MÁS DE 230 AÑOS DESPUÉS DE SER ESCRITO, EL MANUSCRITO DE TOTAL ACTUALIDAD

«A LA SALUD POR LA MIEL...» POR FIN ES PUBLICADO

En el siglo XVIII el boticario del monasterio de Silos, Fray Isidoro Saracha, alarmado por el excesivo consumo de azúcar que daban a los enfermos de un hospital de Madrid durante una de sus escasas salidas del convento, escribió un libro en el que defiende las propiedades de la miel y la idea de sustituir el consumo de azúcar por el de este producto de múltiples cualidades que nos otorga la naturaleza. Pero este libro, el primero y único de la vida del boticario, nunca se publicó y quedó en el olvido durante 230 años. Por fin, el historiador Miguel Carlos Vivancos y el periodista ambiental César Javier Palacios recuperan el manuscrito y, alentados por la historia, la defensa de las abejas y la actualidad del tema (promover una alimentación sana), deciden ponerse manos a la obra y sacar el libro adelante. Y así es como «A la salud por la miel: La Economía médico-salutífera del Padre Isidoro Saracha (1783)» por fin se publicó el pasado mes de noviembre.

Tenemos la suerte de charlar con uno de los editores de este libro, el periodista César Javier Palacios, residente en Fuerteventura desde 1997, un profesional curioso e inquieto, con una amplia y destacada experiencia basada siempre en la máxima de «conocer para proteger, proteger para conservar, conservar para disfrutar». ¿Nos podrías hacer una pequeña presentación-reseña del libro? Tú lo has resumido perfectamente. Hemos recuperado un viejo manuscrito inédito, que permanecía olvidado en el archivo del monasterio burgalés de Santo Domingo de Silos desde hace 230 años, pero cuyo mensaje tiene ahora una rabiosa actualidad: hay que consumir menos azúcar y más miel. Además de un profundo estudio histórico y paleográfico del documento original, que incluye la traducción al castellano de sus complicadas citas latinas, añadimos capítulos nuevos que completan la obra, relacionados con la historia, la biodiversidad y hasta la etnografía. ¿Cómo llega este manuscrito a tus manos y por qué decidís sacarlo adelante? Me lo encontré mientras trabajaba en mi tesis doctoral sobre Historia del Arte, y ya en ese momento pensé que

una joya como esa no podía permanecer inédita. Pero ha sido muy difícil encontrar un editor. Hemos tardado casi 30 años en lograrlo. Si Fray Isidoro Saracha levantara la cabeza… Se quedaría estupefacto. El consumo de azúcar de hace dos siglos y medio era casi anecdótico. Ahora nos lo metemos en vena con toda clase de alimentos y bebidas. Así nos va. El azúcar es el responsable directo de la pandemia de obesidad que sufre nuestra sociedad. Y a cambio de nada, pues como decía entonces Saracha, «el azúcar sólo es el triste jugo insulso de una caña. La miel en cambio es pura medicina natural». ¿Cuál es tu aportación a este libro? Porque lo que Isidoro no auguró es la dramática extinción de las abejas… Entonces era impensable prever que el progreso de la humanidad iba a poner en peligro su propio futuro. El actual aumento de la contaminación del aire, el agua y los suelos, transformación de los hábitats, uso masivo de pesticidas y herbicidas, organismos modificados genéticamente, ruido, estrés, especies invasoras, nuevas enfermedades y un largo etcétera de problemas ambientales están provocando la extinción de las abejas. Y si a ellas nuestro mundo moderno les va mal, imagínate cómo nos va a afectar a nosotros.

¿Hay esperanza para las abejas? Nos va en ello nuestro futuro, pues entre otros muchos beneficios las abejas son las responsables de la mayor parte de la polinización por insectos de nuestras cosechas. Solo si empezamos a devolver al campo y a las ciudades esa naturaleza que le hemos arrebatado en los últimos 50 años podremos lograr que las abejas vuelvan a ser numerosas y nos sigan regalando abundantemente su dulce trabajo, la exquisita y medicinal miel.

Es un amante y apasionado de la fauna y flora española, participó en la redacción del Libro Rojo de las Aves de España y en los Atlas de Aves Nidificantes de Canarias y del Estado Español. «A LA SALUD POR LA MIEL...», EXTREMELY RELEVANT TODAY, HAS ALREADY BEEN PUBLISHED In the XVIII Century, the chemist of Silos Monastery, Fray Isidoro Saracha, alarmed by the abusive intake of sugar by patients in one hospital in Madrid, which he found out in one of his scarce outings, wrote a book where he defends the properties of honey and the idea of replacing sugar consumption with this product which has so many qualities given by nature. But this book, the first and only book in the chemist’s life, was never published and has been forgotten for 230 years. At last, the historian Miguel Carlos Vivancos and the environment reporter César Javier Palacios have retrieved this manuscript and, encouraged by history, bees welfare and the topicality of this subject (promoting healthy nutrition), have decided to get down to work and publish this book. And this is how «A la Salud por la Miel: La Economía médido-salutífera del Padre Isidoro Saracha (1783)» was published last November. We have been lucky to speak to one of the editors of this book, the journalist César Javier Palacios, who has lived in Fuerteventura since 1997, a curious and restless professional with an outstanding experience based on the motto «knowing to protect, protecting to preserve, preserving to enjoy».

You could provide a general outline presenting the book... You have made a perfect summary. We have retrieved an old unpublished manuscript that has been forgotten in the register of Burgos Monastery, Santo Domingo de Silos, for 230 years but whose message is now at the latest cutting edge: we have to consume less sugar and more honey. Apart from a deep historical and palaeograhic study of the original document, which includes a translation into Spanish of some difficult Latin quotations, we have added new chapters related to history, biodiversity and even ethnography that complete this work. How did this manuscript reach your hands and why did you decide to publish it? I came across it while I was working on my doctoral thesis about History of Art and I already thought that such a jewel couldn’t remain unpublished. But it’s been very difficult to find an editor. It has taken us almost 30 years. If Fray Isidoro Saracha were to see the present-day situation... He would be flabbergasted. Two centuries and a half ago sugar consumption was almost anecdotal. Now it gets to our veins through all kinds of food and drinks. That’s why we are like this. Sugar is the direct responsible for the pandemic of obesity our society is suffering. And all that in exchange for nothing as, like Saracha used to say then, «sugar is just the sad insipid juice of a sugar cane. Honey, however, is pure natural medicine.» Which is your contribution to this book? Why wasn’t it the dramatic extinction of bees that Isidoro predicted?

Then it was inconceivable to foresee that the development of humanity would jeopardize their own future: the current increase of air, water and soil pollution, the transformation of habitats, the massive use of pesticides and weed-killers, genetically modified organisms, noise, stress, invader species, new diseases and endless environmental problems are causing bees extinction. And if bees aren’t doing well in our present world, imagine how this will affect us. Is there any hope for bees? On it rests our future, as among many other benefits bees are responsible for most of the pollination by insects in our crops. Only if we start giving back to the countryside and cities the nature we have taken from them on the last 50 years will we be able to succeed in having again lots of bees so they keep giving us loads of their sweet work, the delicious and medicinal honey.

Stand Up Paddle Onexe Team, based on Corralejo, doesn’t stop succeeding, mainly their junior team, who have just come back from the Championship of Spain with Thiago Sosas Faria as the Champion of Spain in SUP distance paddling, and sub-champion in under 10 technique. ONEXE arose in 2012 with the idea of launching an exciting project in the north of Fuerteventura to boost Stand Up Paddle. Onexe, a member of the Canarian Surf Federation (CSF), focuses their efforts on the technique and training of a team of competitors, including professional riders. Onexe has a large team, more than thirty federated players, in its different modalities: Surf & Race SUP, Surf and Bododyboard. Among their projects we find the organization of Fuerteventura SUP Challenge, which in its fourth year is consolidated as a test within the National SUP Race and Waves, getting its highest three-star award; and the Onexe Junior Championship , the 1st surf event that is organized in the north after 8 years and focused on the juniors also inside the first Insular Circuit of young Promises of Surf that is organized in Fuerteventura. ONEXE nace en 2012 con la idea de poner en marcha, en el norte de Fuerteventura, un proyecto motivador para potenciar el deporte del Stand Up Paddle. Onexe adherido a la Federación Canaria de Surf (FCS), centra sus esfuerzos en la tecnificación y entrenamiento de un equipo de competidores, entre los que se encuentran riders profesionales. Onexe, cuenta con una amplia cantera, más de una treintena de federados, en sus diferentes modalidades: SUP Surf & Race, Surf y Bododyboard. Entre sus proyectos está la organización del Fuerteventura SUP Challenge, que en su cuarto año se consolida como prueba dentro del Circuito Nacional de SUP Race y Olas, con su máximo galardón de tres estrellas. BENEFICIOS Para pronunciar la curvatura de la espalda, en esta postura haremos uso de los músculos extensores de la columna, fortaleciendo la musculatura de la espalda, sobre todo la región sacrolumbar (muy importante para la práctica del surf). Además esta postura favorece y propicia la cura de enfermedades respiratorias y previene los enfriamientos e inflamaciones en la garganta pues, en la ejecución de esta postura, se expande enormemente la caja torácica.

EJECUCIÓN Comienza tumbado en el suelo. Une las piernas y esconde los brazos debajo del cuerpo intentando acercar cuanto puedas los codos entre sí y ubicando las manos debajo de las caderas. Inspirar profundamente y arquear el tronco, elevando y abriendo el pecho y dejando caer la cabeza hacia atrás. Exhalando, baja lentamente la cabeza hasta apoyar la coronilla en el suelo. Los codos tienen un papel fundamental para liberar peso de las cervicales. Mantén esta postura durante 5 respiraciones al principio, aumentándolas hasta 10 gradualmente. En la medida que te sientas cómodo en esta postura, libera de tensión las piernas y los pies, dejando los talones juntos y abriendo las puntas de los pies hacia los lados, como la cola de un pez.

By Agustina Cadel BENEFITS: to accentuate the curvature of the back, in this asana we’ll use the extensor muscles of the spine to strengthen the back muscles, mostly those in the lumbar sacral area (very important if you practise surf). Moreover, this asana favours the healing of breathing disorders and prevents the cooling and swelling of the throat, since while practising this pose the ribcage greatly expands. EXECUTION: You start by lying on the ground. Join the legs and hide your arms under your body, trying to join your elbows as much as possible, placing your hands under your hips. Breath in deeply and bend your trunk, raising and opening your chest, and leaning back. When exhaling, lower your head slowly until the crown of your head touches the ground. The elbows play an important role to take some pressure off the neck. Remain in this asana for five breaths to begin with, gradually raising the number up to ten. As long as you are comfortable in this asana, relax your legs and feet, leaving your heels together and opening the tip of your feet sideways, in the shape of a fish tail. Contraindications: cervical arthrosis.

La excepcionalidad del yacimiento le viene dada no solo por la gran cantidad de grabados hallados, sino por su variedad y porque, al contrario de lo que sucede en la mayoría de las estaciones rupestres de Canarias que combinan diferentes motivos (letras, barcos, líneas, juegos, etc…), en Tindaya el pueblo maho solo grabó pies. Para ello se utilizaron varias técnicas. Se piqueteó la roca (foto 9); se hicieron incisiones para marcar el contorno y los dedos (foto 10); o se vació su interior (técnica de hueco – grabado; foto 11). Formalmente son muy variados: muchos tienen los dedos nítidamente marcados (foto 12); otros carecen de apéndices (foto 13); unos pocos tienen sus contornos anchos; algunos tienen dedos extremadamente largos; otros formas casi ovaladas. Pueden estar organizados individualmente, en parejas (foto 16), o en grupos de número variado. Un verdadero museo de pies que apegó a un pueblo a su tierra para siempre.

LA MONTAÑA DE LAS BRUJAS

Las huellas de pies llegaron a Fuerteventura desde el norte del África continental. En el Atlas, en el Sahara Occidental y hasta en el célebre yacimiento de Tassili Nager (Argelia), algunos pueblos antiguos grabaron o pintaron siluetas de pies en las rocas. Y hace aproximadamente dos mil años cruzaron el Atlántico y llegaron a estas islas deshabitadas. Las evidencias arqueológicas, las crónicas y la toponimia, indican que Lanzarote y Fuerteventura fueron colonizadas por un mismo pueblo al que se le conoce por el nombre de los Mahos. Y aunque posteriormente se diferenciaron en su organización social, en sus usos y costumbres, mantuvieron y mantienen paralelismos identitarios. Uno de ellos fue el grabado de pies en algunos lugares. En Lanzarote, varios son los yacimientos donde los motivos podomorfos (formas de pies) están presentes. En lugares tan significativos como Zonzamas (foto 1) o la Peña de las Palomas (Femés), las huellas de pies quedaron grabadas para siempre en sus rocas. .10

Cientos de huellas de pies han quedado grabadas en las rocas de Fuerteventura. La montaña de Tindaya es su principal referente. Se trata de un enigmático tesoro arqueológico al que, lamentablemente, no se le ha prestado la suficiente atención. Este es el primero de una serie de artículos sobre su importancia histórica, su posible interpretación y también sobre la dejadez institucional ante un legado ancestral sometido al abandono y su destrucción. Pero será Fuerteventura, especialmente en su mitad norte, donde más registros de podomorfos están documentados en Canarias. Sus emplazamientos son diversos: los hay en medio de asentamientos poblacionales como en Tisajoyre (foto 3) o Tinojay; en paredes de los barrancos como El Cavadero; en espacios abiertos hacia el mar como Los Risquetes o Las Peñitas; en lugares que por su difícil acceso se convirtieron en fortalezas defensivas como el Pico de La Muda (foto 6); o en espacios de difícil interpretación socio-geográfica como la Fuente del Sol, Campo Viejo o el Humilladero. Los grabados más meridionales encontrados en Fuerteventura se encuentran en la Península de Jandía, en el Castillejo Alto. Pero sin duda, es la montaña de Tindaya (foto 8) el más excepcional de todos los yacimientos arqueológicos con grabados podomorfos, no solo de Fuerteventura, no solo de Canarias, sino de todo el mundo. Hundreds of footprints have been engraved on the rocks of Fuerteventura. The mountain of Tindaya is its key reference. It is an enigmatic archaeological treasure which, unfortunately, has not been paid enough attention. This is the first of a series of articles on its historical importance, its possible interpretation and also on the institutional neglect of an ancestral legacy submitted to abandonment and destruction. Footprints arrived in Fuerteventura from northern continental Africa. In the Atlas, in Western Sahara and even in the famous site of Tassili Nager (Algeria) some ancient peoples recorded or painted silhouettes of feet on the rocks. And about two thousand years ago they crossed the Atlantic and came to these uninhabited islands. The archaeological evidence, the chronicles and the place names indicate that Lanzarote and Fuerteventura were colonized by a same people, known as the Mahos. And although later on they differed in their social organization, in their habits and customs, they kept and still keep identity parallels. One of them was the engraving of feet in some places. In Lanzarote there are several sites where the foot-shaped motifs are present. In places as significant as Zonzamas (photo 1) or Peña de las Palomas (Femés) the footprints were engraved forever on their rocks. But it will be Fuerteventura, especially in its northern half, where most foot-shaped engravings are documented in The Canaries. Their locations are diverse: they are in the middle of population settlements like Tisajoyre (photo 3) or Tinojay; In walls of ravines like El Cavadero; In open areas towards the sea like Los Risquetes or Las Peñitas; In places where due to their difficult access they became defensive fortresses such as Pico de La Muda (photo 6); Or in spaces of difficult socio-geographical interpretation such as Fuente del Sol, Campo Viejo or El Humilladero. The southernmost engravings found in Fuerteventura are found in Peninsula of Jandía, in Castillejo Alto. But certainly the mountain of Tindaya is the most exceptional of all the archaeological sites with foot-shaped engravings, not only of Fuerteventura or The Canaries but of the whole world. Tindaya (translated by the historian and philologist Ignacio Reyes as «One of the Pointed ones») houses approximately 300 silhouettes of feet in its stone skin. The exceptional nature of the site is given not only by the large number of engravings found but also by their variety and because, unlike what happens in most of the Canarian rock art sites that combine different motifs (letters, boats, lines, games , Etc ...) in Tindaya the maho people engraved only feet. Several techniques were used: poking the rock (photo 9); making incisions to mark the contour and fingers (photo 10); emptying its interior (hollow - engraving technique, photo 11). Regarding shape they are very varied: many have their fingers clearly marked (photo 12); Others lack them (photo 13); A few have their wide contours; Some have extremely long toes; Others have almost oval shape. They can be organized individually, in pairs (photo 16), or in more or less numerous groups. A true museum of feet that attached a people to their land forever.

Hospitran gets the honoured PSI award Hospitran GNO, Clowns of Fuerteventura Hospital, got the honoured PSI award last November 4th , by the Official School of Psychologists in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, to the services rendered by this group to diminish the stress of the patients and their families throughout their stay in hospital, helping to keep the psychological health through games, music and laughter. This organization, created in September 2015, is always training their clowns, and their activity is increasing, reason why an expansion of their services to different sociomedical centres in the island is being foreseen in short.

HOSPITRAN RECIBE EL PREMIO PSI DE HONOR La ONG Hospitran, Payasos de Hospital de Fuerteventura, recibió el pasado 4 de noviembre el premio PSI de Honor, .12

El Cabildo de Fuerteventura ha incluido en sus presupuestos 415 mil euros destinados a programas de bienestar y emergencia social, en los seis municipios de la isla. Entre los programas, destacan los enfocados a la atención a la infancia y a la familia, a los menores en situación de riesgo, las ayudas de integración social y el servicio de prevención y apoyo a la convivencia. Los programas de emergencia social están destinados a familias en situación de necesidad acusada, para sufragar gastos de alimentación, vivienda, escolarización de menores y gastos médicos. Aids for Social welfare and emergency Fuerteventura Council has included 415 thousand euros in their budget, allocated to social welfare and emergency plans in the six municipalities of the island. Among these programmes, those focused on assisting children and families, minors at risk, social inclusion aids and service of prevention supporting the peaceful coexistence stand out. Social emergency plans are addressed to families in urgent need to pay for food expensed, homes, schooling for minors and medical expenses.

4.000 EUROS PARA BECAS DE ENFERMERÍA La Consejería de Educación del Cabildo de Fuerteventura ha destinado 4000€ a cinco becas para estudiantes que cursan la carrera de Enfermería en el centro que la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria tiene en la isla de Fuerteventura.

De esta manera se pretende fomentar la formación en la isla, concediendo becas de este tipo a estudiantes residentes en Fuerteventura, teniendo en cuenta criterios como la situación familiar y el rendimiento académico. 4.000 euros for nursing scholarships The Board of Education of Fuerteventura island council has allocated 4000€ to 5 scholarships for Nursing Degree students, in the centre that the Univeristy of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has in Fuerteventura Island. That way, they aim to promote studying on this island, granting such scholarships to students living in Fuerteventura, bearing in mind criteria like the family situation and the student’s academic performance.

CONTINÚAN LOS HALLAZGOS EN LAS SALINAS DE GRAN TARAJAL Las salinas de Gran Tarajal, posiblemente las más antiguas de Fuerteventura, que podrían estar datadas de 1681 —cuando se obtiene la licencia del rey de España para construir unas salinas en la zona, que aún no se sabe con exactitud si serían estas—, son noticia debido a los nuevos hallazgos que se están realizando en sus inmediaciones. El equipo de arqueólogos que trabaja en esta zona acaba de descubrir nuevos elementos relacionados con esta actividad, como los cocederos y el canal que los conecta con el mar. Estas salinas fueron descubiertas en 2004 por el doctor en Biología Juan Miguel Torres, tras un gran temporal que dejó al descubierto parte de las instalaciones, que podrían llevar bajo tierra más de 400 años, y que servirían para arrojar algo de luz sobre la historia de los antepasados de la isla. Está previsto iniciar el estudio para la inclusión y protección de estas salinas en el Plan General de Ordenación (PGO). Findings in Las Salinas de Gran Tarajal keep appearing Las Salinas de Gran Tarajal, probably the oldest ones in Fuerteventura, which could be dated back to 1681— when they get the licence of the king of Spain to build salt mashes in the area, though it isn’t known yet wether they would be those ones— are becoming news due to new findings that are taking place in the vicinity. The archaeologists’ team working on this area has just found new elements related to this activity, like some kilns and the canals connecting them to the sea. These sea marshals were discovered in 2004 by the Biology doctor Juan Miguel Torres, shortly after a huge storm that exposed part of these facilities, which could have been under ground for over 400 years and have shed some light on the history of the island’s ancestors. It is foreseen to start research to include and protect the sea marshals in the General Programme for Town planning.

HUNGRÍA A principios de octubre, el Patronato de Turismo de Fuerteventura, representado por Moisés Jorge Naranjo, junto con el Patronato de Lanzarote, se unían para una promoción conjunta de ambos destinos en Hungría. En un recorrido en barco por el río Danubio, con la presencia de unas 150 personas, entre turoperadores, agentes de viajes y prensa húngara, se dieron a conocer las maravillas de estos dos destinos. Asimismo, se impartió un curso formativo sobre estos destinos a un grupo de ejecutivos de Neckermann / Thomas Cook Hungría con sede en Budapest. Un mes más tarde, un grupo de 20 operadores turísticos húngaros visitaron Fuerteventura con el objetivo de conocer la oferta del destino majorero. Este grupo de profesionales llegó en el vuelo inaugural de la ruta Fuerteventura-Budapest, operado por la compañía Wizz Air, vuelo que operará todos los domingos con Budapest y que surge con la ayuda del Fondo de Desarrollo de Vuelos del Gobierno de Canarias, en colaboración con el Patronato de Turismo de Fuerteventura. La delegación húngara recorrió y disfrutó de las maravillas de la isla durante una semana conociendo la oferta de Fuerteventura con el objetivo de ofrecerla posteriormente en el país. Más de una treintena de empresas y ayuntamientos turísticos de Fuerteventura participaron en un workshop con estos 20 operadores húngaros en el Palacio de Formación y Congresos de Puerto del Rosario. ABRIMOS MERCADO CON EL BÁLTICO Desde el pasado 22 de octubre, Fuerteventura cuenta con un vuelo regular con Tallin (Estonia), una conexión operada en exclusiva por Novaturas. Esta nueva ruta es fruto del intenso trabajo que el Patronato de Turismo majorero

comenzó el pasado verano, con la dirección internacional del turoperador báltico Novaturas, con sede en Lituania. Se baraja la previsión de llegada de unos 850 turistas. En octubre comenzaron también las conexiones con Fuerteventura desde la capital de Lituania (Vilnus) y desde la de Letonia (Riga), que operarán todos los sábados, hasta abril del 2017, en Airbuses con capacidad para 187 pasajeros. Es la primera vez que Fuerteventura cuenta con estos vuelos turísticos desde estas capitales del Báltico y, para reforzarlos, el Patronato de Turismo fomenta el conocimiento de la isla entre profesionales de estos países, colaborando con el turoperador ruso Tez Tour en la asistencia a viajes de familiarización con Agentes de Viajes y Prensa. Estas tres nuevas líneas son fruto del trabajo que el Patronato de Turismo comenzó hace un par de años, trabajo que desde el pasado mes de octubre comienza a dar sus frutos con la llegada de los primeros vuelos. Con la apertura de estos nuevos mercados, se minimizan riesgos al conseguir que la procedencia de turistas sea diversa, así ante posibles amenazas al sector turístico, Fuerteventura corre un menor riesgo con esta diversificación en la procedencia de turistas.
