paja) y tostarlo en una especie de paellera puesta al fuego con arena en el fondo para evitar que se queme. Después de dejarlo enfriar se muele, escachándolo entre dos grandes piedras enfrentadas. En sus inicios, los aborígenes molían el grano por la fricción de las dos piedras a mano, y con el tiempo este trabajo fue cedido a los molinos de agua o de viento. Todavía existen muchos de estos molinos destinados al molido del gofio desperdigados por el archipiélago, e incluso los hay que siguen funcionando en la actualidad.
Indicación Geográfica Protegida
Algo que se sabe poco es que el Gofio Canario cuenta con el sello de Indicación Geográfica Protegida (IGP) de la Unión Europea desde 1994, una distinción similar a la famosa Denominación de Origen pero algo menos exigente ya que no requiere que todo el proceso de producción se lleve a cabo en el mismo ámbito geográfico.

El gofio, al igual que el plátano de Canarias y las papas arrugadas con mojo picón, cuenta con una innegable fama dentro y fuera de los límites del archipiélago. Tan representativo es de la idiosincrasia de los isleños que en el lenguaje popular existe la expresión más canario que el gofio. Pero ¿qué sabemos de este alimento tan característico de los comedores de las Islas Canarias? En pocas palabras, el gofio es un tipo de harina que se consigue tostando y moliendo el grano, generalmente trigo o millo (maíz). Si nos remontamos a su nacimiento, aunque no hay datos exactos como en la mayoría de los casos cuando hablamos de cultura y costumbres de los pobladores de las islas anteriores a la conquista, existe constancia de que el gofio era utilizado hace cientos de años por los aborígenes canarios. De hecho, la palabra gofio ya era utilizada por los indígenas de Gran Canaria y Lanzarote y se ha mantenido hasta la actualidad. .4
En un principio se hacía con cebada o con trigo, más tarde se fue incorporando el millo, lentejas, garbanzos… y en épocas de necesidad se sacaba gofio casi con cualquier cosa, como con las raíces de un tipo de helecho. Gracias a su elevada carga nutritiva, y ante la escasez de otros alimentos en las islas, fue durante muchos años un alimento básico para los aborígenes y posteriormente en los distintos períodos de hambruna que han padecido las islas a lo largo de la historia.

Los usos del gofio en la cocina llegan hasta donde alcance la imaginación del chef, como sucede con cualquier producto, pero podemos enumerar los más populares. Con una taza de leche, típico desayuno de niños (y no niños) canarios en sustitución de un colacao. Añadir unas cucharadas de gofio al potaje del día, sea el que sea, que no falte. Y para los días especiales que se cocina caldo de pescado o puchero, mezclado con un poco del caldo del guiso y servido con cebolla y mojo, tenemos la delicia del gofio escaldao, o escaldón como lo llaman en las islas más occidentales. Cada vez es más habitual encontrarlo también en los postres, en forma de mousse o de flan, y algún entusiasta de nuestro producto estrella se ha atrevido a producir hasta un licor de gofio… si lo encuentran no dejen de probarlo, está riquísimo.

Guaxara CastaĂąeyra El “gofioâ€?, just like the Canary banana and the “papas arrugadas con mojo picĂłnâ€?, is incredibly popular within and outside the archipelago. So representative is it of the islanders’ idiosincrasy that there’s a popular saying: “more Canary islander than “Gofioâ€? But, what do we know about this food, so characteristic in the dinning rooms of The Canary Islands? In few worlds, “gofioâ€? is a kind of flour produced by toasting and grinding the grain, usually corn or “milloâ€? (sweet corn). Dating back to its origin, although there aren’t exact data like in most cases when we speak about culture and traditions from the inhabitants of the Islands before the conquest, there are records that “gofioâ€? was used by Canary Island natives hundreds of years ago. Actually, the word “gofioâ€? was already used by the natives from Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, and it’s been kept up to present.
In the beginning, it was made of barley or corn; later on, “millo�, lentils, chickpeas...started to appear, and in times of necessity gofio was made out of almost anything, like from the roots of a kind of fern. Thanks to its high nutritional value and due to the scarcity of other food in the islands, it was a basic food for natives for many years and, later on, in the different famine periods the island has undergone throughout history.
Elaboration
To make gofio the traditional way, once the grain has been harvested, you must thresh it (separate it from the straw) and toast it in a kind of pan for cooking “paella� on the fire with sand at the bottom to avoid it burning. After leaving it cool down you grind it, crushing it with two big stones facing each other. In its beginnings, the natives ground the grain by rubbing the stones manually, and in time this work was transferred to water and wind mills. There are many of these mills throughout the archipelago still allocated to grinding “gofio� at present.
Something little known about “gofio� is that it’s had the seal of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) of the European Union since 1994, a seal similar to the well-known Denomination of Origin but not so comanding, as it doesn’t require all the production process taking place in the same geographical area.
In a thousand different ways
The uses of “gofio� in the kitchen get to where the cook’s imagination does, as it happens with any other product, but we can mention the most popular ones: With a milk cup, it’s the typical Canary Island children’s breakfast (and not children) in substitution of “cola cao�. Some spoonfuls of “gofio� to the day’s dish, it doesn’t matter what it is, can’t be missing. And for special cooking days when we cook fish stock or stew, we mix “gofio� with some stock from the strew and serve it with some onion and “mojo�. Thus we get a delicious scalded “gofio�, as it’s called in the most occidental islands. It’s becoming more and more common to find it in desserts as well, in the shape of mousse or cream caramel; an enthusiast of our star product has even dared to produce a “gofio� liquor... if you find it, give it a try, it’s delicious.

TEXTO: Eloy Vera Esperanza Barreras se crió con el salitre del mar gallego. Natural de Vigo, reside desde 2013 en Fuerteventura. En su mar ha encontrado las condiciones idóneas para practicar el paddle surf, un deporte que le ha permitido ser la primera española bicampeona del mundo de Stand Up Paddle. En el Campeonato del Mundo de El Salvador, la monitora de la Escuela Náutica de Corralejo conquistó dos medallas de oro, una en la modalidad de larga distancia y la otra en la de race técnica. ¿Cómo llega al mundo de los deportes náuticos? En mi familia había cultura del mar. Tanto mi abuelo como mi padre construían barcos. Por lo tanto, siempre estuvimos vinculados al mar. Desde peque.6
ña he estado navegando. En mi familia siempre nos han animado a practicar cualquier deporte: tenis, bicicleta, vela, surf… Sobre todo, los vinculados al mar. He sido regatista y competidora en vela un montón de años. También pertenecí al equipo de vela y representé a España como regatista. Lo que no había hecho nunca era representar a España por otro deporte diferente. ¿Cómo llega al mundo del Stand Up Paddle? Antes de llegar a Fuerteventura no me había llamado mucho la atención. Cuando empecé a trabajar en el Club Onexe, con tanta tradición en Stand Up Paddle, nos encontrábamos con que había semanas en las que no había olas. Un día me dieron un remo y una tabla y me fui a probar a remar, siempre de la mano de Nayra
Martínez, y me gustó. Luego Iballa Ruano me llevó a Majanicho a coger olas con el surf y ya me enganché totalmente. Eso fue hace como tres años. ¿Cómo fueron sus inicios en el mundo de la competición en esta disciplina? Al poquito de estar remando, los chicos del equipo fueron a un campeonato en Gran Canaria y Nayra me inscribió para ir. La verdad es que no me veía muy segura, pero ella me dijo vente con nosotros. Esa fue mi primera carrera. Estuve como un año y medio yendo a las carreras, pero sólo por ir con el equipo y acompañarles. He sido competitiva toda mi vida y siempre me ha gustado dar el máximo, pero sin mucha ambición ni ponerme objetivos. Sólo iba a disfrutar y viajar con los chicos.

“We deserve more support, as we always lead and promote Fuerteventura”
TEXT: Eloy Vera Esperanza Barreras was brought up with the saltpetre of the Galician sea. Born in Vigo she’s been living in Fuerteventura since 2013. In her sea she’s found ideal conditions to practise paddle surf, a sport that has allowed her to become the first two-time Spain World champion in Sand Up Paddle. In the World championship of El Salvador, the instructor of Escuela Naútica of Corralejo conquered two golden medals, one in long distance and the other one in technique race. How did you get to the world of water sports? The sea culture ran in my family. My grand-father and father used to build ships. So, we were always linked to the sea. I’ve been sailing since I was a child. We’ve always been encouraged to practise any sports: tennis, bike, sail, surf... mainly those ones related to the sea. I’ve been a yachtswoman and a sail competitor for many years. I’ve also belonged to the sail team and represented Spain as a yachtswoman. What I’d never done was to represent Spain in a different sport. How did you get to Stand Up Paddle? Before arriving in Fuerteventura It’d never drawn my attention much. When I started to work in Club Onexe, so well-known for that sport, we found that some weeks there weren’t any waves. One day they gave me a paddle and and board and I went to try them, always accompanied by Nayra Martínez, and I liked it. Then, Ibana Ruano took me to Majanicho to catch waves and I got totally hooked on it. That was some three years ago.
How was your start in the world of competition in this discipline? Soon after starting off, the team went to the championship of Gran Canaria, and Nayra enroled me to go with them. The truth is I didn’t feel very confident, but she told me “come with us”. That was my first race. I was attending races for one and a half years, but just for the sake of accompanying them. I’ve always been competitive and I’ve always liked giving my best, but without much ambition nor setting targets. My target was just to enjoy and acompany them. Then, other competitions came… I took part in several Spain championships during those two years, but I always got the third position. The truth is I wasn’t really training for it. After the third Spain championship I thought: I want to be at the top as well. I’ve always been an athlete and I’ve always liked giving my best. In January, when Óscar Ruiz came to work with us to the high performance centre, we started working together. From then onwards there was a change in all the training. You feel motivated and feel like training more and setting higher targets. How did you face the Stand Paddle (SUP) and Paddle board world championship celebrated in November in the beach of El Sunzal (El Salvador)? When Óscar came, my main target was to join the national team because it was something I’d never achieved. In September we took part in the Spain Championship of long distance technique race on the beach and we won it in Suances, in Cantabria. Two weeks later we went to participate in the long distance Spain Championship, in Alicante, and we won it too. The goal was accomplished, I joined the national team. We managed to make a team of three competitors together with Susak Molinero and Laura Quetglas. Going to El Salvador was already a prize by itself. The Spain championship was in September and then we had one month to prepare for the world championship. It meant giving our best, three sessions a day, and the truth is we worked really hard. We got to El Salvador with the idea of getting a top five. What has becoming a world champion meant to you? It was a dream I hadn’t contemplated. The first world championship I took part in and two victories in the two competitions I raced. It was a dream I didn’t expect and I still find it hard to believe. From now onwards, what goals are there ahead? For 2020 I’d like to take part in a larger number of races in the Euro Tour and start to take part in world circuits in two or three races, although it’ll all depend on the help I find. We’re looking for sponsors because trips and logistics cost a lot. What role does Fuerteventura play in this victory? Fuerteventura is an incredible place to train. It has a wonderful weather and the best possible conditions. We have smooth water, wind, waves... Having trained in the wind for the last months has helped me a lot to keep fit and also to work my head in a different way. The place is spectacular. Water sports are giving victories and good results to local competitors but, are they getting enough support in the islad? I’d make a call since in an island surrounded by the sea and where we’ve had incredible results in sports like sail, windsurf, surf.... I think we deserve more support because we lead this island and we promote it, and any help is insufficient. We’d be delighted to get any help. Has equallity reached women and men in this sport? When we are in championships, men and women enter and exit at the same point. Many times we get the same time and prizes. There’s a group of female athletes that has succeeded in reaching equality in this sport, which is fair and necessary. The day you have to leave the board definitely, what would you like to do? I think I’ll leave one board to get on another one. I’ve always been connected to the sea and I love the feeling of being on it. So, I don’t think this will ever happen, I’ll always be enjoying the sea.

Luego, llegaron otras competiciones… Luego hice varios campeonatos de España durante esos dos años en los que siempre estuve tercera. En realidad, era justo porque yo tampoco me estaba preparando para ello. Al tercer Campeonato de España, pensé «yo también quiero estar arriba». Siempre he sido deportista y siempre me ha gustado dar el máximo. En enero, cuando llegó Óscar Ruiz al centro de tecnificación, empezamos a trabajar juntos. A partir de ahí, se dio un cambio a todos los entrenamientos. Te motivan y te dan ganas de prepararte más y de ponerte objetivos más altos. ¿Cómo afrontó el Campeonato del Mundo de Stand Up Paddle (SUP) y Paddle board, que se celebró en noviembre en la playa de El Sunzal (El Salvador)? Cuando Óscar vino, mi objetivo principal era entrar en el equipo nacional porque era algo que no había conseguido nunca. En septiembre, participamos en el Campeonato de España en larga distancia de carrera técnica en playa y lo ganamos en Suances, en Cantabria. Dos semanas después, nos fuimos a correr el Campeonato de España de larga distancia, en Alicante, y también lo ganamos. El objetivo ya estaba cumplido, que era formar parte del equipo nacional. Conseguimos formar un equipo de tres competidoras junto a Susak Molinero y Laura Quetglas. Ir a El Salvador ya era un premio. El Campeonato de España fue en septiembre y luego tuvimos un mes para preparar el Mundial. Fue prepararlo al máximo, tres sesiones por día y la verdad es que trabajamos súper duro. Llegamos a El Salvador con la idea de hacer un top cinco. ¿Qué le ha supuesto ser campeona del mundo? Era un sueño que no me planteaba. El primer Mundial que hago y dos victorias en las dos competiciones que corro. Fue un sueño que no me esperaba y que todavía me cuesta creerlo. A partir de ahora, ¿cuáles son los objetivos que tiene por delante? Para el 2020 lo que quiero es hacer un mayor número de pruebas en el Euro Tour y empezar a correr circuitos mundiales haciendo dos o tres pruebas, aunque todo dependerá de la ayuda que encuentre. Estamos buscando patrocinios porque esto tiene muchos costes de viajes y logística. ¿Qué papel juega Fuerteventura en esta victoria? Fuerteventura es un sitio increíble para entrenar. Tiene un clima muy bueno y todas las condiciones posibles. Tenemos agua plana, viento, olas… A mí, en concreto, el haber estado entrenando con viento durante estos últimos meses me ha ayudado mucho en la forma física y también a trabajar la cabeza de otra manera. El sitio es espectacular.
Los deportes náuticos están dando victorias y buenos resultados a los competidores locales, pero ¿se les está apoyando lo suficiente en la isla? Yo haría un llamamiento porque en una isla que está rodeada de mar y donde hemos tenido unos resultados increíbles en deportes como la vela, windsurf, surf… creo que llevando como llevamos el nombre de Fuerteventura allá donde vamos, merecemos que se nos apoye más. Cualquier ayuda que nos puedan dar, la recibiremos encantados. ¿Ha llegado la igualdad entre hombres y mujeres a este deporte? Cuando estamos en los campeonatos hacemos el mismo recorrido que los chicos. Muchas veces hacemos tiempos iguales y los premios son iguales. Hay un grupo de deportistas femeninas que ha logrado que consigamos la igualdad en el deporte, que es justa y necesaria.
El día que tenga que bajarse definitivamente de la tabla, ¿qué le gustaría hacer? Creo que me bajaré de una para subirme en otra. Siempre he estado vinculada al mar y me encanta la sensación de estar en ella. Así que eso no va a llegar nunca porque siempre estaré disfrutando del mar.

LUZ MARINA RODRÍGUEZ “Mi abuela, Mariquita Hierro, me inculcó el amor por El Cotillo”

Luz Marina Rodríguez se presenta como nieta de Mariquita Hierro. Hecha la primera presentación, explica que es dinamizadora sociocultural. También es una de las fundadoras de Cotillo Joven, una de las asociaciones más activas de Fuerteventura. Comprometida con mil y una causas, lucha por las injusticias, sobre todo aquellas que se producen en los límites territoriales de su pueblo, El Cotillo. ¿Qué hay en Luz Marina de Mariquita Hierro? Hay una cosa muy importante y es el amor que nuestra abuela nos arraigó por el pueblo. Creo que tengo este amor y este cariño por el pueblo y me duele tanto lo que le pasa porque es lo que nos inculcó mi abuela. También yo me considero, como ella, emprendedora. ¿Cree que Fuerteventura ha reconocido lo suficiente a Mariquita Hierro y la labor que desempeñó como impulsora del turismo en la zona norte? Se le han hecho reconocimientos, pero no han mantenido viva su imagen como ocurre con otras personas que también hicieron muchísimo por la isla. Tuvieron ciertos reconocimientos, pero tienden a caer en el olvido porque no hay nada actualmente que los represente. .10
¿Qué supuso su abuela para El Cotillo y para Fuerteventura en general? Mi abuela dio un servicio que no había en el pueblo y facilitó la compra a los vecinos con su tiendita. Incluso, dejaba cuentas de clientes pendientes o realizaba intercambio de comida por otras cosas. Todo eso a nivel vecinal. Luego ella hizo otras cosas desde su restaurante como dar de comer a la gente de fuera, militares, gente de otras islas y extranjeros. Ella sacó el nombre del pueblo fuera. Los turistas la conocían como Mamá María. Hablamos ahora de Luz Marina ¿cómo llega al mundo del asociacionismo? Siempre estuvimos, de una forma u otra, en movimientos relacionados con las fiestas del pueblo de El Cotillo. Los chiquillos ofrecíamos cosas a la comisión de fiestas.
Un año, teníamos a una compañera, Vahitiare, en Juventud. Ella nos animó a convertirnos en Asociación para así poder conseguir ayudas. Así empezamos. Vimos que había cosas en el pueblo que faltaban y a nosotros nos gustaba colaborar y poder hacer más. Nos constituimos como asociación hace unos diez o doce años. ¿Qué ha supuesto la aparición de Cotillo Joven para el pueblo de El Cotillo? Creemos que ha sido positivo. El pueblo siempre ha sido muy activo en cuanto al movimiento vecinal. No hemos llegado e inventado nada, pero ahora hay un centro neurálgico y nosotros coordinamos todo. También ha supuesto un contacto directo con las administraciones. Al final, estamos funcionando como asociación de vecinos. Nosotros damos al Ayuntamiento parte de todas las denuncias. En cuanto a las fiestas, creemos que nuestra presencia ha sido también positiva, al haber ayudado a que evolucionaran, mejorando su calidad y dándoles mucha promoción.

“My grand-mohter, Mariquita Hierro, instilled in me her love for El Cotillo” Eloy Vera Luz Marina Rodríguez introduces herself as Mariquita Hierro’s daughter-in-law. After that, she goes on to tell us she’s a sociocultural activist. She’s also a founder of “Cotillo Joven”, one of the most active associations in Fuerteventura. Committed to endless causes, she struggles against injustices, mainly all those taking place in the boundaries of El Cotillo. In what does Luz Marina look after Mariquita Hierro? There’s something very important: the love for this village, which our grand-mother instilled in us. I think I’ve got this loving care for this village and it hurts me so much what happens because this is what my grand-mother inculcated in us.I consider myself an entrepreneur, just like her. Do you believe Fuerteventura has appreciated Mariquita Hierro and the work she did as a promoter of tourism in the Northern area enough? They’ve acknowledged some things, but they haven’t kept her image alive, as it’s happened to other people who also did a lot for the island. They got some acknowledgement but they tend to be forgotten because there’s nothing that represents them at present. What did your grand-mohter mean for El Cotillo and for Fuerteventura in general? My grand-mother gave a service that didn’t exist in this village and made it easier for neighbours to buy in her little shop. She sold on credit and even allowed bartering. All of this at the neighborhood. She also did other things in her restaurant, like feeding militaries, visitors from other islands and foreigners. She made this village popular outside. Tourists called her “mamá Maria”. Now we’ll talk about Luz Marina, how does she get to the world of associations? We always were, one way or another, in actions related to the festivals of El Cotillo. Children used to offer things to the committee of festivals. One year, we had a companion, Vahitiare, in “Juventud”. She encouraged us to become an association in order to get finantial helps. That way we started. We realised there were some things missing in the village, and we liked to collaborate and be able to do things in the village. We constituted as an association some ten or twelve years ago. What has “Cotillo Joven” meant to the village of El Cotillo? We believe it’s been positive. The village’s always been very active regarding neighbourhood activities. We haven’t invented anything but there’s now a neuralgic centre and we coordinate everything. It’s also meant a direct contact with adfministrations. At the end of the day, we’re working as a neighbourhood association. We inform the town hall about all the demands. As for the festivals, we think our presence has been positive. They’ve evolved because we’ve promoted them and improved their quality. What are the lines of work of Cotillo Joven at the moment? As originally planned, we used to work through activism in the village and we run the cultural centre. Then, we grew by running more cultural centres. At present we run three of them: El Cotillo, Parque Holandés and El Roque. We also started to arrange youfh activities through an agreement. We’ve got one with the town hall to carry out municipal operations. We intend to listen to and boost youth movements in other villages. Are young people taken into account when it comes to programming and thinking up projects? Not much, as far as public administrations is concerned. I think it would work differently if demands were considered. At present, they aren’t. They launch offers without bearing in mind

¿Cuáles son las líneas de trabajo de Cotillo Joven en estos momentos? En un principio trabajábamos con acciones en el pueblo y dinamizábamos el centro cultural. Luego fuimos creciendo y dinamizando más centros culturales. Actualmente, dinamizamos tres: El Cotillo, Parque Holandés y El Roque. También empezamos a realizar actividades juveniles a través de un convenio. Tenemos un convenio con el Ayuntamiento para realizar actividades a nivel municipal. Intentamos escuchar y dinamizar los movimientos juveniles también en otros pueblos. ¿Se tiene en cuenta a la juventud majorera a la hora de programar e idear proyectos? Las administraciones públicas no del todo. Creo que funcionaría distinto por demanda. Actualmente, no se trabaja por demanda. Se lanzan ofertas sin tener en cuenta la demanda juvenil. No se ha hecho un trabajo de fondo en cuanto a jóvenes. Este año, por primera vez desde hace más de veinte, el Cabildo ha encargado un estudio sobre la población juvenil. Sin un estudio, un trabajo de calle y una realidad juvenil no sabes qué ofertar. Hasta ahora, ha sido un error porque ha habido
muchas ofertas, pero no han sido demandadas y eso hace que muchas no tengan asistencia. ¿Cómo ve el panorama del asociacionismo en Fuerteventura? A nivel municipal e insular creo que se están abriendo muchas asociaciones para diferentes cosas, pero no veo demasiadas de movimiento y activismo. Todos los pueblos tienen una y eso ya es positivo, pero no todas están activas. Cuesta muchísimo crearse como asociación. Es un follón administrativo. Luego también cuesta mantenerlo. A nivel de asesoría somos una empresa. Tenemos que presentar todo, hasta trimestrales… ¿Qué asignaturas culturales tiene aún pendientes Fuerteventura? Creo que se está perdiendo la cultura canaria. Pienso que debemos proteger más nuestra identidad ya que la estamos perdiendo. ¿De dónde surge el compromiso con el activismo social? Lo mamé desde pequeña. Mi familia siempre fue muy abierta. Luego me fui a estudiar fuera durante casi ocho años y tuve la oportunidad de aprender de diferentes situaciones. Desde pequeña he luchado por cosas que creía justas y ver mundo también ayuda a ver las cosas con perspectiva. En esa lucha se encuentra la situación de los saharauis que viven en campos de refugiados en el desierto… Conocimos la situación del pueblo saharaui por un grupo de amigos que pertenecían a la Asociación Amigos del Pueblo Saharaui. Fuimos allí y conocimos su situación, que es bastante dura. Es una causa totalmente injusta a la que hay que ayudar y nosotros no lo dudamos. Esta es una de las pocas causas por la que nos hemos postulado a favor públicamente y lo seguiremos haciendo. Continuaremos mandando ayuda para que su causa no caiga en el olvido. Cotillo es sede de uno de los eventos más importantes de la isla, el Fuerteventura en Música (FEM), ¿qué echa en falta en él? Al actual Fuerteventura en Música no lo podemos llamar festival porque son solo conciertos por la noche. Nosotros lucharemos siempre por este festival porque supone una inversión para el pueblo, totalmente necesaria y porque consideramos que El Cotillo merece un festival. Sin embargo, creemos que se le tiene que dar una vuelta. Creemos que el FEM tiene que tener una programación de día, donde se traten todos esos temas que forman parte de la filosofía del festival como la protección del medio ambiente y el cuidado del entorno. El Fuerteventura en Música necesita con urgencia un FEM de día para que sea un verdadero festival y deje de ser sólo conciertos por la noche.

This hadn’t been done for over twenty years. Without a study, a street work and a youth reality you don’t know what to offer.Up to now it’s been a mistake, because there’ve been many offers which haven’t been demanded, which makes many of them not be attended. How do you see the association panorama in Fuerteventura? At a municipal level, new associations are being opened. They’re being set up for many different things, but I can’t see any of them of movement and activisim. All the villages have one, and this is already positive, but not all of them are active. It’s really hard for a group to establish themselves as an association. It’s an administrative burden. It’s also hard to maintain it. Regarding consultancy we’re a company. We have to submit everything, even quarterly company VAT balances. What cultural subject has Fuerteventura pending yet? I think The Canary Islands’ culture is being left by the wayside. We must protect our identity more, which we’re losing. Where does the commitment to social activism come up from? I’ve felt it since I was a baby. My family was always very open. Then I went away to study for many years, almost eight, and then you notice different situations. From childhood I’ve always fought for fair causess, and living away afterwards also helps. In that fight we can include the situation Saharan people experience in the refugee camps in the desert... We became aware of the situation of Saharan people through a group of friends belonging to the association “Amigos del Pueblo Saharaui”. We went there and we realised their situation, which was quite hard. It’s totally unfair, and we didn’t hesitate to help them. This is one of the few causes we have totally stood for in public and we’ll keep doing it. We’ll go on sending help so their cause won’t sink into oblivion. Cotillo is the headquarters of one of the most important events in the island, Fuerteventura en Música (FEM), what are you missing in it? The present Fuerteventura en Música cannot be called a festival because they’re just night concerts. We’ll always fight for the festival because it means a totally necessary inversion to the village and we consider El Cotillo deserves to have a festival. However, we think we must change it. The FEM must have a daytime programming, where all the subjects that make up the festival philosophy must be dealt with, such as environmental protection and care. Fuerteventura en Música needs a daytime FEM urgenlty so it really becomes a festival and stops being just night concerts.

Los mejores aceites de oliva virgen extra de Canarias son de Fuerteventura Tuineje se consolida como el municipio olivarero referente de Canarias El pasado 14 de diciembre se entregaron los galardones de la quinta edición del Concurso de Aceite de Oliva Extra de Canarias organizado por el Cabildo de Tenerife en el que resultaron ganadores dos aceites de Fuerteventura, ambos de Tuineje. El aceite de La Gayria, elaborado por Doramas Santana —aceite monovarietal verdial—, gana el primer premio de la Comunidad canaria en la categoría oliva virgen extra, con el premio Gran Oliva de Oro al Mejor Aceite de Oliva Virgen Extra. El aceite de Teguerey, de Luis Hernándesz, —mezcla-coupage de arbequina, hojiblanca y picual—, consigue el Premio Oliva de Oro, en la misma categoria. Una competición en la que se citan los mejores aceites de las Islas Canarias, y en el que los dos primeros premios son para estos dos productos de Fuerteventura, distinguiendo al municipio de Tuineje como referente en Canarias del aceite de oliva virgen extra. El aceite de Luis Hernández ya ha conseguido, cuatro veces, ser el mejor aceite extra de Canarias, pero esta edición, su vecino de Tiscamanita, Doramas Santana, se le ha impuesto con su aceite de La Gayria. La plantación de Olivos en Fuerteventura es algo novedoso, pero la bondad del clima y el empeño de los productores ha conseguido que ya sea algo habitual que nuestros aceites se coloquen entre los mejores de Canarias, eso si, los productores siguen demandando agua agrícola para paliar sequía y carestía en el riego.

The best extra virgin olive oils in The Canary Islands are from Fuerteventura Tuineje consolidates as an olive grower municipality benchmark in The Canary Islands Last December 14th, the prizes of the fifth edition of the contest of Extra Virgin Olive Oil were awarded, organized by the Council of Tenerife, whrere two oils from Fuerteventura were winners, both of them from Tuineje. The oil from La Gayria, produced by Doramas Santana – verdial monovarietal – wins the first prize in the Canary Islands in the Extra Virgin category, with the “Gran Oliva de Oro” prize to the best Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The oil from Teguerey, by Luiz Hernándesz – a blending of “arbequina”, “hojiblanca” and “picual” olive varieties – gets the “Oliva de Oro” prize in the same category. A Competition where the best olive oils in the Canary Islands gather and where two of the first prizes go for these two products from Fuerteventura, distinguishing this municipality of Tuineje as a benchmark in The Canary Islands regarding extra virgin olive oil. The oil by Luis Hernández has already managed to get the best extra virgin olive oil in the Canary Islands for four times, but this edition, his neighbour from Tiscamanita, Doramas Santana, has overcome him with his oil from La Gayria. The olive tree plantation in Fuerteventura is a novelty, but the good weather and the effort by producers have managed to make our olive oils be among the best ones in the Canary Islands, though producers keep claiming agricultural water to palliate the draught and watering scarcity. .14
Rehabilitación de la Casita de La Rosa El Ayuntamiento de La Oliva inicia las labores de rehabilitación de la Casita de La Rosa para reconvertir como albergue esta antigua casa, de edificación tradicional que se encuentra en las cercanías del Albergue de El Cohombrillo. Se está acondicionando para poder acoger a unos 12 huéspedes, complementando así el servicio del albergue, con esta casita, de propiedad municipal, dedicada a estancias para grupos más pequeños.

ALUMNOS DE FUERTEVENTURA FABRICAN PRóTESIS PARA ENVIAR A PAíSES DE ÁFRICA Los alumnos de quinto y sexto del Colegio CEIP de Lajares forman parte de un taller escolar, coordinado por la profesora Loida González, en el que fabrican prótesis de manos para enviar a países de África; una labor altruista de escolares y profesores que mejora la vida de niños y niñas africanos que han sufrido amputaciones. La Asociación Ayúdame 3D, con la que contactó el colegió, envía los diseños al CEIP de Lajares y los escolares tiene que realizar el resto del trabajo, preparando el archivo para que funcione a la perfección en la impresora 3D con la que cuentan. Por el momento están trabajando en la fabricación de 7 prótesis que entregarán en enero. Para esta primera entrega la colaboración que están recibiendo es indispensable puesto que el colegio carece de recursos para conseguir determinados materiales necesarios en la producción de estás prótesis. Loida González, profesora de primaria, está, por tercer año consecutivo, en el top ten de los premios Educa.

STUDENTS FROM FUERTEVENTURA MAkE PROTHESIS TO SEND TO AFRICAN COUNTRIES Students from the fifth and sixth year in the school CEIP of Lajares take part in a school workshop, led by the teacher Loida González, where they make prosthetic hands to send to African countries: an altruist initiative by students and teachers which improves the lives of African children who have suffered amputations. The asociation “Ayúdame 3D”, which the school contacted, sends the designs to the CEIP de Lajares and the students must do the rest of the work, preparing a file so the 3D impression they have works perfectly. At present they’re working in the making of 7 prothesis that will be delivered in January. For this first delivery, the collaboration they’re getting is essential, as the school lacks resources to get certain necessary materials in the production of these prothesis. Loida González, teacher of primary school, is, for the third year in a row, among the top ten Educa awards.

JULIA CASTRO, UNA TEMPORADA LLENA DE éXITOS
In February, Julia’ll take part in the kite world championship, whose first test will take place in Vert Cape, for which she’s training hard; in Wake, she’ll take part in the European (Germany) and World championships (Thailand), always taking the name of Fuerteventura, her island, to the top.
Hemos hablado de ella en muchas ocasiones y no nos cansamos de hacerlo, y es que está majorera de 25 años no para de cosechar éxitos en su carrera deportiva. Hablamos de la rider Julia Castro Christiansen. El pasado mes de noviembre se coronó, por cuarta vez consecutiva, como campeona de España Absoluta de Wakeboard conquistando el pódium en el Campeonato de España que se disputó en Marbella, en la categoría Open femenino, la más concurrida. Con este título, Julia es la única y primera española de la historia en conseguir tantas victorias consecutivas; siendo además, la séptima Absoluta del Mundo en Wake. “La temporada 2019 me ha ido bastante bien, participé en 8 competiciones, 4 de kite y 4 de wake, con un total de 5 pódiums; soy campeona de España de Wake y subcampeona de Kite en Freestyle; un buen balance para acabar el año”. Julia afronta la temporada 2020 con ilusión, pero nos confiesa que “se me presenta un reto interesante, ya que comienzo el año lesionada, con una pequeña molestia en el codo que estoy intentado solucionar. Por otro lado, estoy ilusionada porque he decidido cambiar de disciplina, en kite, dejar el kitepark para pasarme a las olas”. En febrero Julia participará en el campeonato de Mundo de Kite, cuya primera prueba será en Cabo Verde para la que ya está entrenado duro; en Wake, participará en septiembre en el Campeonato de Europa (Alemania) y del Mundo (Thailandia), llevando siempre el nombre de Fuerteventura, su isla, a lo más alto.
JULIA CASTRO, A SEASON FULL OF SUCCESS We’ve talked to her on many occasions and we don’t get tired of it, and this is because this 25-year-old majorera doesn’t stop achieving success in her sport career. We’re talking about the rider Julia Castro Christiansen. Last November she was crowned, for the fourth time in a row, as Spain champion in absolute Wakeboard, conquering the podium in the Spanish championship taking place in Marbella, in the female Open category, which gathered the largest number of participants. With this title, Julia is the only and first Spanish athlete in history to achieve so many victories in a row, being also the seventh absolute of the world in Wake. “The season 2019 was quite alright: I took part in 8 competitions, 4 in kite and 4 in wake, getting a total of 5 podiums. I’m a Spain champion in Wake and runner-up in Freestyle kite, a good balance to end the year” Julia faces the 2020 season with excitement, but she admits that “I’m facing an interesting challenge, as I start the year being injured, with a little pain in my elbow I’m trying to solve. On the other hand, I’m excited because I’ve decided to change discipline in kite, leaving kitepark and starting with waves”. .16

ONEXE CIERRA LA TEMPORADA EN LO MÁS ALTO DEL SUP, A NIVEL NACIONAL y MUNDIAL La isla de Fuerteventura referente en el mundo del SUP gracias a los logros de los integrantes del Club Onexe que conseguían, con sus impresionantes victorias, traerse a la isla 6 merecidas medallas en el Campeonato del Mundo de Stand Up Paddle de El Salvador (noviembre). Allí, la deportista Esperanza Barreras, en su debut mundialista, consiguió dos increíbles oros individuales (SUP Larga Distancia y Beach Race), siendo la primera española que lo consigue; otros dos oros para Itziar Abascal en Technical Prone y con el equipo de Relevos; Iballa Ruano consigue el bronce en la prueba reina de SUP Olas; y una plata en la clasificación por equipos que se trajo Óscar Ruiz, seleccionador nacional de SUP Olas, como miembro del equipo técnico. Onexe ya venía de proclamarse por primera vez campeón de España por clubes el pasado mes de octubre, pero sus victorias no acaban aquí. Para rematar una temporada inmejorable, los deportistas de Onexe demostraron de nuevo su valía en el Fuerteventura SUP Challenge Waves & Race 2019, celebrado los días 6, 7 y 8 de diciembre en Fuerteventura. Una prueba, organizada por el propio Club con la colaboración del Ayuntamiento de La Oliva, que consta de cinco competiciones de gran nivel: Campeonato de España de SUP Olas, Copa de España de Beach Race y SUP Race, y las competiciones de Prone Lifesaving y Longboard.
En el Campeonato de España de SUP Olas, la canaria, Iballa Ruano (Onexe) conquistó su octavo título nacional consecutivo. Unas pruebas en las que los jóvenes de Onexe Team coparon la mayoría de los podiums, destacando las victorias de Benjamin Moreham en SUP Race sub18, Rakele Mannino y Nicolas Trujillo en Beach Race sub16, Bianca Toncelli sub12 y Luca Boni y Siri Wilson en sub10 Beach Race; Vince Duschneit en SUP Olas sub14 y Erica Revil en Sup olas Junior. Entre los adultos del club, destacan, además del título de Ruano, las victorias de Itziar Abascal en Prone Lifesaving, la de Izaskun Martín en la Copa de España de Beach Race y el Subcampeonato de España de Oscar Ruiz. Una temporada increíble fruto del trabajo y esfuerzo de un equipo que este año se consolida como el mejor de España, dejando el nombre de nuestra isla en lo más alto.
ONEXE CLUB CLOSES THE SEASON AT THE BEST OF SUP, AT NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVELS Fuerteventura has become a benchmark regarding SUP thanks to the success of the members of Onexe Club, who have managed, with their impressive victories, to bring home 6 deserved medals in the world championship of Stand Up Paddle, celebrated in El Salvador at the end of November. The athlete Esperanza Barreras, debutting as a world athlete, won two incredible golden medals (Long distance and Beach Race), becoming the first Spanish athlete to achieve this; another two golden medals went to Itziar Abascal in Technical Prone and with the relay team; Iballa Ruano got a bronze medal in the star SUP wave event; a silver one, got by Óscar Ruiz, national coach of SUP wave, as a member of the technical team. Not forgetting that Onexe Team had alredy proclaimed as a Spain champion in the national competition of clubs, for the first time, last October, their victories don’t stop here. To round off a superb season, the athletes of Onexe proved again their value in Fuerteventura SUP Challenge Waves & Race 2019, celebrated on December 6th, 7th, and 8th, in Fuerteventura. This event was organized by the very Club with the cooperation of La Oliva Town Hall, and it consisted of five high level competitions: Spain Championship of Sup Waves, Spain Cup of Beach Race and SUP Race, and the competitions of Prone Lifesaving and Longboard. In the Spain championship of Sup Waves, The Canary Islander Iballa Ruano (Onexe) achieved her eighth national title in a row. Last December 7th in Bristol(Corralejo), the Surf and Bodyboard championship took place, launched by the local club Mar Azul, in which about 70 athletes of all ages among all the categories took part.
El pasado 7 de diciembre, en Bristol (Corralejo) tuvo lugar el Campeonato de Surf y Bodyboard impulsado por el Club local Mar Azul, en el que participaron, entre todas las categorías, unos 70 deportistas de todas las edades. Una jornada, que arrancaba a las 8:00h dedicada por entero al surf y al bodyboard, marcada por unas buenísimas condiciones. Durante todo el día se sucedieron las distintas mangas de las categorías sub 12, sub 14, Sub 16, Open de surfing, Open de Longboard y Open de Bodyboard. El día 8, en el Sunset Lounge de Corralejo, se celebró la entrega de premios, en un ambiente de los más festivo, en torno a un paella para participantes, familiares y amigos, y en la que se entregaron todo tipo de premios para los primeros puestos, de las categorías juveniles, y premios, en metálico, para los adultos que se alzaron con el primer puesto de sus respectivas categorías. Uno de los impulsores de este campeonato, Francis Gutiérrez, integrante del Club Mar Azul, nos traslada la filosofía del club “crear un circuito en Fuerteventura, con 3 o 4 competiciones al año, cuya idea es apoyar, sobre todo, a la cantera local más joven, patrocinando a todos aquellos jóvenes que consigan los primeros puestos en las distintas .18
pruebas del circuito, pudiendo así ayudar a sus familias a que salgan a competir fuera de la isla, todo ello para potenciar esta gran cantera de niños y niñas que tenemos”. Francis quiere trasladar también su agradecimiento a “los sponsors y patrocinadores que hicieron posible el evento, aportando su granito de arena, para que este proyecto salga adelante”. El Club Mar Azul, integrado por surfistas locales, nace en 2002, pero tras unos años de no mucha actividad, recupera ahora fuerzas con este campeonato que pretende ser el primero de muchos. Actualmente están en proceso de captación de socios para seguir adelante con los eventos y proyectos de cara al 2020. One day that started at 8h00 totally devoted to Surf and Bodyboard, marked by outstanding conditions. During the whole day, the diverse races in under 12, under 16, Open Longboard and Open of Bodyboard categories followed. On the 8th, in Sunset Lounge of Corralejo, the award ceremony was celebrated in the most festive atmosphere, giving paella to participants, family and friends, where all kind of prizes were awarded to the first positions for juniors, and cash prizes for adults which got the first position in their respective categories. One of the promotors of this championship, Francis Gutiérrez, member of Club Mar Azul, passes us on the club philosophy: “creating a circuit in Fuerteventura with three or four events a year, whose idea is to support, mainly, the youngest local team, sponsoring all those youngsters getting the first position in the different events of the circuit, thus helping their families to go and compete away from the island, all of this to promote this great team of children we have”. Francis wants also to convey his gratefulness to the sponsors who made the event possible, doing their bit so this project succeeds”. El Club Mar Azul, made up by local surfers, was born in 2002, but after some years not enjoying much activity, recovers now its strenght with this championship that intends to be the first one of many others. At present, they’re in process of membership recruitment so they can go on arranging events and projects for the year 2020. Fuerteventura, la isla de los 6 faros Fuerteventura es una isla de paisajes especiales, que atrapan y enamoran. Playas espectaculares, volcanes suavizados por el viento, radicales acantilados esculpidos caprichosamente por un Atlántico a veces bravo y a ratos amable. Observar, precisamente, el poderío del mar de este océano atlántico que en ocasiones golpea nuestras costas, que en otras ocasiones nos regala calmadas mareas, nos recuerda constantemente la fuerza de la naturaleza que en Fuerteventura llega a su máxima expresión. El empeño del hombre por dominar este poderío del mar le llevó a inventar los faros, para guiar a los barcos en su cercanía a las costas. Estos centinelas llevan siglos proyectando sus luces de alivio. Fuerteventura, isla de costa toda ella, a veces suave, a veces brava, de geografía alargada y rodeada por el caprichoso Atlántico, cuenta con 6 faros, varios de ellos ubicados en rincones que ofrecen espectaculares paisajes. Vamos a hacer un recorrido por 4 de estos faros, una ruta diferente para descubrir la isla que nos lleva a playas idílicas y a escarpados acantilados con viento con sabor a sal. Faro del Tostón A cinco kilómetros al norte del pueblo de El Cotillo, concretamente en Punta Ballena, nos encontramos este faro que actualmente alberga el Museo de la Pesca Tradicional que muestra la costumbre y tradición pesquera de la isla. Tardó unos seis años en construirse y entró en funcionamiento en 1897. Este faro, junto con el faro de Punta Pechiguera (Lanzarote) y el faro de Punta Martiño (Isla de Lobos) marcan el estrecho de la Bocaina, que separa Fuerteventura de la isla conejera. Una curiosidad del Faro del Tostón es que en él nació el escritor Agustín Pallarés Padilla. Además de que el lugar ofrece atardeceres muy especiales, la zona es preciosa, rica en aves, y de especial encanto por el contraste entre el fuerte batir de las olas, de un lado, y las calmadas lagunas naturales que lo rodean, del otro. .20
Faro del Tostón
natural protegido, de gran interés, por la fauna fósil y por ser hogar de algunas de las aves más amenazadas de Canarias (guirre, águila pescadora). Faro de Punta de Jandía En el extremo más al sur, dentro del Parque Natural de Jandía, en la zona más deshabitada y desértica de la Isla, nos encontramos este faro, uno de los más antiguos de Canarias, que entró en funcionamiento en 1864. Guiaba a los barcos que se dirigían desde Europa a los puertos del África Occidental Española y Francesa, y a los que se acercaban a la isla por esa ruta; también servía para indicar la presencia de una peligrosa baja situada a unos 800 metros del mismo. Antiguamente un farero velaba por su buen funcionamiento llevando una vida de lo más solitaria al estar en un paraje tan desértico y despoblado; está a pocos metros del Puertito de la Cruz, pero antiguamente este pueblito estaba formado tan solo por unas pocas chozas habitadas dos meses al año. Ese paisaje desértico, el Parque Natural de Jandía, es uno de los paisajes más especiales de Fuerteventura.
Faro de La Entallada En la costa este, más al sur, nos encontramos el Faro de La Entallada, un peculiar edificio, quizá de los más singulares y bonitos faros de España, situado sobre un acantilado de unos 200 metros y que es además el punto más cercano de Fuerteventura al continente africano, que se encuentra a unos escasos 100 kilómetros de distancia. Por esta razón, cuenta con un radar de larga distancia y cámaras térmicas. Se construyó en 1954, siendo uno de los últimos faros que se edificaron en Canarias para ser habitados, por ello consta de la torre y 3 viviendas donde antiguamente vivían y trabajaban los fareros. Este faro nos ofrece, además de las espectaculares vistas al mar, unas vistas privilegiadas sobre el Monumento Natural Cuchillos de Vigán, un conjunto de montañas que pueden alcanzar los 500 metros y que son espacio
Punta de Pesebre Al sur de Fuerteventura, en el extremo oeste, también en la Península de Jandía, se encuentra Punta Pesebre. Es una torre baliza que debe su nombre a un error de transcripción de la toponimia majorera, y es que en realidad se llamaba Presebe, percebe en canario, nombre que se debía a un roque de la zona que se asemeja a un percebe. Los peninsulares que redactaron los mapas entendieron que lo correcto era Pesebre, por no conocer el significado del nombre original. Las vistas desde este extremo rincón de Fuerteventura sobre la costa oeste son espectaculares. Tres faros más iluminan la costa majorera: el faro de Morro Jable, ubicado en la Punta del Matorral, cuya mayor belleza es su entorno; el Faro de Puerto del Rosario, situado en Punta del Gavioto; y el tercero, el más especial de todos, es el precioso Faro de Martiño de la bonita Isla de Lobos del que ya hemos hablado en otras ocasiones.
Fuerteventura, the island of the 6 lighthouses Fuerteventura is an island of special landscapes that trap and make us fall in love. Spectacular beaches, volcanos smoothed by the wind, vertical cliffs, capriciously carved by an Atlantic Ocean, sometimes rough, sometimes lovely... Just by watching the power of the sea in this Atlantic Ocean that sometimes hits our coast and, in some other occasions, gives us quiet tides reminds us constantly the strength of nature, which in Fuerteventura reaches its highest extent. The effort of the man to dominate the power of the sea took him to invent lighthouses to guide the ships approaching the coast. These sentinels have been projecting their relieving light for centuries. Fuerteventura, a coastal island in whole, sometimes smooth, sometimes rough, elongated and surrounded by the capricious Atlantic, has 6 lighthouses, several of them located in corners offering spectacular landscape.
Faro de La Entallada
Let’s make a tour on four of these lighthouses, a different route to discover the island that takes us to idyllic beaches and steep cliffs with salty wind.
Faro del Tostón
Five kilometres away from the north of El Cotillo, exactly in Punta Ballena, we find this lighthouse that houses the museum of “Pesca Tradicional”, which shows the fishing habits and tradition of the island. It opened in 1897 and it took about six years to be built. This lighthouse, together with the lighthouse of Punta Pechiguera (Lanzarote) and the lighthouse of Punta Martiño (Lobos island) mark the strait of La Bocaina, separating Fuerteventura from Lanzarote. An interesting point of the lighthouse of El Tostón is that the writer Agustín Pallarés Padilla was born there. Apart from offering very special dusks, the area is lovely, rich in birds and specially charming due to the contrast between the rough pounding waves, on the one hand, and the quiet natural lagoons surrounding it, on the other hand.
Cruz, but this little village was made up of just a few huts which were inhabited two months a year. This desert landscape, El Parque Natural de Jandia, is one of the most special sceneries in Fuerteventura.
Punta de Pesebre
To the south of Fuerteventura, in the western side, also in Peníncula de Jandía, we find Punta Pesebre. It’s a marker tower which owes its name to a transcription mistake in the “majorera” toponymy, because actually its name is “Presebe”, which means barnacle in The Canary language, named after a huge rock of the area that looked like a barnacle. The people from La Península making the maps understood it should be “Pesebre” because they didn’t know the original name. The views from these extreme point of Fuerteventura on the western coast are spectacular. Three more lighthouses light up the majorera coast: Morro Jable lighthouse, located in Punta del Matorral, whose major beauty is its environment; the lighthouse of Puerto del Rosario, located in Punta del Gavioto; the third one, the most special of them all, is the wonderful Faro de Martiño, in the beautiful Lobos Island we have already talked about on other occasions.
La Entallada Lighthouse
In the eastern coast, more towards the south, we find the lighthouse of La Entallada, a peculiar building, maybe one of the most singular andt beautiful lighthouses in Spain, located on an about two-hundred-meter cliff, also the nearest point of Fuerteventura to the African continent, which is less than 100 kms far. For this reason, it has a long distance radar and thermal cameras. It was built in 1954, being one of the last lighthouses built in The Canary Islands to be inhabited. This is why it’s made up of the tower and three dwellings where lighthouse keepers used to live and work in ancient times. This lighthouse offers, apart from spectacular views to the sea, privileged views over the Natural monument “Cuchillos de Vigán”, a mountain range which is about 500-meter high and has a protected natural area of great interest due to the fossil fauna and because they’re home to some of the most threatened birds in The Canary Islands (the Egyptian vulture, an osprey...).
Punta de Jandía Lighthouse
At the most southern point, within the “Parque Natural de Jandía”, in the most uninhabited and desert area of the island, we find this lighthouse, one of the oldest ones in The Canary Islands, which started to work in 1864. It used to guide the ships sailing from Europe to the ports of the Spanish and French Occidental Africa, and also those which approached the island through this route; it also indicated the presence of dangerous shallow waters at about 800 meters away from it. In ancient times, the lighthouse keeper ensured its smooth functioning, leading a most solitary life in such a desert and uninhabited setting; it’s a few metres away from Puertitito de la

Bienvenidos a esta nueva edición, bienvenidos a este nuevo año 2020. ¿Qué les parece si este nuevo año lo empezamos con buen pie? Una vez leí que estar estancado no era real. Que estar estancado era simplemente ignorar el gran elefante que está en la sala. ¿Y por qué lo ignoramos? Porque en el momento en el que decidimos mirar, nos encontramos con la vergüenza, lo inconveniente y el dolor de la pérdida, el miedo a perder esa “falsa” seguridad. Estar estancado es resistirse al cambio y a nuestra capacidad innata de adaptación. Cuando el cambio toca a la puerta… abre y escucha, tal vez así puedas aceptar; no seas una de esas personas que viven toda una vida sin atreverse a mirar. Porque como yo siempre digo… “La fortuna favorece a los valientes”. Pregúntate sinceramente ¿cómo asimilas el cambio dentro de tu vida? ¿te resistes o te adaptas? ¿lo criticas negativa o positivamente? ¿te centras en lo que dejas atrás o en lo que está por venir? Pregúntate… ¿de qué tienes miedo? ¿qué es lo peor que te puede pasar? ¿y lo mejor? Es obvio que el cambio es inevitable y constante, yo diría que incluso es más bien como una constante vital, lo necesitamos tanto como respirar, aunque a veces nos olvidemos de ello.

Pero… ¿y entonces? Si el cambio es tan importante para nuestras vidas… ¿Por qué SIEMPRE nos resistimos? Nos resistimos debido a que nos limitamos mentalmente sobre todo justo antes de dar el paso. Nuestras limitaciones mentales vienen camufladas en forma de excusas e historias que nos contamos constantemente: no puedo porque…, no es el momento…, no está para mí…, no tengo la preparación necesaria… Empiezas por contarte y contar una serie de historias que al final se hacen realidad, es lo que en psicología se denomina como “La profecía auto-cumplida” o sea, lo cuento tantas veces, me lo creo tanto, que al final actúo y actúo de manera que... que eso que tanto predico se vuelva realidad. ¿Entiendes ahora por qué sigues en el mismo lugar? ¿quieres cambiar tu historia? En esta primera edición de 2020 te invito a que empieces este año contándonos tu nueva historia. La historia que quieres vivir, no la realidad que estás viviendo sino tu futuro brillante, tu año perfecto. Una historia positiva, enfocada a lo que verdaderamente quieres lograr y no a los motivos por los cuales no será posible, tampoco quiero que busques culpables para justificar tu cobardía y falta de decisión. Welcome to this new issue, welcome to this new year 2020. What if we get the new year off to a good start? I once read that standing still was not real. Standing still simply meant ignoring the big elephant in the room. And why do we ignore it? Because when we decide to look at it, we are faced with the shame, the difficulty and the pain of the loss, the fear of losing that “false” security. Standing still means resisting changes and our natural ability to adapt to them. When change knocks at your door… open it and listen, like this you may accept it; don’t be that kind of person who lives their whole life without daring to look. As I always say… “Fortune favours the bold”. Ask yourself sincerely: how do you assimilate a change in your life? Do you resist it or adapt to it? Do you criticize it in a negative or positive way? Do you focus on what you left behind or on what’s about to happen? Ask yourself… what do you fear? What’s the worst thing that can happen to you? And the best one? It is clear that changes are inevitable and constant. I would even say they are like a vital sign, we need them as much as breathing, even if sometimes we forget about it. Well then… If change is so important in our lives… Why do we ALWAYS resist it? We resist it because we limit ourselves mentally, especially right before taking the first step. Our mental limits hide behind excuses and stories we constantly tell ourselves: I cannot because…, it is not the right moment…, it is not for me…, I am not prepared enough… You start telling yourself and others a series of stories that end up turning into reality. In psychology, this is known as “the selffulfilling prophecy”: I talk about that so many times, I believe in it so much that at the end I act and behave so that what I keep preaching turns into reality. Do you understand now why you are still in the same place? Do you want to change your story? In this first issue of 2020, I invite you to start this year by telling us about your new story, the one you want to live: not the one you are living, but your bright future, your perfect year; a positive story focused on what you really want to achieve, not on the reasons why it is not going to happen. I don’t either want you to find excuses to justify your cowardness and your lack of decisiveness.
