varias técnicas decorativas como el arrastre, que se divide en la acanalada (la retirada de arcilla se realiza con un instrumento de punta ancha, que puede presentar forma redondeada o cuadrangular) y la incisión (el surco se realiza con un instrumento cortante de punta angosta o fina), y otras técnicas de presión sin arrastre. Asimismo, los fragmentos estudiados destacan por su decoración en zigzag y por haber sido realizados por varias personas además de pasar desde facturas cuidadas a otras más irregulares. También se encontraron restos de cerámica de época histórica lo que abre la vía a que la cueva fuera utilizada tras la conquista. Del Toro llama la atención sobre la importancia de esta cueva que pudo ser usada como habitación, con fines funerarios, a tenor de los huesos encontrados, o incluso, como «lugar de ocultación para proteger el material de una amenaza por un conflicto entre clanes o de los conquistadores». Teorías y posibilidades hay, casi tantas, como el número de cartas de una baraja.

LA CUEVA DE LOS ÍDOLOS A TREASURE OF «MARJORERA» ARCHAEOLOGY

By Eloy Vera The male inhabitants of the area used to come to this «Cueva de los ídolos», in La Oliva, to shelter from witnesses and play cards clandestinely. The discovery of a little prehistoric idol by a neighbour placed it in the regional archaeological map, and it was opened to the scientific community at the beginning of the 70’s in the last century. Next to the card players, who occasionally visited the cave, there was an archaeological treasure, unique in the island. Victoria del Toro is graduated in History or Art and has a master in archaeology. This young lady went to this volcanic tube, located in «El Malpaís de la Arena» to make her master final project. After considering other options she ended up recovering the bibliography about the cave written up to the moment and analysing thousands of ceramic fragments found in the site and that now are under the surveillance of Fuerteventura Council. In this archaeologist’s relate, we go back to the 70’s in the XX century to get to know the beginning or the archaeologic works in this place. Del Toro remembers how at those times a little idol was found inside and this led to the first archaeological intervention by Julio Moisés and P.Leal, in 1970. After them, in 1971, Francisca Hernández came to the area from the General Commissioner for archaeological excavations, who collected the information that she would hand out to Demetrio Castro Alfín later on. In 1974 this professor continued the archaeologic works, finding out new material and relating the ceramic remains to about one hundred recipients.

At those years, the cave didn’t stop disclosing archaeological material. Victoria del Toro defines the place as an «extraordinary archaeological site, in the aboriginal context of Fuerteventura in particular, and in that of The Canary Islands in general, due to the amount and singularity of the material that was found inside, and even more extraordinary if we consider the dimensions of the cave, 16 metres long and between 7 and 1,5 metres wide». Among the material found all through these years there are stones, terrestrial fauna (sheep and goat remains), molluscs (remains of limpets from the island, «burgados» and mussels), «ictiofauna» (fish bones), human remains, smooth stones, which could have been used as collar beads, little mills, bone punches, two little stone objects identified with presumed «pintaderas» (decorated stone plaques), several idols and a great deal of ceramics. For this researcher, the most meaningful aspect was the findings of several little anthropomorphic idols and with a marked sexual meaning, male and female alike, which ended up naming this place after them, «Cueva de los ídolos del lugar» It was the first time that these idols had been found in archaeological sites in Fuerteventura. Castro Alfín spoke in his studies about ten idols but he only relates eight out of them. Six of them are anthropomorphic and are made of stone and bone, while the other two are decorated stone plaques. Victoria del Toro says that the found human remains were teeth, parts of the cranium and a femur «but they were in a really bad condition, so we couldn’t clarify sex, age or if they belonged to just one or more than one individuals». Moreover, a rib bone was found «which could be human and with several incisions», she adds.

In 2017, the researcher decided to start a study related to the ceramics found in the cave. She examined 6123 fragments, half the amount of pieces that were found in that place. The aim was to identify the characteristics of the ceramics through macroscopic observation and the kind of plaster, boiling, treatments on the surface and some morphologic and decorative aspects. After the study, the researcher could prove how different decorative techniques, such as the engraving, which is divided into crenellated (the mud is removed with a wide tip tool which could be rounded or square),incision(the groove is made with a sharp tool with wide or thin tip), and other techniques. Likewise, the studied fragments stand out for its zigzag decoration and for having been made by several people, there being regular and irregular shapes. There are also ceramic remains of this history era, which makes us think that the cave could have been used after the conquest. Del Toro draws our attention to the importance of this cave, which could have been used as a room with mourning purposes, as the found bones prove, or even as a «hiding place to protect the material from a threat of conflict among clans or conquerors». There are as many hypotheses and possibilities as cards you can find in a deck of cards.

ALANA NICHOLS Entrevista realizada por Play and Train

Seis medallas paralímpicas en silla de ruedas de baloncesto y esquí alpino, varias competiciones de surf adaptado, son las hazañas conseguidas tras una impresionante recuperación después de un accidente traumático que la dejó paralizada de cintura para abajo cuando era apenas una adolescente. Si una palabra define a Alana Nichols, sin duda, sería la resistencia. Su fuerza la ayudó a abandonar el «lugar tan oscuro» en el que cayó después de romperse la espalda a la edad de 16 años, y la llevó a la cima de no uno, sino tres deportes adaptados. Con la misma perseverancia y el mismo esfuerzo que la convirtieron en una atleta por excelencia, Nichols ahora persigue un nuevo objetivo: hacer del surf adaptado un deporte paralímpico. Esta es una de las razones por las que fue invitada a hablar en el primer Seminario Europeo de Surf Adaptado organizado por la Asociación Play and Train que tuvo lugar el pasado mes de octubre en Corralejo. Deporte como una forma de curar heridas Alana es atleta desde la edad de 5 años, jugó voleibol,

fútbol, baloncesto y practicó snowboard. Fue precisamente en una tabla de snow donde ocurrió el accidente que la dejaría paralizada de cintura para abajo tras reventarse la espalda practicando uno de sus deportes favoritos. «Me quedé paralizada en ese momento, y durante unos dos años estuve en un lugar muy oscuro, con un ánimo muy bajo. Hasta que encontré el deporte de nuevo» nos confiesa Alana. El deporte ha sido la brújula de su vida y, como ella admite, un factor importante en su recuperación psicológica después de la lesión. «Sentí que no sabía quién era, porque me identificaba con ser atleta, tenía objetivos, quería practicar todos los días ... y después, sin eso, me sentía perdida. No estaba bien, me faltaban las sensaciones que me transmite el deporte. Toqué fondo, alcohol, drogas… llegando a tener el ánimo por los suelos. Fue en ese punto tan bajo cuando encontré el baloncesto en silla de ruedas. Siento que fue un momento Divino para mí; como si Dios hubiera intervenido en mi vida. Volvía a sentir las sensaciones de cuando era atleta ... ‘¡Guau!, lo intenté e inmediatamente sentí

que tenía objetivos otra vez. Me cambió». Pocos años después, Alana estaba de nuevo en el podio, esta vez con el equipo nacional de los Estados Unidos celebrando su medalla de oro en los Juegos Paralímpicos de Beijing 2008. Para Nichols, una de las «mejores partes» de los deportes adaptados es que «puedes estar en una comunidad de personas que son como tú y no te sientes tan aislado». Llegas a un lugar donde no sientes pena por ti mismo. De repente, ves las cosas de manera diferente; obtienes una nueva perspectiva», nos confiesa. Recuperar el deporte terminó teniendo efectos positivos en otras áreas de su vida. «Después me volví mejor en la escuela, sacaba mejores notas, era más sociable...». Nichols se graduó en educación y más tarde completó un máster en kinesiología. En cuanto a los deportes, no solo practicó baloncesto en silla de ruedas, sino que también cambió el snowboard por esquís adaptados. En 2010, se convirtió en la primera mujer estadounidense con medallas de oro en los Juegos Olímpicos de verano y de invierno.

«SI PUEDES SALIR AL OCÉANO, PUEDES HACER CUALQUIER COSA» Después de eso, llegaron los juegos de Sochi 2014, a los que Nichols llegó recuperándose de una lesión en el hombro, y donde tuvo otro accidente dramático mientras competía en el súper evento de esquí adaptado. Poco después, durante unas vacaciones en Hawái, la atleta descubrió el surf adaptado y, según explica, un solo pensamiento cruzó por su mente: «Tengo que hacer esto. Me empujaron a la ola, la cogí con mi paddle y cambió mi vida», recuerda Nichols. Así se mudó de Colorado a California, se subió a una tabla y comenzó a surfear. Este pasado diciembre ganó el primer Campeonato Mundial Femenino de Surfing Adaptado en La Jolla (California). Nichols habla sobre el surf adaptado tan apasionadamente como defiende que se convierta en un deporte paralímpico. «Una vez que estás en el agua es muy divertido. Me encanta el baloncesto en silla de ruedas, me encanta el kayak, pero el surf ... cada ola es diferente y tienes que estar siempre presente y concentrada. ¡Esa ola va a atraparme, mejor no la remo, o esa es mi ola, voy a por ella! Cada momento es único. . .8

Alana también tuvo la oportunidad de surfear en Fuerteventura —como parte del seminario de Surf Adaptado en el que participó—, la isla le pareció hermosa entre volcanes, olas y vientos; y presume del gran equipo que la acompaño en este seminario, con el que compartió volcanes y olas. La atleta de 34 años, quien también es una ávida defensora de las personas con discapacidad, terminó su conversación con nosotros con palabras de aliento para aquellos que podrían estar luchando como lo hizo ella después del accidente. «La vida es impredecible, pero no se trata de lo que sucede, sino de lo que haces con ella. Y no importa cuál sea su lesión, lo mejor es aprovechar al máximo la vida. El surf cambiará tu vida y cambiará tu perspectiva sobre lo que puedes y no puedes hacer. Si puedes salir al océano, puedes hacer cualquier cosa». Gracias Play and Train por acercarnos está increible historia de superación. Deseamos que Alana siga cosechando éxitos y que pronto el surf adaptado sea un gran deporte Paralímpico, con su perseverancia no tenemos dudas de que lo conseguirá.

Six Paralympic medals in wheelchair playing basketball and alpine skiing, several competitions of adapted surf, an amazing recovery after a traumatic accident that left her paralysed from waist downwards when she was hardly a teenager. If there is a word that defines Alana Nichols, no doubt, it would be resilience. Her strength helped her to leave that «very dark place» where she fell after breaking her back at the age of 16 and brought her to the summit of not one but three adapted sports. With the same perseverance and effort that turned her into an athlete by excellence, now Nichols pursues a new target: turn adapted surf into a Paralympic sport. This is one of the reasons why she was invited to speak in the first European Seminary of Adapted Surf organised by the Association Play and Train that took place last October in Corralejo.

SPORT AS A WAY TO HEAL INJURIES Alana has been an athlete since she was 5: she played baseball, football, basket and practised snowboard. It was just on a snowboard that she had the accident that would paralyse her legs after breaking her back while practising one of her favourite sports: «I became paralysed at that moment, and for some years I was in a very dark place and very depressed until I found sport again», Alana confesses. Sports have been the compass of her life and, as she admits, an important factor in her psychological recovery after the injury. «I felt I didn’t know who I was, as I identified myself with an athlete, I had targets, I wanted to practise everyday…. And then, without that, I felt lost. I wasn’t well, I lacked the feeling that sport gave me. I hit rock bottom, alcohol, drugs… down in the dumps. It was at that point that I found wheelchair basketball. I felt it was a Divine moment for me; as if God had taken the reins of my life. I wanted to have the feelings of being an athlete...wow! I tried it and immediately I felt I had targets again. It changed me!» A few years later, Alana was again in the podium, this time with the national team of the EEUU celebrating her golden medal in the Paralympic Games of Beijing 2008.

For Nichols, one of the «best parts» of adapted sports is that «you can be in a community of people who are like you and you don’t feel so isolated». You get to a place where you don’t pity yourself. Suddenly you see matters in a different way; you get a new perspective» she confesses. Recovering sports ended up having a positive effect on other areas in her life. «After that I became a better student, I got better marks and I became more social…» Nichols graduated in education and later on she made a master in Kinesiology. As for sports, not only did she practise wheelchair basket, but she changed snowboard for sit ski too. In 2010, she became the first EEUU woman with golden medals in Summer and Winter Paralympic Games.

«IF YOU CAN GO INTO THE OCEAN, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING» After that, The Sochi 2014 Game came, where she participated when she was recovering from a shoulder injury, and where she suffered another dramatic accident while competing in the superstars modality. After a short while, during some holidays in Hawaii, the athlete discovered adapted surf and, as she says, a single thought sprang to mind: «I have to do this. They pushed me into the wave, I caught it with my paddle and this changed my life», Nichol remembers. Then she moved from Colorado to California, she got on the board and she started to surf. Last December she won the first feminine World Championship of Adapted Surfing in La Jolla (California). Nichols speaks about adapted surf as passionately as she

supports its becoming a Paralympic sport. «Once you are in the water it’s very funny. I love wheelchair basket and Kayak, but surf… every wave is different, and you have to be so present…: «that wave is going to catch me, I’d better not paddle», or «that’s my wave, let’s go for it». It’s very unique all the time». Alan also had the chance to surf in Fuerteventura – as a part of the seminary of Adapted Surf in which she took part-, the island among volcanoes, waves and winds seemed beautiful to her; and she feels proud of the team that accompanied her to this seminary and with whom she shared volcanoes and waves. The 34-year-old athlete, who is also an avid supporter of handicapped people, ended her conversation with us with the following encouraging words for those who could be fighting as she did after the accident. «Life is unpredictable, but it isn’t about what happens but about what you do with her. No matter what your injury has been, the best thing is to get the most out of your life. Surf will change your life and your perspective about what you can and what you can’t do. If you can go into the ocean you can do anything». Thanks, Play and Train, for getting this incredible story of personal growth closer to us. We wish Alana to keep achieving success and Adapted Surf to become a Paralympic sport. Determined as she is we have no doubt that she will succeed in this as well.

Además, todos los negocios que apoyen el proyecto se marcarán claramente en el mapa FuerteCoin y tendrán sus logos y enlaces exhibidos en la sección de «Miembros» dentro de la web, aportando así mayor visibilidad a su negocio. Habrá también un Mercado Virtual que servirá de escaparate para productos y servicios de las empresas colaboradoras. Los usuarios de FuerteCoin podrán vender en este mercado lo que ya no necesiten, ofrecer sus servicios como profesionales en la isla o, como artesa-

nos, vender sus creaciones también en el extranjero. El Mercado Virtual servirá de punto de encuentro entre usuarios que quieran llevar a cabo acciones de economía colaborativa como compartir coche para ir al trabajo o crear grupos de compra de verdura ecológica. ¿Cuándo acudir al veterinario? Si su perro presenta halitosis, dolor al masticar, salivación excesiva y/o dientes oscuros o amarillentos, es el momento de pedir una consulta con su veterinario. El veterinario debe revisar los dientes de su mascota y explorar el estado de salud del mismo. Si su perro presenta síntomas de problemas bucales le recomendará una limpieza dental profesional. ¿En qué consiste una limpieza dental? LIMPIAVENTURA LLEGA A LAS ESCUELAS

La asociación medioambiental sin ánimo de lucro Limpiaventura lleva casi tres años limpiando nuestras playas. Todo empezó como un grupo de amigos que cada domingo se reunía para recoger la basura que ensucia nuestras costas; a día de hoy, son un grupo de voluntarios consolidado que no ha faltado ni un solo domingo para hacer realidad su sueño, «limpiar el mar». Y este es el objetivo que persiguen con un taller educativo que han desarrollando para niños y niñas de la isla y con el que están visitando uno a uno los colegios de Fuerteventura. El taller, «Jurella va a las escuelas», es una adaptación de un cuento cedido por la Universidad de Chile, «El viaje de Jurella y los microplásticos». Limpiaventura ha creado en base a este cuento una actividad, que puede durar entre 45 minutos y 2 horas y media, y que pretende concienciar a los más pequeños sobre las consecuencias de la basura que llega al mar. Se trata de una actividad en la que los niños son los protagonistas y que ayuda a aflorar en los jóvenes la conexión innata con la naturaleza y el amor y el respeto por el medio, sentimientos que ya poseen y que solo hay que intentar sacar a flote. El taller se desarrolla en varias fases. Mediante un cuentacuentos y con la visita de los animales protagonistas del cuento, desarrollan una actividad interactiva en la que se comparten ideas sobre los perjuicios de la basura en el mar, el reciclaje, animales marinos y la necesidad de protección de los mismos; todo ello de forma divertida, mediante manualidades y juegos,… «El taller acaba con una limpieza de playa a la que los niños acuden con una grandísima ilusión y muchas ganas de ayudar y co.16

Actualmente son 4 personas las que desarrollan e integran este taller: Alina, presidenta de Limpiaventura y gerente de la Academia de Idiomas Kunz, la maestra Florence, la pintora Elena y la pedagoga y especialista en medioambiente, Tamara. Para asegurar la continuidad de «Jurella va a las escuelas» Limpiaventura sigue buscando voluntarios profesionales y concienciados, con experiencia en el ámbito de la pedagogía y el trabajo con niños, que estén dispuestos a comprometerse a largo plazo ya que abarcan escuelas de toda la isla. «Tú eres el cambio que el mundo necesita. Tú eres capaz de crear un impacto simplemente cambiando tus hábitos y uniéndote a gente que quiere hacer las mismas cosas que tú. The environmental non-profit association Limpiaventura has been working on cleaning our beaches for almost three years. It all started as a group of friends that met every Sunday to pick up the waste that dirties our coast; nowadays, they are a consolidated group of volunteers that has not missed a single Sunday to make their dream come true: «cleaning the sea». And this is the target they pursue with an educative workshop they have been developing for the children in the island and with which hey are visiting the schools in Fuerteventura The workshop «Jurella va a las escuelas» is an adaptation of a tale given up by the University of Chile: «El viaje de Jurella y los microplásticos». Limpiaventura has created an activity based on this tale, which Can take between 45 minutes and 2 and a half hours, aiming to make the youngest aware of the consequences of all the waste that arrives in the sea. It’s an activity where children are the protagonists, helping to develop their innate connection with nature, love and respect for the environment, feelings that they already have and only need to be brought to life. The workshop is developed in several stages. Through storytelling and the visit to the main animal-characters of the story they develop an interactive activity where ideas about the harm of the waste in the sea are shared, recycling, marine animals and the need to protect them; all of it in a funny way by means of handicrafts and games… «The workshop ends with the cleaning of the beach in which children participate very excited and willing to help and cooperate», Alina Kunz, the president of the association tells us. «It’s a project that unites, promotes teamwork and where everybody learns from action».

Another strong point of this beautiful activity is that adults are inspired by the excitement transferred by children. And it’s just this passion for learning of the youngest and their willingness to protect nature what motivates Limpiaventura to keep giving example with their perseverance and coherence. Nowadays there are four people developing and integrating this workshop: Alina, president of Limpiaventura and manager of the language School Kunz; Florence, the teacher; Elena, the painter, and Tamara, the pedagogue and environmental specialist. To ensure the continuity of «Jurela va a la escuela», Limpiaventura keeps looking for volunteer and aware professionals with experience in the field of pedagogy and work with children, ready to commit for a long period of time as they work with schools all over the island. «You are the change that the world needs.
